i just bought a used macbook pro with 2.4GHz core 2 duo and 2 gb memory. what would be the best upgrade to OS. is that enough to run Mountain Lion?
my wife has a new macbook with mountain lion and i prefer alot of the way it looks compared to leopard.

Depending upon what your machine is and it's RAM amount if it can go to 10.7 or 10.8
We need to know the Model Identifier and the RAM amount.
Older machines that came with 10.5 or 10.4 originally are not advised to proceed any further than 10.6.8 due to age and performance issues on the newer OS X versions of 10.7 and 10.8. Best buy a new machine if you want 10.8, doesn't make sense to buy software and have a slow machine with a older box. Either sell/donate it or use it for backup.
Also 10.7 and above will NOT run your PPC based software your currently running.
So before you upgrade, it's best to take stock of all your third party software and if they will run on the newer OS X verison. This site can assist.

Back in June 2010, I developed a website for a client which included some interactive forms created with LiveCycle Designer 8.0 (came with Adobe CS3.) He recently brought to my attention the fact that the data filled in by his customers on the forms does not display in PDF docs on his iPhone or Android smartphone (the PDFs and filled-in data display fine via desktop browsers.) Can anyone suggest the best (least expensive, least painful... I don't want to rewrite his site in HTML5) solution? E.g., upgrade my LiveCycle Designer 8.0 version and reinstall the forms on his site? Would that be to Acrobat X Pro? Does a second set of forms need to be created for mobile format? Any idea whether these apps would resolve the issue described above? (Filled-in data on forms created on desktops not displaying on mobile devices?) I am looking for a new Macbook Air for college and was wondering what upgrade would be the smartest decision. I was thinking of a 13" air with:

The former option would save me approximately $60. What are the benefits of an upgraded processor? I have heard they would make my computer overheat more easily and the fan would be significantly louder. This is making me question if the processor is worth it. In addition, I am unsure of how beneficial the 8GB as opposed to 4GB of RAM would be. How can I optimize the speed of my laptop if I want to run Windows through Parallels? That is essential.

If you buy a 2013 model you can save up to $400+ from online resellers who are clearing out the "old" model.
However the "old" model is nearly 100% identical in performance .

When I bought my iBook I initially installed OS X 10.3.4. I was then given an upgrade CD a year or so later as part of a deal to buy my partner an iBook. I have since lost the upgrade CD but still have the original startup disk, which I have recently had to use to do an erase and restore after a problem.
As my computer still works fine, I want to upgrade the OS.
I am aware that I cannot get Snow Leopard because it uses Intel and obviously my iBook isn't as fast as modern Macs, but what is the most up-to-date OS I can get?
Also, does anyone know where I can get this upgrade?

If it shipped OS X 10.3.4 installed it is likely the Early 2004 model with a 1.0 GHz or 1.2 GHz processor. If your computer meets the other Leopard installation system requirements you can install Leopard Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Note that Leopard requires 9 GB of disk capacity for installation. In addition you should have a minimum of 15% of your total disk capacity as contiguous free space to avoid directory corruption. Besides, the HDD in your computer, if it is the original with which it shipped, is getting old and liable to failure without notice as the average life of an internal HDD is approximately 3 to 5 years. A newer, larger capacity HDD is advisable.
I would also suggest maxxing out your RAM to 1.25 GB by adding a 1 GB module in the user serviceable slot.

There are many variables, so no one can say for sure. That said, one way to get an idea whether more RAM will help or not, is to check Page outs and Swap used. Hello Everyone, We create E-books nothing to do with designing and some time (Maths-Equations). Currently, We using PM 6.5 on win:98 with all that old software installed. However, We looking for upgrade either Win7 or Win-Xp. I tried on windows 7 to open my old PM 6.5 files in In-design CS5 everything worked fine. Just got stuck with "No fill patterns are supported right now. That patterns are those maths equation in that old 6.5 files which are not showing up right now in In-Design. So, if anyone could help me to fix this. I'll be glad. If there is no fix for this as of now. So at-least give me some alternative to fix this issue or some suggestion on what to do next. What are my options...? Because those old 6.5 files are very important for us and we use those files every time for reference in our new books or model papers. Our main concern is to upgrade to what we have no cue...? Thanks.

If I understand you, the bad news is you'll need to recreate those equations in ID, or in some other application and then place them.

