What is the best way to restore system settings on restart?

Under Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Notification Area Icons there is a checkbox for
Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar.
I think Group Policy is re-setting this to on every time I reboot. I'd like it to be off.
I talked with the administrators about it - it's not that there is some mandate that it be set to on - they just like it that way and don't want to change it.
I on the other hand don't need to see all of the crapware that has been installed cluttering up my start menu.
I have a reg file that updates this setting and I'm thinking of using a PowerShell script to set a few things the way I like them on startup.
Is PowerShell the right tool for this task - or is there a better way to enforce local-user preferences after the group policy bull has had it's run of the china shop?
Would the best approach be to run the reg file with PowerShell - or is there a way to control this feature from PowerShell directly?

  • What is the best way to restore the entire contents of Mac HD?

After installing Snow Leopard my iMovie 6 project went haywire. As I found that others had the same problem, I backed up Mac HD with TM, and then re-installed Leopard using the erase procedure. After that I couldn't access my TM backups via TM, so I copied it to the Mac HD folder. This didn't work out too well, as I had to manually restore various applications and libraries. I then found out you can access the backups via TM by pressing Control, click. So I deleted almost all the files I copied and I'm ready to re-install the entire folder Mac HD via TM. Now it asks me for a folder's name or to create a new folder. I can restore it to the existing Mac HD folder, as a separate folder within it, but then it will be like the previous attempt I made to copy it. What is the best way to do it? Should I create a new Mac HD folder and try to delete the one that came with Leopard? Can it be done like that? Any help will be appreciated.

I posted my question prematurely. I should have read the manual first. I did contact Apple Support, and they walked me through the restore process - it's so simple if you know what you are doing that it is embarrassing. I just didn't know where the Utilities section was - it was right there in the top bar. So now I have my computer the way I like it. I guess Snow Leopard is not for me until they fix iMovie 6.

  • What is the best way to restore my macbook pro?

Here is what happened - I purchased a macbook pro with Snow Leopard, and subsequently upgraded to Lion when it was released. Likewise, I first downloaded Xcode 3, and installed Xcode 4 when it came out. But Xcode 4 crashes all the time. Now days it won't even let me restore snapshots without crashing.
I imagine that if I restore my Mac to a clean state, and install only Xcode 4, that everything will work fine.
But I have so much other software installed too! I don't wan't to use Time Machine or Migration assistant as that would migrate everything. And I don't want Xcode 3, or anything left over from snow leopard.
What is the quickest way I can restore my mac to a clean state, and only migrate the software that I want to?
I also want to transfer all my bookmarks, documents, and cookies (as I don't remember some passwords).

Sorry, but that's kind of a contradiction in terms.
Some "simple" apps (that were just dropped in Applications) can be restored individually, but "complex" apps (the ones that come with their own installers) can't.  Those apps put other files in other places and/or install "helper" apps -- if you don't find and restore all of them, too, the app won't work properly, if at all.  That's why Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant don't allow selection of individual apps -- it's all or none.
What sort of backups do you have?  If you have Time Machine backups, you can do a full system restore of the entire contents of your Mac from any backup you select.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14.
If you do that with a backup from before you installed Xcode3, you can then restore any individual files or folders you need from more recent backups, per #15 in the FAQ.
Any apps installed after the backup you restore will have to be restored individually, or reinstalled from the original discs.

  • What is the best way to restore very recently deleted partition ?, What is the best way to restore very recently deleted partition ?

Can anyone please advise the best course of action here:
I time machined what I thought to be my Mac Pro 1,1 but actually backed up my Macbook Pro 3,1
I was having problems with main hdd and repair was not working so i deleted partition... and when i ran time machine realised i had not backed up from march.
Is there anyway to revert to that partitioning or restore it? Any programs?
Or do I just have to recover the lost files ?

If the lost data is of high value to you, consider sending the drive to a professional recovery service such as DriveSavers. Otherwise, there's little hope, but some have had at least partial success with a product called "Data Rescue."

