What is the best web compression ?

Hi all web compression experts,
I have been trying to find out what is the optimum settings for files to be downloaded on the facebook. The limit I set is 100MB.
But when i rendered my 6.5 mins video in FCE, the filesize for the .mov file is a whopping 1.8GB. After much trial & error, I follow Diana's instruction in her Apple Pro Training book. Below is the summary of the steps she taught me in her book:
Video:
Compression: MPEG-4 Video
Frame Rate: 15 fps
Keyframe: 5
Data Field Rate: 700 kbits/s
Quality: Best
Size:
Dimension: Custom; I typed in 480 x 270
Sound:
Format: AAC
Channel: Stereo
Rate: 32 kHz
DESELECT prepare for Internet Streaming.
With the above settings, my file size has been reduced to 35MB. So I can still afford to add another 65MB before it reach 100MB. I tried to change the compression to H.264 but whenever this option is chosen, the file reach 400MB and took ages to render.
I have also change to the frame rate to 25 fps but there is no difference in the filesize & picture quality.
Can someone be kind enough to gimme some tips on what the numbers in the setting "Keyframe: 5" & "Data Field Rate: 700 kbits/s" do to the video ?
Is keyframe 5 better than keyframe 10 ?
Any suggestion?
Thnaks

Hi again Ryan,
I just got very good results exporting as suggested by Vimeo in this link:
http://vimeo.com/help/compression
Format: Quicktime Movie
Codec for video: H.264
Frame-rate: Current
Keyframes: Every 30 frames
Data rate: 5000 kbits/s
Size: 1280x720
De-interlace: Yes
Sound codec: AAC
Sound Sample Rate: 44.1kHz
Audio Quality: 128kbps
I didn't see much reduction in quality, and it reduced a 457MB file to 19MB. Judging by my calculations, if a 457MB file was reduced to 19MB, a 1.8GB file should be reduced to 72MB. Something to try perhaps?
Thanks skalicki`& dpapa,
I tried the above settings but it took ages to render. When it reached 45 mins, I gave up. By & large, whenever I use H.264 it takes very long to render !

  • What is the best web host?

    Hi,
I have finished producing two websites. One of the websites is a personal website which holds all the films that I have helped produce. It is basically a CV for people to look at on the internet. It will be a large sized website, not sure how large it will be, but basically need a lot of space for it, I would imagine. I have also finished producing a website for a dentist practice which has over 500 pages. Its current size is 150MB but I have a feeling that I will be adding four images per page to the site, which will increase the size. Anyways, these have both been created with iWeb and I was wondering what is the best web host to publish these with? Now that MobileMe has gone and iCloud won't publish websites anymore, is there a certain web host that all of the iWeb users have rushed to to publish their sites? I have looked at a lot of the hosts and they all seem confusing and their own business websites look confusing, which puts me off buying from them. I am looking for the cheapest host, that would allow me to host two website, so the dentist website and my own personal website, with no bandwidth limit or disk space limit. I have read the small print on two of the 'best' web hosts that say that they have 'unlimited' bandwidth and disk space and they say that it is not unlimited and they will either charge me more for exceeding the limit or they will shut the website down. The problem is that they don't state what their limit is so I am guessing that it is a scam. They are also only charging around £2 per month, which is fine but you have to buy like 2 years with them for that price. I don't want to do that. Would prefer it if there was a host that has a free trail, even if it is as little as 24 hours trial. Would also like to not be tied in for longer than 1 year. I would also like a host that has the domain names included in the price.
Overall, this is all getting too confusing for me and there is so much to take in. I just want to know, what is everyone doing now that MobileMe has shut down and iCloud does not allow Web Publishing?
A list of people's prefered web hosts would be amazing please. Also a breif description as to why you think it is better than all of the rest.
Thank you for your time and effort.
    All the best,
    George.

The most important consideration with website hosting is reliability and good tech support - not price!
Host Excellence offer a 30 day money back guarantee if you are not satisfied. Also read aout the "Anytime Money Back Guarantee".
Be suspicious of cheap offers. For example, Yahoo offers a registration for 10 bucks but wants 35 after that. Try getting tech support from them!

  • What is the best web browser for iPad 2

What is the best web browser for iPad 2?

I have Mercury, Atomic, Dolphin and iCab. They all offer features that Safari does not have. If you liked the former mini windows view that Safari had in iOS 4, I think iCab would be a great choice. It offers something similar to that as well as tabbed browsing, DropBox support, it can identify as other browsers (I can't remember what that feature is called) and IMO - it blows Safari out of the water.
All of these browsers have more to offer than Safari, but I like iCab the best.

Hey All, do you recommend compressor 4 or what is the best file compression app to compress large video file on my Mac Book Pro?