Migration you deploy Java component and extract data form 5.3 and import in 10.
still lots of work to be done like and implementation as there are pre-requisite.
second approach does not need to extract all data from 5.3 system(apart from Ruleset,if at all its required)
I never migrate workflows better to create new one identical and faster i believe .
Second approach is little time consuming but good from my point of view.
In java stack people normally go with 2 system landscape .
there has been client where in ABAP people go with 3 system landscape.
now where tricky consulting part play and which data to be imported where.
and few other points needed to be looked like when you use tools and import data.
you actually import all transaction data which contain all active and inactive
expired.
in you go with 2nd option you will have only valid data to start with.

What is the Best upgrade: X-Fi Titanium or X-Fi Titanium HD?

I have a 5. Surround sound speaker setup with my currently X-Fi Extreme Gamer PCI sound card. But I want ot upgrade to a newer model that utilizes a PCi-e x slot. I'm stuck between the X-Fi Titanium or X-Fi Titanium HD. I like the HD model, BUT i'm not sure if my minijacks will work with the HD? I also have a Turtle Beach HPA2 5.1 Headsets which has 3 minijacks.
Will the HD model be able to accept minijack connectors, like is there a RCA to minijack-female converter?

would the X-Fi Titanium of last generation work better? I just like protecti've shroud of both models, but does the first generation titanium protect against EMI?

What's the best approach to migrate to Snow Leopard using the time machine?

I have a time capsule, and have noticed the restore from backup option once I had to replace the HD on my MacBook Pro.
I am about to buy a new MacBook Pro which will probably ship with Snow Leopard, and am wandering, if when I setup the new OS I can restore from a backup of my old system?

don't use the full system restore from backup option with a new computer. that can only be used on the same exact computer. also, that option erases the destination drive and replaces it with the copy of the backed up system. this is not what you want.
when you first turn on the new computer you'll get a setup assistant which will give you an option to Migrate your user data and applications from a TM backup. you can also do it later using Migration Assistant located in Applications/Utilities.

What is the best iMac setup without spending a fortune?

Okay so I am looking to purchase a new iMac. I do a little video editing and a decent amount of photo editing and music editing. I will probably do some gaming also, but I know most of the hardware upgrades don't really affect the gaming ability. So here is my question. I want to get a 27" iMac, and I'm wondering what are the best upgrades for the money? I want the best performing system possible without spending too much money. Basically, what system setup (Ghz, RAM, drive type/size, i5 vs i7, etc) will give me the most noticeable difference in performance. I don't want to invest $200 more for i7, $200 more for bigger RAM, etc if there is only going to be a very minor performance improvment. I hope this all make sense, and ANYBODY's help is MUCH appreciated!!! Thanks guys!!!!

I would say any of the 27" iMacs would be a great solution. If you tend to keep computers for 4-5 years then it's wise to invest in the most power iMac today. In 4 years you will have a 18, 16, 15 and a 11 year old and you can be sure their interests will change. In that case I'd probably opt for the i7 CTO iMac with a 2TB HD. Do not buy additional RAM from Apple, buy that from reputable vendors such as OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial. Upgrading RAM is incredibly simple taking less than 10 minutes to do. I would upgrade the RAM to 12 or 16GB. I would stay with the base graphics card and consider getting the SSD option which will enhance speed.
If your habits are to keep computer for 1-2 years and then recycle them then either of then I'd probably opt for the base 27" iMac with the same HD noted above and RAM recommendations.

I'm not sure what APIs/setup to use for this situation:
A company wants to store data projects they do for clients. Each year, the data fields are set (as a result of gov't requirements) and they won't change for any client project for that year. however, the fields required can (and usually do) change every year. So things they require this year, might not be needed the next year and new fields might be introduced.
While there are likely to be many common fields from year to year, there's no way to guarantee which ones will remain consistent. They also want to be able to do searches on the data and fields, for projects within a year and across years.
What's the best framework/API/configuration to handle this? EJB? Simple JDBC? If so, how should the database be handled? Won't it have to constantly create new fields in a table? Or is there another way to handle this?

dang, I really have to start over? I finally got all this stuff working again. well, hopefully it won't be as big a pain this time since the data won't be coming from a different machine. After completing the Migration Assistant process, I had to reinput a bunch of serial numbers for apps, reinstall print and mouse drivers, etc... I've finally got the new machine up and running smoothly and now I gotta start over? Sigh.
I was hoping that either I could rename the current account after deleting the other one, or just move everything from one account to the other and then delete the 'RJM' account.
ok, so it sounds like here are the steps I need to take:
- make another full cloned backup of this current machine in Super Duper
- reboot this machine using the advice in the first post, wipe everything clean and reinstall the OS
- create a new account like 'user1' and re-do software update (which is like 2.5 gig worth of stuff) and takes like an hour even on a high speed connection
- then re-do the migration assistant process to the properly named account
- then delete the 'user1' account
does that sound right?
