What is the Best Configuration for using SSD & HDD Internal Drives in iMac?

Hi,
I have a Refurbished 2011 21.5" iMac. It came with a 1TB HDD. I had a 120GB SSD custom installed by Other World Computing.  I would like to reap the speed benefits of having the OS and applications reside on the SSD and having most of my heavy, frequently used data on the HDD.  I've considered simply going the route of changing the advanced settings of my user configuration so that my home directory is located on the HDD.  I've read this is an ok solution, but that there may be better ways to do this to get the best out of the available speed of the SSD.  Could anyone recommend better options?
For reference, I use apps like Photoshop Lightroom, the NIK suite of photo editing applications and Photoshop CS6 pretty heavily.  I don't do much movie editing or production...only occasional slideshows in iMovie...although I do keep a lot of old, imported, video footage of my kids on my HDD and on my backup system.
Thanks,
Ben Shugart

  • What is the best practice for using the Calendar control with the Dispatcher?

It seems as if the Dispatcher is restricting access to the Query Builder (/bin/querybuilder.json) as a best practice regarding security.  However, the Calendar relies on this endpoint to build the events for the calendar.  On Author / Publish this works fine but once we place the Dispatcher in front, the Calendar no longer works.  We've noticed the same behavior on the Geometrixx site.

Not sure what exactly you are asking but Muse handles the different orientations nicely without having to do anything.

What is the best way for using C++ in the EJB ie
    either 1. Socket programming
    2. JNI

    To what purpose?
To use C++ in the client you could generate IDL from your remote interfaces and run that through your vendor's IDL-to-C++ processor.

  • HT1229 what is the best method for using a iphoto with an external hard drive for greater capacity?

what is the best method for using a iphoto with an external hard drive for greater capacity?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • What is the best subscription for use in US and Au...

I regularly travel between US and Australia.  I have postal addresses in both locations and credit cards from both countries.  So I can purchase from either location.
I want to be able to make calls to US land lines and Mobiles whilst in either countries.  What is the best subscription for me to buy and in which country should I purchase it?
NOTE: I am not really concerned about calls to Australia.  I don't make that many and so am happy to pay as I go for the Australian calls.

Probably best option would be Unlimited US&Canada subscription, which you can get if you are located in US.
It will be displayed here: http://www.skype.com/go/subscriptions
If you are outside of US or Canada then this subscription is not offered.
It doesn't matter where you are located when placing calls, but with subscriptions it does matter where you are when purchasing.

  • What is the best method for transferring iTunes library from PC to iMac?

I have a new iMac.  I have authorized it with my iTunes account.  My current iTunes library is on a Windows Vista PC, not on the same network.  What is the best method for me to use to transfer the iTunes library from the PC to the iMac?
    iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Did I just answer this in another post for you?

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • What are the best practices for using the enhancement framework?

    Hello enhancement framework experts,
Recently, my company upgraded to SAP NW 7.1 EhP6.  This presents us with the capability to use the enhancement framework.
A couple of senior programmers were asked to deliver a guideline for use of the framework.  They published the following statement:
"SAP does not guarantee the validity of the enhancement points in future releases/versions. As a result, any implemented enhancement points may require significant work during upgrades. So, enhancement points should essentially be used as an alternative to core modifications, which is a rare scenario.".
I am looking for confirmation or contradiction to the statement  "SAP does not guarantee the validity of enhancement points in future releases/versions..." .  Is this a true statement for both implicit and explicit enhancement points?
Is the impact of activated explicit and implicit enhancements much greater to an SAP upgrade than BAdi's and user exits?
Is there any SAP published guidelines/best practices for use of the enhancement framework?
    Thank you,
    Kimberly

  • What is the best product for using itunes only?

