What is the best way to prevent theft of an imac?

My nephew is beginning college and must live in a dorm.  I am trying to find out the best way to keep his graduation present safe from himself ( he is young and generally trusting ), his roommate ( who I am assuming is also young ), and future friends who may not be so trustworthy...HELP!

The Apple Store > Kensington MicroSaver Lock - Apple Store (U.S.) and others > iMac cable lock - Google Search, sell cable locks that are at least a deterrent if used properly.
Another plus, is that MacBooks and MacBook Pro's are at greater risk than Desktop iMac's.

What's the best way to prevent KDE from using pulseaudio if it is required to be installed for gnome?

KDE system Settings > Mulitmedia  (in Hardware category) > Audio and Video options > Audio Playback
the default device shown there is the pulseaudio device, move it to the bottom of the list
Check all sub entries under Audio Playback to make sure they all have default at the bottom.
This SHOULD make KDE sound subsystem use the real hardware directly through Alsa instead of pulseaudio.

  • What is the "best" way to configure iTunes on an iMac with personal user acounts so each user can access the media library but sync devices on their personal user account?

I am trying to determine the best way to set up our imac so each user account can access the same media (songs, movies etc.) through itunes and also back up and manage their personal devices under their own personal user account.  There are 4 users on our iMac.  Me, my wife, and our 2 children.  We have built an extensive library of music/media together using the same iTunes store account.  I would like to establish a seperate apple id and iTunes store account for each of us going forward but have the ability for each of us to share our purchases.  What is the best way to configure our system and devices in order to allow shared access to media and at the same time allow for individual management of devices including contacts, apps, photos, etc. Please help, I would like to do this once!
    Thank you in advance!

OK, seeing as no-one replied (presumably because a lot of this information is on the forums in bits elsewhere) here's how I've got on so far.
Applications - just went through them.  About the only one I needed was my media server app.  Just downloaded and re-installed, had a quick look back though my email to find the license key and it all went on fine.  Installation never seemed quite right on my old machine so solved that problem too.
Movies - New iMovies just copied across the clips and projects into their respective folders.  Seems to have worked but haven't checked it all that thoroughly.  Some duplicate footage here but I can trim this out at some point when I get a chance to go through here.
Documents - Just copied these across.
Photos - used an app called iPhoto Library Manager.  You can download for free but have to pay to use the part that consolidates your libraries.  Possibly if I was willing to spend a bit more time I could have got away without using this but given I didn't know the state of my different libraries and just how many duplicates I had this was too much of a convenience to ignore.  Also got my library into a state where I can now spend a few hours organising it a bit better with Faces / Events etc.
Not attempted Music or iPhone sync yet as been stuck trying to solve a problem with my power adapter.

What is the best way of connecting a Cambridge Audio DacMagic to the imac without losing sound quality?

    Morning Acousticare,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Thunderbolt cables should not exceed three meters for maximum performance. The Apple Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable (2.0 m) is two meters in length.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:

  • Crazy I know, but what is the best way to PREVENT a report portlet from running ?

I know this sounds a very weird question.
On a page I have a html form (that I use as search criteria for my report) as well as an actual report published as a portlet.
On certain situations, such as when going to the page initially, I require that the report not be executed due to bind variables passed by the form not being initialised.
I know I can set default values for parameters, and use decode statements in my query etc etc, but this means the report is still actually run, but no rows are returned!
I dont want the report to even run!
Is there a faster way of stopping a report from executing.
    ... before displaying the page - pl/sql
Would the best way to achieve this be the throwing of an unhandled exception?
    declare
    myException exception;
    begin
if certain criteria is not met then
    raise myException;
    end;
    regards,
    Matt.