    X,
Thanks for checking in.  The anwser to your questions are below.
Where is the material coming from?
These are MP4 files from my Canon vixia HFR40
What software are you using to edit the material?
    I am using iMOVIE 9.0.9
What do you want to do with the files after compression? I want to email I need to have the file be smaller than 100MB to send.
I am an actor and I video tape my auditions and send them to my agent so I need Highest Quality HD files that have small file sizes, no more than 100MB.  The scenes are like 1-5 Mins long in most cases. Thanks for your help.

  • What is the best lossless compression for video?

I have a large amount of captured video, which is saved in uncompressed format.
I want to archive this video and I need to figure out what the best compression choice is.
It's video only and I want the archived materials to be compressed as losslessly as possible and as small as possible. Losslessness is more important than size. The original material was captured in FCP from a video camera using Firewire. It is NTCS DV.
Multiple angles of this source material were edited in FCP and rendered to make the final, uncompressed files. Those are what I need to compress and archive.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There is no such thing as lossless compression.
This is not really true. There are many ways to compress - just google "compression algorithms" and you'll find some. Two basic schemes are either lossless or lossy. Lossless seeks to remove redundant or repetitive information, this is like Run Length Encoding or LZW encoding. Lossy throws away information that is generally "not perceived". JPEG, MPEG, H.264, DV are examples of lossy compression.
YUV "lossless" is 4:2:2 and is considered uncompressed, yet it takes up less space than RGB 4:4:4 encoding. Simply zipping the file compresses it (uncompressed codecs squeeze better, but DV does compress, indicating redundant information) - a TIFF sequence might have run length encoding or LZW. Both are lossless.
To get back to the question, Patrick:Losslessness is more important than size.
H.264 is a fantastic compression - it is, however, FAR from lossless AND it is not directly editable. You'd need to convert it back to an editable format, ensuring even more loss. Not within the parameters of your desired solution...

  • What are the Best Web File Export settings?

I am running Premiere Pro CS3 on Win XP SP3, 4 GB RAM. I have tried several settings exporting a 2 1/2 minutes movie trailer to Windows Media Player, .flv, Quicktime, and Real Video files, so that I can add it to a web site for downloading. Of course, all of these are compressed files. I've tried very many settings but am having trouble getting a relatively good quality resolution file that is small enough to load fairly quickly. The best file is a Quicktime file. However, even though the movie plays in a small window, it is 41 MB (a big file).
Please share any settings that have produced a good quality file under 10 MB.
    Thanks,
    Linda

    > You just need to use a larger file or settle for less quality
This is not always exactly true. There are many things that can affect the perceived quality. In Premiere's case:
1.) Deinterlacing: If your sources are interlaced, Premiere (by default) will deinterlace them before scaling down for web export. Premiere's deinterlacer is as bad as it gets. If you are doing a ratio >= 2:1 (such as 480i -> 240p) it is probably better to untick the "deinterlace" checkbox, as the line-pairs will be blended on output anyway because of the large scaling ratio.
2.) Soft scaling: Premiere's Bicubic resampling is not really ideal for large ratio reductions. Unfortunately, there is not much way around this without using other tools.
3.) Noise: Video noise can greatly reduce the efficiency of encoding -- and therefore, when using a set data rate, it makes lowers quality output. Premiere does have a noise reduction filter option in AME, but it is quite slow and not the most sophisticated solution. You may want to experiment with it anyway: It can potentially make low bandwidth encodes look much better.
4.) Frame rate: It seems like a basic concept, but many people forget that you can greatly increase your spatial quality by reducing the frame rate. If you can live without the motion smoothness of 30 fps, you can get much higher quality with 15 fps at the same data rate.
5.) Two-pass Encoding: Unfortunately, Premiere does not have 2-pass for FLV VP6 which, IMO, is probably the "best looking" web output. You should look at other tools like Sorenson Squeeze or On2 Flix. In these cases you'll need to export a lossless intermediary AVI file to maximize quality.

  • What's the best Web content filter for managing client's on our network

We have a somewhat mini scale network. We have anywhere from 40 to 60 ranging from WLan and Lan devices. Right now we have been using opendns for content filtering but we would like to limit certain sites to just certain groups and if someone goes onto a site they shouldn't then what we would like to know is the IP of the user and there mac address If we could somehow find a captive portal software or hardware that would be perfect because it takes a lot of guess work out of things. Have a look at Vicomsoft and their Intergate Inspect package. This runs on a Mac server and lets you link to Open Directory for authenticating users and lets you set filtering for users or for groups of users. Sounds exactly what you want.

  • What is the best web publishing software?

