What is the best output for archiving in Quicktime?

Hi,
I'm producing webvideo. The video's are converted to quicktime and dropped on a videoserver and converted to flash.
The most important footage is archived to tape but I'd like to archive all the output. What is in your opinions the best setting for output in quicktime with less space and enough quality to use again in webvideo. Final use will be 800kb flash video.

You should archive the material in it's native format so that you have the possibility to revisit the project and make changes or generate master files in other formats.
Use the Media Manager to consolidate your project into a single enclosing folder. This can be compressed into a .zip file or disk image. It will save space if you dont include render files, even more if you make the material that came from tape, offline -although you will have to recapture in that case.

  • What's the best format for archiving for future hi res?

    Hello,
    I've got FCP 6 running on OS X 10.6.8.
If I upgrade the system I'll have to upgrade FCP and will lose a lot of my old video files in the process (at least it'll take a LOT of work to get them back to the way they were.)
So I'd like to save my videos in the best resolution for future use. At this point I've only got copies for hi res YouTube and standard res DVDs.
In the future I might want to go to Blu Ray or whatever else is current. What's the best file type to save them out as?
Also, should I do this through Compressor or straight from FCP 6?
I know hard drives fail, so what would also be the best way to store them? Thumb drives? Data DVDs?
    Thanks.

All media can fail ... my first home-made DVDs were killed just by letting them lay in the bright sunlight for 20 minutes ...
So, aside 'future-proof codecs', for long-term strorage a smart back-up-strategy is essential.
And here come hard-drives back again into the game:
to copy/clone a hard-drive, you simply drag the content from Drive#A to Drive#B - done. (no need to watch the time-bar grow...)
to copy 'disks' ... that is a more complex procedure... not to mention, a disk doesn't fit as much data as a drive, so you have to repeat that steps multiple times.
There are no numbers avail about non-mechanical storage media (sticks, SDcrads, SSDs) on the log run...I 'killed' several sticks and SDcards, just by using them.-
Magnetic media ... hmmm, older audio-tapes got rust; a German manufacturer (BASF) got 'famous' in the late 60ies for using the wrong 'glue', so the iron particles felt off from the plastics after some decades of storage..
    Finally, 'hardware' - anybody remembering SCSI? 5 1/4" floppies?? MO-drives? ................. (firewire < chuckle> )
You can actually read a 500y old Gutenberg Bible, but in 50y, most of our 'data' is gone, poof, nirvana....

  • What's the best camcorder for mac and quicktime or youtube?

    Aloha all,
Instead of iSight,,,, what is the best camcorder compatible for mac and transfering video to powerbook G4 and PPC G5 Quad and for use with youtube and or CitizenTube.... ?
I have a Canon SD 500 this should be enough because only can down load a max of 10mb to youtube. But I cannot use as a webcam to pass straight to computer which is fine,. Any Suggestions???

    You're welcome, Reid
I was also wondering about microphones.
Which microphone you use is your decision based on what you want to do and the level of quality you need. As explained in this kBase document, you have a wide range of choices of connections:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=165044
I use this Logitech USB Desktop Microphone for my iMovie voice-over, GarageBand podcasting, and other general purpose voice work. It works well for that, but it is obviously not a professional music quality mic.
if the mic ... hooks up to the digital ... or the analog audio input?
The simplest way to connect a mic to your G5 is via USB. That simplicity, adequate sound quality, and low price are the main reasons I chose my Logitech.
If you need a higher quality (and price) mic for more critical applications, this site offers more information about GarageBand, including this page about microphones.
... are there digital optical microphones for the digital in on the G5?
If there are, I would suggest you stay with analog microphones. I may be wrong, but from this Google search for digital microphones, it seems to me that digital microphones are largely subjects of engineering studies at this time. You might find a microphone pre-amp that takes analog microphone inputs but provides a digital output signal you could connect to your Mac's digital input if you really want or need to use your digital in port.

