What is the best charge/discharge regime for the laptop battery?

I have a HP G71 340US laptop with 12 cell battery of 8800 mAh design capacity.
It is clear, that keeping the laptop plugged, and always having 100% charged battery is not the most healthy regime for the battery.
I have found from the web that permanently charging and discharging the battery (like charging form 9% to 100% then back to 9% and so on) is also far not the most healthy regime for the battery.
So my question is: what is the most healthy regime for battery charging/discharging, assuming that the AC power source is always available?
It seems there in so software which can support such regime automatically, as charging cannot be stopped programmable, but maybe there is a software which can report corresponding alerts, informing that it is time to start charging or to start discharging?
This question was solved.

Hi,
Probably you've got more times than me, I only look at it once in its life time. Please try this if you wish

  • What are the best settings to use for the newest AirPort Extreme (AC wifi) with my optimum online service provider?

I have the current generation of the AirPort Extreme and a handful of devices that utilize the new 5Ghz A/C frequency. My internet speeds were blazing fast when I had first set it up but lately it has been lagging terribly. I was told that changing my dhcp did help, which it did it seems like it might be back to its normal speeds but I just want to know what are the best settings to configure for the airport so that I can get the most out of my service on all my devices? I'm using a CAT 6 cable which does help, I have a guest wifi setup with a wifi password which I understand will slow it down a little. Can anyone just point me in the right direction or just give me a step by step guide on what settings to configure? Should I really consider turning off the guest network?

I am assuming that you are looking to configure your network to provide the highest level of bandwidth possible for your network clients. If that is the case, the following are a few things to consider:
The Internet modem should support Gigabit Ethernet. That is the Ethernet connection between the modem and your 802.11ac AirPort Extreme should be Gigabit Ethernet.
Use CAT-5e or CAT-6 Ethernet cables between all wired connections.
Only expect 802.11ac performance with 802.11ac clients in the same room as the base station.
Eliminate or significantly reduce any forms of Wi-Fi interference on both the 2.4 & 5 GHz bands.
When streaming, especially HD video on your local network, use wired connections between the host and player devices when possible.
Other than the above suggestions there are no "magic" settings that you can make on your AirPort. Note: The Guest network shares the same bandwidth as the "main" network. Unless you have a network goal to provide this type of network, it is best left disabled.

  • What is the best external hard drive for the MAC Book Pro with Retina?

What is the best external hard drive for the MAC Book Pro with Retina?
I was looking at WD MY PASSPORT FOR MAC and Toshiba. I want something that will work best with time capsule! Suggestions on the best external hard drive would be greatly appreciated!!!

A Time Machine backup drive should be substantially larger than the system drive.  If you have a 128 or 256 GB SSD then a 1 TB drive will suffice.  If you have a 512 GB SSD then a 2 TB drive will suffice.  As leroydouglas indicated any brand other than WD will do.
For 1 TB drives PlotinusVeritas gives some great suggestions here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5602141?tstart=0
A 2 TB drive sold by Apple:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H9378ZM/A/lacie-2tb-usb-30-porsche-design-p923 3-desktop-hard-drive
    $130
A 2 TB drive just as good for only $92.

  • What is the Best Blue Tooth headset for the i-phone 3 G? And why?

Could anyone please tell me what the best Blue Tooth headset for the I-Phone 3 G is, quality and comfort wise, I have tiny ears and don't like the headset that they give with the i-phone it hurts in my ears! If there is a headset that is super comfortable, can you please post and also tell me the pros and cons. Thanks

    just opinions now.
I drive a truck so I use a Blueparrot BT150. Crystal clear reception, and no one, and I have asked, can tell that I am on a headset. Best noise cancelling mic on the market in my opinion. BUT, it is bigger than most headsets and some people don't like that.
On the smaller side...finally found what my wife and I think is the best bang for the buck for hers. The Jabra BT 530 Blackmagic. Its small, lightweight, and from my experience talking to her, an extremely good noise cancelling mic.

What exactlyare you seeing on the iPad's screen ? If it's the iTunes icon and a cable then that means that it's gone into recovery mode - you will need to connect it to your computer's iTunes and you should be able to use that to reset it back to factory defaults and you can then restore/resync your content to it.

  • What is the best Case/Cover/Sleeve for the iPad 2!! or combination!!

Ok, I am literally lost with all the varaities out in the market....
Now putting the Smart Cover aside... what do you think guys is the best iPad 2 case, cover, sleeve or anything... something that is slim nothing bulgy!!
or any combination of the above even with the Smart Cover...
    what do you think guys
    Thank you for the advice
    S.

