What is the best set hard drive set up on an iMac for video editing?

what is the best set hard drive set up on an iMac for video editing? i only have one internal 2tb hard drive.

CIANCIO.mov wrote:
so is it best to edit directly off your LaCie fire wire drive, or off the internal HD and store on the external?
The second.
Which one is faster to edit with?
The internal will operate  faster but editing uses both the Final Cut Application (on the internal), and the external which is used to store and access the video that you have shot and on which is stored the Capture Caches, and which also stores and accesses the various other caches such as Video Render, Waveform etc.
Does a faster hard drive decrease rendering time?
I think it must, but I have never timed it.
whats Faster, having another internal drive or a thunderbolt or firewire 800 external drive?
I think that a second internal drive would be faster than an external Firewire drive. However, a Thunderbolt drive is said to be very fast, but I do not know whether it would be faster than a conventional internal drive. This question would best be asked of the Final Cut Discussion Groups because thay might have experience.
i would love some specs, and input on different drive setups for an imac with a single 2TB Hard dirve.
Again, the discussion groups would be the best place to answer this.
enyone. thanks,
Rendering long sections of video in the Final Cut software does take a long time, especially when it is imported from another source, such as a .mov, and when something simple like a transition is inserted or even moved or altered, or a filter is applied, rendering must be carried out in that area to see the effect properly. So you are on the right lines in thinking about how to speed it up.

  • What is the best external hard drive (USB 2.0) to get for my Mac?

Here is a question from your "average user"
I'm looking for an external hard drive for my iMac (Mac OS X 10.7.2 - only 4 GB). I was looking at 1Tb. We have a new baby so I'd like to protect my pictures, video, and scrapbooking files in addition to using it for back up.
    * Does "backing up" mean I have exact copies on both drives? (silly question I'm sure)
    * Would storing my photos/videos on an ehd help my computer run faster?
*Should I just store my video on DVD's? Does that make more sense?
Now I need help on what to look for:
*Any suggestions on size for an "average user"? Should I consider 2Tb for down the road?
*Any suggestions on brands? or websites to look at?

Firstly, congratulations on the new baby!
For ease I am going to pretend that your questions were numbered!
    1. Yes, you will have two identical copies, one on your hard drive and one on your external. Of course, you should really back up your entire hard drive.
    2. No, see above!
    3. You can do, but Lion does not include iDVD so you will have to buy iLife 11 while it is still available. Consider a 2TB external drive (the cost difference is small) and keep them there as well.
    4. Yes - see above!
    5. Look here (if you are the US):  http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MAU4S7W20T64/
Highly recommended by experienced users here, and I am about to get one, despite the additional $40 in postage!
Feel free to post back with any additional questions!

A lot depends on the size you want...physical size, I mean...see what they have at OWC, http://www.macsales.com I have thee of there drives and they are great...compatible and already formatted out-of-the-box.  But it is still better to format and partition yourself to set them up your way.

What is the best external hard drive vs price to buy? My MacBook Pro has a 500GB HD and I own 100GB of data that I wan't to backup using TimeMachine. What is the best thing to get for a good price, but something that doesn't break within a month of use. . . .

Most drives will work for your system just make sure you buy one double the size of your hard drive (1TB).  Take a look at this link this is one I have been using with my iMac for about a year with not problems.  http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent-GoFlex-External-STAC2000100/dp/B003ELOSJ G/ref=sr_1_54?ie=UTF8&qid=1315204714&sr=8-54  Do more reseach (Cnet.com)

The Apple USB superdrive would be a great choice for you, ( http://store.apple.com/ca/product/MD564ZM/A/apple-usb-superdrive?fnode=5f ) I am not certain but I am pretty sure that it has the same form factor as the MacMini (Not thickness but all the other dimenetions) so it fits just under and looks like an extension of your mac.

I was looking at WD MY PASSPORT FOR MAC and Toshiba. I want something that will work best with time capsule! Suggestions on the best external hard drive would be greatly appreciated!!!

A Time Machine backup drive should be substantially larger than the system drive.  If you have a 128 or 256 GB SSD then a 1 TB drive will suffice.  If you have a 512 GB SSD then a 2 TB drive will suffice.  As leroydouglas indicated any brand other than WD will do.
For 1 TB drives PlotinusVeritas gives some great suggestions here:

Hi, does your MacBook have Firewire, or just USB?
FW is far faster if you have that.
    Avoid Bus powered ones.

What is the best external hard drive with MacBook Pro?

