What is the best way to completely segregate one VLAN?

I have 3750x with existing small business server and all computers on one vlan. This vlan connects to other switches with fibre trunk sfp's.
I want build a new forest utilising vlans in the normal way, what is the easiest way to segregate this vlan?
The site is running 24/7

How big of a install is this ? Best pratices tell us that 250 devices per subnet / vlan is ideal. If you are looling for segemntaion ideas here are a few thoughts.
1. Segment by location. Perhaps floors 1 is on vlan 100. Floor 2 is on vlan 200.
2. Segment by function. Perhaps account area is vlan 100 and procution is vlan 200.
3. Segment by services. Perhaps all pcs get vlan 100 and servers get vlan 200 printers get vlan 300
You can secure and further segment vlans with ACLs. Blocking types of traffic from talk to other traffic, meaning VLANS
You can use VTP to publish VLANs across your network.

The easiest way is to put a new installation of your OS onto the Mac.
Insert your Install disk 1 into to the drive and then Restart, and hold down the C key to take you to the installation windows.
Select your language, the start up Volume and choose Erase and Install.
At the point your registration process starts, abandon the registration, quit and eject the disk and switch of the computer.
This will allow the new user a freshly installed system, whereby they can complete the registration process themselves. Make sure you hand on the disks.
If you want to be extra thorough, you can, booted from your Install disk use Disk Utility to Zero All Data, before doing the Erase and Install described above, and if you want to be paranoid thorough, you can choose to overwrite the disk with several passes before doing the installation described first. Note this latter process can take from several hours to several days depending on the selection and the size of your internal hard drive.

In the next couple weeks, I'm going to be buying a MacBook Pro. I want to transfer my whole library (with all rolls, albums, slideshows, etc) intact. What is the best way to do this? I assume it's as easy as copying the whole iPhoto Library Folder, correct? Should I copy the iPhoto .plist files as well?

You're right about what to copy. Just the entire iPhoto Library folder into the Pictures folder on the new MBP. I'd also download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. This is just a little insurance that the ownership and permissions are set correctly after the transfer. INo need copy the preference file as one will be generated when you first open iPhoto on the MPB and the file paths in it will be unique to the current Mac. Best to start with a new one.

What is the best way of creating a one-time backup using DPM 2012R2?

Due to some severe tape issues, we have lost a lot of our long-term storage data.
I schedule a recovery point on our servers every Friday, once a week. We retain this data for the 64 weeks (the maximum amount of versions DPM allows.)
Management needs me to put one recovery point from each month to tape (preferably from the beginning of each month.)
From the DPM console, I have been manually searching each server and running a recovery job from each "short term" recovery point we still have in the system.   I am recovering this data to a large disk array that I'm using as a staging
area. My intention is to take this data and put it onto tape using DPM and leave it there forever (20 years.)
Since the space on the array is limited, I can only recover a few months at a time before having to delete the recoevered data to make way for the next group.
The way DPM works it seems you must have a protection group for every backup job you run; so if I have to repeat this process 8 times, I'll end up with 8 different protection groups all assigned to the host running the staging array. NOTE:
the host running the staging array will be wiped in the near future.
What would be the best method to carry this task out ?

Hi,
What you can do is protect the staging server by using a single share - lets call it STAGING for simplicity.
Perform your first set a restores and restore to the staging share, you can create meaningful subdirectories one for each data source you are restoring.
Now protect the STAGING share using DPM - protect using long term to tape only, Frequency yearly, and set retention policy for 20 years.
Perform an ad-hoc backup (right-click the data source and create recovery point to tape)
When that completes, delete the sub-directories under the staging share and then repeat the process of restoring more data then backing up the same share.  When you are all done, you can remove the protection group, but maintain the tape backups
so they will be available for restores.