I have about 50GB of photos on my old MBP iphoto library.
To be able to merge your libraries, your Aperture version and iPhoto version must match. For basic reading see: Aperture 3.3: Using a unified photo library with iPhoto and Aperture
and Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries
Assuming you are running the latest Aperture and iPhoto versions:
Before merging libraries ensure that your iPhoto Library has no issues. While still on your old mac run the "library first aid tools" on your iPhoto Library. Hold down the key combination ⌥⌘ and double click your iPhoto Library, then select "Repair database".
Make sure you have a backup of your current Aperture Library and iPhoto library.
Do both macs have a FireWire port? Then you could connect your macs in Target Disk Mode:
See OS X Lion: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode
This way your new mac could see your old mac as an external disk and you could copy directly between the macs.
Otherwise copy your iPhoto library by drag-and-drop to an external disk (on your old mac) and connect that disk to your new mac. Check, if the external drive is formatted for mac (MacOS X Extended (Journaled)). Otherwise reformat it, before you copy the iPhoto library to that drive.
When your iPhoto Library has been moved to your new Mac launch Aperture and use the command "File > Import > Library" from the main menu bar. If there are duplicates in the Aperture library (if you imported earlier from iPhoto) you may be prompted if you want to "Add" or "Merge". If you have lots of duplicates, pick "Merge", otherwise "Add".
Post back, if you need more detailed instructions.
    Good Luck.

  • What is the best way watch video streamed to my iMac on my TV?

    Hi,
I'm trying to figure out the best way to watch video streamed to my iMac on my TV.  Or to watch a dvd inserted in my iMac on my TV.
My iMac has a Thunderbolt port (among other things).
My TV has HDMI inputs as well as a digital optical sound input.
I'd like to know the best way to do this both wired and wirelessly.  (And if it would make sense to use an Apple TV
    Thanks for your help!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
An option is to buy a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and a HDMI adapter, or a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4241
Apart from that, you can get an Apple TV and stream the computer to the Apple TV through AirPlay Mirroring > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404

  • What is the best way to set up one family imac with multiple iphones?

We basically have one imac that we all use (one user account).
We also have our own iphones with our own apple id.
What i would like to get my head around is setting up each iphone individually to use itunes.(i.e music, videos, contacts).
It seems that every time i sync/ update iphone os, via itunes, apps and contacts change. Also today i only just got around to update one of the iphones to ios5. Now all the photos have been deleted???
I would be grateful of any advice, cheers.
    Kev.

Here are three different methods >
How to use multiple iPods, iPads, or iPhones with one computer, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495
This article > iOS: How to transfer or sync content to your computer, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296
    suggests using contacts groups.
When syncing contacts, you can choose to sync all of your contacts or only selected groups.
You can select a group of contacts to which all new contacts created on your iOS device will be added.
You can set up groups in the Address Book application.
If you are all going to use the same iTunes apps library, turn off "Automatically sync new apps" in the apps tab just below the list of apps.  Then you won't get new apps on your device unless you select them.

  • What is the best way to back up aperture on imac and then take the library on the road for my mcp?

I have just aquired a lacie triple interface ext drive 1tb, to vault aperture and then take on the road for mcp to access the aperture iamges, looking at some of this forum I dont think this is as easy as i thought so i thought I'd better get some help!
I have not activated the ext hard drive yet just in case, my imac is backed up with time machine presently.