I know this probably isnt the place to post this, but i figured a lot of other business owners my have mbp's. I will probably have my new 15" c2d by the end of this week, or the start of next. I want to start using it immediately to build a good website for my business. I have no idea where to start when it comes to mac software, so any info would be helpful. Oh yeah, iweb isn't an option for me, since i dont want a .mac account. Thanks!

    I've found the following:
    - Dreamweaver is for hard-core web development, can do everything but is not necessarily "newbie" friendly, there is a learning curve, and it helps if you've had some web experience. It is the program you will eventually get if you get in to website development in any serious way.
    - iWeb is the other end of the spectrum, need no experience, it's all drag and drop and like using a word processor. You are limited to a set number of things you can do with the webpages you create, but the program does those few things gracefully as only Apple can. You may get frustrated with its limitations over time. As far as I know, you need a .Mac account to make use of it, I think you "could" save the web pages it creates and upload elsewhere, but I don't think it's easy at the moment.
    - In between the above two is Rapidweaver. It is nowhere near as powerful as Dreamweaver but lets you do a lot more editing and "messing around" with your webpages than iWeb does. You can also upload Rapidweaver creations to either .Mac or your own web host. The thing I like most about Rapidweaver is the stunningly beautiful templates it comes with.
OK, that's my experience, hope it is helpful.

  • What is the best way to encode and compress?

I just finished an hour and a half long video of comedians performing. The client wants this to be put on dvd so he can mass produce it. What is the best way to compress this and encode it? Should I buy compressor or can I do it in handbrake? What are the best best settings to make sure it doesnt lose quality? Please advise...

You should be able to get up to 2 hours at least.
The best way is to export as a Master File and drop it into iDVD, Toast or some other DVD authoring app.

  • What's the best way for a web app to handle logins and sessions?

I'm deploying in JBoss, using JSF. As is often the case, I keep User information in an entity bean. My question is, what's the best way to handle this bean?
My inclination is to create a login page with a LoginBackingBean atached to it. When the user attempts to log in, it will see if there is a User entity bean that corresponds to the given name and password. If there is no User bean that matches, obviously we show an informative error screen.
But what happens if there is a valid user?
In the plain old Servlet world (without EJB / J2EE) I would just put the User object (it's an object, not an EJB) into the HttpSession, and I would create a Filter that would check for the presence of that User object, and I would map the filter to something like /members/*, and that would be it. I would use Hibernate to persist the User object, and there would also be a filter that creates a Hibernate session and stores it in the Request so that the User object would work and persist.
How do I do this within the J2EE / EJB world?
My first thought would be to just do the same thing. Install the User bean into the HttpSession, and create a filter and do all the same stuff. Is that the right way to do it? It would work pretty well with JSF because I could just access things in the normal JSF way: #{user.firstName} would find the "user" object in the HttpSession scope. So that's good.
One question that comes up from that is if the user makes some change to the User object that is in the Session scope, will the EJB automatically do the right thing and make those changes persistent? Is there anything else I need to do?
I'm new to the EJB world, but from what I can see so far, it seems like it's the best way to think about a web application.
    Thanks

    hi ,
i think the best way is to create java beans ,in that bean call your EJB ,
and check the validation over there.
and make that bean scope to session.
in each and everypage try to check the session ,if it is not valid then forward to your login page...
otherwise continue to give access to him like guest

What is the best way of compressing a large 3 hour final cut file. I shot the play and it is in final cut and I rndered it so now I have a 22gb file that I need to put on a dvd . Any suggestions

Presuming your menus aren't complicated(include audio or video) the total size for the MPG-2 and AC3 files should probably be under 8GB for a dual layer disk. The inspector will tell you the estimated size. 2-pass varible bit rate would be recommended.
Trying to fit 3 hours on a DVD-5 will only bring very noticable quality hits. Compressor will let you change the average bit rate so that you can fit 174 minutes but trade-off isn't worth it in my opinion.
Be aware that dual-layer -R and +R media may not play well for everyone everywhere.
I presume you are not making 1000 or more copies? If you were replication could solve this.
One other alternative would be to break-up the show into two parts and spread it across two DVD-5s.

  • What is the best way to compress a song?

What is the best way to compress a song to bring it into IMOVIE?

I assume you are referring to compressing the file size of the resultant song, rather than compressing the audio dynamic range of the tracks in the song.
GarageBand only outputs .AIFF files which are uncompressed 16-bit, 44.1KHz stereo audio.
As far as I know, there is no point in compressing the GarageBand song before importing it into iMovie, because iMovie uses the same format for audio internally as GarageBand does.
You can open a GarageBand song in iTunes and use iTunes to convert it to an MP3, but when you import that MP3 into iMovie it's going to up-sample the MP3 back into AIFF format anyway.