No. Unfortunately there is no such mechanism defined by the MST spec. The manual configuration of the mst regions is actually the trick that makes the protocol relatively simple... but not very flexible I admit.
If you are running CatOS however there is a way to achieve this: VTP3 will take care of propagating the MST configuration along the VTP domain.
Else, you'll have to configure the switches one by one, which is going to be painful and will disturb your traffic.
You can take this opportunity to plan a little bit for the future. What you can do is create in the MST configuration more instances than you need and map evenly all the vlans to them.
Suppose you currently need 2 instances and 10 vlans and that you may require up to 10 instances in the future:
- create 10 instances by mapping 400 vlans to each (well, of course map the 10 vlans you currently use to the two instances you currently need).
- make sure that the vlans for the 8 instances you don't currently need are not created (here I mean not created in the VTP database).
Our MST code is optimized so that an instance is not run unless there is at least one vlan that is mapped to it and that is active on one port in the switch (the only exception is instance 0 that always exists.)
Thus, the current setup does not require more resources that if you only had configured two instances with 10 vlans. Now, if you need a new vlan in one of your two current instances, you have plenty to choose from. If you need some vlans with a different topology: just use one that is mapped to an usued instance. This way, you can at least quietly add/remove vlan without disrupting the traffic because you are not modifying the VTP configuration.

We basically have one imac that we all use (one user account).
We also have our own iphones with our own apple id.
What i would like to get my head around is setting up each iphone individually to use itunes.(i.e music, videos, contacts).
It seems that every time i sync/ update iphone os, via itunes, apps and contacts change. Also today i only just got around to update one of the iphones to ios5. Now all the photos have been deleted???

suggests using contacts groups.
When syncing contacts, you can choose to sync all of your contacts or only selected groups.
You can select a group of contacts to which all new contacts created on your iOS device will be added.
You can set up groups in the Address Book application.
If you are all going to use the same iTunes apps library, turn off "Automatically sync new apps" in the apps tab just below the list of apps. Then you won't get new apps on your device unless you select them.

Open the Get Info window for the old drive. Click the Lock icon on the bottom of that window and type in your password. In the permissions area click the Plus sign ( + ) and Add your Username to it and set it to Read & Write. Close that window. you should now have full access to all the files.

Though the PDF does give a basic idea as to how we can go about the deployments using ANT and EM in Test and Prod, it doesn't really give extensive details. For eg. ANT would obviously need huge ANT scripts to be written for migrations to multiple Test servers, etc.
Similarly, when we talk about EM, does it mean each of the services has to be manually deployed on Production ?
I am sure we would be looking more towards a fully automated solution. No ?

Depending on where you are located, country, region, etc, you may have options should
you wish to have it professionally restored or repaired to function properly again...
Even an Apple Store with Genius bar could, in several locations, give the product a look
and perhaps be able to diagnose the underlying issues. However that varies with the
degree of failed components and what is really wrong with it. A battery and a new HDD
could be all that's wrong with it. A diagnostic is often free, even on out-of-warranty Mac
at the Apple Store genius bar; an appointment is advised.
However if you only wanted someone to extract the hard disk drive and attach it to
a 'universal USB drive adapter kit' so at to try and access any readable files on it,
that is something that could be done at an Apple Authorized service provider; as
some of them may even have a section of resale products such as this adapter kit.
An example of this kind of kit includes wires, adapter parts, & a separate power supply
so it can be used to run the hard drive's electronics. This is not intended for permanent
use, but works like a set of patch cables to access the bare drive without an enclosure.

I have a large excel file that has 700,000 records in it. The excel file has a few columns that change every day.
What is the best way to read the data form the excel file in fastest and most efficient way.
2 nd Problem,
I have one excel file that has many rows each row contain some data that has certain keywords.
What I want is to segregate the data of rows into respective sheets(tabs ) in the workbook.
for example in rows have following data
1. Alfa

3 gama

6gama
7alfa
in excel
I want there to be 3 tabs now with each of the key words alfa beta and gamma.