    Hi Dave
I use a MBP  and a Mac Mini when on the road
It has always been my practice not to use the system drive for my photographic data where ever possible always using external drives eSATA and FW for the MBP and using USB drives for Vaults and Clones
I am working with a growing Libary at the moment 720GB + 500 GB of referenced files on a second HDD
I will be scooting down the A30 with a couple of HDDs and my MBP on my way home and whilst there I will be using the my MBP  to add new images to my aperture Libary and Referenced Drive and work on some of my existing files
For the last four years I have used a Ruggedised 500GB FW/USB drive to store copies of my CF cards when on a shoot you need the MBP to transfer from CF to HDD but once on the HD any future transfer is quick.
Only reusing it when I have the contents in at least two external HDD's at different locations
I have a Mac Pro and Wiebetech 4bay eSATA external at my studio (It takes bare drives)
Two years ago I did move to using an eSATA EspressCard|34 with my MBP (which only has a 200GB internal) which has ineffect given me a  2TB external running as if it's an internal drive (Ruggedised eSATA) as my Aperture Library and PS scratch file drive.
And 2TB USB drives as Vault backup
I have never been a Time Machine fan from the early days when there were problems when running Aperture, I'm sure it's improved but I have my own work flow routine
I use SuperDuper form Shirt Pocket
I recently purchased a couple of 2TB WD Green 2TB SATA 6Gbps 64MB Cache Power Saving Internal Hard Drives
for £60 each and two empty Lacie cases for £18 each from Amazon so storage has never been cheaper I normally use bare drives but the cases are better when I am away from base and its easy to remove them
    Hope this helps
    Phil G
PS. If you're down Penwith over the next month look me up and I show you the set up

  • What is the best way to secure my iPad from ID theft

What is the best way to secure iPad purchases from the app store?

Technically, they will import off your flash drive....if it's one of the models that work (maybe 50% do) and if they meet the very rigid naming convention that the iPad insists on.
It's far easier to use a computer then either sync them on via iTunes, e-mail them to yourself or upload them to something like dropox, then download them onto your device.

  • What is the best way to protect it?

I HATE getting scratches or any sort of cosmetical damage on my devices, I am getting my first MBP on Friday, and want to know what the best way to keep it like new is?
It won't be leaving the house regularly for a while, but I do have a neoprene case which I think it will fit for travelling anyway.
I have seen many people with cases on their Macs, I don't know what the proper name is for them, but they are like hard shells attached to the back of the lid, are these recommended? I have read about some heat issues with it.
What is the best way to protect the screen? I don't ever touch it, so I don't think that will be a problem, but cleaning dust off etc.?
Lastly, will the trackpad wear away? My laptop's trackpad has slightly faded from it being used a lot, are MBP's prone to this too? I will try to use a mouse as much as possible.
Are there any other things I should know about? I read that the bottom can get scratched easily too? I would only use it on a flat surface, so something like my lap, so depending on how soft the metal is... It can't be that bad can it?
    Thanks!

    Wouldnt buy that, nope
Hard cases protect the finish of your macbook, but they trap in heat, ....many here have spoken on same.
A major part of a macbook pro, especially a RETINA PRO is dissipating heat from the alloy case, which this case prevents from happening.
Yes, youre stopping all the scratch,.....and likewise keeping the Macbook from dissipating a lot of heat.
When I said INCASE, I meant this:

  • What's the best way to back up laptop?

    Hi all,
This is probably a dumb question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. What's the best way to back up a laptop: hooking up a hard drive manually, or via WiFi?
In the past, I've just hooked up a hard drive to my MacBook Pro, and manually synced it with Time Machine. But, of course, sometimes I'm busy and I don't get around to doing that as faithfully as I should. So, I'm thinking of hooking up a hard drive to my AirPort so that my laptop will automatically sync over WiFi whenever I'm home.
Before I do that, however, two questions:
    1) Is that easier to do than the way I'm currently backing up? Or are there problems with that route that I'm not foreseeing right now? How do you all back up your laptops?
    2) I also have a Mac Pro on my network at home. Will I have a problem with my Mac Pro seeing the WiFi "Time Machine" hard drive and wanting to back up to it, rather than the Time Machine hard drive I already have physically hooked up to it?
    Thanks for your advice!

