What is the Best Usage to Prolong MBA Battery Life?

Hello,
I have a new (1/27/2011) MacBook Air 13" (4G, 256G, 2.13Ghz CPU).
This is being written: 4/29/2011. For some time my charge indicator has not gone above 99% except very occasionally, and then, very briefly. I have noted an apparent decrease in battery 'life' (how long I can run the laptop from full charge to full discharge). Although I usually have only a browser (multiple tabs), WiFi (no Bluetooth) and, sometimes, a word processing application open with brightness at about 60%, but  I don't usually get, lately, more than 5 hours max. For example I have running since fully charged (99%) for 2:40 min with the usage pattern described above, and I now have 39% power showing.
My normal usage pattern is to charge the battery fully and then let it discharge completely. If possible, I let it rest for at least a couple of hours fully charged on the charger, and fully discharged off the charger. This is not always possible but I probably do it 40 percent of the time, at least.
"About this Mac" (More Info) shows 66 cycles and Full Charge capacity as 6354 mAh and a capacity of 94%. CocoBattery 2.7 shows 66 cycle and 6352mAh, and age of the Mac as 19 weeks.
I feel that this decrease in ability to hold a charge is excessive compared to what Apple indicates is normal (80% loss in 2 years or 300 cycles). At this rate I will be at 80% of original capacity in 9 months, and 80% of capacity in about 200 cycles.
I have read several of the excellent posts on this forum as well as the Apple info on batteries, battery cycles, and laptop batteries referenced here, but still am confused as the best way to proceed in order to prolong battery life.
Would changing my usage pattern extend the working life of my MBA? Specifically (but not exclusively), would I be better off running on the charger more often, even if I were unable to fully charge or discharge the battery each time? As I understand it doing this will decrease my cycle count per unit of time, but it will also mean that I more frequently begin charging (or discharging) before current capacity (no pun intended) has reached maximum (or minimum).
If the battery were more easily replaced, I would be less concerned (though not happy ) for, otherwise, I am truly pleased with this elegant and generally capable computer.
Any information anyone can provide would be very much appreciated.
Pete

  • What is the best way to preserve your battery?

I'm new to macs and I would like to know the best way to prolong my battery life, is it better to keep it plugged in while you can and disconnect it only when necessary or is it better to let your battery run down then fully charge it again.

See Apple - Batteries and About Notebook Batteries
    This is especially important:
    Standard Maintenance
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time.
Apple recommends charging and discharging its battery at least once per month.

Personally most of my co-workers are using the Mophie case. They are great quality but can be pretty pricey. All of my fellow co-workers have been using this case to help with the upsetting battery drain that comes with ios5. I have seen people drop the the iPhone with this case on and seems to be a good sturdy case with an extra 9 hour battery life. Anyway's here is their web site if you want to look into these cases further.

Can you identify the symbol using the above guide?

Just a friendly comment that the list described on this link is incomplete.  If you are a rep of the site, you should update it to include additional symbols, such as the personal hotspot icon, the LTE icon, and the bluetooth device battery level icon.

  • What is the best way to store a battery?

    Hi,
I have an extra MBP battery. What is the best way to store this extra battery? Should I store it when it is fully charged? or Should I store it when it is half full? Is it necessary to use that batter once in a while?
    Thank you beforehand.

If you're storing it for a long time, put it away when it's about half full. If you have a couple of batteries for your MacBook, I'd recommend swapping batteries once a month or so to extend the life of both batteries.

  • Satellite U200: What is the best way to use a battery?

Sorry to ask a dumb question but this U200 is my first ever laptop. ok, I've already done what most PC mags tell you, ie fully charge the battery then run untill empty then repeat process two or three times, it's suppose to get all the cells within the battery working.
Now what's the best thing to do, carry on like that or should I wait untill the battery is say half empty or so & then plug the charger in?
I believe it's not good to run the laptop with a full battery & the charger plugged in all the time, so what do you guy's do when you want to use your laptop for say 6 hours or so?

    Hi
    >believe it's not good to run the laptop with a full battery & the charger plugged in all the time.
Well, the new notebook and battery generation allows using the battery and the AC adaptor at the same time.
There is not bad memory effect as with early batteries!
So my notebook is connected to the main power and the battery is always plugged-in.
This has no bad influence on the battery performance. But you should know that there is a battery charge limitation.
After about 500times of completely charge and discharge procedures the battery will lose slowly the performance. This is nothing unusual!
PS: Note: In the user manual you will find some useful tips and information how to handle the battery!
    Best regards

  • What is the best way to increase my battery's lifetime?

