What is the best software to burn dual layer DVDs?

I was reading posts on a video forum and a number of the posts indicated that they had difficulty with burning software other than imgburn. However it does not run on a mac. I have used Toast for my burning. But I suspect I'll have to upgrade from Toast 7 to a newer version to burn dual layer. Another virtually universal comment was to only use Verbatum media. Should I look at another program?

Allthough Apple has dropped support of iDVD it still works with all system versions up to Mt Lion.  So if you still have it it's the best option available.  There is just no other video DVD authoring applicaiton for the Mac that is as versitile, easy to use and producing such professional looking disks.
If you don't have iDVD on your Mac you can get it by purchasing an iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com.
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

What is the best software for burning a large slideshow with 500 photos and music to DVD?

Are you talking about strictly burning an already put-together slideshow or composing one and then burning it?
My all time favorite slide show maker is Photo to Movie; you can then burn it from there or get it into iMovie and/or iDVD for the "finishing" touch. My favorite burn software is Toast, although you can use iMovie, iDVD, and Finder as well.

  • What's the best output for burning to HD DVD

I'm working on some projects that I would like to burn to HD DVD. The original footage is captured with a AVCHD camera at 1920x1080 (highest setting) then ingested to Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080 to retain the highest quality. Now I want to output them and burn to an HD DVD using Toast 9 to retain the highest quality and avoid re-encoding the data. What would be the best settings to use to export from FCE?
    Thanks,
    John
(BTW - Yes, I know HD DVD is a dead format but I've got a player and the ability to burn playable HD Discs so it's still a viable format for me!)

    Thanks Tom,
That was the first thing I tried and it came out Format : Apple Intermediate Codec, 1440 x 1080 (1888 x 1062) with Normal Size: 1920 x 1080 pixels (I'm reading form QuickTime Inspector here.)
So I'm confused. Which resolution is it really? If it is 1440x1080 am I losing quality in the down-rez?
Beyond that, I take what you're saying is that using this output it will only get encoded once going to the DVD. Is that correct?
    Thanks,
    John

  • Best strategy for buring dual layer DVD

I've got a project that won't fit on a single layer DVD, so I've got it set up for dual layer and "best quality" which results in a 7.38GB disk image.  However, iDVD 8 warned me when burning the disk images that some utilities may not be able to burn a reliable dual layer disk copy and to use iDVD instead, does this include Disk Utility?
I always use Disk Utility to make copies, iDVD took almost 7 hours to burn the disk image, I can't afford to wait that long for each copy.  So what's the best strategy for burning dual layer DVDs?

subsequent copies burn in far less time immediately after the first provide you don't quit iDvd
If you know ahead of time you'll need more than a few copies, I'd recommend burning from a disc image to the desktop and reducing the burn speed (4x or lower) I prefer to use Roxio Toast myself. But others have had success with Apple's Disc Utilities as well.

  • Burning dual layer dvd on older PowerBooks

I've seen that the newest PowerBooks can burn dual layer dvds, so I'd like to upgrade my own PowerBook, which is second to newest generation.
From what I have read so far the drive in the new PowerBook is the same I have in mine: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E. And I've heard rumors before that the drive has dual layer properties.
So it should be a simple firmware update... or what?
    Any ideas?
    17" PB 1,67 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Thanks for the link, but it seems their solution is to replace the superdrive with a dual layer drive.
And I'm too cheap for that...
But according to xlr8yourmac (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/oct05/102505.html and http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/oct05/102805.html) the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845 is able to write dual layer. The extra E on my MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E might mean it's had this feature blocked by a piece of software in OS X.
Maybe the firmware from the newer PB's would do the trick.
According to System Profiler, I'm using firmware-version DMP2.
I had hoped Patchburn (www.patchburn.de) could do the trick - but from the faq on their site it looks doubtful.
So It think this boils down to:
    - where can I get a newer firmware (the one from the newest PBs)?
    - and can I restore my old firmware (version DMP2) if the operation goes wrong?

  • To video editors: What's the best software video encoder?

