Basically, the Flash player is just that: you can watch videos, but you can't interact with them.
To give it its full name, Shockwave For Director is primarily used for things like games, or demos where the user can interact with the animation.
The current version of the Shockwave (For Director) player is 11.6.3.633 while the current Flash player is 11.1.102.55

I tried to update to Adobe Flash Player 11.3.300.257 using FireFox. I get the screen that says "initializing" and that seems to go okay. I am then shown the screen that asks me how I want to handle updates. I choose notify me. Then the download starts. It completes 47% and then I get a message that says Timed Out. Adobe does not seem to have any solutions. I downloaded it fine on Internet Explorer. FF is the only problem

Currently, I don't have any version of Flash installed as a plug-in on Firefox.
On Internet Explorer, I downloaded the 11.xxx - no problem.
The previous version of Flash for Firefox was 10.3.xxx - I was using that until I went to a frequently visited website and it prompted me to update to the latest version.
I began the download.
First thing I saw was the installer started "Initializing." That stopped and then I was ask to select an update method (automatic, notify me, no update). I selected Notify Me. I clicked Next and then download and install started. It stopped at 47% and gave me a Timed Out message. It then said that it was unable to install. I turned off my antivirus software etc. No luck. No message that I can find indicates that it is getting blocked.
One of the suggestions I read was that, if the 11.xxx version did not download and install, then I should uninstall the earlier versions. I did this. Still no success. The problem continues.
Bing Maps: That has been going on for about one year. I cannot get any search results if I type in a location. The map appears for a brief second and then disappears. It is like it is getting blocked but I cannot figure out how. It does not happen on IE. I was using Firefox on Bing maps fine - this was an overnight change.

But the net of this is that Adobe was not able to create a stable version of flash and no iOS device has EVER had flash. Just as importantly, Adobe had abandoned support for flash on all Mobile platforms. That said, there are apps in the App Store you can purchase, that with limited success do work. One app, iSwifter is an option. There are others as well.

Adobe was unable to provide a product that was suitable to the needs of battery powered mobile devices used for Internet browsing. Being that Flash is very insecure, I've completely removed it from my MacBook Pro. The best alternative is to uninstall Flash from your system and download Google Chrome as it has Flash build into it and you're not vulnerable unless you're browsing in Chrome. If Safari is your main browser, as mine is, then you need to open Safari Preferences, go to Advanced and click the checkbox for 'Show Develop menu in menu bar'. Once you've done this, the Develop menu bar menu shows up and you can click it and choose 'Open Page With' and choose Chrome. It is a bit cumbersome, but it removes the vulnerability when browsing in Safari as many sites are now using HTML5. Hope this help.

You haven't actually asked a question, but as stated you should only download Flash Player directy from Adobe.
Nor have you said what version of OS X and Safari you are running.

Note that version 10,1,102,64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users*. The latest version,10.3 or later, is for Intel Macs only, as Adobe no longer support the PPC platform. Feel free to try it out, but make sure you install it into its' own Program Files folderset and make sure you create a unique Profile for use only with Nightly. If the same Profile is used with both Release and pre-release versions problems sometimes arise after switching back and forth between different versions of Firefox. Basically, Nightly is like 18 weeks ''(at a minimum)'' removed from becoming a release version, but some projects stay on Nightly for a longer time as they are being developed. That happens to provide as many user / testers as possible, by not resorting to a separate development trunk version.
