What is the best Hard Disk Configuration?

Hi all!
I've been reading the forum for some time, and now I decided to build my new PC for editing.
I will use it with Premiere and After Effects CS5.
The hardware I am going to buy is listed below:
- Processor Intel Core i7-2600K
- Mother Board ASUS SABERTOOTH P67 (or the ASUS P8P67 Deluxe... I didn't decide it yet)
- 2 Hard Disks WD Caviar Black 1TB SATA III (6Gb/s) 7200RPM [for working media and exports]
- 1 Hard Disk Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA II (3Gb/s) 7200RPM [for OS and Programs]
- SDRAM DDR3 Corsair 8GB (2 x 4GB) 1866MHz (PC3 15000)
- Video card ATI Radeon 5850 1024MB (later I'll buy another and CrossFire them)
- Pioneer Internal Blu-ray Disc/DVD/CD Writer BDR-206
I also have a eSata Docking Station and other slower HDDs for Backups and "Old Projects Library".
So, my question is simple: what is the best way to use my HDDs, to get the best performance on Premiere and After Effects?
A) OS, Programs, PageFile and Media Cache on the Seagate HDD + Media, Projects, Previews and Exports on the WD HDDs working on RAID0; or
B) OS, Programs and PageFile on the Seagate HDD + Media and Projects on one WD HDD + Previews, Media Cache and Exports on the second WD HDD?
Thanks a lot!
Thiago
Ps.: My next upgrade will be another 8GB for RAM and another 2 WD Caviar Black HDDs, as soon as I make some money with that machine... xD

Hey Harm, thanks for the response.
First of all, I did choose the ATI GPU because of the benchmarks I saw on internet, BUT i didn't know about the CUDA Acceleration Technology. So, I will probably buy a nVidia GTX460, since it is at the same price level, but seems to have a better performance with Premiere and AfterEffects. =)
But the question is about HDDs, so let's get to it.
I read in the forum that it doesn't make a big difference to have RAID 0 HDDs or even use the SATA III drives foe video editing, because the system doesn't even use the whole bandwith of the SATA II technology.
But, in another question, I read that it depends on the type of files you are working with. I have a Canon 550D, so it records in 330MB/min (about 45MB/s) in 1080/24p, using the h.264 codec (in *.mov files). Those are the files I will edit and I want to burn Blu-Ray disks with my movies.
That said, my doubts are:
A) Should I invest on SATA III disks for better performance? Will I take any advantage of the 6Gb/s bandwidth, or the only difference will be the 64MB cache?
B) Is it better to have a faster C: drive?
I am asking that to get a better use of my investment. If the SATA III disks won't give me any difference on performance, I could get some SATA II disks and then use that money to buy more RAM - or faster RAM, like 2000MHz.
Thanks again!!!
Thiago

I finally got the second hard disk you recommended and i can confirm that the problem of the jerkily computer was the hard disk (almost failed) and not software. Thank you very much!

  • What is the best hard drive configuration for disk/media cache?

I just installed a 480 GB PCI SSD for my boot drive. I also have a 240 GB SSD and a 1TB 7200 rpm hd. Can anyone suggest on which drives to place my source files, aep files, media and disk cache and output for the best read/write speed? Thanks for any advice. Same question for Premiere Pro too, if you know!
I'm using a Mac Pro dual proc, 12 core, 40 GB.

The best is you use ASM (maybe you do it already) and put one failure group on the first disk array and the second failure group on the second array. Then you can ASM let do the work.

  • What is the "best" way to configure iTunes on an iMac with personal user acounts so each user can access the media library but sync devices on their personal user account?

I am trying to determine the best way to set up our imac so each user account can access the same media (songs, movies etc.) through itunes and also back up and manage their personal devices under their own personal user account.  There are 4 users on our iMac.  Me, my wife, and our 2 children.  We have built an extensive library of music/media together using the same iTunes store account.  I would like to establish a seperate apple id and iTunes store account for each of us going forward but have the ability for each of us to share our purchases.  What is the best way to configure our system and devices in order to allow shared access to media and at the same time allow for individual management of devices including contacts, apps, photos, etc. Please help, I would like to do this once!
    Thank you in advance!

OK, seeing as no-one replied (presumably because a lot of this information is on the forums in bits elsewhere) here's how I've got on so far.
Applications - just went through them.  About the only one I needed was my media server app.  Just downloaded and re-installed, had a quick look back though my email to find the license key and it all went on fine.  Installation never seemed quite right on my old machine so solved that problem too.
Movies - New iMovies just copied across the clips and projects into their respective folders.  Seems to have worked but haven't checked it all that thoroughly.  Some duplicate footage here but I can trim this out at some point when I get a chance to go through here.
Documents - Just copied these across.
Photos - used an app called iPhoto Library Manager.  You can download for free but have to pay to use the part that consolidates your libraries.  Possibly if I was willing to spend a bit more time I could have got away without using this but given I didn't know the state of my different libraries and just how many duplicates I had this was too much of a convenience to ignore.  Also got my library into a state where I can now spend a few hours organising it a bit better with Faces / Events etc.
Not attempted Music or iPhone sync yet as been stuck trying to solve a problem with my power adapter.

  • What is the best way to configure password in Cisco IOS?

