Nothing specific, just speaking in general. Ex-wives, governments, bad guys...anyone really. I'm just looking to make my Mac a bit more private and secure, especially when on public networks.
Governments and ex's will/may have recourse to the legal process (or in the case of the Gov they can choose to ignore the legal system if they feel like it) when they want to see something of yours, good luck hardening your Mac against that. The best way to avoid the possibility of snooping over public networks is to avoid them but if you can't then Kappy's suggestion will help.
Strong passwords (everywhere) and don't use the same password in multiple locations.
If you really want to secure your home wireless use Mac address connection authentication, do not allow unknown Mac addresses to connect. It's much stronger than a WPA password alone.

What is the best way to run Sage on a MacBook Pro?  I am a first time Apple user.

There's a lot of Sage out thete so fill us in with information. If it runs on Windows then you'll need to create a partition on your mbp using boot camp and install Windows. So what is Sage for you?

  • What is the best mac cleaner and anti virus for mac pro.

what is the best mac cleaner and anti virus for mac pro.

OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it updated with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • What is the best external battery to use with a macbook pro retina?

Looking for the best option here. What is the best external battery to use with a macbook pro retina?

You should check your date of purchase against the manufacturer's warranty
or guaranty since some of those better brands have some recourse should
they fail within a specified time period. A good reason to save dated receipts.
Since solid-state USB drives probably don't (all) use a wear-leveling software
to equally utilize their recordable space evenly, it is possible that some of these
may exhibit a failure in some sector areas due to excessive over-writing. If the
ones you use do not have such a technology or an undercounted total capacity
with a means to automatically write in other sections, you may have to consider
manually using a disk utility to zero-overwrite and reformat them occasionally.
Even so, that may only help a marginal flash or thumb drive work a little longer.
Should a camera memory card fail you still may be able to attempt with margin of
success, to +recover image files+ from it. re: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
The standard default format they ship with works well for most file types; so if
you aren't moving OS X or Mac app specific files around on a USB flash drive,
the original format should be fine. Oh, you can use Disk Utility to attempt to do
a repair; but in some cases you may have to reformat them, etc.
    {Some of the flash drive warranties or guarantees may vary from between regions;
so if you have one with a '5 Year' guarantee in the US, other rules may apply in EU,
    or when you seek to replace an item under warranty outside of where it was bought.}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • What's the best way to transfer an old 15" MacBook Pro to a new MacBook?

    Hello.
My client will be buying a new MacBook soon (don't know which model yet) from his university. We are currently researching and planning ahead to minimize problems and prepare. I noticed there are multiple ways to transfer data from his old 15" MacBook Pro to the new one. What's the best and fastest way?
We only need to (manually?) copy data (lots of documents, photographs/photos., etc.) and not the programs (better to start clean!). Also, will old Mac Office 2008 work in the latest Mac OS X version (assuming it comes with it or maybe 10.7.x) or will he need to buy a new one? He also uses an iPhone 4S and iPod Touch (music mostly).
    Thank you in advance.

    Kappy wrote:
How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
If you only need to transfer files then connect the two via Firewire cable and use Target Disk Mode to access the old computer's hard drive from which you can select and copy the data you need.
Office 2008 will work, but it would be better to upgrade it to Office 2011. If you want a seamless changeover with respect to the iDevices, then you need to transfer the entire /Home/Library/Music/iTunes/, /Home/Library/Music/iTunes Playlists/, /Home/Library/Music/imm Media/ folders to the /Music/ folder of the new computer. Also copy over the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.itunes.plist file to the /Home/Library Preferences/ folder on the new computer.
Be sure you de-authorize the old computer: iTunes Store- About authorization and deauthorization. Be sure to do this before any of the above is done.
Firewire, we don't have any of those cables and devices unless the new MacBook comes with it? It's all USB(2). Can we use USB (yes, it is slower)?  He use it for digital cameras, Time Machine backups in Mac OS X 10.5.8, etc.
OK, I will tell my client to get a new Office 2011 then to avoid the mess. Hmm, can't we just synchronize our iDevices with iTunes to copy back to the new MacBook's new HDD?

  • What's the best way to wipe clean a 2006 macbook pro?

I have a 2006 15-inch MacBook Pro, and I'm looking to wipe it clean to speed it up and use it as a bedroom media player (front row/itunes and netflix). What's the best way to wipe it clean and start over?
Also, any suggestions on a media player to use? I hear XBMC and Plex are great, but I don't want it to power another TV, I am going to use it as the "TV" and all controlled by the (old, included, white) Apple remote.
Thanks for any and all help. I'm relatively adept with mac's so it doesnt have to be super simple, but hopefully it doesnt require coding or anything.

