What is the best way to install two versions of Mac OS?

I am needing to install Tiger alongside Leopard on my computer. I have heard that if I install Tiger on the same HD as Leopard I will have to partition the HD. That would be an enormous pain since I would have to first erase my HD. Would it be ok to just install Tiger on a USB drive? I am only going to use a small amount of space since I will only need to install the OS and a few images files.

Hello, yes, you need either 2 different Partitiopns, or two different drives, but PPC makes don't boot OSX from USB drives as a rule, only Firewire drives.
The small amount of space isn't really true, OSX needs lots of Free Space for it's own use, less so with 10.4 than 10.5 though/
You can install another SATA 1.5 Gb/s compatible drive inside your G5 though quite easily...

  • What is the best way to install new version... adobe always leaves stuff behind from the old version

    Hi,
I've gone through the installation of a new version, well... 8 times before. And have noticed that adobe has the nasty habit of not cleanly uninstalling the previous versions...
What is the best way to do this?
Should I do a regular install and trust adobe this time to completely remove the old version and its associated directories?
Or should I uninstall the old version and install the new one? I've always been afraid to go this route bocause of the organizer files.
    Thanks for your comments.

So, just to be clear:  the "proper, Adobe-recommended" way to go about an upgrade would be to install the new version and THEN remove the older version by means off "Add/Remove programs"  ??
Thanks to all for your help.

  • HT1364 I just bought a new PC and now have ample space on my C drive to house my music Library which is currenlty installed on a external drive.  What is the best way to install and move the itunes library to my C Drive?

I just bought a new PC and now have ample space on my C drive to house my music Library which is currenlty installed on a external drive.  What is the best way to install and move the itunes library to my C Drive?

If the entire library is on the external drive then simply copy the iTunes folder into <User's Music> on the new computer, then install iTunes. If you've already installed iTunes you will want to remove the empty iTunes folder in <User's Music> first.
If it turns out you only have the media folder on the external drive then take a look at this post...

  • What is the best way to install an Airport to a G5?

Hi. My G5 came without a built in Airport card. I've recently bought an Airport Extreme. What is the best way to install an Airport to a G5? Should I buy the Airport card from ebay or some other retailer & do the installation myself OR should I buy it & get somebody professional to install it?

Hello ajdoyle78. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The April 2005 and earlier Power Mac G5s are compatible with the AirPort Extreme card. The later Power Mac G5s (models: M9590LL/A, M9591LL/A, M9592LL/A) are not. Instead, these models require a special combo AirPort/Bluetooth card which must be installed by an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP).

  • What is the best way to install qmail?

I'm about to rebuild my server and want qmail on it. What is the best way to install it?
In the past I've used http://qmailrocks.com/ but I've also looked at  http://lifewithqmail.com/.
The problem I found with qmailrocks was that because it doesn't come from packages I have to remember to keep it up-to-date and I rarely remember.
There is the package in AUR, can anyone comment on the stability of it and how easy it is to get running after it has been installed?

and in boundaries i create boundaries but not for all branch and enable (boundary group for site assignment ) for every group
What is the best way to install client for all computer
    thank u

You basically have 3 options, if you disregard a manual install.
    1. Client Push. Configure an account with local admin rights on the clients, and enable Site-Wide pushing of client.
    2. GPO. Import the GPO templates and enable the client to be installed that way
    3. Startup script.
Of the 3, I usually go with a combination of client push and GPO.
Take a look at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712298.aspx for the complete documentation.

  • What is the best way to install snapdrive to many hosts?

Hi all, Next weekend, I planed to install snapdrive to over 160 hosts. So what is the best way to install snapdrive? Over 160 UCS hots! I found "remote install" in snapmanager for Hyper-v. This is useful for me? Please let me know easy way to install snapdrive to so many hosts. Thank you.

The current generation of SnapDrive does not support remote installing to multiple hosts. What you saw about HyperV is simply limited to the HyperV host, so it's not remote to multiple hosts across the network.Since SnapDrive has a command line to install, you CAN however script the remote installation.I suggest you find out the exact installation command which works for your environment and use a program like psexec to remotely execute the installation command against multiple targeted servers. If you need help with the script, NetApp Professional Service can be engaged and can even come on site and do it for you, if needed. hope that helps,Domenico

  • What is the best way to set up my new Mac Pro?

