What is the advantage of recording with the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format?

Solved!
Go to Solution.

The MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format is capable of compressing images at a higher efficiency than that of more conventional image-compressing formats, like MPEG-4 or MPEG-2. This format makes it possible to record longer lengths of high-definition video footage.

  • What is the best way to move multiple formats of songs/photos/podcasts to a new computer?

For most of my life, I have used my family's home Windows desktop to establish my iTunes account with my iPod Classic (5th gen). On this computer I have:
    iTunes store purchases
    CD imports
    Other MP3 files
    Podcasts
    Photos downloaded from online
Now I am in college in another city, and I won't be able to come home much, so I'm setting up iTunes on my laptop as my new "home base", as it were. I've already authorized it under the same account that I use on my desktop. What is the best way to move all of this stuff from my old computer to my new one? I'm thinking an external hard drive is the best decision, but I want the input of the Apple community. You guys are much more knowledgable than I am! Thanks!

    Hey Alayna,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities, and thanks for the question! I'm not really in a position to recommend a "best" option, as there are several different ways to go. You can read over your options in the following document and decide which one works best for you:

  • What are the correct iphone 5 H.264 export settings?

I have scoured the internet for help trying to find the correct way in which to make a proper H.264 mp4 video file that will play on the iPhone 5. I am using Adobe Premiere CS 6. There exist presets for the iphone 4, but not the iphone 5. I tried the iphone 4 presets but they will not play on the iphone 5.
    I tried checking Apple's iphone 5 video specs to make sure I am not over spec: https://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html, which says: Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
Here is how I have my video export settings set up in Adobe Media Exporter and the multiplexer is set to iPod:
I've tried other slight variations, but nothing will play. I am hosting these videos on a site and just trying to access them from the URL bar such as: http://harbourak.us/videos/iOS_mp4.mp4. I cannot use m4v or mov formats because of the flash script that is used on other flash supporting browsers that can convert the mp4 quickly on the fly.
If anyone has any suggestions for how to get this to work I would be greatly appreciative! Thank you!

So yeah, there is no setting I can find that allows you to properly export your video in h.264 .mp4 that will play on the iphone from Adobe Premiere CS6. What is the point? I just don't get it. It's like secretly apple has decided to not allow any mp4 to be downloaded from the web and be played on the iphone, but then lie to everyone when they say on their spec page that the iphone will play mp4s that are 640x480, 30fps, AAC 48kHz, < 2.5Mbps. Ugh, I've exported so many different versions of .mp4s and for each and everyone the iphone says "sorry, broken play button image" and no explanation. So helpful! </sarc>
Okay, you want examples that work FINE in regular PC browsers? Well, I set up a dummy page with the HTML5 embed code here:
http://housemajority.org/wp-content/themes/candidate/video-test.php. Works fine in Safari for Mac & PC.
This currently has the 640x480, 30fps, AAC 48kHz, < 2.5Mbps h.264 codec .mp4. Plays fine in Safri on the PC or Mac but not the iphone. This file completely coorelates with Apple's spec sheet so I'm at a total loss. The actual file can be found here: http://housemajority.org/vids/iOS_30fps.mp4
    Other video attempts:
    /vids/iOS_preset.mp4 - 29.97 fps before changing to 30fps
/vids/iOS_mp4.mp4 - 720x480 before changing to 640x480. makes no sense
/vids/H264_w29.mp4 - another version of the 720x480 version.
/vids/iOS_converted.mp4 - tried using one of those "convert videos to iphone version" shareware apps that also doesn't work.

  • What's the difference between these two AVI formats?

    What's the difference between:
    YCbCr 10-Bit
    and
    RGB 10-Bit

In analog terms, to explain YCbCr use the example of the COMPONENT output from your DVD player. It use 3 separate cables (Y = Luminance = Green Cable), (Y-B = Blue Color Diff = BLUE Cable) and (Y-R = Red Color Diff = RED Cable). In the analog world, RGB is actually RGBHV (5-wire) and is adaptable to 15-pin VGA with a simple passive adapter. Many people will mistakenly refer to Analog Component video as RGB, since the cables are Red, Green and Blue.
So, since all that mumbo jumbo means essentially the same, this appears to be the digital "equivalent" of what is known as Component Video in the Analog world... What I said about RGBHV does not apply to the 10-bit color, but thought I'd mention it anyway.

  • What is the best or most universal file format to save a video?