Back up all your files to external media. If you don't want this computer to access your iTunes material then "deauthorize" the computer in iTunes. Create a new account on your Mac with admin rights. Delete your old Mac account. Run disk utility and erase unused space.
If you have an iPhone then use the Remote app rather than the Apple remote clicker.
The new ApplyTV has some very good media center features. While using AirPlay you can also stream music thru the AppleTV.
If you're running Lion you made need to upgrade the memory to reduce page swaps.

  • What is the best display to replace a 15" matt MacBook Pro?

Hi everyone this is my first post. I have a dilemma that I need assistance with. I have plans on buying the new Mac Book Pro after two happy years with my current 2.33 GHZ *15" matt* version. However, as most of you will be aware I won't be able to buy a 15" matt version for the 2008/9 version.
I spoke to Apple sales and I was told that for the type of computing I do both the 15" matt and the 17" matt and gloss versions would not be suitable, which leaves me very confused and I really don't want to go back to a PC.
Here's some information on how I use my Mac and for what purpose - *maybe you can advise me on the best option*. I currently spend 10 or more hours each day on the Mac for work. 95% of this time is spent using Safari, Mail and iWork. The rest is spent using Dreamweaver and editing photographs. The issue is that I work from home literally with the Mac balanced on my lap whilst slumped in the couch (comfy!), this is where I'm told the *17" will be too large to use on my lap and is really meant to be used on a desk* and the *glossy screen will cause headaches* for this length of time. I rarely travel with my Mac just to the odd meeting once or twice a month.
What do you think is my best option:
    A. Macbook Pro 15" Glossy
    B. Macbook Pro 17" Glossy
    C. Macbook Pro 17" Matt
    D. Buy a PC
    Please help me decide...Paul

I'm currently slouched in a glider in front of the fire using my 17" MBP on my lap with no problems. I have the matte hi-resolution display and I see no reason why you couldn't do the same. I absolutely love the real estate of the 17".
Apple salespeople will tell you that MBP's are notebook computers rather than laptop computers every time and that they don't recommend them for laptop use. The main thing is to be sure you don't block air circulation and exhaust so that it won't overheat. Some people use a flat lapboard or lap desk. I rest mine on my thighs and knees so that the vents are free and air circulates freely in the middle.
Many photographers feel that a laptop display is not as good for editing photos as a desktop display, but I don't know to what extent that would apply to the latest screen technology. I do know that my old iBook display was awful for even the most primitive of editing. The one I have now is more than adequate for what I do. A professional might prefer a desktop display, but you can always add a separate external display if you decide you need one. If you are happy with your old MBP and it would do what you needed, I think there is no reason not to go with a new MBP.
There are huge debates over matte vs. glossy. I think I would lean towards the matte, since you work 10 hrs/day, and that is what you know you can do comfortably. I have heard a bit more about eyestrain issues with the glossy display, and that might be something to consider. It would at least be worth visiting a store where you can spend some time with the glossy and see how you feel about it. In the end, it will come down to personal preference.
    Good luck!

  • What is the best way to upgrade my Early 2009 Macbook Pro 17"?

My Macbook hasn't been working well and I'm worried about things getting worse when going to Yosemite.  My system has some hardware problems (CD drive doesn't work, needs a new battery), but I'm looking to upgrade the whole system now.  I'd like to up the RAM to 8GB, put in a new hard drive (solid state?), etc...

    1. Increase your RAM to the maximum 8 Gigs.
    2. Replace your 5400 rpm hard drive with either a SSD or, if price is an obstacle, a hybrid 7200 rpm drive.
    3. Buy a new battery, recommend the genuine Apple one.
    4. Replace the DVD drive, if you need it.

  • What is the best site to get microsoft word for macbook air?

new macbook owner I bought the pages app but I still need my microsoft word ?? I saw a few places to download but they did not mention what is compatible with the macbook.

Cheap, but with some risk: Ebay
Inexpensive, no risk: Staples, Best Buy, Office Depot or Office Max. (one of them seems to always be running a sale on Office for Mac Home and Student for $99.00.
You can always try Amazon, too.
Remember: Even if you buy the DVD at a store, you can still download afterwards from Microsoft, and then just use the Key that comes with the box purchase of Office you bought. That way, you don't have to worry about finding a means of using that DVD with yoru MBA.

  • What is the best thumb drive to use on a macbook pro ?

I just had my Lexar 64 gb. quit working & it's not that old. Any luck with other brands ? Good thing to reformat for Mac ? Which format is best ?

    {Some of the flash drive warranties or guarantees may vary from between regions;
so if you have one with a '5 Year' guarantee in the US, other rules may apply in EU,
    or when you seek to replace an item under warranty outside of where it was bought.}
    Good luck & happy computing!