    I am running IOS 15.2(4) on a 1921 Router
What is the best way to configure the password for the router?  I have already tried once and managed to lock myself out of another switch.  I would like to use the most secure method which encrypts the password.
    Current Config:
    username admin privilege 15 password 0 cisco123

Cisco IOS will not let me use a type 5 password.  This is the error message I receive:
ERROR: The secret you entered is not a valid encrypted secret.
To enter an UNENCRYPTED secret, do not specify type 5 encryption.
When you properly enter an UNENCRYPTED secret, it will be encrypted.
I tried generating an MD5 hash and inputting that in and that did not work either.  When I do not specify type 5 it will default to using an encrypted type 4 password.
Also, what is the difference between these two enable secret commands?
    enable secret 5 password
username admin privilege 15 secret 5 password

  • What's the best hard drive I can put in my mac book 6,1?

What's the best hard drive I can put in my mac book 6,1? Is there a solid state hard drive available? I've been through two hard drives in the last 3 years, which i primarily blaim on how much I have to move my computer around at work while the drive is spinning.

Yes there is and SSD for your Mac.  I just ordered an SSD for a MacBook 6,1 from OWC.  http://www.macsales.com/
    Also check Crucial and Kingston.
I ordered the DIY Upgrade Bundle: Mercury Electa 3G SSD.
That MacBook is only capable of 3 GB/s so the 6G SSDs are overkill.
I recently upgraded the memory from 2 GB to 8 GB.  It cut the boot time by a factor of three.  That is only a $100 upgrade.

  • What is the best Dell PC configuration to run Master Collection CS4

    Hi
What is the best Dell Computer/PC configuration to run Adobe Master Collection CS4 smoothly. Also please mentione about the experiences with Dell(if possible with, Dell Australia) I am using a Dell Dimension 8400 bought in 2005 (2.8GHz, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, 1 TB HDD Capacity)
Ur help is much appreciated. Thx
    Pushpa

Dell does not have any sensible 'best PC configuration', not even when you go for the best they offer, which is over $ 14 K and is still lacking. But you have a power cord free. However, if you opt for redundant power supply, you need to choose a second power cable. Strange they did not include that in the option for redundant PSU's.
Dell is only good if they offer a system that meets your requirements fully. If you need anything else than their standard configuration, better go elsewhere or build it yourself. It is pretty easy to build a system for less than the price of a Dell that outperforms it by a wide margin, because their BIOS is crippled and they charge the most extravagant prices for everything not in their standard offer.
If money is no object, try to configure a dual W5590 system with at least 24 GB ECC RAM and at least an Areca raid controller and 8 disks in raid3. But with Dell, if at all possible, the price will be around $ 20 K US or more.

  • What is the best hard drive to iMac!

    Hi,
I would like to replace the hard drive on my iMac (2008 mid), because the S.M.A.R.T status: Failed!
Current hard drive: WDC WD2500AAJS-40VWA1 (Caviar Se 250GB)
Iwould like to replace a larger, faster, quieter hard drive (500Gb, 750GB, or 1TB).
What is the best choice for now?
    Many thanks,

Beginning in 2009 Apple began using hard disks with integrated fan sensors, this means  you should replace with drives that offer that. I'd recommend contacting OWC  (www.macsales.com) and asking what drives they recommend. Either that or visit a local AASP and get their recommendations.

  • What is the best hard drive cleaner for mac book pro

I am wanting to clean up my hard drive , any suggestions as to what is the best product for this . I read reviews about ccleaner , which is in the app store but there was some really scary stories ... any suggestions .Thanks

AppStore software has restrictions on what it can do.
If you don't like CCleaner for OS X downloaded from their site (not AppStore), then OnyX for OS X at MacUpdate.com has been a long time favorite to clean the caches, log files and what not for privacy and troubleshooting corrupted caches. Followed by a reboot.
Then a Disk Utility > Erase Free Space with Zero is recommended afterwards to scrub deleted files off the hard drive if that level of privacy cleaning is necessary as deleted files remain on hard drives until overwritten.
If your having performance problems with your computer then look at this for solutions
    Why is my computer slow?
If your selling the machine or have to clean it for security reasons
How do I securely delete data from the machine?

  • What is the best way to configure my iPods and user accounts?

I'm looking for a little guidance. Here is my situation:
I am running the latest version of Tiger. It is currently configured with three accounts; mine is the admin. account and each of my two children have their own accounts.
My account is the one that is used most of the time. All of our calendars in iCal are maintained here including one for each of the kids. Each of the kids has their own Contacts list in the Address Book as well. I currently have a 5G 30GB iPod Video that I sync with iTunes through this account. Shortly, I will be buying an iPod Touch. I want my 30 GB iPod to be the one that has everything on it; it will be the one we take in the car on trips for music. I want the Touch to have some, but not necessarily all, of my music and all of our calendars and contact information. I am looking to use it to replace my Palm as my PDA.
My son has a 2G Nano which currently syncs through his account.
My daughter will be getting a 3G Nano soon.
I will also be upgrading to Leopard very soon.
Ultimately, I would like each of the kids to have their own iTunes libraries for music and podcasts and to sync their iCal calendars. As I understand it, however, they cannot access their calendars from their own accounts under my current arrangement. I also understand that there are several ways to configure my Mac to work with multiple iPods.
Given all of this, what is the best thing for me to do? Should I set up all of the kids' iPods to sync through the admin. account so they can get their calendars at the same time? Or is their some way for them to have access to their calendar information from their own accounts under Tiger (or Leopard)? And as far as my two iPods (the Video and the Touch), should they sync through separate libraries, or through one using playlists. I also want to minimize duplicate data wherever possible, be it music or records in iCal and the Address Book.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice!
