What is the best replacement for Photoshop from the App Store?

One of the things I miss is my ability to use Photoshop with earlier OS versions.  I do keep a MacBook Pro to the side of my desktop iMac so I can still use Photoshop.
My questions is....can anyone suggest a suitable replacement for Photoshop that I can use with the latest versions of OS?  I have already tried Pixelator but it does not have some of the features that I really beed (like drop shadow).
Thanks in advance.

  • What is the best replacement for iWeb?

I have been using iWeb for a very long time. I need to move on to something that is being updated. What is the best replacement for iWeb? I see Wordpress needs special software to work on a Mac.
    Thanks!
    Pat

I have used HostExcellence in the past and they support all the CMS's including WordPress, so you should have no problems there.
The top CMS's that most have heard about and use are Drupal, Joomla and WordPress.
There is probably no best one, but you need to look at them all and use the one that best fits your needs.
I have used all of them in the past, but most recently Joomla and Drupal.  Drupal has a reputation for being quite hard and Drupal 6 was, but with the advent of Drupal 7, things got a lot easier.  There are a lot more themes that you can use and if you want increased functionality in Drupal, then you can download Modules and install them.  You can have a membership site if you want it and this is easy to do - people can sign up for an account and you can restrict their access to certain parts of the site and then limit what they can do.  You can allow people to complete forms on the site itself and the results to be sent to you.  There is a Blog module that you can enable and that comes in Drupal Core with no need to download an extra module.
Joomla is good also and you can have a Blog with it too and there are lots of themes to choose from, but sometimes you have to pay for extras with Joomla - you can download Extensions and Plugins, but they may not always be free.
WordPress was always just thought of as a blogging platform, but it has evolved in to much more than that and you can now create stunning looking websites with blogs - there are a good range of free templates to choose from and if you want your blog on the front page of your site you can have this, or you can change it to another part of your site if you want a static front page.  To extend functionality you can download plugins from inside WordPress itself, most of which are free.  This might be the easiest one for you to use if you just want a website with a built in blog that is relatively easy.
Check out the others though at Drupal.org, Joomla.org and then WordPress.org.

  • What's the best Mac for Photoshop?

I daily work on layered photoshop files, up to 10 (ten) GB. I currently have a G5 with 8 gb of ram. I finally can afford to upgrade to a faster computer and need to figure out if the 8core 2.93GHZ at $5,899 is the best buy for me. The 8 core 2.26GHZ is $3299. For an additional $2500 I would need to know that I will get at least 15% increase in speed. I remember back in the day when I picked out the fastest g5, when I later compared it to a slower G5, the difference in speed was barely noticeable, and when I upgraded to 8GB of RAM I discovered that photoshop could only take advantage of 2 GB.
Does photoshop benefit from 8core vs 4 core?
Will an 8 core 2.26ghz be faster than a 4 core 2.93GHZ when working in photoshop?
Is there something new coming out, so I would benefit from waiting with my purchase?

I work on big files, tho not that big.
For many of the time-critical things I do in Photoshop seem to be single-processor, so even tho I have an 8-core machine, often only one is being used. This includes things like flatening and saving. So I am not sure that (unless you have other programs running) you would ever see an advantage to more than 4 cores.
What I do notice when I work with big files, is that I keep a copy of Activity Monitor open, and whenever the green sector in memory goes to zero, my computer becomes unusably slow, and I usually reboot. I don't understand memory managment on the Mac, but whatever "inactive" means, it really means "swap yourself to death". So I have 14GB of RAM on my computer, and I usually don't run out even when dealing with big files. But I know that 8GB would not have been enough. Photoshop may not use more than 2GB, but it and the OS can cache materials and when those caches get too big, my computer comes to a halt. With your files, you may find 32GB to be useful.
What I have done is to burn a CD or DVD with one big psd/psb file and walk down to my local Apple Store. The machines there don't have much RAM, but you can get some feeling for 4 cores vs. 8 cores. Reboot them before you do anything.
One thing I would strongly recommend you do not try is what I did with my old G5--install a RAID. It only increased opportunities for losing files, and while it certainly sped up many file operations, I don't think any Photoshop operations were affected at all.

What music app is the best replacement for iTunes 11 on OS X?  Must be able to open multiple playlists.

