What is the best process to backup and rebuild an iMac?
I have an old iMac running Snow Leopard. It's starting to show signs of age in how it's been running, so I thought I'd start over with it. I've rebuilt Windows machines but never a Mac. I have tons of stuff I don't want to lose. I have Time Machine but I've never used it to retrieve anything I've backed up. Will it work like that once I strip the machine and reload the OS-- retrieving individual files, etc? Or does it strictly backup the computer as a total image that you reload? Or should I just backup all my files the old fashioned way, on an external drive? Any step-by-step guides out there?
OR
How simple is it to replace the existing HD to start over? Is it cost effective? I haven't done any research, yet. Just seeing if anyone has wisdom to offer.

Backup files and BRM of dfs01 and dfs2 for minimaze traffic.
If dfs01 and dfs02 have good channel width that use DPM to only protect a single “copy” of the data located on a server-specific local path.

What is the best process for adding a long text scroll into a video?
I have an hour video and need to insert a narrated poem that will either scroll or have lines fade in / out. What is the best process to create that poem? Do I use Motion? Live Type? compose it directly in FCP? I'll have either a still image or a looping video for the background. Once I know the best starting point, then I'll refine my questions. The poem is about 4 minutes narrated. Appreciate any help to get me started.
In the effects window try "Scrolling Text". Set it to be the length you need it (duration) and paste in your text and render and see how you like it. I think scrolling text has a nice little fade at the top and bottom too.
Or, you can make the text an image in something like Photoshop and keyframe it to slowly move in FCP for the duration of the video. -

I wish to backup my iTunes on an external HD. I'm aware that I should move the iTunes folder in its entirety over to the external HD so everything remains the same.
However, when I have new iTunes added in my library in my MacBook, what is the best way to add and backup those new iTunes in the external drive? Can I just do a drag and drop for those new iTunes files into the iTunes folder in the external HD?
Thanks in advance for your help!Yes, if you don't want to clone the whole drive, you can pick and choose the files. If there is stuff already on the external drive, just be sure to deselect the button that tells CCC to remove any files not on the source drive. In other words, you want CCC to simply add more files to the external or update the ones that have changed. You do not want it to remove any.
CCC is a free download by the way. SuperDuper is a free download but the free version does not allow incremental backups, only a full complete backup which means losing what is already on the backup drive.

I do exactly as Thomas Reed does. Always have from day one. Going on 15 months now and I get at least 10 hours of use out the battery every day. No matter how much juice is left on the device when I go to bed - I put the iPad on the charger - doesn't matter what the battery gauge says - I plug it in and let it charge all night.

Either userObjet[][] if you know how much data you have, and the data size is fixed, or use a list of lists. E.g. A Vector of Vectors (some will probably say that you should use an ArrayList instead, and that could be the case, but it sounds like you would want to display the data later on, and a DefaultTableModel (for JTables) uses a Vector as data holder).

Once you scan them and have them on your desktop. You should use Automator and assign the common IPTC tags to the images, so that when you do import them into iPhoto, they get recorded.

If the entire library is on the external drive then simply copy the iTunes folder into <User's Music> on the new computer, then install iTunes. If you've already installed iTunes you will want to remove the empty iTunes folder in <User's Music> first.