I am working on a video of a family gathering and the file is huge. What is the best file format to use? Can I email it to family without going through YouTube?

.psd is the best... supports everything you would want for print.  PDF does also, but takes a little more knowledge to use properly.
.png is recommended when using Word etc.
    EPS is obsolete.

  • Is CS5 a good edit program to edit mpeg-4 AVC/H.264 with?

I always used adobe premiere pro 2 to edit DV. But now i've bought a new HD camera so i'm searching for a good program to edit my movies with. Right now I have to convert my HD movies in elements 7 and transfer it to adobe, but the result is very poor, time consuming and frustrating.
I'm about to buy a new computer and also a new edit program. But is CS5 a good choice? Is it possible to capture or transfer my movies of mpeg4 AVC/H.264 straight into a project in CS5? is there anybody out there who already uses this kind of codec for projects in CS5?
    Monique.

Thanks a lot, I will check this section.
Can you also give me information about the quality when burning
(H.264) projects from CS5 on DVD?
Or do I have to use a blue ray recorder to avoid looking at unstable/jerky

  • What's the best choice re video file format in a camera for iDVD production

I currently am using a Sony DSC H1 digital camera which does shoot video in MPEG 1. I use MPEG Streamclip to convert those clips to MPEG 4. The results on my TV screen after processing through iMovie and iDVD are "acceptable" but I will want to upgrade to a good video camera at some point to expand my capabilities. My question is - what video file format should I look for in a camera in order to produce the easiest to work with and best quality result from my iMac?? I am using iMovie HD 5.0.2 and iDVD 5.0.1. Thanks for any suggestions.
    iMac G5 20" 1.8 GHz - 400GB HD - 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   300 GB & 160GB Ext drives, QT 7.1.3 Pro

    miniDV
that's what the iApps are meant for...
a superior pic quality can be accomplished with socalled 3ccd cameras, as from Panasonic...
HD (=HiDef) offers much more detail/quality, but is (yet) not supported natively to any disk-delivery format (Apple supports the BluRay consortium); external BluRay Burners (=$$$$) come bundled with a special HD-edition of Toast7...

  • What is the difference between Windows and Mac formating?

    Hello guys!
My question is in subject, just wondering what is real difference and what kind of restrictions in usability i could expect?
    Thanks,
    Ivan

Mac OS X uses a file system that it inherited from Mac OS called HFS Plus. HFS Plus is a metadata-rich and case preserving file system. Due to the Unix roots of Mac OS X, Unix permissions were added to HFS Plus. Later versions of HFS Plus added a journal to prevent corruption of the file system structure and introduced a number of optimizations to the allocation algorithms in an attempt to defragment files automatically without requiring an external defragmenter.
Filenames can be up to 255 characters. HFS Plus uses Unicode to store filenames. On Mac OS X, the filetype can come from the Type code stored in file's metadata or the filename.
HFS Plus has three kinds of links: Hard links, Symbolic links and Aliases. Aliases are designed to maintain a link to their original file even if they are moved or renamed.
    FAT32
In order to overcome the volume size limit of FAT16, while still allowing DOS real-mode code to handle the format without unnecessarily reducing the available conventional memory, Microsoft decided to implement a newer generation of FAT, known as FAT32, with cluster counts held in a 32-bit field, of which 28 bits are currently used.
In theory, this should support a total of approximately 268,435,438 (< 228) clusters, allowing for drive sizes in the range of 2 terabytes. However, due to limitations in Microsoft's scandisk utility, the FAT is not allowed to grow beyond 4,177,920 (< 222) clusters, placing the volume limit at 124.55 gigabytes, unless "scandisk" is not needed [3].
FAT32 was introduced with Windows 95 OSR2, although reformatting was needed to use it, and DriveSpace 3 (the version that came with Windows 95 OSR2 and Windows 98) never supported it. Windows 98 introduced a utility to convert existing hard disks from FAT16 to FAT32 without loss of data. In the NT line, support for FAT32 arrived in Windows 2000.
Windows 2000 and Windows XP can read and write to FAT32 filesystems of any size, but the format program on these platforms can only create FAT32 filesystems up to 32 GB. Thompson and Thompson (2003) write[4] that "Bizarrely, Microsoft states that this behavior is by design." Microsoft's knowledge base article 184006[3] indeed confirms the limitation and the by design statement, but gives no rationale or explanation. Peter Norton's opinion[5] is that "Microsoft has intentionally crippled the FAT32 file system."
The maximum possible size for a file on a FAT32 volume is 4 GiB minus 1 B (232-1 bytes). For most users, this has become the most nagging limit of FAT32 as of 2005, since video capture and editing applications can easily exceed this limit, as can the system swap file.