I use my iPad in some high risk situations (a classroom/my studio/field work) as well as just sitting on the couch or out on the patio. I like to "layer" so here's my arsenal.
For me the Smart Cover's a must. It makes the iPad much easier to hold, protects the screen and, being lazy, I love the instant off feature (and the blue color).
To make the iPad less slippery for classroom use I've added a Cover Buddy back in blue. It has a rubberized surface like the poly Smart Covers.
    http://www.switcheasy.com/products/CoverBuddy/
I always transport my iPad in its own compartment in this small neoprene messenger bag, which also holds accessories, a book or file, and my Kindle:
    http://www.builtny.com/neoprene-messenger-bag-11-13-inches-prod.html
Then, for traveling and field work, I slip the iPad with the Smart Cover and Cover Buddy still on it, into this neoprene hooded case, which has a rigid plastic lining to protect the back and sides. Then that whole thing goes into the neoprene bag again.
    http://www.builtny.com/hoodie-netbook-case-7-10-inches-prod.html
Last but not least, my best case is a two year accidental damage warranty from Square Trade. A lot of piece of mind for 70 bucks.

  • What is the best long life battrey for the iPod?

I've got a long flight to Hawaii, and I'm trying to find the best battery to boost my iPod's life. So far, I've read the $99 iCel 201, from Lithium House, provides around 50 hours of music or 10 hours of video playback on a fifth-generation iPod. BatteryGeek claims that its $150 GeekPod 100 lets your iPod play music for more than 100 hours, or play video for 12 hours, on a single charge. What are some other good ones? Some cheaper ones?

The issue you are really facing is the long distance (at the WiFi frequencies) you have to travel.  The Extreme has a radiated power of 23 dBm, nominal, which can reach 50-150 feet depending on you you are talking to...and that is measured in a closed test chamber at ideal air temperature and humidity, no obstructions.  In the real world that signal will be attenuated significantly just by the air alone, assuming completely obstacle free path, and subject to interference from other sources in the area, such as cell phones and cordless phones, and microwave ovens.
The AirPort units have enclosed antennas that cannot be connected with an external gain antenna.  So you are stuck with what is in the box.
Other products, commercial, do use external antennas so you may want to do some research in that area.
Keep in mind that the 802.11n protocol uses two frequency bands, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.  Signal attenuation increases rapidly as a function of frequency.  You will get much less distance if you use the 5 GHz band, so it would be best to restrict operation to 2.4 GHz.
Now, another aspect, at 2.4 GHz you are in the Ultra High Frequency portion of the spectrum...exposure to radio frequency energy at high power should not be considered a safe or desirable thing in the UHF range.  Most communication specialialists try to minimize exposure at these frequencies.  The reason for saying this is you will need significantly greater radiated power than the Extreme can deliver to reach 400 feet.  You might want to do some searches on health effects of the RF energy you will be transmitting.
So, bottom-line, I have difficulty encouraging using wireless tranmission at the WiFi frequencies for the distance you need.

I work in a busy university medical center as an intern (so sadly I do not have my own office) and would like to be able to use my MacBook while sitting somewhat close to other people. Best there is, is the 3M privacy screen

    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • What is the best firewire hard drive for the Mac?

I want to buy an external hard drive for my G5, between 300-500 GB. What is the best kind and what should be avoided?
    Is LaCie good?
    G5 Dual 2.3 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I would have to say these are some of the best.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/
Our Recording Studios at Ball State University use them and the old director recommended them to a friend.
Also, I would make sure it has one of these chipsets in it: Oxford 911, 911+, or the 912. I have an external hard drive that has an Oxford 922 chip in it. It's fast, but it has like a 5-10 second lag before any data is moved... it really annoys me. The Firewire 800 is amazing though.
I am pretty sure these are IDE drives in enclosures. I am unsure about the SATA side of things. Check out www.barefeats.com for speed tests.

  • What's the best external backup solution for the 2011 MacBook Air?

I'm really considering moving to a new 2011 13" MacBook Air for my primary machine and I'm curious to know what ya'll might suggest for the ideal backup solution.
Currently I use a Firewire 800 drive with my MacBook Pro consisting of a Bootable OS backup, Media volume backup, Time Machine backup + blank volume for files.
The current external options available —Thunderbolt release date anyone?—are: USB 2.0 and Time Capsule. Lately—and a first up until now—I've started thinking about potentialy moving my backup solution online. I'm curious if anyone has experience with an affordable, simple, online solution?
Also, don't suppose any kind of storage solutions could utilize the SD card slot in any way?
I look forward to hearing about your backup solutions!
    All the best,
    —Jordan

Redundancy is more important than speed when it comes to backup.
I like a have a clone of my internal drive to an external drive of the same size. If your internal drive fails you can boot from your external clone. I use SuperDuper!
If your data is important to you, you should keep a backup off-site and have more than one backup set.
Cloud storage is an option if you have fast broadband and small data volumes.
I like the simplicity of Time Machine with Time Capsule for incremental and version backups.
Rather than invest in Thunderbolt (expensive and fast), invest in redundancy (cheap, slow).