    Hi everyone,
I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch: 2.53GHz, this is my . And I can surely say....it is a million times better than PC...In fact, now I really realized that PC *****...I loved my mac since the first time a saw it...
Well here goes my question: I use my notebook almost all day long. Asking for tips on how I should use my battery in a way to increase its lifetime for a salesman on a mac's strore he said that the best way to do this is by recharging my battery when its reach nearly 25% and then stop recharging in more or less 97% and i've been doing it since then. He said to me that keep my notebook with the power cord on all the day it's not a good idea. What should I do?Am I doing right?
    Thanks

Fine to run on AC with the battery charged much of the time, just not all the time (i.e. not for days/weeks). Best to run on battery for an hour or two per day, totaling 1-2 cycles per week.

  • What is the best way to maintain my battery?

What is the ideal charge cycle to be maintained?

    Here's what Apple says:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
Now I'm gonna share a dirty little secret about all lithium batteries: Fact is, the biggest killers of these batteries are frequent full discharge/recharge cycles & heat. I'm well aware what Apple recommends, but I'm telling you that if you want your battery to last avoid discharging below 35 ~ 40% of capacity as much as possible & avoid heat. Every 3 ~ 4 months, it's OK to discharge to ~ 35% of capacity & then recharge to full. More often than that is not needed & will do more harm than good.
The battery in the MacBook Pro I'm typing on right now is over 5 years old & still going strong...long past its rated life span. Don't know how much longer it will last, but if you keep in mind the biggest killers of these batteries, & act accordingly, yours will last as well.

  • Satellite U405 - What is the best way to increases battery life

    Hi everyone!
I've been looking for this quite a bit and all I could find are conflicting answers and some confusing instructions... :)
Even the PDF file for my U405 has some conflicting tips (is it recommended to fully discharge it or not?)
Let's say that I don't want to remove it and store it with a 40% charge in a low temperature location (?) because I also want to trust it as a UPS (power failures are common where I stay).
So, in short, what is the best way to prolong my battery life to its maximum? Should I fully discharge it once a month or only half way through? Should it never be fully charged or that's actually a good thing?
Thanks in advance for any wisdom anyone can offer on this!
    David

The best way would be indeed to put it out of the notebook, but you already said, you won't do this.
So, I would say to fully unload the battery once in a while and load it to a maximum.
This is all I can tell you right now, but don't know how much this will increase the battery's life.

  • What's the best solution for audio out of sound files from a MacBook Air to both an amplifier and to a subwoofer amplifier? I'm using the MBA to play sound files for worship services at our church.

I have a MacBook Air (13", 1.7GHz, 8GB RAM, 500GB SSD) that I'll be using to play sound files (primarily organ and piano) for worship services at my church. We'll be using a QSC RMX2450 650 Watts/Channel amplifier with Community CPL-27 speakers and also a JBL SUB 250P powered subwoofer with its own amplifier. What's the best option for getting sound out from the Mac to both of these amplifiers?

if you work with own recorded sounds you might wanna have a music program where you want to work with samples, steinberg has got very good ones (so they say)... but their really really ( ²) expensive(that's why almost no one haves them), magix haves good ones too bu their more for 'unprofessional' use, ableton haves really good ones too and they're not to difficult to use (if you know a bit of those programs you learn very quickly) and if you don't get them, there is a sort of manual built in it which explains and lets you do things to start (basics)
i hope this helped, btw stereo speakers are always better if you buy good ones (no pc speakers), but if you don't think you need them, don't buy them...
so again, i hope you have some ideas now

  • What is the best way to discharge and recharge your MBPR?

I've had my MBPR 13" Mid 2014 model for a week and it already reached 5 cycles. I usually discharge it down to almost 2% and recharge it 100%.
I've read some articles recommending that the best discharge rate is not lower than 20% while recharging it to not more than 85% BUT this is not mentioned by Apple in the battery maintenance section. This method is recommended by Apple ONLY WHEN you plan to store your laptop for a longer period of time.
So what is really the best way to prolong the battery life of your MBPR when you use it DAILY for 2 to 4 hours of word processing and web browsing and occasional watching an episode or two of a tv show?

The advice on this site is consistent with everything that I know:

    and:

Apple did have recommendations on this at one time but those sites are gone. Liability?
