What is the blue dot right next to the signal bars?

I know E means Edge. 3G is 3G network. But what is the blue dot means?
Also what is UMTS/HSDPA? When do I know I am using that connection?
Thanks,

GPRS = General Packet Radio Service (could be called 2.5G)
Also what is UMTS/HSDPA? When do I know I am using that connection?
UTMS = Universal Telecommunications Mobile System (commonly called 3G)
HSDPA = High speed download Packet access (commonly called 3.5G)
Thanks,
The Blue dot is GPRS, the E is edge while 3G is 3G and HSDPA is the highest data speed, for some reason Apple do not show an icon when this is being used, some other manufacturers indicate when 3.5G is being used.

  • How do you remove the blue dot from next to the podcasts.

How do you remove the blue dot from next to the podcasts. I listen to 100s of podcasts on my ipod so the blue dot does not leave itunes. I use the blue dot to identify which podcasts are new. It used to be easy to remove the blue dot just play the podcasts for a second in more recent versions of itunes it is harder one has to play it for longer and half the dot is left. How do I select a dozen podcasts and mark them as used. I mean remove the blue dot.

What does the bookmark bar do? How does it work?

You can use the bookmarks bar in Safari to have links to some sites permanently shown at the top of the screen below the address field and icons - so you just have to tap the link on the bar to go to that site as opposed to tapping the bookmarks icon and finding the link in there. So it's just a slightly quicker way to go some of your more regularly used sites

The little 'E' that was next to my signal bars has dissapeared and now i can't send texts, make calls or go on the internet. WHY? HELP!

As suggested make sure "cellular data" is ON and you have valid cellular data plan.
That "E" sign only shows the network (Edge) or 3G (if you are in the 3G network), but it has no relation to you not been able to make regular calls or sending regular texts with network signal (in the form of bars) being present.

  • Ipod touch 4th gen - what is the yellow bar know as "other" in storage on itunes?

ipod touch 4th gen - what is the yellow bar known as "other" in storage on itunes?  It is using all the space and not allowing me to download anything else.  Is there a way of getting rid of it?

It includes arwor, mail. messages and some app date. Basically, what is not icluded in the other categories. If over about 1 1/2 GB that usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.  Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

  • What is the best bar-code app

what is the best bar-code scanning app?

    ohjay,
First I am going to criticize the general practice on this forum of not posting one's "Location" and "Carrier". This information is important to almost any question that can be asked about an iPhone !!!
That said; Give "Redlaser Bar Code and QR code scanner" a try. I believe e-Bay bought out the company that started it and is now the application owner/manufacturer.
It will do bar codes and "QR" codes, kind of an all in one scanner and it is free. But like I said it depends a lot on were you live as to how well any scanner is going to perform searches and such in your location.
PS - Just download all the free ones until you find one you like the best. Free is good and their are a gazillion free ones (well maybe not that many but a lot ).

  • What is that blue dot for?

When I am in the main Podcast section of the Source window many of the podcasts have a blue dot beside them in a very small column (the very first column which has no title).
These dots also are shown in the graphic under the title "Adding Songs and More" in the iPod 101 on-line help at http://www.apple.com/support/ipod101/tunes/3/ but there is no explanation I can find anywhere about its significance.
Since it does not appear against every Podcast in my library I am curious.
    Thanks.

  • What is the relevance of the '4 dots' BB icon near the signal bars?

There is a '4 dots' Blackberry symbol next to the sigal bars in the top-right corner of the screen.
To my understanding on the legacy devices, this represented a connection to the BES infrastructure.
With this device relying on activesync for email, why does it need any sort of connection to BES?
I do not use BBM and do not have it activated either so there should be no connection to BES Infratructure.
    Thanks.

This tells you that the BlackBerry Services are working.
Take a look here for an explanation of the different symbols that can show up...

  • What does the progress bar mean?