  • What's the best output for burning to HD DVD

I'm working on some projects that I would like to burn to HD DVD. The original footage is captured with a AVCHD camera at 1920x1080 (highest setting) then ingested to Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080 to retain the highest quality. Now I want to output them and burn to an HD DVD using Toast 9 to retain the highest quality and avoid re-encoding the data. What would be the best settings to use to export from FCE?
    Thanks,
    John
(BTW - Yes, I know HD DVD is a dead format but I've got a player and the ability to burn playable HD Discs so it's still a viable format for me!)

    Thanks Tom,
That was the first thing I tried and it came out Format : Apple Intermediate Codec, 1440 x 1080 (1888 x 1062) with Normal Size: 1920 x 1080 pixels (I'm reading form QuickTime Inspector here.)
So I'm confused. Which resolution is it really? If it is 1440x1080 am I losing quality in the down-rez?
Beyond that, I take what you're saying is that using this output it will only get encoded once going to the DVD. Is that correct?
    Thanks,
    John

  • What is the best setting for export movie in widescreen format?

Please tell me what is the best setting for exporting movie in Widescreen format?

Like in After effect we use "NTSC D1 Widescreen Square Pixel".,
Carefully examine the codec and pixel dimensions of that output file. That's certainly easy for an experienced VFX person like yourself.
Then carefully look over the presets in FCP to find the same attibutes. You can also use the online help system for FCP and search for "D1"
However, your question remains unanswerable because we don't know how you're getting to the monitor. What are you playing back you AE sequences on that displays them on your LCD? You're assuming we know what you're doing and, I assure you, we do not.

What is the best program for designing event flyers? I am looking for something basic and simple.

Poor old Photoshop® is forever being put down when it comes to layout work, but it is perfectly capable, and can output a high quality print PDF the printer will be perfectly happy with.  OK you don't have the text flow between columns bells and whistles of InDesign and [spit] Publisher, but if you have a $10/month Photoshop/Lightroom subscription, instead of the $50/month full subscription, don't think you can't do a perfectly good flyer or poster.

  • What's the Best App For Watching Videos on iPad Air?

Okay, so there's no Flash past, present or future for the iPad.  I read some discussions here in the archives from a year and two ago about which workaround works around best (or least badly).  Is there any update now as of December 2013 for what's the best app for viewing videos online on the iPad (Air)?  Thanks.

I downloaded the new (2013) version of Photon and it's been playing, appropriately enough, episodes of Star Trek: TAS that otherwise require Flash.   The one thing I have to remember is to click the goofy lighting bolt icon toward the top right-hand corner of the Photon screen when I return to warch an episode if I stopped in the middle.  Basically it will turn off the "Flash" emulation when the screen goes dark with inactivity, and then when you reopen Photon it crashes and you have to re-reopen Photon, click on the link to return to the website, and then click the lightning bolt icon.  I don't know why the producers made it that way, as it's pretty inconvenient, but maybe they wanted to make a browser more than a Flash emulator.  I haven't tried other Flash videos yet, but so far, so good.  :-)

  • What is the best way to archive old footage (DVD, VHS, Super 8 etc.)

    Hello,
I am starting a huge archiving projet of possibley 100-200 hours of footage from all kinds of sources (VHS tapes, Mini DV, Super 8 film).
What is the best way to archive this footage at the highest possible resolution?
What sort of file should be saved?
Im a complete starter at this.
    Thank you!

One strategy is to purchase a Canopus ADVC300 analog/dv converter. It has a TBC incorporated.
You connect your original source material (for example - VHS deck) to the Canopus via analog cables then from the Canopus via firewire to your computer. This will turn everything into DV format.
Play the tape through the canopus and record to your hard drive.
Take good notes for each tape. Create a logging sheet and make notes as the system captures.
Once you have the tapes in the computer, break them into 1 hr or less segments by some reasonable system - chronologically, by personalities, locations or whatever makes sense to you.
Then write out each 1 hour segment back to a DV recorder. Give each tape a unique reel number - and make the reel number part of the file name on the computer.
When you are done in a year or two ( lol ) you should have two matching sets of material - one on the hard drives and one on tape - with names that make it easy to cross reference and a binder full of logging information. If you want to be fully digital, look into a nifty application like CatDV. It will help organize a mass of video info like this.
DV runs at ~13-14GB/ hr. Plan you storage accordingly.
Purchase professional quality DV tapes - not drugstore junk.
    Good luck.

