What is the best but affordable lens for portraits

What is an affordable portrait lens

Maybe a funny recommendation on the Canon forum, but I am going to say the Sigma 85mm f1.4 EX.
It bests the Canon 85mm f1.8 and rivals the Canon f1.2 L. The Siggy is not an "L" lens, however. It is rugged build but not weather resistant. The best part, it is $1000+ cheaper than the "L". So don't use it in the rain and save a buck or two.
Although not my number one choice for a crop camera, at 136mm equivalent, still workable.
There are just a few Sigma lens' that rival Canon and this is one.
I personally don't recommend the Canon 50mm f1.8 to anybody.
EOS 1Ds Mk III, EOS 1D Mk IV EF 50mm f1.2 L, EF 24-70mm f2.8 L,
EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS II, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 EX APO
Photoshop CS6, ACR 8.7, Lightroom 5.7

  • What is the best, most affordable software for a new graphic designer?

My son is an artist and interested to learn how to be a graphic designer. Looking for the best, easiest to dive in, and most affordable software for my new, shiny iMac! Thanks....

I would say Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Indesign are the industry standard in design. But not the most affordable if your are on a tight budget. Photoshop elements has most of major features as the full version of Photoshop but is much cheaper. You can also download a trail version of the Adobe products from Adobe's website for your son to try out.
Also, look in the app store on the Featured page, there is a link on the right, "Apps for Designers". There you can find several image editing and vector programs he could try. There might be a few layout programs as well.
I would say if he is serious about getting into graphic design, Adobe products are the way to go.

  • What's the best Telephoto Zoom lens for canon rebel T3??

Hi, i have a canon rebel t3 and i want a telephoto lens , but i don't know which lens to take between Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM and Canon EF-S IS 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II, I generally like to shoot street, abstract and nature photos and I'm not sure which lens is going to be more suitable to my needs...

    Vasanthkumar and Sami:
There are actually 3 lenses that are pretty similar in range and price:  the 55-250, the 70-300 and the 75-300.  Of the 3, the 75-300 is rated poorest quality.
Here is a tool that lets you compare image quality between 2 lenses.  You can even see them at different lengths and at different apertures.
    http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx
And here are reviews of all 3 lenses:
    http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-70-300mm-f-4-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx
    http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-75-300mm-f-4-5.6-III-USM-Lens-Review.aspx
    http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-55-250mm-f-4-5.6-IS-Lens-Review.aspx
Among the 3, I would choose the 70-300 IS.  It has Image Stabilization, and for the price it really has good image quality.
My 2nd choice would be the 55-250 IS.  Same reasons as above.  I actually owned this lens for a while, and it was indeed capable of taking a sharp picture.
I personally would not go with the 75-300.  No IS, for one thing.  More importantly, it is not very sharp according to reviews.  The small price savings vs. the 2 better lenses would not be worth it to me if all my photos suffered noticably.
To quote the review above on this lens, "If you care about great image quality and sharp photos, the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Lens is not for you. And Photoshop cannot enhance details that are not there."
    Good luck!

  • What is the best and affordable printer for macbook pro?

hi.... i have difficulties in printing my assignments... which i need to save my work using my thumbdrive then open it at windows to print....therefore, i want to buy a printer that can works with my macbook pro...what is your advice? i have tried to install hp printer but cant support my mac...really need your advice before i buy the new printer..

It sounds as if you need a multi-function printer, with both wireless and AirPrint capabilities. A laser printer is usually back-and-white only, although there are color laser printers. Injest are probably the most common but they can go through some ink, resulting in some hefty cash being laid out for ink (although color laser printers have, likely, the highest consumable costs).
I've had good luck, over the decades, with Canon inkjet printers. Take a look at the Canon website and look at the "3-in-1" inkjet printers that offer wireless and AirPrint capabilities, copy functions, and scanner functionality as well.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • What's the best and affordable insurance for iphone

I just purchased an iphone 4,8GB. I have 30 days to figure out if I should buy the apple care or the Asurion by verizon. Verizon makes you pay $200 up front for their insurance but I don't know if I still have a deductible. Is there any insurance out there that replaces my phone with a new phone "NOT" a refurbished one?

It sounds like you want AppleCare+ for accident protection. There is no guarantee you will get a brand spanking new iPhone, no matter who you get.
However, Asurion does offer theft protection, something Apple doesn't. That $200 can't be right unless you don't have to make monthly payments like I do. It's good peace of mind, but I'm thinking about dropping them. I don't need theft protection since I am careful with my phone.
If you are super careful with your phone, I don't recommend any type of insurance. Maybe a good case.
I would check out Squaretrade, they are excellent from what I have read

  • What is the best value iMac config for hd video editing.   I was going to go for i5 3.1 ghz with 4mb ram, but should I go further?  Thanks!

What is the best value iMac config for hd video editing.?  I was going to go for i5 3.1 ghz with 4mb ram, but should I go further?  Thanks!