Not wanting to screw up in a process I've not done with a brand new machine before, I'm looking for feedback on my plan for setting my new Mac Pro next week...
    The physical plan is this:
For RAM, I have four 2GB SDRAM's plus the supplied six 1GB modules. My plan here is to install the 2GB rams into the first four slots and install four of the 1GB modules into the remaining four slots for a total of 12GB's.
When the cost for 4GB modules gets down to reasonable, I'll buy four of them and bump the current rams down the line which will then give me a total of 24 gigs where I'll stay.
For my hard drives, I'm installing a 160GB Intel X25-M into the first drive bay
    http://www.intel.com/design/flash/nand/mainstream/index.htm
using one of MaxUpgrades' 'MaxConnects' kits. I will use this drive for the operating system software and my applications and their libraries.
Next, into the remaining three drive bays, I am installing three 300GB WD Velociraptors. Mine are the pre-'backplane ready' versions:
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=459
so I have bought these sleds for them...
    http://www.maxupgrades.com/istore/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_i d=180
I own one of Sonnet's Tempo SATA E4P cards
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposatae4p.html
which, thanks to this forum, I now understand, with the correct firmware installed, function well so I will install it and be able to establish hardware RAID. I will create a RAID 0 set with the three Velociraptors and use it to store all of my data files.
Backup will happen on a 1TB WD 'Caviar Black' external drive connected through one of the Sonnet card's external eSATA ports and using the OS 'Time Machine' software.
And that's the physical plan. My question is about setting things up. The physical installation part is straight forward and I don't expect any difficulties but I'm wondering what is the best way to install the operating system.
Do I take a first step keeping the supplied hard drive installed, install the solid state drive into the next drive bay and then transfer the contents from the supplied drive onto the SSD or do I do the complete physical installation process and do a 'C' drive start up and install the OS that way?
And, do you have any tips/suggestions on setting up the RAID 0 set?
thanks for the help. I want to do this right.
    JQ

oh mighty Hatter, I knew you'd have helpful guidance to offer! And thank you. You've confirmed my anxieties about the Sonnet card; kind of a 'too much, too quickly' sort of thing. And it's not that Sonnet's not a good company. Just everything to do with new technologies and the growth curve we all, manufacturers and users, go through when they come out. And, for sure, the new Mac Pro's are new technology; the single biggest forward leap in Apple's top-of-the-line machines for some time far as I can tell. Just reading at Intel's website about the Nehalem's is a joy!
So, I will proceed now with everything except for the controller card, leaving that 'til later. In the meantime, I think I'll just happily run with the four hard drives all running independently. No software RAID. I know just those, the SSD boot drive plus Velociraptor trio's going inside of a 2.66ghz 8-core Nehalem Mac Pro is going to be a working pleasure. Heck, this way, I'll get settled in and used to the machine's speed, have a great time doing so and then, in however many months, I can jump into spending another chunk of money on an excellent RAID card, RAID card's dear Barefeats will have tested and reviewed for us, set up my RAID 0 set and head of to those new races watching my computer leap for joy! Could be that, by then, the cost of Intel 160GB X25-M's will have dropped enough that I can afford to go for a second and have a two SSD RAID 0 boot drive... Yummy!
Thanks for the help. Like I say, I knew there was useful guidance hanging on some limb within your personal kit, (otherwise referred to as your mind)!
Interesting to read about the problems people have had with Sonnet's 2.17 update in PPC's... In this computer, my PowerMac G5 dual 2.7ghz, I have a Sonnet 'Tempo Sata X4P' controller card. I downloaded and installed 2.17 and got the same troubles; no cut, no paste, no 'drag and drop' etc. It was miserable.
Mine, fortunately, magically corrected after running the 'permissions verify and correct' process in Disc Utility and, after a restart, all was back to almost normal but for one exception; the Sonnet card was no longer present or functioning including the four eSATA ports out the back. (I ran Tech Tools Pro 5's repair suites first but, and who knows why, it didn't correct the problem...) This one was absolutely in the 'who knows what the f_'s going on and why it disappeared but did' class.
Oh, the other remnant is that, when the computer goes into sleep, after about five minutes, the fans rev up, and up, and the computer's frozen; only access is to do a forced shutdown pressing and holding the power button, so I've had to adopt a 'shut down whenever leaving it for more than fifteen minutes' approach to this dear friend. Once I've fully moved into and established my new one (which should arrive today, by the way... Yippeee!!! Can't wait!), I'll do a complete restoration on this one including taking out the Sonnet card. Usually, I sell my old Pro's but, this time, I'm going to keep this one as a back up and just general second computer for times I might need it. It has been such a great and dependable machine. Keeping it seems the right thing to do.
thanks Hatter. I'll let you know how things go, including what happens with the SSD. I don't have speed test software so I won't be able to track it's performance like that guy in the post you gave me did...