I don't really see any better options for SharePoint. SharePoint use other production called 'Office Web App' to allow users to view/edit Microsoft Office documents (word, excel etc.). But the web version of excel doesn't support that much records as well
as there's size limitations (probably the default max size is 10MB).
Regarding second problem, I think you need some custom solutions (like a SharePoint timer job/webpart ) to read and present data.
However, if you can reduce the excel file records to something near 16k (which is supported rows in web version of excel) then you can use SharePoint Excel service to refresh data automatically in the excel file in SharePoint from some external sources.

What is the best way to import and edit a large amount of footage?

Hello Apple world,
As a newbie to Final Cut 10 I have a question regarding best ways to import footage. I'll give you a quick run down.
I have a 150 gig of gopro footage that I just hit 'import' to recently (from my external HD), it took around 10 hours to process it all.
Its all under one event, but then somewhat organised into dates etc. But it is very slow. I imported it all at once because it was all footage from the last 6 months of my Whistler/states/fiji trip and want to make a movie out of it, using clips from all over the time, not just in chronological order.
I have the latest mac book pro, 4 gig ram,2.4 GHz i7, 750 hard drive, with nothing else on the computer.
Ive read about creating proxy media, after ive imported, but am still somewhat confused as to the benefit. Does it create duplicates? that will fill up my pretty large HD as it is!
Can you suggest any ways that might make my laptop run a bit faster? Should i delete and work directly from external HD etc etc?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Now I am ready to start editing and have been using premiere lately, but I have yet to figure out the proper pipeline. I want to know the best way to retain resolution before I delve into this project.
My questions:
1) What is the best way to start a new project and import the footage without having to render whilst editing, so as to retain all resolution and originality of the source footage?
2) What is the best way/ codec/ format to export this same footage once editing is complete so as to retain that crisp 1080p for which the 5D is so recognized?
3) What is the best way/ codec/ format to import and export/ render between premiere and after effects? I am speaking mostly of vfx and color correction. I also have some 30fps footage that I intend to slow down in AE and then import into premiere.

Hi,
We have 3 devices,
1) Our Primary Network Router (which creates our office Network and has DHCP enabled).
2) We have and Airport Extreme, which is used to create our Wireless Network (THIS IS SET TO “Create Wireless Network”), it has DHCP Enabled, its DHCP IP Scheme is set to 192.168.2.x, where the IP Scheme of our Primary Network is set to 192.168.181.x.
3) We have an Airport Express that we are trying to use to EXTEND our Wireless Network.
The most important thing we are trying to accomplish is to isolate the Wireless Network from our Primary Network, so Wireless Clients can access the Internet, but CAN’T SEE or ACCESS the Shared Network Volumes AVAILABLE ON THE PRIMARY NETWORK.
At the moment, the Wireless Clients can access the Internet and receive an IP in the range of 192.168.2.x from the DHCP Server in the Airport Extreme. That part of it is working, but the Wireless Clients can unfortunately still SEE and ACCESS the Network Volumes available on the Primary Network. WHICH IS NOT WHAT WE WANT!!

There is no way to do this. Any of the wireless clients of the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) can see any device connected to the AEBS's WAN port. Clients of a subnet can see anything on the supernet.
You could configure you network like this:
Internet-> (WAN) AEBS (LAN) -> Primary router
As long as the Primary router was providing DHCP/NAT the things on the LAN side of the Primary router would be hidden from the AEBS clients.
A better solution may be to have 2 completely separate networks OR invest in some type of network security firewall device to actively isolate your Primary network.
Question 2: What is the best way to use the Airport Express to “EXTEND” the Airport Extreme’s Wireless Network? I have tried WDS “Main” for Extreme and WDS “Remote” for Express, but all that doesn’t allow you to use the Extreme to Create a Separate Network, it uses the DHCP Server built into the Primary Network’s Router. WDS is 802.11g's method of wirelessly extending a network.
"Extend wireless network" is 802.11n's method of wirelessly extending a network.
Neither of them require the AirPort Express (AX) to be cabled to the AEBS.
