What is the best way to Sample Vocals from iTunes using Logic?

I would like to add a couple 1 to 5 second vocal lines from an Itunes song to a Logic project on which I am working. I cannot figure out the easiest/ cleanest way to do this. Any ideas? Much thanks.

If you use Melodyne (with the new DNA feature) you can simply open Melodyne as a standalone app, drag the song into Melodyne and you can selectively start removing instrumentation to leave only the vocals.
It is an amazing app. I used it to mess up the chords in Day Tripper and played it back for some folks and told them it was a "bootleg" recording. You can have a lot of fun with Melodyne beyond the usual Logic plug functionality (time/pitch correction).

  • What is the best way to import pictures from Lightroom 5 into FCP X

What is the  best way to transfer pictures from Lightroom 5 into Final Cut Pro X?

There is no one best way.  If, for instance, you want to be able to zoom into the picture with a Ken Burns effect then you may want to save out a very high res version that will be larger than your video resolution. Just use Lightroom to export a jpg file wherever you want it. You could export it into the Events folder and then choose not to copy it when you import it within FCPx. You could import the picture into iPhoto and then access it directly from within FCPx. Those are two simple, "regular" ways to get it into FCPx but if you are not going to Ken Burns the image by zooming into it and such you will want to crop it in Lightroom to the same size you will be using ie if you are making 720HD video then crop the image to that size and proportion before you export it from Lightroom.

What's the best way to transfer everything from my 5-year-old iMac to my 1-year-old iMac?
I'm doing role reversal with these two.  The newer imac is becoming our business computer, the older one will be our personal computer from now on until it gives out.  For the record, I have Carbonite on the business unit.  Should be a no-brainer, right?  (Which is precisely why I'm asking!)
Thanks for whatever timely and accurate advise you may have.

Thanks. I stumbled across migration assistant later that afternoon in a google search. Just finished using it today to do the deed. Appreciate your quick response!

If you know how to set up a computer-to-computer Ethernet network, then you can give that a try, but a hard drive will be faster than Ethernet unless you don't have a lot to transfer.

Do not use "mini" DVD's in any slot loading DVD drive.
Buy a cheap "tray loading" external DVD drive and attach it to your Mac.

What are the best ways to share photos from iPhoto?

If you use Adobe Photoshop, or even Adobe Photoshop Elements, stay as far away from iPhoto as possible.
iPhoto does not play nice with Adobe software or with software from any other third party developer.
iPhoto will hide your image files in a library paradigm where you have no access to them other than through iPhoto.

What is the best way to transfer iPhoto from MacBook Pro to iMac?

the only way is Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

What is the best way to transfer photos from old Macbook Pro to new Macbook Pro?

If you only need to transfer photos, connect the two Macs to the same network. Enable file sharing on both, and copy the iPhoto folder from your old Mac to the new one. Put it in your Pictures folder. This assumes you have no photos on your new MacBook Pro you wish to keep. If you do then let me know.
The first time you launch the new version of iPhoto with a Library created by an older version, it will most likely want to "upgrade your iPhoto Library". This is normal.

What's the best way to prevent KDE from using pulseaudio if it is required to be installed for gnome?

KDE system Settings > Mulitmedia  (in Hardware category) > Audio and Video options > Audio Playback
the default device shown there is the pulseaudio device, move it to the bottom of the list
Check all sub entries under Audio Playback to make sure they all have default at the bottom.
This SHOULD make KDE sound subsystem use the real hardware directly through Alsa instead of pulseaudio.

  • What's the best way to sample multiple AI's with different sampling rates under one task?

    I'm using a PCI-6221 card and CVI 7.1.
I have a tri-axis vibration sensor and two other pressure transducers.
I want to take 10k samples from each vibration axis at 80 kHz. This is
possible by configuring the scan rate of the "vibration task" to 240
kHz. (The card maximum is 250 kHz).
I want to take 1k samples from each pressure transducer at 250 kHz. This happens very infrequently.
Each measurement is required by a separate task.
I thought I could do this by setting up three finite tasks (1
vibration, 2 pressure), but DAQmx won't let me run more than one AI
task at a time. I've read other posts here, and I realize I have to
    add/remove physical channels on-demand.
What is the best way to optimize this setup so that I'm not hogging up system resources?
    Should I do the following?
    1. Stop the task
    2. Remove the vibration channels from the task
    3. Add in a pressure channel
    4. Configure the pressure channel
    5. Start the task
    6. Take the pressure samples
    7. Stop the task
    8. Remove the pressure channel from the task
    9. Add in the vibration channels
    10. Configure the vibration channels
    11. Start the task
Also, the vibration portion is running in finite mode, but I'm looping
it. Should I switch it to continuous and run the "DAQmxReadAnalogF64"
to sample the latest 10k samples. (If the task is continuous, would I
pull the latest 10k samples, or would I pull some old buffered samples
    instead?)
    Thank you,
    Nobody

    Hello Nobody,
If you configure your task timing to acquire a finite number of
samples, then you can only read the number of samples that you
specified in your configuration.  Once you try to read more
samples, you will receive the error you are seeing.
If you configure your task timing for continuous acquisition,k then you
can read samples indefinitely.  Any given DAQmx Read will read the
oldest unread samples in the buffer.
If you are going to be switching between different tasks, you will definitely need to stop one before you start the other one.
    I hope this helps!

