What is the best way of compressing a large 3 hour final cut file. I shot the play and it is in final cut and I rndered it so now I have a 22gb file that I need to put on a dvd . Any suggestions

Presuming your menus aren't complicated(include audio or video) the total size for the MPG-2 and AC3 files should probably be under 8GB for a dual layer disk. The inspector will tell you the estimated size. 2-pass varible bit rate would be recommended.
Trying to fit 3 hours on a DVD-5 will only bring very noticable quality hits. Compressor will let you change the average bit rate so that you can fit 174 minutes but trade-off isn't worth it in my opinion.
Be aware that dual-layer -R and +R media may not play well for everyone everywhere.
I presume you are not making 1000 or more copies? If you were replication could solve this.
One other alternative would be to break-up the show into two parts and spread it across two DVD-5s.

I assume you are referring to compressing the file size of the resultant song, rather than compressing the audio dynamic range of the tracks in the song.
GarageBand only outputs .AIFF files which are uncompressed 16-bit, 44.1KHz stereo audio.
As far as I know, there is no point in compressing the GarageBand song before importing it into iMovie, because iMovie uses the same format for audio internally as GarageBand does.
You can open a GarageBand song in iTunes and use iTunes to convert it to an MP3, but when you import that MP3 into iMovie it's going to up-sample the MP3 back into AIFF format anyway.

Is converting the colorspace asking for trouble? Very possibly! If you were to do that to a PDF that was going to be used in the print industry, they'd shoot you! On the other hand, if the PDF was going online or on a mobile device – they might not care. And if the PDF complies with one of the ISO subset standards, such as PDF/X or PDF/A, then you have other rules in play. In general, such things are a user preference/setting/choice.
On the larger question – there are MANY MANY ways to approach PDF optimization. Compression of image data is just one of them. And then within that single category, as you can see, there are various approaches to the problem. If you extend your investigation to other tools such as PDF Enhancer, you'd see even other ways to do this as well.
As with the first comment, there is no "always right" answer. It's entirely dependent on the user's use case for the PDF, requirements of additional standard, and the user's needs.

I am struggling with the best way to post HD, as well as SD videos to the web - Vimeo as well as YouTube sites. Some of my files are up to an hour long, and above.
I've tried mp4, H.264 compression, multi-pass, as well as ProRes in various settings. The files are either too small or too large. I have an stand-alone Flash encoder, but it seems to take an inordinate amount of time.
My computer only has a Duo Core - its the first Intel processor. Is it too slow to process these large Video files?

There are quite a few videos on YouTube that are up to 3 hours long. If you are having issues uploading long YouTube movies, have you contacted their tech support?

Hi! New on the site, and I signed up specifically to ask the best way to import one .psd file into another, including the paths on the paths palette.
Almost all of my Photoshop drawings make heavy use of vector paths, which I then stroke using using PS natural-media brushes and the "stroke paths" function (usually with "simulate pressure" checked.) Also, my .psd files tend to be, um, HUGE... and I typically break up a whole drawing into separate PS files and then assemble all of them into one final finished graphic.
I have no trouble moving raster stuff from file to file. Just put all the layers I want to transfer into a group and drag the group to the other .psd. Works fine, including layer masks. But I have not found a good way to get vector paths from the Paths palette of one .psd to another. Of course I can select paths and copy them to the Win clipboard, switch to the other .psd, and paste them back in. The drawback to that method is that I lose the correct size relation between the results of previously done "stroke paths" operations (on raster layers) and the paths that generated them. Sometimes the copied-in paths are way too large, sometimes way too small, never Just Right.
As I'm sure most of you know, if you resize an entire Photoshop document from within PS, any paths it contains are correctly resized along with everything else. That's no longer true after grouped raster layers are dragged over to another document but paths are copied and pasted in. The size connection is lost. (Location placement, too.)
I WANT those paths! After I bring a piece of a drawing into the full final drawing, what looked good when I was working on it separately often doesn't look right any longer and I want to re-stroke those paths using different brush diameter, opacity, etc., or maybe even a completely different brush.
I've tried bring outside .psd files in as smart objects with the Place command but either that doesn't work or I'm not doing it right. Using Place, the paths in the Placed document don't come in at all.
I'll be very grateful for any hints or strategies any of you knowledgeable folks can give me. Thanks very much!

1. Connect the two macs - firewire, ethernet, sneakernet as suits you - and copy the iPhoto Library Folder from Old Machine to New Machine. Drag it from Home/Pictures to the same location on the new machine.
2. Because all the files 'belong' to the account on the old machine, you have to update the file permissions: hence Download BatchMod from

And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:

Drag the first clip to the timeline and click ""yes" on the message that asks if you want to "change sequence settings to match clip settings". You're all set to edit.

What is the best way to compress for streaming internet use?

I have been having some problems using compressor when using the Mpeg-4 internet streaming option. I am compressing from Final Cut Pro HD.
When I send these 1 to 2 1/2 minute clips to compressor, it opens up the batch monitor, and within a split second, it vanishes and doesn't compress at all. What could be causing this?
Am I doing something wrong?

Compressor is a good way to do it if you have a large batch and have other things to do. For quick one-offs, I use QT 7 Pro.
They get all the way to the Batch Monitor, then you never see the successful message? I would try some trial and error experiments. Export to QT mov. Then load that to compressor. The link between FCP and Compressor could be broken. It happened to me.

I was able to upload a ppt converted SWF, so I know I can do it, but I'm not doing something correcly with the simulation, and I'm not sure what. I can add the file to my Content and it appears to want to upload in Connect, but I just get the wait screen and no controls to play the file. I've also aggregated the ppt SWF and the simulation SWF, and it won't recognize this either. I'm close, but I'm just missing something.

LabVIEW 7.1: From what I can tell, you can only add dynamic VIs one file at a time, while for support files, you can add entire folder contents.
Have you considered uprading to LabVIEW 8.0? Things like this have been improved dramatically! You can keep all your dynamic VIs in a project folder, then add it to the build specification in one click.

What is the best way to manage a large picture with many tiny objects?

The picture in question is a mosaic made up of thousands of tiny shapes in Illustrator. It is about 28 in x 48 in but there is white space around the image. I am less than a quarter way through, and I am noticing that Ai is starting to be slow when refreshing the screen e.g. when changing zoom. The file is 13MB. I am concerned that the image will be too large for Ai to handle efficiently. Would you advise me to break the image down into quarters and put them together right at the end, or do you think Ai will cope with the size and complexity efficiently? If I have to make separate sections, is there a helpful technique to use? Thanks in advance.

It is 64-bit Windows 7 running the latest version of Illustrator CC on 6GB of RAM and a 3.10GHz Intel processor with a GeForce GTS 450 graphics card with the latest driver.
Symbols would be a nice solution, because there is a limited set of shapes and colours. However, the pieces have to be aligned with precision (I am working on 400% zoom) and I don't know if symbols could be aligned as easily as shapes?

which worked all fine and dandy client side. Then when I attempted to create a SQL Server Agent Job, this failed as a result of SQL Server side not being able to execute dynamic Excel commands.
So do I need to therefore try and do this function via Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0 commands? And where can I find the commands and syntax to open and save as? I have to Open a .xlsx file, save it as a .xls file, and then open this newly created .xls file and
then save it as a .csv file.

I think you might be over complicating things.
You can use SSIS with Excel Source/Destination connections to read in, or output to an excel sheet/file.