I agree with Allan, and that link is also called OWC, their hard drives are great.  Have three of their Mercury Pro Elite 2 TB quad interface drives.  They will connect eSATA, Firewire 800 & 400, USB2, so broad reange of options.  Drives seem to come Mac HFS formatted, but I always reformat and partition the drives.  Service and quarantees are top notch.
They offer a wide range of drives/drive systems so like Allan said, spend some time seeing what the have.

What is the best upgrade hard drive for an A1342 (white macbook)?

Absolutely. I put a Samsung 840 in my early 2009 white macbook and it is the best computer upgrade I've ever done. I've also put an OWC SSD in my late 2009 iMac and highly recommend their drives. http://eshop.macsales.com

My first iMac arrives tomorrow and want to back everything up from my wife's work laptop as well as my own notebook and transfer to the iMac.
    Thanks.

It's all down to personal experience.   I read up extensively recently and ended up totally confused by the conflicting reports.   I actually bought a WD elements and it works fine.
Don't forget to format it Mac Extended (journaled) and make sure you have sufficient capacity for your needs ... Double the computer HD, or more.

  • What are the best External Hard Drives In your opinions?

Hi, I have quite a few Mac's G5 Quad, Power Book, down to I-macs. I would like to ask all you apples users what you think are the best External Hard Drives? I have quite a few Lacie's but am dissapointed at their reliability. have had to send at least 3 back and lost all date! (had a back-up of the back-up) ..... I have thousands of high res pictures that I would like to back-up and my entire music library of 2000 CD's. Could you please tell me what the most reliable and compatible Hard Drives are? I was thinking of getting G Drive Q's. As I saw them in the apple store. What do you guys think? Thanks.....

I assume you are thinking in terms of FireWire still? In which case I'll 2nd the OWC Oxford cases. Though I buy FW800. I have not bought any which are 'built in RAID enabled' or dual. I do have one $68 dual bay SATA drive case though connected to Sonnet Tempo SATA controller ($79). Not bootable but great.
    Best: SATA
2nd: FW800/400 - and you might want to put a FW800 PCIe controller if you use them heavily or a lot.
You want to isolate consumer firewire electronics and hard drives as far away from each other - and not share or daisy chain - too much noise on the cable interferes with drives.

  • What's the best External Hard drive to backup stuff from a Macbook??

I have over 300+ projects in Logic Pro thats like 2-3 years of hard work that i'd HATE to loose lol so whats the best external hard drive for me to back up my stuff on? Firewire is generally recommended for Macs although the newer Intel Macs will boot to USB so it isn't as critical. One handy thing is to clone your current drive to an external so if you should have problems you can actually boot from the external drive.
You don't have to get a laptop size drive just because you have a laptop. That's more a matter of size convenience. It is often recommended you avoid bus powered models and go with one that has its own power source, especially if USB.
If you are tempted to get a huge drive (e.g., 1 TB) because of extra storage space remember that an external drive is just as prone to failure as an internal drive. Go ahead and get one, but not one but two.

  • What is the best firewire hard drive for the Mac?

I want to buy an external hard drive for my G5, between 300-500 GB. What is the best kind and what should be avoided?
    Is LaCie good?
    G5 Dual 2.3 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I would have to say these are some of the best.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/
Our Recording Studios at Ball State University use them and the old director recommended them to a friend.
Also, I would make sure it has one of these chipsets in it: Oxford 911, 911+, or the 912. I have an external hard drive that has an Oxford 922 chip in it. It's fast, but it has like a 5-10 second lag before any data is moved... it really annoys me. The Firewire 800 is amazing though.
I am pretty sure these are IDE drives in enclosures. I am unsure about the SATA side of things. Check out www.barefeats.com for speed tests.

  • What's the best replacement hard drive for an early 2008 MacBook

I asked this before, but I'm looking for the best bang for the buck on hard drives. Will a 7400 drain my battery faster? Is there a unit that is quiter than others?
I've been told that the Western Digital blue series has comparability issues, are there other drives I should stay away from?

First, there are no 7400 RPM drives. There are 5200 and 5400 RPM drives and 7200 RPM drives.
A faster hard drive consumes slightly more power than a slower one, all other things being equal. So, yes, it will cause the battery to drain a little faster.
Yes, there are some drives that are quieter than others, but this will differ even within the same make and model.
WD Blue drives or "green" drives conserve power by throttleing the drive's speed. They tend to have compatibility issues with Macs.
What drive is best for you depends a lot on what you want to do with the drive and what your storage needs are.