I am considering buying a laptop / notebook / ipad or whatever for using itunes only.  The goal would be to add all cd's to the product and then increase my collection via downloads only going forward.
Can anyone recommend the best product for this please?  I have an ipod nano and I'm new to the iphone, so I'm an Apple convert, although I'd consider a non-Apple product too (sorry Apple!).
    Budget is tight!
    Thanks in advance

Without a bit more info, it's hard to answer your question.
How many CD's do you intend to keep on the PC/Mac/iPad as an iPad has a maximum storage of aprox 55Gb's for the top model, whereas even a basic PC laptop is likely to have 150Gb plus of space. Plus you are going to need a PC/Mac to copy the CD's in the first place, unless you intend to buy all your music from the iTunes store.
For me I would look at either a MacBook if you can go to the £1000 price bracket, or look at a MacMini and cheap screen then transfer the music to your iPod/iPhone or sadly from a price point of view you may have to go the Windows route as a basic laptop will start at £400

  • What is the best configuration for 2 AP's Broadcasting? same SSID/channel?

So i have 2 WRT54G version 2.0 wireless routers. They are not doing DHCP for my home network, i have another device (Sonicwall Firewall) that is taking care of that. Originally I had 1 wireless router (acting as just an access point, but I now have an additional one and want to add it to extend wireless coverage.
My question is this. How do i make it so that laptops can roam around my house and switch from AP to AP depending on which one has the best signal? Is this possible?
I figure that i would have to obviously disable DHCP on each router. But what about SSID's. Can they be the same? What channel should i use, the same for both, or different channels?
Any help would be awesome, Thank you!
    -Aaron

For a roaming network both access points must have the identical SSID and identical security settings. Regarding the channel it is difficult to say. They should be different as broadcasting on the same channel creates interference. Better whould be to use non over-lapping channels, e.g. channel 1 & 6. The problem, however, are the clients. Some clients have difficulty with roaming across channels.
I had two access points with channel 1 & 6. My laptop worked fine in all locations with interruption. However, my WiFi-IP-Phone had troubles. It seems to search the channels from 1 up, thus I was able to roam from channel 1 to 6 but never back. The phone just disconnected.
So, I would recommend to use different channels and test if your clients can roam without problems. If you'll find that one does not properly work try to put them on the same channel. Also: be patient when changing the configuration. I would even recommend to power cycle the router after each change of channel as well as the client. In the beginning I never did that and very often it did not work in the beginning but after an hour it work. I suppose this was because I was using WPA2 and some problems due to the rotation encryption keys WPA2 is using...

  • What is the best tablet for using photoshop for professional editing??

Okay, I know Apple and their ipads are popular.  But popularity is not what I'm looking for.  I'm looking for compatibility, between photoshop and the tablet itself.  I want to get over using the mouse for everything.  I'm not quite sure if apple is the best choice.  Or is it?
I'm very new to all this tablet stuff. lol  Please advise
Oh my goodness.  Is the Ipad not advanced enough for a full blown photoshop program?! I geuss I overestimated them. Goodness.  It really is just a on the go kind of thing?....  Again. I'm new to this whole tablet thing.  So if you guys know anything. Please advise lol.  I'm a complete Newbie.

Windiv, 'Tablet' - the generic term is used differently for each context. iPad is a generic tablet. While for Photoshop editing, you need a tablet such as Wacom Intuos - they're 'design tablets' in specific. They have 'full-blown' capabilities with Photoshop and majority of other Professional Graphic softwares.

  • Netgear Stora, what is the best configuration for smooth operation

I have a Netgear stora, and I know how to configure the best possible way this system for Mac NAS. It always gives me problems and the NAS system invites me to visit the Apple community.
In Windows XP system and Windows 7 works correctly.
Can you help please, I do not know if you need another type of program, or if my mac must have a particular program to work or any particular update, since this update to version 10.7.4.
    Thank you very much.

    thanks Rick
what about the differences in the two processor
    options.
is there really a noticeable difference?
    thanks
    niko
I seriously doubt that there would be. My 2.16Ghz iMac is plenty fast and I doubt that most people would be able to tell the difference between it and the 2.33. By FAR the most important upgrade is RAM. Don't get the extra RAM from Apple though -- it's too expensive and the RAM is easily upgradeable. Buy it from Crucial and install it yourself. I got 2 gigs from them for $85 plus shipping. Just remember, there are only 2 RAM slots so if you want to max it out at 3 gigs you will have to get a 2 gig stick and a 1 gig.