First step before doing anything with OD is to make certain that local DNS services are correct.  To verify that, launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities on the test server, and issue the following harmless, diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
You'll need to enter your administrative password for the sudo to be accepted.
If the output from that command reports no changes are required, then an export from the original OD and an import into the test system would be typical for testing, if you trust what's in the original OD.

  • What is the best laptop for Photoshop Elements 10 ?

I have HP Pavilion g6 Notebook,i5-245M 2.5GHZ, 4 GB mwmory, 64-bit Operating system window 7, Radeon Graphics, Eidtior not working , I get error message ( Unable to continue because of hardware or system error,Sorry, but this error in unercoverable).
So I want to give this one to my son, and I want to bay new One for me,
but i do not want to have same Error with my new Laptop,
So any one know what is the best Laptop for PhotoShop Elements 10 ?
    Thanks for Helping me .

I would suggest a machine with a multi-core processor and plenty of storage as photo files take up quite a lot of room over time. Many laptops have a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 and whilst elements will run OK some menu functionality will be missing if the display is not at least 800 pixels in height. A resolution of 1600 x 900 would be much better.
Independent advice is best, such as Which, UK. You can get a trial membership for as little as £1 to access their recommendations.

  • What is the best resolution for pics in the drop zones of idvd?

What is the best resolution for pics in the drop zones of iDVD?
Also: iDVD always seems to align a pic to the left, can I change this anywhere?
    thanks

    Hello, Hans.
Re: drop zone pic resolution - I generally don't go below 1000 pixels wide (iDVD will resize these images to a slightly smaller format, but I've controlled the largest part of the downsizing in Photoshop Elements).
The alignment in iDVD is goofy.  The best I've achieved is trial and error -- adding blank background or cropping my image in the downsizing process (see above) to position my image.

  • What is the best replacement for iDVD

I just bought a new iMac and found out that iDVD has vanished. What's the best approch for making slide shows from iPhoto and burning to a  DVD?

Sorry, but I haven't found a way to burn a movie directly from iMovie since iMovie HD (6) (note: burn project to disk):
Whereas, there are no options to burn in the current iMovie version:
You can share it to online sites and you can export it, but you can't burn it.

  • The BEST solution for gmail on the iPhone

OK, so after much poking around, I finally figured out the best solution for using gmail on the iPhone: IMAP support.
While I think Google is still rolling this out to all users, once you get it, USE IT! It basically keeps your mail app synced with gmail, and even supports the use of folders/labels.
To see if your gmail account is ready for IMAP, go to the settings option in gmail and see if one of the tabs says "Forwarding and POP/IMAP." If you don't have IMAP available on your account yet, it won't say IMAP.
Here's some links to get you started:
setting up IMAP for gmail on your iPhone:
    https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77702
how actions in your mail app sync to gmail:
    https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77657
I hope this helps out everyone as much as it's helped me. I was a little frustrated before using POP, but gotta love IMAP! I'm not too sure the impact that this has on your battery life, but so far it's working well for me. Enjoy!

Gmail and IMAP have totally change my tune about the iPhone's email abilities. I was getting frustrated with the inability to reliably get mail (Message has not been downloaded...), sync (have to delete mail from both iPhone and desktop Mac), etc., but now I have all my POP email accounts automatically forward to my Gmail account, and I only check Gmail with the iPhone and MacPro. So far, it's a whole new iPhone experience! No more errors - ALL mail comes through perfectly - and no need to manually sync!
Note that, when setting up the Gmail/IMAP accounts, do NOT simply update your old POP Gmail settings on your Mac or iPhone! Start with a FRESH new account. I couldn't get either the iPhone or Mac to work until I started with a fresh account.
Also, I was unable to send mail from the iPhone using the smtp.gmail address, so I had changed the outgoing mail setting to use my regular ISP's smtp address. But, at some point (a few minutes later or a few hours, I don't know) when I checked the Gmail settings on the iPhone, it had magically changed itself to smtp.gmail, with the port number, and it has been working perfectly ever since! Maybe IMAP can atomatically correct this info? Not sure.
One more thing. Once you have Gmail IMAP working, then you MUST go here:
    http://5thirtyone.com/archives/862
Follow these directions exactly. This is a necessary set of steps in order to make your iPhone and Mac sync correctly, so that trashed mail on the iPhone will go in the trash on your desktop Mac, etc. It's pretty freaky to check email on the iPhone, and then go to your Mac Mail a few minutes later, and see all the newly trashed (or saved/read) emails perfectly synched up!
A final note. Once this is all working and synching, remember that if you delete an email on your iPhone, it gets deleted on the desktop Mac Mail as well (and vice-versa)... which is exactly what you want to happen, but I find that I have to remember to keep the mail that I want to save on the iPhone's inbox until I get back to my desktop Mac. Otherwise, I have to manually remove it from the trash to save it!