  • What is the best high res image file format to use for print

    Dear All,
I'm working on a 300 + page catalog, and I was wondering what would be the best image format to use on the catalog. I thought png was the best since it supports background transparency and all, but for some reason I'm not able to export it once I change the image to CMYK ( since I need CMYK for print ). Should I save all in eps. instead? Please help would be appreciated.

  • What's the difference between  El Gato Eye Tv 250 Plus and Canopus ADVC110

Is there any difference between these two devices? Both enable me to transfer videos/ Both enable me to hook up a television signal. So - is there any other significant difference?
    Thanks.

Canopus will convert the analog source to DV format which is natively editable by iMovie.
EyeTV 250 and EyeTV Hybrid will convert the analog source to MPEG2. To edit in iMovie you need to further convert the MPEG2 files using MPEG Streamclip (free) and the Apple QuickTIme MPEG2 Playback Component ($20). You can convert them to AIC or DV for best editing results. I deinterlace in this step, as well. If you don't plan to edit, you can sent the MPEG2 files directly to TOAST from the EyeTV software. You can also convert the MPEG2 files to h.264 format using the EyeTV software for use on AppleTV, iPhone, iPod, iTunes, etc.
Personally, I use the EyeTV Hybrid, which is all you need if you have an Intel Mac. If you have a Power PC Mac, get an EyeTV that offloads the processing such as the 250. I have to go through an extra step before editing, but I am getting excellent results, and I also get to watch and record HDTV on my Mac.
These days, I should also mention that the EyeTV solution connects via USB, while the Canopus connects via Firewire. Some recent MacBooks do not have a Firewire port, but if you have an older Macbook, or any iMac, Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, they should all have firewire.

  • What are the advantages of using an internal table with workarea

    Hi,
    can anyone tell me
What are the advantages of using an internal table with workarea
over an internal table with header line?
    thnks in adv
    regards
    nagi

    HI,
Internal tables are a standard data type object which exists only during the runtime of the program. They are used to perform table calculations on subsets of database tables and for re-organising the contents of database tables according to users need.
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/fc/eb35de358411d1829f0000e829fbfe/content.htm
<b>Difference between Work Area and Header Line</b>
While adding or retrieving records to / from internal table we have to keep the record temporarily.
The area where this record is kept is called as work area for the internal table. The area must have the same structure as that of internal table. An internal table consists of a body and an optional header line.
Header line is a implicit work area for the internal table. It depends on how the internal table is declared that the itab will have the header line or not.
    e.g.
data: begin of itab occurs 10,
    ab type c,
    cd type i,
end of itab. " this table will have the header line.
data: wa_itab like itab. " explicit work area for itab
data: itab1 like itab occurs 10. " table is without header line.
The header line is a field string with the same structure as a row of the body, but it can only hold a single row.
It is a buffer used to hold each record before it is added or each record as it is retrieved from the internal table. It is the default work area for the internal table
    1) The difference between
whih header line and with out heater line of internal table.
    ex:-
    a) Data : itab like mara occurs 0 with header line.
    b) Data: itab like mara occurs 0.
-While adding or retrieving records to / from internal table we have to keep the record temporarily.
-The area where this record is kept is called as work area for the internal table.
-The area must have the same structure as that of internal table. An internal table consists of a body and an optional header line.
-Header line is a implicit work area for the internal table. It depends on how the internal table is declared that the itab will have the header line or not.
    a) Data : itab like mara occurs 0 with header line.
    table is with header line
    b) Data: itab like mara occurs 0.
    table is without header line
2)work area / field string and internal table
which one is prefarable for good performance any why ?
-The header line is a field string with the same structure as a row of the body, but it can only hold a single row , whereas internal table can have more than one record.
In short u can define a workarea of an internal table which means that area must have the same structure as that of internal table and can have one record only.
    Example code:
data: begin of itab occurs 10,
    ab type c,
    cd type i,
end of itab. " this table will have the header line.
data: wa_itab like itab. " explicit work area for itab
data: itab1 like itab occurs 10. " table is without header line.

    Padmam.