  • What are the best practices for using Lightroom at two locations

    Here is the problem:
Photographer works weekends and vacations at another location with a second (non-portable) computer.  Photographer wishes to keep two separate but identical copies of the entire photo library and LR catalog for safety.  At the end of a period of work at location 1, photographer wants to take all the changed files (some new, some just modified) and update the LR catalog and the photo library at location 2.  This could be done via internet but possibly it is more practical to transport the changes on a "go-between" drive.
Anybody have an opinion on the best ways to do this?  Is there a way to just export (as catalog) the changed files and folders and then import at the other location?  Manually copying the folders of photos that we think have been changed runs the risk of missing some.  Simply copying everything means carrying close to 2TB and this will also take a lot of time before each trip.  Not so practical every weekend.
    Advice and ideas appreciated.

I had just started exploring smart collections (never looked at this before today) as a way of trying to collect changed/new files and metadata when I walked back into my office from my wife's (she's the photographer- i'm just tech support) and saw your reply.  I think this is the direction we are leaning to because it should cut down on the hardware needs.  The other reply that suggested using a third drive would add another layer of protection in that one would always have a recent complete backup on hand in case of sudden hardware failure, but we should be able to keep the risk way down by using a second Drobo 2 at the second location.  Drobo has been reliable and the slowness can be overcome by saving working Photoshop files to the internal drive and only saving the final finished files back to the library on Drobo.
I am concerned about a possible performance drop if we run both the LT catalog and the file library on Drobos...currently run the catalog on the internal drive based on advice I read some time ago.
So I assume that it is possible to import the "go-between" catalog into LR on an internal drive while copying the "negative" files to the Drobo at each location.  Hopefully this process is not painfully slow...but I suppose it depends on the number of files that are being exported and imported each time.
A third method that I have been investigating and would love any comments on from someone who has tried it is syncing the two Drobos via internet possibly using Synchronize Pro-X (first sync done locally!)...this might have the benefit of daily offsite backup in between visits.  One thing that scares me is the possibility that somehow something screws up digitally and data is destroyed on both drives at the same time before one has a chance to discover a problem.  Also how would one verify that the second location Drobo has been properly synced before arriving to discover some problem prevented a successful sync?
Thank you both for replying and helping me think through this problem.

  • What is the best size for using a graphic as my homepage?

I am building my website in iWeb
My graphic designer is going to send me a graphic that I want to use as my homepage graphic - I will input some text.
He keeps asking me what size graphic I want (he charges by size)
If this means file size is my answer 72dpi/ppi = the most efficient?
What size should image be from graphic designer? in inches? in pixels? in KB and MB?
    Is GIF format is best?
I want this to be nearly the full page size. It will be in Black Red and White (the white being a bright white, the red a deep almost crimson)
I'm a novice. Need good advice for placing this graphic into iWeb as my homepage... Mahalo ~!~

According to Apple, the width of most webpages is 980 pixels. If you request that your graphic designer make a JPEG image of approximately that width, you can then use this free, online tool to reduce its file size without affecting its perceptual quality:
    http://www.jpegmini.com
If the image appears too slowly in a browser, you could reduce its file size further (with a loss of quality) via the Preview app:
Preview 5.0 Help: Reducing an image’s file size
Also see the option in iWeb's Preferences “Optimize images on import.”

    hello
I would like to know when to do I have to use
    1:
    myMethod () throws Exception
Hardly ever. If you can't work out whether this is appropriate or not, it isn't, basically
    2:
    myMethod () throws MyException
Most of the time, if you like checked exceptions. When the exception can be recovered from
    3:
    myMethod () {
    try {} catch(SQLException sqlException){}
Never ever ever. Don't just swallow exceptions
    4 :
    myMethod () throws MyException {
try{} catch (ClassNotFoundException ex) {throw new
    MyException("error" ,ex)}
Opinions vary on this. If MyException is an unchecked exception, I like this. If not, you're just replacing one with the other. What for? Others will have different opinions though, and not necessarily wrong
    Exception ,ClassNotFoundException and SQLException
    are just an example
any other exception can be in their place

Any other exceptions? Can you really treat SQLException and ClassNotFoundException the same way? One means there was a database problem, which may well be recoverable. The other? What is your app really supposed to do if it can't find a class? Rarely, this will be recoverable, perhaps. But not usually