  • What are the best practies for naming symbols (spaces OK,etc.)?

What are the best practices for symbol naming for ease, flexibility, & to avoid "gatchas" down the road?
Does it make any difference if one includes spaces in the names of symbols?  Are there any widely followed conventions for naming them like using camelCase or underscores?
    Thanks!

    Hi Gina D 3333,
Best-practice file-naming conventions for PDF files are the same as for any other file. I found this article on Apple's website that contains some useful pointers to consider when you're naming files that will be used on multiple platforms: OS X: Cross-platform filename best practices and conventions
    I hope this helps!

  • What is the best practice for changing view states?

I have a component with two Pie Charts that display
percentages at two specific dates (think start and end values).
But, I have three views: Start Value only, End Value only, or show
Both. I am using a ToggleButtonBar to control the display. What is
the best practice for changing this kind of view state? Right now
(since this code was inherited), the view states are changed in an
ActionScript function which sets the visible and includeInLayout
properties on each Pie Chart based on the selectedIndex of the
ToggleButtonBar, but, this just doesn't seem like the best way to
do this - not very dynamic. I'd like to be able to change the state
based on the name of the selectedItem, in case the order of the
ToggleButtons changes, and since I am storing the name of the
    selectedItem for future reference.
Would using States be better? If so, what would be the best
    way to implement this?
    Thanks.

I would stick with non-states, as I have always heard that
states are more for smaller components that need to change under
certain conditions, like a login screen that changes if the user
    needs to register.
That said, if the UI of what you are dealing with is not
overly complex, and if it will not become overly complex, maybe
states is the way to go.
Looking at your code, I don't think you'll save much in terms
    of lines of code.

  • What's the best photograph for a no background image?

I am about to photograph some products and would like to make a set up where I can photograph each of the products in the same setting/lighting. Then, when I go to open/edit them in PhotoshopCS4, I can take out the background and have just the image. Then, I can place that image ontop of any background I want. There is one bad thing. Some of these have a clear top where you can see thru them. Does or will that make a difference?
I want to set it up like they do for the weather on television, have a blue background and erase all of the blue showing. Then the only thing showing in the end is the digital background that was added in by computer and the weatherman(unless he's wearing a blue tie, in which case you can see the info through him). But my question still stands, what is the best setting for this and/or background color, how should the photographs be taken and then opened and edited(removing the background) using PhotoshopCS4?
We have a lighting set up, a 30" x 30" x 30" light tent setup, 3 lights with Pro Light Reflectors(one on the left, one on the right and one on top), 1 white and 1 black background and a box to place the images on. I'm using a Nikon D100.
    Attached in a photo example.
This was taken with the black background and you can see the black through the bottle. I erased all of the surrounding black, but the dark shades still show on the sides.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Sean

The whole point is that these photographs will be used for the book, manuals, magazines, ads... The backgrounds will not always be the same.  That's my main problem. I am trying to figure out a way for the glass of the bottles to be "glass" images or "see through" so that when the photograph is placed on a background of, let's say, flowers, the flowers would show through. The edges of the glass are still solid and the flowers would not show thru them, but...
Is this type of thing possible for printing quality photographs?
Note - In the attched photo, it can be seen that the black background can be seen the plastic cap.

1.Using separate schema s for various type users(We can store only relevant data with a particular schema.     Then No. of records per table can be reduced by replicating tables but we have to maintain all data with a another schema     Then we need update two schema s for a given session.Because we maintain separate scheama for a one user and another schema for all data and then there may be Updating problems)
