What is the correct way to install Leopard?

It seems like everytime I upgrade to a new OS, I end up screwing something up. I am borderline thinking about taking my laptop up to the apple store and having them install Leopard for me. Last week in another thread someone posted something saying I should backup my home directory? and save it to my external drive then install leopard and then drag that home directory back over. This was said to be a work around instead of using Archive and Install. I guess I could do that but are there other suggestions out there?
I just don't want to happen what happened when I installed Leopard on my desktop. I had about 4 libraries of stuff and another folder that was marked Previous system and that had a bunch of files and then I had the home directory for the old system! The bottom line I had a lot of stuff that I ended up deleting which freed up my hard drive space significantly.
I would like to make the install on my Macbook Pro clean, simple and painless as possible!
Thanks!
Oh yea if I decide to back up the home directory. Do I just drag the little house icon over to my external drive? If so, once Leopard is installed, do I drag it back to the same location I took it from?

If you don't mind reinstalling all your applications, backup your home folder to an external, boot off your Leopard Disk and go to Disk Utility. Erase your hard drive and format HFS+. Than do an Erase & Install. After that is complete, restart. Once you go through the setup procedures, perform all the software updates until they are all installed. Now move your Home Directory back. Finally, start reinstalling your applications. This will give you a brand new Leopard system that should work fine.
First however, make a bootable clone of your HD to an external drive for backup. You need to erase the drive and format to HFS+ with a GUID partition table. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to make the clone.
To back up the home folder, yes, drag the little house icon to an external, but with the bootable clone, this isn't really neccesary.
This isn't the easiest way to install Leopard, but it gives you the best chance of having no issues.

  • What is the best way to install Leopard?

    I am hoping for some advice as to the best method to install Leopard - should I erase and install or simply do an upgrade?? Also, is it worth cloning the hard drive or installing Leopard onto a clean hard drive first?? If so, how does one clone a hard drive and then how do you boot from an external hard drive??
    Or should I wait for the next version of Leopard (I am a little concerned about all the reports of bugs etc.)??
    Any advice would be very welcome - I have had this MacBook Pro (my first Mac) for a year or two now and love it, but I'm not too sure about how to go about all these things.
    Many thanks.

    Hola Erve,
    I would say that if you are hesitant that you should wait for at least rev 1 to come out or once you have found out that all the programs that you need to run are compatible with Leopard. With any major upgrade, you are bound to experience some minor or major issues.
    If you decide to install, whatever method you use make sure you back up first!
    The best back up mechanism is for you to create a clone of your original drive - this way, if something goes wrong you can revert back to your back up.
    See this about cloning:
    http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Development/Computers/docs/sysadmin/mac-clone.html
    http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/macgems/2005/06/superduper/
    (I'm sure you could find more info you search these forums as well)
    After you have made the proper back up, if you want to start clean, I would say that the best way is to erase and install. Know that you will have to reinstall all the applications and move all the files to their correct locations - photos, music, documents, etc.
    FYI, I did an upgrade and I have not encountered any major issues. I have even been surprised of the programs that are still running under Leopard!
    Anyway, good luck!

  • What is the correct way to teach leopard server mail about junk mail?

    All my clients are using apple mail and they basically taught their own client each their own way of filter junk mail. This works ok...but after upgrading to Leopard Server I think the server can be trained with junk mail data too? If so, anyone know how to set it up? I only see options to mark mail as junk mail on the server side, nothing about training.

    I have done it on a mac os 10.4 server, it works great. Have a look here

  • What is the correct way to upgrade 5.0.4 to 5.1 Universal?

    I just received Final Cut Studio Universal, and I have Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 installed what is the correct way to upgrade all the Final Cut Studio applications? Do install over or delete each application and then reinstall?
    As always thanks in advance for reading and replying to my Post,
    Sebastian

    WHEN I do it, I'm going to archive what's necessary and desirable to keep, erase my hard drive, reinstall Tiger, do the upgrades, then install 5.1 clean and do the upgrades.
    Might sound like overkill, but I really love a clean, fast machine and nothing does it better!

  • What is the correct way to call older version of Adober Reader?

    What is the correct way to call older version of Adober Reader? Specifically version 8? Acrobar Reader 8 or Adober Reader 8? Is is necessary to include "Reader"? We are creating a form and are adding instructions that it works with version 8 and newer. We want to make sure it is worded correctly!
    Thanks!
    Danielle

    When you "Save as" and you select the "compatibility with" for older versions, the document will be compatible with whatever version you choose, be it 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or higher. If you want to "test it", you'll need a computer with Reader 8 installed, but I've never seen the "Save as" make something that was incompatible with the version it was saving for.

  • What is the correct way to unistall an application?

    simply dragging it to the trash is very likely to leave files/preferences scattered everywhere. what is the correct way to uninstall? (App = Microsoft Silverlight). Thanks

    chriswalsh wrote:
    The installer for Silverlight installed it as a seperate volume displayed on the desktop...
    Likely that's not the app itself. When you download most Mac software, you are downloading a .dmg file (a disk image) - opening that (which may happen automatically) mounts a disk image on your desktop, and then you drag the app from that disk image to your Applications folder (or an installer runs).
    After copying/installing the app, you Eject the disk image, then delete the .dmg file (from your Downloads folder, probably).

  • What is the correct way to add styling to drag-and-drop created calendars?

    I have a working instance of a rich client calendar. I generated the view with the required fields (start, stop, provider, ...), put it into the App Module, and dragged it onto a JSF page to create a calendar.
    Next I created an activityScope object in a class called CalendarBean (no inheritance)
    Class CalendarBean()
    private HashMap<Set<String>, InstanceStyles> activityColorMap;
    +..+
    +public CalendarBean() {+
    super();
    activityColorMap = new HashMap<Set<String>, InstanceStyles>();
    HashSet setEd = new HashSet<String>();
    HashSet setLen = new HashSet<String>();
    setEd.add("Work");
    setLen.add("Home");
    activityColorMap.put(setEd, CalendarActivityRamp.getActivityRamp(CalendarActivityRamp.RampKey.ORANGE));
    activityColorMap.put(setLen, CalendarActivityRamp.getActivityRamp(CalendarActivityRamp.RampKey.RED));
    +}+
    +}+
    Next, I linked this up as a backing bean and associated the ActivityStyles of CalendarBean to it:
    +#{backingBeanScope.calendarBean.activityColorMap}+
    I populated some records in the database with properties "Work" and "Ed', but they show default blue.
    As I understand it, I need to do something with the getTags() method of the underlying CalendarActivity class, but I'm not quite sure how to do that.
    Took a stab at creating a class, CalendarActivityBean, that extended CalendarActivity, and pointed all the CalendarActivity references I had to the new class, but it didn't seem to fire (in debug), and I got into trouble, when inserting records, with
    public void calendarActivityListener(CalendarActivityEvent calendarActivityEvent) {
    currActivity = (CalendarActivityBean) calendarActivityEvent.getCalendarActivity();
    being an illegal cast
    What is the correct way to add provider-based styling to drag-and-drop create calendars?
    Ed Schechter

    A colleague of mine was kind enough to solve this:
    The calendar has ActivityStyles property = #{calendarBean.activityStyles}
    CalendarBean looks something like this:
    package com.hub.appointmentscheduler.ui.schedule;
    import java.util.HashMap;
    import java.util.HashSet;
    import java.util.Set;
    import oracle.adf.view.rich.util.CalendarActivityRamp;
    import oracle.adf.view.rich.util.InstanceStyles;
    +public class CalendarBean {+
    private HashMap activityStyles;
    private String dummy;
    +public CalendarBean() {+
    +// Define colors+
    activityStyles = new HashMap<Set<String>, InstanceStyles>();
    HashSet setPending = new HashSet<String>();
    HashSet setArrived = new HashSet<String>();
    HashSet setApproved = new HashSet<String>();
    HashSet setCompleted = new HashSet<String>();
    setApproved.add("APPROVED");
    setPending.add("PENDING");
    setArrived.add("ARRIVED");
    setCompleted.add("COMPLETED");
    activityStyles.put(setApproved, CalendarActivityRamp.getActivityRamp(CalendarActivityRamp.RampKey.GREEN));
    activityStyles.put(setPending, CalendarActivityRamp.getActivityRamp(CalendarActivityRamp.RampKey.ORANGE));
    activityStyles.put(setArrived, CalendarActivityRamp.getActivityRamp(CalendarActivityRamp.RampKey.PLUM));
    activityStyles.put(setCompleted, CalendarActivityRamp.getActivityRamp(CalendarActivityRamp.RampKey.LAVENDAR));
    +}+
    +public void setactivityStyles(HashMap activityStyles) {+
    this.activityStyles = activityStyles;
    +}+
    +public HashMap getactivityStyles() {+
    return activityStyles;
    +}+
    +}+
    Now, go into the Bindings tab on the calendar page, double click the calendar binding, and specify the column you've defined as the calendar's Provider in the Tags dropdown.
    Should show colors.

  • 1.4.2 - What is the correct way to format output in the java.io.PrintStream

    With Java 1.4.2:
    What is the correct way to format output in the java.io.PrintStream?
    The following is incorrect, even though it is still used in the The JavaTM Tutorial at: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/
    System.out.formatThis returns "cannot resolve the method 'format'"
    Any detailed suggestions or information is greatly appreciated.

    The following is incorrect, even though it is still
    used in the The JavaTM Tutorial at:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/
    The whole format thing has been introduced in 1.5. The tutorial also states it's been "updated to 1.5.".
    That's all I've got to say for I don't know how you can format a PrintWriter, let alone a PrintStream, prior to 1.5. I'm not really sure there is any way. Any "legacy way", that is. There almost certainly are third-party API which achieve similar results.

  • HT1364 I just bought a new PC and now have ample space on my C drive to house my music Library which is currenlty installed on a external drive.  What is the best way to install and move the itunes library to my C Drive?

    I just bought a new PC and now have ample space on my C drive to house my music Library which is currenlty installed on a external drive.  What is the best way to install and move the itunes library to my C Drive?

    If the entire library is on the external drive then simply copy the iTunes folder into <User's Music> on the new computer, then install iTunes. If you've already installed iTunes you will want to remove the empty iTunes folder in <User's Music> first.
    If it turns out you only have the media folder on the external drive then take a look at this post...

  • What are the correct steps for installing Oracle Entitlement Server SSM?

    Can somebody explain what are the correct steps to install OES SSM 10.1.4.3? I have installed OES admin 10.1.4.3 and applied the CP2 patch. it is allowing me to open Entitlement Administration, where I can define the policy.
    Is it sufficient to have this Entitlement Admin to call the policy from BPM? Do I need a SSM ?

  • What's the correct order to install OEM Grid Control + DB + AS?

    Hi everbody! I'm getting start on OracleAS and Grid Control.
    What's the correct order to install:
    * Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control
    * Database 10gR2
    * Application Server 10gR3
    (on RHEL4-Upd2)
    or the order is not important?
    I need have the environment for each oracle software ($ORACLE_HOME, $ORACLE_BASE)? Or install first one, and change the environment and install, change again and install, etc.. ? :)
    Tks!

    Hey Rafael! You only have to use the Grid Control CDS, AS, repository database and grid control software are installed automatically, so you dont have to worry about the order u should have to follow.
    Anyways if u have already installed a database u can use that one as a repository.
    about the enviorment variables i guess u´ll be prompted for just one only directory cause u only need to install the software only one time.
    hope u find this interesting!!

  • What's the correct way to handle changes in RDBMS/DBadapter?

    In my project all changes to the database are not done via Jdeveloper but via TOAD. This means DBadapters must be made aware of changes in the database.
    I tried to re-run the DBad.apter wizard twice (2 different services) - to make it aware of changes in the DB. Both times it failed. I think was after the import database tab. The next tab was just blank.
    So what's the correct way of reconile changes in the db backwards into Jdev?
    BTW, in the DBadapter wiz its not possible the remove a already imported table. How do I come across the situation where I want the DBadapter to point to af different table? - and possibly remove old references to another one - which might have been removed in the DB.
    As It is now - I have to re-work all my DBadapters, which is not very much fun...
    Rgds, Henrik

    Trust me, I hv done that umpteen nbr of times.
    I hate BA's coming to me with changes, for which I hv to modify the DB adapter.
    One big loop-hole with BPEL is if we try to modify the adapters/toplink, it doesnt tend to work properly.
    The manthra for such modifications is ... "recreate", which is definetely not a good practise.
    You may not like but gottu live with it, my friend.
    Pointing to a different table, I achieve it by doing a "Shift+Delete" to all the references of the old table in the BPEL project ... :|
    There isnt a specific provision in the wzd (I am not sure of the latest version, though).

    Hello ajdoyle78. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    The April 2005 and earlier Power Mac G5s are compatible with the AirPort Extreme card. The later Power Mac G5s (models: M9590LL/A, M9591LL/A, M9592LL/A) are not. Instead, these models require a special combo AirPort/Bluetooth card which must be installed by an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP).