  • What's the best way to set up new imac for logic etc?

    In brief:
Getting new imac (27", 3.4 i7, 8-16GB ram, 1TB HD). Will be using it mainly to run Logic Studio (loads of plugins) and Final Cut Express. I also have 2 external Hard drives one 500G one 1TB.
The last imac I bought was my first and just went ahead and threw everything at it not really knowing where things should go. This time I want to set things up correctly.
Basically, with what I've got, what is the best way to set things up. I.e where do I put logic files, samples, BFD2, Amplitube etc. Where do I put videos for use in FCE. Storing projects and backups for use with Time Machine.
Also noticed the new imac will only have 1 firewire port. I will need to plug in the Hard drives (daisy chained), camera and RME Fireface 800. Was thinking of getting a Thunderbolt Hard drive but they are expensive and hard to find.
Would really appreciate any help before I get the new machine and start messing things up again.
    Thanks.

Adding to babowa, enable the system firewall in System Preferences>Security>Firewall tab. Click Advanced and check Stealth Mode.
Lion is a pretty steady and secure operating system, and as there really aren't MANY Mac viruses, there ARE viruses out there still. OS X is pretty good about letting you know if you do accidently download a virus, and it will help you throw it away if it detects one, such as the MACDefender virus. OS X has built in security features such as sandboxing that doesn't allow viruses in as easily as a Windows PC. As for hackers, as long as you have the firewall enabled and a secure password (for your computer and email accounts), then you should be fine.
It's the user that lets the virus in, not the computer (unless there's some untold serious vulnerability in OS X, which is highly unlikely). Keep your apps up to date, don't download pirated software, and be street smart on the internet. Don't download things or visit websites that you don't think are real. Safari includes a Phishing feature that automatically detects known phishing sites, protecting you from that big problem. Keep your passwords secure and you should be fine.
There are antivirus solutions out there, one notable one available in the AppStore is Intego's VirusBarrier (free and plus versions), if you feel you still need one.
I wouldn't worry about it. Windows users who switch to Mac are always asking these questions.

  • What is the best way to retrive data from a Global Variable?

Here is what I want to do,
I have several PC's that run different types of tests. I want to use a global variable, running on a single PC, that acts like a sever that can be accessed by the other PC's in my lab. This Global variable will store the hostnames of the different PC's that are currently running each test, along with a description of the test.  Then, a user can access this Global variable to read the different values and select the PC and connect to it's desktop using Remote Desktop in Windows.
Is it possible to write data to the Global variable that is running on the single PC?
What is the best way to do this? Does anyone have a sample VI?
What is the best way to then read the data from the Global variable?
(I will probably use an array\cluster to store the hostnames.)

    Another pre-LV8 idea...
A functional global can be accessed using VI-Server and called using "call by reference".
This approach harnesses the TCP functionality built into the VI-Server to manage the conncetion.
This can be pretty quick and (if the functional global is written correctly) will support buffered- mixed data types. (Try to do that with the Shared Variable  ).
    Just another idea,

  • What is the best way to set up Facetime if using multiple computers with one apple ID?

I currently have FaceTime setup on my iPad 2 using my normal appleID, but have just recently upgraded our iMac from Leopard to Snow leopard, and have added FaceTime to that computer as well. So my question is this. If I want to avoid confusion with which device is called when someone calls us using FaceTime, what is the best way to distinguish the devices? Should I try to use a different email address to reach the iMac? Is there a best-known-method for this?

That's a nice system Kevin, and it will work very nicely with Photoshop.  I do take it that you have 16Gb RAM in Total?
250Gb SSD is a good size, but you can still run short, and that will affect Windows performance.  When you get your system, instal WinDirStat which gives you a graphic display of everything on your drive, like below. Clicking on any of the large areas will tell you what and where they are, so you can think about moving cache folders etc. to one of the HDDs.
Leave the Pagefile.sys on the boot drive.  Think about disabling Hyphenate as it takes a ton of space, and too often crashes on wake up.
    My Documents
    Desktop
    Downloads
    Look at Bridge cache
    iTunes backup
    Other stuff like that.
Think about another 500Gb drive just for Photoshop Scratch.  Drives are cheap as chips nowadays
Do yourself a favour, and invest $100 in Shadow Protect (or similar if there is such a thing) SP saves incremental backups every 15 minutes (you can set the interval, but it has no impact on performance with a system like yours).  If you have a problem you can mount the back up at any of those 15 minute points, and open files from it.  You can also make a bootable DVD image of your C drive, and be back up and running five minutes after disaster strikes.