learn about backups VS. archives, and data protection:
Methodology to protect your data. Backups vs. Archives. Long-term data protection
    excerpt:
Four words: "compartmentalized autonomous redundancy of data" or C.A.R.D. What this means regarding your data is “centralize it, isolate it, and multiply it”. This easy acronym to remember about how to approach your data is a great first approach to keep in mind.
Compartmentalized: separating out your data from your system files, centralizing all static and active files into a location or two to make backups, and archived data easier to update and locate. Centralizing your data collection is the primary hazard to overcome for what usually is the case of data that is scattered everywhere throughout your internal hard drive.
Autonomous: Isolation of data from changes, theft, decentralizing data to safes, fire boxes, offsite and online locations. Importantly ‘freezing’ data onto independent storage media for protection and from alterations, such as DVDs, hard drives, and online encrypted files, or .DMG created files of static data collections.
Redundancy: making copies of all autonomous isolated data such that data is decentralized not only in place and in media storage type (DVD, HD, online) for safety and protection as a failsafe, but each aspect of that failsafe has at the very least two redundant copies.
Data: all files made, saved, created, modified or working on. Important pictures, documents, videos, PDF, financial, personal. Any data large or small which you would not dare lose, which is private, important, hard or impossible to recreate, or most importantly, would take tremendous time to regenerate. Essentially anything important to you, your company, your loved ones (will, medical records, financial information, etc.), friends or otherwise.

  • What is the best way of returning group-by sql results in Toplink?

I have many-to-many relationship between Employee and Project; so,
a Employee can have many Projects, and a Project can be owned by many Employees.
I have three tables in the database:
    Employee(id int, name varchar(32)),
    Project(id int, name varchar(32)), and
Employee_Project(employee_id int, project_id int), which is the join-table between Employee and Project.
Now, I want to find out for each employee, how many projects does the employee has.
The sql query that achieves what I want would look like this:
    select e.id, count(*) as numProjects
    from employee e, employee_project ep
    where e.id = ep.employee_id
    group by e.id
Just for information, currently I am using a named ReadAllQuery and I write my own sql in
the Workbench rather than using the ExpressionBuilder.
Now, my two questions are :
    1. Since there is a "group by e.id" on the query, only e.id can appear in the select clause.
This prevent me from returning the full Employee pojo using ReadAllQuery.
I can change the query to a nested query like this
    select e.eid, e.name, emp.cnt as numProjects
    from employee e,
    (select e_inner.id, count(*) as cnt
    from employee e_inner, employee_project ep_inner
    where e_inner.id = ep_inner.employee_id
    group by e_inner.id) emp
    where e.id = emp.id
but, I don't like the complication of having extra join because of the nested query. Is there a
better way of doing something like this?
    2. The second question is what is the best way of returning the count(*) or the numProjects.
What I did right now is that I have a ReadAllQuery that returns a List<Employee>; then for
each returned Employee pojo, I call a method getNumProjects() to get the count(*) information.
I had an extra column "numProjects" in the Employee table and in the Employee descriptor, and
I set this attribute to be "ReadOnly" on the Workbench; (the value for this dummy "numProjects"
column in the database is always 0). So far this works ok. However, since the numProjects is
transient, I need to set the query to refreshIdentityMapResult() or otherwise the Employee object
in the cache could contain stale numProjects information. What I worry is that refreshIdentityMapResult()
will cause the query to always hit the database and beat the purpose of having a cache. Also, if
there are multiple concurrent queries to the database, I worry that there will be a race condition
of updating this transient "numProjects" attribute. What are the better way of returning this kind
of transient information such as count(*)? Can I have the query to return something like a tuple
containing the Employee pojo and an int for the count(*), rather than just a Employee pojo with the
transient int inside the pojo? Please advise.
    I greatly appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Frans

No I don't want to modify the set of attributes after TopLink returns it to me. But I don't
    quite understand why this matters?
I understand that I can use ReportQuery to return all the Employee's attributes plus the int count(*)
and then I can iterate through the list of ReportQueryResult to construct the Employee pojo myself.
I was hesitant of doing this because I think there will be a performance cost of not being able to
use lazy fetching. For example, in the case of large result sets and the client only needs a few of them,
if we use the above aproach, we need to iterate through all of them and wastefully create all the Employee
pojos. On the other hand, if we let Toplink directly return a list of Employee pojo, then we can tell
Toplink to use ScrollableCursor and to fetch only the first several rows. Please advise.
    Thanks.