  • What is the best way to run windows on my mac?

What is the best way to run windows on my mac?
I have a particular program that i need to run, and it only runs on windows. I have a macbook pro

As Templeton noted, it depends and will at least be somewhat subjective.
There are basically three options out there.  You can use a Windows emulator (Wine or the commercial version of it, Crossover Office), use Boot Camp to "dual boot" or use virtualization software (Parallels, VMWare Fusion, or VirtualBox).  Each has its advantages or disadvantages.
The Windows emulators have the advantage of being the one option that doesn't need the purchase of a copy of Windows.  Unlike Boot Camp, but like the virtualization options, this allows you to run Windows programs and OSX programs side by side.  The big problem, though, is that it is the least compatible option--a lot of Windows software either has "issues" or will not function at all.  The Crossover website has information on which programs are known to work and how well they are known to work.
Boot Camp is the option that Apple ships OSX with.  You'll need a copy of Windows to install into the partition.  You'll effectively divide your disk into two parts and have two machines.  The major advantages are, first, you don't need to acquire separate software *AND* the Windows license.  As well, it's the highest performance Windows system.  What you have is truly a Windows machine.  That's both the good and the bad--you aren't going to be able to use OSX software at the same time, and you have to reboot to get back to OSX.  I've always thought it was best for someone who likes the Apple hardware and wants to use it for a Windows box--in that case Boot Camp is clearly a great solution.
Finally there's virtualization which seems to be the most popular way to handle Windows, especially if you need to run one vertical market package.  It has the advantage of allowing you to use your OSX software at the same time, and the virtualization gives an extremely high level of compatibility.  About the only thing that won't run is a virtualization package (and there's not a lot of reason to run that in a Windows VM).  There is a performance hit compared to Boot Camp, but it's minimal for all but the most demanding applications (that being high end games).
It will chew up RAM on the OSX machine, but if you have at least 4 GB of RAM it will probably be manageable, especially if you only need to run one Windows program.
You will need both a virtualization program (there are three major ones) and purchase Windows.  Two of three programs are commercial packages (Parallels and VMWare Fusion), while the other is an open source option (VirtualBox).  Virtual Box has the advantage of being free, but it's by far the least polished of the group.
Which way is best?  As was noted, it depends.  I run VMWare Fusion on my machines, and I have used CrossOver Office for limited purposes.  I've not yet seen, in my use pattern, a reason to go to Boot Camp but I certainly can see cases where it might make sense.

  • What is the best way to run windows on my Mac? And What are the pitfalls I should watch for?

What is the best way to run windows on my Mac?   What are the pitfalls/

If you need Windows as your main operating system you would be better off buying a Real Windows PC.
Running windows on a Mac is always a compromise. Whether in a Boot Camp partition or in a Virtual Machine.
In boot camp you can't easily Re-Partition and or Re-Size the drive it is installed on. You can't use both graphics cards as Apple has limited Windows to use the discrete graphics only, that is if your mac has 2 graphics cards (15" MBPs), which will shorten the battery run time in Windows.
The trackpad only has limited functions in Windows, less then is available on the Mac side and a real Windows PC.

  • How do I import DVD to IMovie? What is the best way to import DVD to a Mac?

    Hi everyone!
I need some help, so here are my questions.
How do I import DVD to IMovie? What is the best way to import DVDs to a Mac?
I would like to keep the original quality from the DVD.
    Thx.

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

I would in fact recommend a universal 2.5" and 3.5" to USB that is readily available online. Shouldn't cost more than $15 USD and you can use it for SATA, IDE, and PATA. And besides, you never know when it will come in handy.