  • What is the best tablet for photoshop editing?

For Christmas I want to get my dad a tablet (I guess this is what they are called? With the pen?) for editing his photos on the computer. He loves editing his pictures on Adobe Lightroom, but always complains about the mouse giving him trouble. So without asking my Dad questions and giving the gift idea away, it would be awesome if you could give me some input, advice, and suggestions. Thank you. I'm so excited about surprising my Daddy this Christmas!

I purchased the 9.8 x 6.9 inch tablet. I use the touch function for browsing
the web and most of the time for general work instead of the mouse. I use
the pen when working with Lightroom or Photoshop Elements  and plugins such
as Photomatix or Perfect Layers; any time when requiring delicate input.

I attempt to connect to my mac mini running osx 10.7 from ubuntu linux using the default vncviewer application and the tightvnc client and I get to the login display but am unable to click on any of the users nor log in.  I was successful from my windows7 laptop, but not from my windows xp HTPC--ultravnc gets to the login prompt, showed me the password field, but didn't allow me to change focus to that field, however, this isn't reproducable since I get a different behavior each time I try to remote in.

  • The best monitor for Photoshop CS5

I am looking to purchase a good monitor and I have  budget constraint.  I don't understand the difference between contrast ratio and dynamic contrast ratio. I know somw will ask what is my budget is and it is about 275.00- 325.00.  Thanks

    Noel Carboni wrote:
I'd like to hear your opinion of your new monitor when you get it.
Well, it was a bit of a disappointment. There is a slight color gradient across the screen, from cool (cyan) at one end to warm (red) at the other. Nothing dramatic, but being able to trust even the most delicate adjustments was what I wanted an IPS panel for in the first place. Otherwise, the Dell's performance seems very good, but the color gradient issue killed my initial enthusiasm, and I'll try to get it replaced.
My trusted Eizo with its P-VA panel has its own weaknesses - as Eizos go it's low-end - but it is perfectly even across the entire screen, all the way out to the corners. The comparison is not unjust since they cost about the same.
Anyway, the main reason for updating this thread was that I discovered that there are some quite inexpensive IPS monitors out there. In particular, there seems to be a "new generation" of standard gamut models, one of which is the new Dell U2412, that should be within reach for anyone. Another is the HP ZR24W, and NEC has a 23" called EA232WM. In general, reducing screen size to 22" or 23" will save a lot of money.
Another thing I've discovered is that brand name isn't all that important. The panels themselves come from only a small handful of manufacturers, and IPS panels all come from LG electronics. The Dell U2410 uses the exact same panel as the HP LP2475W, and probably many others.

  • The best way for moving from Java To JSP....

Enterprise Applications != JSP. JSP is just a
front-end. For enterprise apps you'd probably rather
need EJBs...Argh... not true. I see what you are getting at, as JSP is merely presentation layer stuff; however, EJBs are certainly not ever required per se, altho they may offer some services that may be useful. I suggest OP takes a look at Struts in order to separate the webapp in an MVC style so that the decision for what to use at the back is decoupled from everything else. If it is a simple webapp, and for a University then I don't think a complex back-end will be required. In any case webapps are not enterprise systems, but they may act as views on them in some cases.

  • [AMD] Whats the best BIOS for overclocking on the K8N Neo-2 Platinum

any one know which one is best.
    thanks

I have no idea what biosversion that is the best in general for OC the K8N Neo2 P.
I use 1.5 and it´s the only version I´ve used.
I believe not many people have tested OC potential for all 6 versions 1.0 - 1.5.
( even more if you include the beta´s).
I would say OC potential depends more of what hardware you are going to use.
Good RAM and a good CPU stepping are in most cases more important then biosversions.