You have it currently installed? Can you go to the System Profiler and click on Applications (will take a while to populate) - take a look at your FCP and check what it says on the right - Universal, Intel, or PPC? It'll look like this:
If it's Universal or Intel, it'll run in Lion. However, the installer may or may not be PPC - that you may not know until you try to install. If you have it currently installed, then you could do what I did - move over all the files manually. I have a list of files for FCE and would assume they'd be the same with FCP: copy them from the old Mac and insert them in the very same spots on the new one.
Here is the list for FCE:

(It was published for an uninstall, but worked like a charm).

  • What are the best settings to use for the newest AirPort Extreme (AC wifi) with my optimum online service provider?

I have the current generation of the AirPort Extreme and a handful of devices that utilize the new 5Ghz A/C frequency. My internet speeds were blazing fast when I had first set it up but lately it has been lagging terribly. I was told that changing my dhcp did help, which it did it seems like it might be back to its normal speeds but I just want to know what are the best settings to configure for the airport so that I can get the most out of my service on all my devices? I'm using a CAT 6 cable which does help, I have a guest wifi setup with a wifi password which I understand will slow it down a little. Can anyone just point me in the right direction or just give me a step by step guide on what settings to configure? Should I really consider turning off the guest network?

I am assuming that you are looking to configure your network to provide the highest level of bandwidth possible for your network clients. If that is the case, the following are a few things to consider:
The Internet modem should support Gigabit Ethernet. That is the Ethernet connection between the modem and your 802.11ac AirPort Extreme should be Gigabit Ethernet.
Use CAT-5e or CAT-6 Ethernet cables between all wired connections.
Only expect 802.11ac performance with 802.11ac clients in the same room as the base station.
Eliminate or significantly reduce any forms of Wi-Fi interference on both the 2.4 & 5 GHz bands.
When streaming, especially HD video on your local network, use wired connections between the host and player devices when possible.
Other than the above suggestions there are no "magic" settings that you can make on your AirPort. Note: The Guest network shares the same bandwidth as the "main" network. Unless you have a network goal to provide this type of network, it is best left disabled.

  • What are the best dimensions to allow for iPad 3 Retina for full-page landscape images?

What are the best dimensions to allow for iPad 3 Retina for full-page landscape images?
I read an article and cannot find it that said something about trying to make it 2million pixels and JPG to keep it small, but what exactly should the dimensions be that I ultimately import?  Is there some kind of a "density" setting I have to use, as well, when exporting from Photoshop, for example?

See Optimizing performance in your iBooks Author books
Density is discussed by Apple in this context as 'dpi'...
    132 - iPad 2
    264 - new iPad
At the top of this forum there are popular links listed on the right, including image sizing etc. Be sure to study those existing/previous threads on this topic.

  • I have a 2007 macbook and I am wondering what is the best external hard drive for my Mac?

What is the best external hard drive for a 2007 Macbook?

The Apple USB superdrive would be a great choice for you, ( http://store.apple.com/ca/product/MD564ZM/A/apple-usb-superdrive?fnode=5f ) I am not certain but I am pretty sure that it has the same form factor as the MacMini (Not thickness but all the other dimenetions) so it fits just under and looks like an extension of your mac.

  • What is the best word processing program for mac?

What is the best word processing program for Mac?

That's an impossible question to answer - what type of writing will you be doing?
Before we can point you in a direction you need to tell us what kind of writing you will be doing. As phrased, the question is a bit like "what's the best car?" Well few would doubt that a Ferrari is superior to a Honda minivan, but the Ferrari will not much use if you're dragging 4 kids, two dogs and the grandparents along.
    Academic?
Word is the nearest thing to a standard format in the Humanties, but in the sciences and math you'll find Tex more useful for laying out formulas. The older Pages is quite good as a substitute for Word in many cases in the Humanties, but you'll have big problems with citations in the newer version. Apps like Nisus Writer Pro and Mellel are more powerful than Pages, but each have shortcomings. Scrivener and Ulysses are excellent drafting tools but you'll need a Word Processor for final layout. There are lots and lots of lightweight editors out there - Byword, iaWriter (and Writer Pro), OmmWriter - that have little functional use in Academic settings - poor or no support for citations for instance, or poor or no interoperability with Word - but which might be excellent for other uses.
So, back to the key question: what kind of writing will you be doing?

  • What is the best word processing program for ipad2?

What is the best word processing program for ipad2?

I would recommend using Pages for what you are doing. It is the best one to use on the iPad itself, and has the ability to convert to an MS Word format. I know that it can do this through email, but I am also fairly certain you can import it in this format through iTunes, though you may need to convert it on the iPad itself.
With iOS 5 and iCloud, I recommend kicking Word to the curb altogether and going with Pages on both machines. Not only will everything be more seamless, but iCloud will update the changes you make, on either device, automatically. And Pages is only 20 bucks through the App store for the Mac (OS 10.6.7 or later needed).