  • What is the best way to manage photos - Dropbox (with sync), Facebook (with sync), iPhoto, etc.?

With so many cloud based and wireless syncing services, I'm lost as to the simplest way to keep photos sync'd as well as backed up. My dropbox is currently syncing all photos I take with my iphone, but in an overall folder called CAMERA UPLOADS, so they are uncategorized. I upload pics to facebook, which facebook also has a sync photos feature, but I don't necessarily want all photos uploaded to facebook. What has worked best for everyone so that there aren't a ton of dupicate photos everywhere, and multiple syncs of the same photos?
Also, what is the best way to manage my iPhone photos generally? I'm never sure if I delete a photo from my phone, does it delete it on my computer via iCloud? Sometimes I just take a picture to send to a friend that I don't need to keep, while others are ones I want to sync to my computer. Can I control when deleting that it be deleted everywhere or just on the device? And alternately, can I choose certain photos not to sync via iCloud?
iCloud makes me nervous. Once when I wanted to place all photos of my pup into a folder, I selected the photos on my iPhone and accidentally clicked delete instead of move. No big deal, I figured they'd be at home sync'd on the cloud. But since I'd deleted them on my phone, the cloud deleted them on my home computer too and the photos were lost.

I am presuming that we cannot share downloaded apps and music between accounts because of the copyright issue,
Though I'm no copyright lawyer, as long as it's within a household, you can share content among users. Such sharing is, absent specific language preventing it not present in the iTunes Store terms of use, generally considered to be "personal use". So you can share apps and music amongst your users on your computer and with their devices. You just can't give any of that content to friends or relatives who don't live with you.
What I am not clear on, it making sure that this appears in each itunes account - is it easy to find the file storage folders that match the itunes accounts and what would these be?
The iTunes library and files are by default in a user's Home/Music folder. But you don't have to find the folder; in fact putting a file into the folder yourself won't add the file to iTunes. Just drag the file into the iTunes window. iTunes will copy it to the correct location.

  • What is the best way to organize queue in R/3?

    Hi,
I'm in a middle of a project, where I should implement queue in order to sync data between 2 systems - r/3 and legasy one. I have few user exits (or bussiness events), which could be rised concurently in time, and I need only 1 instance of the sync module to run at a time. Well, I know the technique to prevent a program from running in multiple processes, and I have an idea how to organize a queue (my idea is to use transparent table to track actions which should be sync-ed), but there allways are some 'bottlenecks' that should be considered in such an implementation.
That's why it might be of great help if someone could share his/her knowledge on this topic or point me to the right paper/docu, if available.
I just don't want to reinvent the wheel, if possible
    Many thanks in advance.

I'm not sure why you don't just invent a generic data structure (e.g., table name, list of column names and aliases of column names) such as:
    class QueryMetaData {
      private final String tableName;
      private final String[] columnNames;
      private final String[] columnAliases;
}Read into the above structure from a properties file, database table, etc. You can store meta-data itself in places other than enum constants, particularly if would like to change the meta-data without requiring a new build of your application.
That having been said, WRT to your specific questions:
    (1) Finally, from your experience, what is the best way to organize all that stuff?See above
    (2) I have heard that smart Java programmer should avoid using the enums by any means. Do you agree?Enums are better than simple constants using int or String or something similar. If there are known, discrete values unlikely to change frequently, I see no issues with an enum. They improve the readability of code, and there are enough syntactic sugar features in the language (switch statements come to mind) to make them appealing.
    (3) Generally what will you prefer when creating a constant which has two values: two final Integers or enum?
See above. Enums were introduced (in large part) to do away with storing constants as integers.
