Ready to convert old VHS tapes to DVD. What is considered to be the best on the market now for Macs? Thank you for your help.

I've played around with countless other conversion systems, ranging in price from $79 to $399. Short verison, this is the ONLY unit to own. No dropped frames at all, even with questionable quality tapes, no jitter, great color, excellent sound quality. Zero setup with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11.
This is a prosumer deck. The time code function is alone worth the price if you have old analog footage. Absolutely NO "Out Of Sync" audio.
ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey but it WORKS.
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material.
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11. VERY easy and 100% "lossless"

Ok - well I just bought a Nokia 6680 because I read in the support pages that it was supposedly "compatible" with MAC. Like many other 6680 users I see in this forum, "compatibility" seems to have a very loose meaning. The 6680 is just compatible with ISYNC I agree, but just abut everything else doesn't work - SMS from Address Book etc etc. My question to those out there more knowledgable than me - is as follows; Is there any consensus at all on which 3G Cellphone make and model is the best to use with Mac OSX 10.4.2? Alternatively if anyone knows of any links to pages with reviews of mac compatible phones please let me know. I am really pi**ed off that my 6680 won't do what I had hoped it would.

The inability to SMS from Address Book, is a bug my end or fact? - even though it appears you can do it, is just very very frustrating. I know you should never assume anything but after 2 years of almost perfect use with a t610 and k700i, the fact that the device is labelled up in the isync devices pages would 'suggest' that this would be ok.
My iMac has Bluetooth 2 - does this affect anything? I've Salling Clicker 3 installed - should this affect things - I doubt it.
Syncing works nicely - eventually. Although the ability to set a sync schedule (like you used to be able to do every hour), would be most welcome.
Hopefully an update will see an end to this nonsense.

What's the best Inkjet Printable Blank DVD for consistant printing ?

I'm looking for advice for a reliable, consistant manufacturer of printable DVD-R's.
I burn and print short runs for clients at home, and I'm having problems finding a consistant print surface, which is a problem for reprints if i use disks from a diferent spindle. Even from the same supplier, disks have a variety of width inner circle, so I have to redesign the face before printing.
I've also found that a lot of the disks labelled as white are slightly yellow, and often have a wide inner ring that's white, but appears darker than the rest of the disk surface.
I've been using some Verbatim disks recently. They have a consistant diameter inner circle, but they are a bit yellow.
Does anyone have any suggestions for consistant inkjet printable media ?

I use Maxell, (can't beat the quility of the disk) and they are print to center media. I haven't noticed any yellow cast them, they seem white to me, from spindle to spindle.
There is a slight difference in density of color on the very center, but your going to find that on any DVD, due to the fact that that part of the disk doesn't have a reflective layer like the burnable area of the disk does, this is normal.
The printable area of Maxell disk is consistant, doesn't change from batch to batch.

My last question was deleted I guess because I was not specific enough. I have a Sony DCR-DVD108 DVD Handycam® Camcorder which writes everything onto mini DVDs. I am looking for a good video converter to convert my home movies with. I am using Roxio Crunch, but it doesn't do as good of a job as I had hoped. What is the best video converter to use?

I own all rights to DVDs which I myself have created, and I give myself permission to copy said DVDs for whatever reasons I wish. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store" because I am in no way trying to "work around" any sort of DRM, and I created the home movies and in no way was the iTunes Store involved; that is unless somehow a movie of my nephew's birthday is now available on iTunes. And I don't own an iPod video, I own an iPhone, which is why the question says "What is the best video converter FOR IPHONE?" and is why I am in an iPhone forum.

Hi Mazdauk, To convert ASF to AVI, I recommend you the iorgsoft video converter which I have been using. It claims to support ASF as input and AVI as output. Anyway, I haven't converted ASF to AVI, most of the time, I convert MTS to MP4. You can have a try first.

This camcorder records in several ways, including AVCHD2, mpeg4 iframe, and 3d, at least that seems to be the case from a quick reading of its specs.
If you get the latest update for fcpx, it will handle video shot in 60P. That is 10.0.4
Here is what Apple says it supports, and one version of the 900 seems to be supported.
I think the Apple site is a little behind its own software update, as one advantage of the new update is that it handles 60P.
Maybe I am missing something, but I wonder what would happen if you get the latest update for fcpx, and try your card again. I did find that fcpx now supports my sony dslr at 60P.

The choice of conversion software is a personal choice, I have around a dozen applications that will tackle AVI's, however VisualHub is not one of them, not because there is anything wrong with it but rather I have enough such applications in my arsenal already.
I would use mpegstreamclip in most scenarios for what you are wanting to do but maybe not always. It is a good idea to have a few applications to choose from as not all do the same thing. mpegstreamclip has a few more options than some bog standard applications without becoming overburdening with choices.
You might want to try a few applications yourself before deciding on the software for you. isquint is a free limited version of visualhub, you might want to give that a whirl to get a feeling for visualhub.
Be aware though that quality conversions do not happen quickly, claims of being faster than other applications may well be correct, but are usually a trade off against quality. Again you need to choose your software to reflect your preferred balance between speed and quality.

What is the best way to format Videos for ipod touch? Used Quicktime Pro/ Export (iPhone setting). Videos aren't as crisp as downloaded Videos. Compressors /ipod video Setting also looks crapy (with bitrate med & High). What should I use?

Visualhub is a transcoder with multiple input and output formats with specific setting for iPod,iPod touch. Costs around $19-used to work great but recently everything I convert suffers audio crash than closes out the player. Hopefully they will fix it.
Elgato H.264 hardware transcoder is $99 dollars(USB stick that plugs in to Mac)-speeds up encoding of any file quicktime can handle, settings for apple tv, iphone/touch, ipod,Sony PSP. Worth the cost if you transcode a lot of video for the Touch or own an elgato HD tuner. Files work flawlessly and look great.
Mpeg streamclip-free. Works great, has presets or can customize the output.