I have just started using TM after installing Leopard a few weeks ago. My plan is to continue to use Super Duper to do a weekly, bootable backup, but to use TM for essentially data backup. With that in mind, I have excluded system files, applications, and other partitions on the backup drive, figuring that the actual amount of data to be backed up will be relatively small.
On it initial backup the progress bar showed 30 GB possible and when the progress bar showed 10 GB, which was far more than I had anticipated, I stopped it, thinking that I needed to fine tune what I was excluding. When I look at the file, backups.backupdb, I see that it's right around 2 GB right now.
This leads me to believe that the progress bar on the initial run is only indicating how much of the data has been evaluated not necessarily how much has been backed up. Can someone confirm this or set me straight on just what the progress bar is telling me?
    -Bill

One of the things I noticed is that I had indeed left out one of the partitions on the very drive that I am using as the TM backup. I know that TM won't backup its own backup, but I don't think it can identify other partitions on the same drive. The partition in question actually contains the SuperDuper backup, something I don't need on TM. I did go back and exclude it and the calculated backup dropped from 30 GB to 20 GB, which is still way in excess of what I am actually wanting to back up.
Given what you have said about potentially damaging the backup, perhaps I need to start over. How would I go about doing this, just delete the existing backupdb file? Then go in and rework the excluded files and really narrow things down. This does seem, however, to defeat the process somewhat, the idea of just let it do its thing.
Since my photos and music are already kept on an external drive, on the same partition, in fact, that I will be keeping the TM backup, those are files which do not come into the TM picture. Actually the more I think about this the more dicey it is becoming.
What I have been doing up until now is doing a weekly SuperDuper backup and copying my Documents folder separately. I have five folders, representing up to five weeks in a month and would copy the Documents folder into week one the first week of the month and so on throughout the month. Then next month I would overlay week by week what I had done before. That assured me that I would always have one month of Documents should I restore a SuperDuper backup beyond what was in the Documents folder on that particular SD version.
What I am wanting to do is essentially the same thing except use TM to backup the Documents folder. Perhaps that's a too narrowly defined and too difficult to implement use of TM. Perhaps I have to rethink this. Comments?

  • What is the "Bookmarks Bar" and how do I use it?

I've been all over my iPad user guide and can find zero information about the "bookmarks bar" except how to make it appear and disappear.  I am now able to make a blank area near the top of the Safari screen appear and disappear - GREAT!!!!  Information as to what this area may contain, how to place and remove items from it, etc is NOWHERE!  If there is anyone out there that uses this feature, please explain what it is and if you find it useful.
In windows internet explorer, there is a "favorites bar" near the top of the screen where I can place the icons for my most used favorites.  Instead of opening a favorites menu and scrolling through it to find what I want, I just click the icon that is always present at the top of the internet explorer page - really useful.  I imagine that "bookmarks bar" is a similar feature in Safari but it's completely ignored in the iPad user guide.
Thanks for any help you can give.

    Thanks Skydiver,
This was easy and does exactly what I thought it would do!  What threw me off was the menu that pops up when you go to save a page as a bookmark.  The menu lists 6 choices:  Add bookmark; Add to reading list; Add to home screen; mail link to this page; Tweet; and Print.  Notice there is no choice to "add to bookmarks bar".   You have to select "add bookmark" and then within the next process box you have the option to specify an alternative to bookmark.  When you look for the alternatives, "bookmarks bar" shows up.  Not exactly obvious, is it?
It's almost like they don't don't want you to use it.  This is absolutely OBTUSE!
    Thanks again, Skydivier!

  • I have a arrow right next to my power bar it will not go away on my iPhone 4s

There is a arrow on the top of my phone and it will not go away what does it mean

    Hello,
This arrow next to your Battery symbol at the top of your phone means you are playing some sort of music or sound.
To make sure you are not do the following:
Press your Home button twice quicky
You should now have a list of open apps. Hold down the App and press the red button. This does not delete the app but it closes it.
Once these steps are complete if the arrow is gone, you are all set!

  • What does the scroll bar do?

When scrollng a Safari page using my fingers, on my new iPad(3), the scroll bar on the right shows up. However, I do not seem to be able to "grab" it and use it.
How do I use that scroll bar to move up and down a page rapidly?

Are you saying there is no fast way to go to the bottom or back to the top? That the scrollbar is just for show?
I have some webpages that are very long and it still takes a dozen or more flicks to get to the bottom.
    I am not impressed.

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. (Is this wiping) See:
