What is the burn/write speed of my built-in drive?

Hi -
I know, dumb question: I just started working on someone's Dual 2 gig G5. Is the DVD capable of a burn speed above 4x? I know this is what is shows in when I go to burn, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something...
Thanks.

Thanks, Steve. I appreciate the effort. The Pioneer site did help, in that I now believe that I probably have a 2x speed, certainly not an eight. But in case an Apple person reads this, I'd like to ditto an earlier suggestion that Apple try to give us this information directly--either via the operating system profile or even by a direct email, memo. Sure, I now have a hunch (not being the best at reading a very techical web-site), but the "can of worms" has been opened. The Pioneer site says that my drive (?) needs a different kind of DVD disk than does the Apple message I received via the operating system! Pioneer writes that I need to use only "General 650nm discs" whereas the message I received on my computer said my computer will only work with a "2.0 General DVD-R" disc. Maybe these are the same, but I don't know! Again, if Apple wants to keep up their reputation for "ease of use," they'd better start with problems (aka, 2006-speak, "issues",) like this. The upshot of this is that a user can become overwhelmed, forget what they were working on to begin with, and simply quit. I have a few unfinished "issues" already, and the number seems to grow daily.
Thanks for the referral, though. I think I'll just go buy the Apple disks and cross my fingers. Alinde

  • What is the Read/Write speed for a 250gb Serial ATA hard drive?

Hello. I've been having some problems via my Mac (Kernel panic at start up) and is thinking wether or not it is the hard drive.
Does anyone know what the Write speed is for the specified hard drive. I'm currently getting about 5 mbps and that feels a bit slow
I'm on a Macbook Pro mid 2009 model.
    Thanks in advance
    Ashley.

I haven't got the logs. I had to reinstall everything in order to get it to start up (Couldn't find ACPI?)
And I'm only asking because it seems like my laptop HD is running slow. Is it normally about 5mbps for a 5400rpm HDD?

  • What are the read write speeds of the new Mac Pro's storage options?

The subject line says it all.. I would hate to go for the 1TB option only to have it be slower than the 512GB.

Samsung starts mass producing PCIe SSDs with 1400MB/s read speeds By Matthew Humphries Jun. 17, 2013 11:27 am
When the new MacBook Air got the teardown treatment last week, there wasn’t much different from the previous model apart from the addition of a Haswell processor, bigger battery, dual microphones, and a new SSD.
In fact, it’s that SSD that was the most unexpected new component, as it saw Apple switch from a SATA to a PCIe-connected storage solution.
That faster storage solution isn’t going to be limited to MacBook Airs , though. The PCIe SSD was supplied to Apple by Samsung, and Samsung has today announced it is already mass producing the drives.
The new drive is known as the XP941 and Samsung will offer it in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB configurations. It achieves read speeds of 1,400MB/s, which clocks it at 2.5x faster than a SATA SSD. It also only weighs 6 grams and measures 80 x 22mm. Samsung claims it only takes up a 7th of the space occupied by a typical 2.5-inch SSD.
With Samsung being the only company currently boasting mass production of such drives, supplies may be stretched depending on how many manufacturers decide to use them.
Apple is surely already taking a large chunk of the stock every month already, leaving everyone else to fight over the rest.
    ===========
It depends a lot on the pattern, and also what type of file, what any particular benchmark too. Intech SpeedTools gives you more flexability in read and write file tests - SSD writes are highly variable, it is the high IOPS and high reads that boost a system so much.
People that were using PCIe SSD 6G and multiple SSDs have found that Aperture, Lightroom, Photoshop scratch AND having the system on their SSD run smoothly, fast, even faster than those "olde" SATA3 6G controllers they were using to get 800-900MB/sec.
I just don't think you looked on Barefeats or Googled long enough to find some reviews, and there have been more - the large Anandtech review of the nMP is a good start.

  • How do you change the dvd write speed in pre 11

can i change the dvd write speed i pre 11 and if so how   thanks

    Not in Premiere Elements.
You'll need to use Premiere Elements to burn the DVD files to a folder, and then use a program like the excellent, free ImgBurn to burn the VIDEO_TS folder to a disc at a slower speed.

I have a dsl internet conection with a download speed of .66 mbps.  I would like to watch netflix with a wireless conection to apple tv.  What is the required internet speed?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Netflix recommend a minimum connection speed of 0.5 Mbps, however at that speed many of the other features of the Apple TV will be painfully slow.

  • What's the minimum Clock Speed Requirement for GB3?

What's the minimum Clock Speed Requirement for GB3 (assuming one wishes to create and play mult. audio tracks within this current iLife app)? Is it 733mhz?
Here's what i was able to find on
    iLife ’06 requirements:
    To install iLife, you need:
    • A Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G4, G5, or Intel Core processor; 733 MHZ or faster required for iDVD
    • 256 MB of RAM; 512 MB recommended
    • Mac OS X version 10.3.9 or Mac OS X version 10.4.3 or later; Mac OS X version 10.4.4 recommended
    • iTunes 6.0.2 and QuickTime 7.0.4 (included)
    • A DVD drive for installation
    • 10 GB of disk space to install iLife '06 applications

    Thanks Christoph, TIA, and AppleGuy!
Christoph, what model are you using? You said you have even less Mhz, but your model looks like the same as mine.
TIA, I looked at the other thread (thanks for the link) any idea what other models are affected by the sound output problem?
I probably will back up first just to be safe, and won't try running them both at the same time. I was hoping though to have full functionality of the Podcasting features plus all the old music ones without slowing the machine down.

what is the internet sharing speed of macmini?

Depends on the port you are sharing. If over wireless it will be the wireless speed of the slowest wireless device on your network for the wireless band in use. That might be anywere from 54 Mb/s to 230 Mb/s - that's Mega-Bits/second.

What is the best way to set up an external drive for video storage?

Check the formatting. It need to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). This is also known as HFS+.
FAT32 and NTFS formatting will not work with iMovie.
If necessary, you can reformat using Disk Utility.
Make one large partition. No need for multiple partitions.
Do moves or copies to the external drive through iMovie as detailed in iMovie Help. If you move Events in the Finder, they may become unlinked from the projects that use them.

  • What's the normal fan speed?

Hello, my fans have always been around 2000 rpm with both tiger and leopord, so I am wondering what is the normal range for fan speed when the computer is not running anything heavy.

So, I'm not crunching much at the moment; yet I have 133 F and 3906 rpm. However, that doesn't signify. It was flat on a wood table. Now, laptop; Room fan now on. That fan is the main thing. I read a great overview, will post link if I can find it, that air is like fluid dynamics: a MBP flat on a table in an air conditioned room (no fanned air movement) will run hotter than an MBP with space under, with a room fan, moving warmer air. Yah, no, really true.
Get freeware iStat Control 1.1 (1.2 soon): (http://www.islayer.com/), which will display fans' speed and temps in the menu bar, andmore, and make popcorn too, with the lavalamp thingee.
Then I use Fan Control, 1.2, freeware, and set it up a tiny bit just to be cool: " ... Do you think your MacBook (Pro) is running to hot? Give Fan Control a try then. Some MacBook (Pro) are just to hot for daylong use. Fan Control adjusts the minimum fan speed depending on the current CPU temperature. For safety, it leaves the original automatic fan speed control intact ..." Leopard Ready, yah.
    http://www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/index.html
Both are preference panes in System preferences, which is very elegant, imho. And yes I have Leopard still shrinkwrapped. I will take a stab at it soon. Goodbye, cruel world (nah).

    Hi,
I use an LG BE06LU10 Super Multi Blue .. it does not say anywhere on the box or site that it is compatable with MAC OS but it works with FCP7 and indeed I have Toast with the BluRay plugin and it works great from there too. Have a look here http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&biw=1440&bih=780&q=LG+BE06lu10&um =1&ie=UTF-8&cid=16726374001672668744&ei=7xKzTMSYMs6L4Ab9puX5BQ&sa=X&oi=productcatalogresult&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCYQ8wIwAA#ps-sellers
By the way I also use this drive to burn LighScribe dirves (DVDs). I first saw it on www.MACVIDEO.TV in 2008 ! look here http://www.macvideo.tv/dvd-authoring/reviews/index.cfm?reviewid=101802

  • What's the maximum cpu speed?

My KT3V manual says that I can use 2.8GHZ CPU or higher.
    Mine is a 1.7GHz one.
What's the limit to the above "higher". I have heard that a friend of mine uses a KT3V with a 3.2 GHZ (the latest released by MSI)
Thanks for claryfing this to me

You are right Maesus. The technical sheet shows the Barton XP 3000+ as the maximum possible cpu to use on this board. Perhaps I was confused or my friend, I won't hear from him until the beginin of July when he comes back from L.A.
Anyway, I'm not an expert, just a single user. If in the future it MSI launches a CPU higher than 3.0+ for 166/333MHZ chipset, can I expect to use it with the K3TV or this Barton would be the latest?
    Thank you for your help

  • Burn Folder - What Is The Burn Folder's Proper Location?

    Good morning.
This morning when I started up the computer, upon reaching the Desktop, the Burn Folder [ http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/7752/screencapturetb4.png ] was located on the Desktop.
A family member who isn't here right now was using the computer last night, so I can't ask them where they dragged the Burn Folder from.
I would like to put the Burn Folder back in its proper location, but I don't know where that is.
Could someone please find where it's located in their computer, and tell me.
    Thanks.
    17" iMac G4, 1GHz PowerPC, 768mb RAM Mac OS X (10.4.7)

You keep referring to "the" Burn Folder as if it is a unique object with a required location. You (or your family member) can create as many burn folders as you want, and they can be wherever you put them. If this particular burn folder is on the Desktop, it may well have been created there. You can move it wherever you want it (including the trash, if you and your family are finished with it)
