What is the "best" internal hard drive compatible with macbook pro 13.3" product number: MD101LL/A that does not damage OS?

I'm looking for an upgrade in space ( 750gb - 1 TB) and performance on the hard drive, but I have read in many forums that many "compatible" hard drives may damage the OS. I plan on installing bootcampt with Windows 7 and the latest Mac OS. I'm wondering if anyone has updated their HD and if they've experienced any problems with it, or if anyone has any suggestions. You can buy just about any USB2.0 hard drive and use it with your MacBook Pro. Many older external drives come pre-partitioned and formatted FAT32 for use on Windows. Your Mac can use that file system as well, but it has limitations on file sizes. You can always re-partition your external drive and re-format it as HFS+ (MacOS Extended Journaled) then your old Mac OS version and your new one should both be able to access it just fine. One thing to keep in mind is that many older OSes don't really handle drives larger than 2TB well, so you would probably want to try to keep your external drive to something smaller than 2TB...

I was just wondering if anyone could give me their opinon as to what might be the best hard drive to update on for a Macbook Pro 13" early 2011 model. My budget is about $100, and i'm looking to increase the size of my current hard drive (which is a 320gb hard drive). I know that SSD are out of my budget range as anything even reasonably priced only gives me about 200+ gb of memory. It boasts SSD-like speeds at a fraction of the cost, and its right around my budget, but perhaps its too good to be true? Just as a side note, I'm wanting to increase the storage on my computer because i'm wanting to use bootcamp to install windows, and I want an ample amount of space to store movies, games, pictures and music. Not sure if this is even relevant, but i'm wanting to start doing a little bit of beginners programming stuff, so i want to make sure that i'll have enough empty space on my hard drive to do whatever it is i need to do. As it is, I've got about 62gb in movies, 81gb in photos, 41gb in music and 14gb in apps.....I'm really pushing the limits of my storage......*****************

The internal will operate faster but editing uses both the Final Cut Application (on the internal), and the external which is used to store and access the video that you have shot and on which is stored the Capture Caches, and which also stores and accesses the various other caches such as Video Render, Waveform etc.

I think that a second internal drive would be faster than an external Firewire drive. However, a Thunderbolt drive is said to be very fast, but I do not know whether it would be faster than a conventional internal drive. Rendering long sections of video in the Final Cut software does take a long time, especially when it is imported from another source, such as a .mov, and when something simple like a transition is inserted or even moved or altered, or a filter is applied, rendering must be carried out in that area to see the effect properly. A Time Machine backup drive should be substantially larger than the system drive. If you have a 128 or 256 GB SSD then a 1 TB drive will suffice. If you have a 512 GB SSD then a 2 TB drive will suffice. As leroydouglas indicated any brand other than WD will do.

I agree with Allan, and that link is also called OWC, their hard drives are great. Have three of their Mercury Pro Elite 2 TB quad interface drives. They will connect eSATA, Firewire 800 & 400, USB2, so broad reange of options. Drives seem to come Mac HFS formatted, but I always reformat and partition the drives. Service and quarantees are top notch.
They offer a wide range of drives/drive systems so like Allan said, spend some time seeing what the have.

It's all down to personal experience. I read up extensively recently and ended up totally confused by the conflicting reports. I actually bought a WD elements and it works fine.
Don't forget to format it Mac Extended (journaled) and make sure you have sufficient capacity for your needs ... Double the computer HD, or more.

SSD 120GB for system
WD Black 1-2TB for data (and put all your data and media files, all your home account sub-folders)
Backup. I use WD Green but use what you want. I have a small boot volume, TimeMachine, and 3rd that is a clone image of the boot drive volume.
Very fond of WD 10K VelociRaptor drives. Not much louder now than the WD Black 2TB, $100-200 for 250GB to 1TB.
You can use any size SATA 3.5" drive, most now are 1TB and up to 4TB.
You should have always bought Amazon or Newegg or outside of Apple, Apple can often charge 3x what those places charge.