I'm relatively new to the encoding world, outside of .m2v for DVD.  I have a Mac Pro Dual Quad-Core 2.4 Ghz Intel Xeon system with 14 GB of RAM and running OS X 10.7.2.  I have the latest version of Final Cut Studio, which includes Final Cut Pro 7 and Compressor.  I also have Adobe Media Encoder, but upon testing, I was (ironically) flabbergasted by the fact that Adobe's encoding software doesn't come with support for .avi output.  For that reason, it's difficult to trust it.  I love what Compressor has to offer, and its encoding quality is more than satisfactory for any and all Mac-based file types, but obviously, the format limitations outside of the Apple realm present a problem in terms of the variety I can offer a client.  I would like to have the flexibility of .flv, .wmv, .avi, etc.
Again, I love the QuickTime options of Compressor.  I have read that Flip4Mac has add-ons for the formats which I listed above, but I've never used that software for this kind of workflow.  I also have some experience with Sorenson Squeeze, but that was mainly on an Avid platform, and there were various frame size/crop issues with encoding which forced me as a user to jump through MANY hoops (none of those hoops are an issue in Compressor, but, again, file types are limited) in order to achieve my encoding goals.  However, Sorenson does offer support for every imaginable file type in its $599 Pro edition of the software.  I'd rather not spend that much just for an encoder if unnecessary, but I honestly have no real frame of reference in terms of cost-to-"output variety" ratio.
So, to the many who are much more educated and experienced than I am, I ask, in your opinion as professionals...what's the best software encoder?  Is it one of the three I have already mentioned, or is it another software with which I am not yet familiar?  I am open to any and all suggestions and opinions.  At this point, I am mostly dealing with web delivery, whether it be streaming or downloadable file types, and DVD/Blu-Ray encoding for disc burn.  However, as I'm sure you understand, you never know what kind of project will come your way, or what kind of file type and/or size a client will require on any given day.  I'm really just trying to get an education on encoding in general so I can stay somewhat ahead of the curve, and be able to deliver as many different file types as possible so I never have to tell a client, "No, I can't do that."
    Thoughts?

Sorry that you are not getting help.
I would have said that there are some excellent people I see that hang out in the forums for Final Cut etc that would.
I look more at hardware aspect and had you asked I would have recommend against the 2.4GHz in favor of 6-core 3.33 or 2.93 or something. Giving up GHz for more cores or something never works out.
Then I would have stayed with 10.6.8 (maybe keep Lion handy for testing only).
    Setup a good storage subsystem, 6 x 4GB (or 3 x 8GB when using single cpu).
A good place to start is over on www.macperformanceguide.com for setup hardware and testing.

I finally was successful in burning a CD of a slideshow I created in iPhoto, however, it is blurry. What is the best way to burn to a CD or DVD for clarity. Also, I realize if burned in iPhoto it will only be playable in iPhoto. Help! This is needed soon for a wedding reception!

What version of iPhoto are you using?  How do you plan to view the slideshow at the wedding reception, on a TV screen?  If so then you will need to send the slideshow to iDVD and burn a disk from there.
If you're in iPhoto 11 and the slideshow was created in the slideshow mode and not from an album, then go to the Share menu and select iDVD.  That will create a QT movie of the slideshow and import it into iDVD.
In iDVD select your theme and setup the menu as you'd like.  If you want the movie to begin plahying immediately when the disk is inserted into the DVD player go into the Gallery mode and drag the movie into the Autostart  bin at the left.
If you want the movie to loop continuously go to the Advanced menu and select Loop.
When you're finished setting upb the iDVD project save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will allow you to check it with DVD Player before tryingto burn to disk.  Mount the disk imnage by double clicking on it and launch DVD Player and play.  If the movie plays as you want and everything is good you can  burn to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Cd or dvd? rw or r? what is the best way to burn disk?

Im almost just lost all my songs, trying to do this before, so what is the best way for burning a cd from itunes?
I've heard its better with a cd and r (i believe that means you can only put songs on it once?)
please help! i rather not lose my hard earned and searched ituens music!

As long as you're not having to use too many CDs, and don't care that you can't erase them, then CD-Rs would be fine. If you want to try DVDs and you had problems before, first confirm what format your drive takes - some use only DVD+R (or RW), some use only DVD-R, and some can take both - and perhaps try a different brand of disk; some brands just don't work well, and some drives just seem to prefer different brands.

What is the best way to Burn a DVD Movie, do I need a specific program?

If  you're trying to copy a commercial movie and burn it to disc, then it is expressly against the Terms of Use of this community to describe any method to illegally copy or circumvent copy protection DVD's
If you've made a movie and want to author a DVD, then you should use iDVD, Toast or, if  you're really skilled, Final Cut Pro X.
If you just want to move a movie to a DVD, which probably won't play on a DVD player, then just insert a blank DVD, and move it over from the finder.  Click burn.

  • I am looking to implement a POS system using my iPad, What is the best software and hardware for POS?

One of my clients wants to transition to an iPad POS system and I want to know what are the best software and hardware options?
I am going to completely upgrade the hardware so I'll need solutions for card readers, printers, cash drawers and iPad enclosures that are compatible with an iPad POS system.
    Any help would be appreciated!

We're a small business and we decided to go on iPad POS deployment and started researching. We chose Maclocks iPad POS stand since it is the most secured way to use your iPad as a POS plus its design is awesome and takes 2 minutes to set it up! They have it for iPad mini too.

  • What is the best software for home movie editing

Have some old home movies that were digitalized from 8mm film to VOB format.  Want to edit and clean them up and reformat into modern mp4/H.264 format. What is the best software/app to use on iMAC running 10.9.2?  Thank you for any suggestion.

I would expect that iMovie would be quite adequate for this. If you find it lacking, or if you're just curious, take a look at Final Cut Pro X. There is a thirty day, fully functional trial download so you can find out first and whether it's worth $300 for your purposes.