  • Just archived & installed to fix OSX, now what's the best way to restore?

So recently my OSX stopped working for reasons unknown to me, but an archive and install saved my life, thank god.
However, now I have this folder with all my previous files and applications, I'm wondering if there's an easy way to restore my computer with the Previous Files folder, or if I have to just go through it and find what I need, and paste into applications folder/etc.
I'm also curious if it's safe to do that, since the reason of OSX not working is unknown.
    Thanks!

  • What is the best way to restore Safari?

Sometimes when re-opening Safari, for example:
       * Some tabs just display the Top Sites page.
       * Some others have the correct tab title, but show an empty page. And reloading the page does nothing.
And restoring not only the LastSession.plist, but also all its peers, from Time Machine does not seem to fix the issue.
This being Apple, there must be an easy and systematic way to restore Safari to its exact pre-quit (or pre-crash) state?

  • HT1281 What is the best way to restore a Time Capsule from an Archive disk?

I've done an archive of my Time Capsule and am going to store it off-site with my parents. What I'd like to know is, if my Time Capsule disk gets corrupt or needs reformatting, how can I restore its data from the Archive disk? Can I simply copy its files back onto the Time Capsule disk manually? And if so, will Time Machine recognise the sparseimages?

I think you would just keep archive as that.. if the TC was wiped then it is able start TM backup anew.. that is better and quicker than restoring a TC backup from the archive and then using TM to update it.. that would take forever. But yes, you should be able to connect the usb drive to a computer and copy the sparse bundle to the TC..

  • What is the best way to restore my itunes library, etc.?

My imac started to meltdown last week to the point I couldn't get it to boot. After many tries, I finally was able to access my HD using diskwarrior. Even target mode wouldn't work!
The good news is that I was able to copy my libraries, etc onto my external drive and I have all my music, podcasts, etc.
Bad news is that I had to completely scrub my imac and do a complete reinstall. Now that I have a fresh install of itunes, how can I get it back to the way it was before the meltdown?
When I attache my iphone, itunes wants to wipe out the iphone and sync with the info in itunes, which there is none! The data and setup on the iphone is current and itunes is not. So, in line with my rebuild of itunes, can I trick this new install of itunes into thinking it is my old itunes?
    Thanks!

  • After updating my ipad, it won't come back on, it has the itunes plug in on screen, what is the best way to restore everything that was on my ipad?

after doing an apple update, my ipad will not respond, all i get is the itunes plug in.  I want to make sure to restore everthing that was on my ipad?

The iTunes and plug icons are telling you that the iPad is in recovery mode. Connect the iPad to the computer you normally sync with and restore the iPad. You can use your most recent backup to restore your content. If you haven't backed up your iPad then your content is lost.

  • What's the best way to restore iTunes  library?

We have had to completely restore our PC and in the process had my iTunes library wiped out. I have a backup but its almost a year old. Is it not possible to restore the library from my iPhone (that's the impression based on other discussions I've read)?
How can I make sure that the phone isn't wiped clean when I connect it to the PC?

If using Windows, look for something called SharePod to get the music off of your phone and onto your computer.

  • What is the best way to back-up HDD in order to full system restore?

I want to format my HDD to start out fresh. I already have a Carbon copy clone of my HDD and a time machine back-up. I do not have the OS X installation disks. I just want to know the best way to restore my system after deleting all currecnt partitions on my HDD.

After formatting your hard drive, you will be able to start from your cloned drive without any problem. Apart from that, you should know that Internet Recovery is stored in the firmware of the computer, so it doesn't mind if you replace the hard drive, because you will still be able to use Internet Recovery.
Since the OS X Lion launch, Apple has stopped including DVDs with Macs because now you can gets OS X from Internete Recovery and Recovery HD. As you are running OS X Lion, it's easy to create a USB drive with the OS X Lion installer. Just open App Store > Purchases, and download OS X Lion. When the download finishes, close the installer and use Lion Diskmaker to make a bootable USB drive with the installer > http://liondiskmaker.com
