What is the current generation Airport Extreme?

My current Airport Extreme is less than a year old and is the fourth generation model. However, I keep seeing "Airport Extreme 5th generation" online and I am not sure if there is a 5th generation available now.

Shipments of the 5th Generation AirPort Extreme started in June 2011.

  • I have the 4th Generation Airport Extreme, is it time to upgrade?

I'm currently using the 4th Generation Airport Extreme (Model A1354) and was wondering if it was time to upgrade, especially with the new 6th(?) generation being relased June 12th?
I know this maybe a simple question but any help would be appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Andrew

In order to take advantage of the new 802.11ac performance on the new AirPort Extreme, you will have to buy one or more new MacBook Air laptops.
That is the only computer offered by Apple that can utilize the 802.11ac capabilities of the new AirPort Extreme.
Apple indicates that new Mac Book Pros with 802.11ac capability will be introduced at a later time.
You will receive no real performance benefit with the new AirPort Extreme using your current wireless devices. The only exception might be a bit better signal reception with the new "tower" antenna design.
The bottom line for most users.....unless you plan to add new 802.11ac computer hardware in the near future, there is probably no reason to buy a new 802.11ac router now.....unless you really like the styling.
Curiously, the new AirPort Extrme still uses older 2.0 USB technology, while a number of other manufacturers offer faster 3.0 USB products.

  • What is the difference between airport extreme generations?

I have the opporunity to purchase a mc340lla (Airport Extreme) and I'm unable to find it on this Apple site. Can anyone help?

It's a 4th Generation model that was originally introduced in Oct 2009 and discontinued in June 2011.
The current 5th Generation model uses new chipsets for the wireless radios and improved, additional antennas for better range.
Whether or not most folks would notice a real difference in day to day use between Gen 4 and Gen 5 is open to question.
If you can pick up the MC340 for $80-90 or less, it might be worth a look.
But, you can get this same model as a refurbished unit...that will look brand new.....from Apple for $129 with a new warranty.
And, if you want the current Generation 5 model, you can pick that up for $149.

  • Can the latest generation Airport Extreme support Comcast 100mbps internet service?

I have an Asus router now that I am having problems with. I would like to replace it with the latest Airport Extreme. I am currently getting speeds of 126mbps down and 24 up. Would I be able to get those speeds on the latest Airport Extreme.
If it can I will get it. What're your thoughts?
    Thanks!

I don' think that anyone here has a crystal ball that is good enough to be able to tell you how a given product will work on your network in your home.
I use a Zoom modem with an AirPort Extreme with 100 Mbps service from the ISP.
If I run an Internet connection test using a popular site like www.speedtest.net and connect my Mac directly to one of the Ethernet ports on the AirPort Extreme, I typically get 100-105 Mbps.
If I switch to wireless, and my Mac is within 10-20 feet of the AirPort Extreme in the same room, I will get about 95 Mbps on average
If I move the Mac to the next room, so the signal must pass through a wall to reach the Mac, I get about 80 Mbps on average
If I move the Mac a few more rooms away, the speed drops to about 50 Mbps
    You get the idea
If I run an option-click check with the WiFi icon at the top of the screen, and the Mac is near the AirPort Extreme, you can see the result below.
That might be an impressive number to look at, but the fact remains that the speed of the Internet connection will only be as fast as the ISP can deliver.
Your results will likely be different, and you won't know what they will be until you try things out in your home.  Buy from Apple and you have 14 days to return the product for a refund or credit.

  • What's the range of airport extreme can the signal reach my basement my house is about 2500 sq ft

Whats the range on the airport extreme is the signal strong enough to reach the basement of a 2500 sq ft home.  Thx

The maximum free-space range is 150 feet; slightly more in the 5 GHz band. However, walls, floors, other electronic devices, microwave ovens, etc. will attenuate the signal reducing the range for actual use.
I live in a 2300 SF townhome and wireless works fine from an AEBS on the second floor. I use an Airport Express on the first floor in Extend mode that is configured for my Slingplayer. Apple TV2 does not seem to have any problems. It's also on the bottom floor.
This is a six year old home so the walls are not made of plaster. Plaster on metal lath can prevent AEBS signals from being detected outside of the room where it's located.

  • What is the difference between airport extreme and airport express, can i use an airport extreme to extend internet and also the airport express ?

CAN YOU TELL ME THE REAL USE ?

Oh wow, now I wished I would have researched this more, We currently have the airport extreme and wanted a backup drive and was referred to get the time capsule. So i guess i need to choose which one to use.

  • How is the current (2014) AirPort Extreme different from the model a year ago (spring 2013)?

What are the major differences between the 2 models? Appreciate your response. Thanks.

The primary difference, other than styling, is that the newer version offer 802.11ac wireless capability, which will deliver wireless speeds that are 2-3 times faster than the previous version.
But, users will not realize this speed improvement unless they also have a newer 802.11ac capable Mac computer.
There are 2 additional WiFi antennas in the newer version, located up at the top of the tower, so the new model delivers better speed and range for current wireless devices that may not be 802.11ac capable.
The newer version runs much cooler than the previous versions, which should extend product life.
Pretty much a no brainer to opt for the newer model unless there are still a few $75 deals on the older version....and you do not plan to buy new computers for a few more years.
If you go for the new model, you must use a Mac running Lion (10.7.5) or higher, or an iPad or iPhone to set up the product and make any configuration changes.
Apple tends to introduce new models in June of most years, so if you are not in a rush, you might want to wait and avoid the potential frustration of buying now and then finding that a new "improved" version appears in the next month or two.

  • What is the difference between airport extreme and express

What is the difference between them? I am not familar with apple products other then the iphone and the ipad

Extreme has three LAN ports; Express has one (both have one WAN port)
Extreme has Gigabit Ethernet, Express 100-BaseT - this affects activities such as performing large file transfers or streaming
Extreme's USB port can be used with an external hard disk, Express can only be used for a USB printer
Only the Express can stream iTunes music.
The Express is about $80 cheaper than the Extreme.

  • Does the newest, the fifth generation AirPort Extreme support Guest Network?

I cannot get an option to set up Guest Network to display.

I'm guessing that you are referring to AirPort Utiity 6.0 which came with the latest Lion Update. You can download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion , which has much more functionality. You can keep both 5.6 and 6.0 on your Mac (You cannot delete 6.0).
I suppose that you could try to configure the AirPort as a second router on your network, but then you will have two devices both trying to hand out IP addresses. That usually causes conflicts on a network.
if AirPort Utility allows you to do this, you will also have what is known as a Double NAT on the network, which will slow down communications and possibly not allow devices on the network to communicate correctly. I may or may not work.
I don't recommend this, but if you want to try it with AirPort Utility 5.6.....here is how:
Open AirPort Utiility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Internet tab, then click the Internet Connection tab
Change the settting from the correct "Off (Bridge Mode)" to the incorrect "Share a public IP address"

  • How can I force my Second Generation Airport Extreme to use 2.4GHz when extending the network of my Fifth Generation Airport Extreme?

    Hi,
Would be great if anyone can help.  I have setup my Second Generation Airport Extreme to extend the network of the Fifth Generation Airport Extreme.  The 2nd generation Airport extreme seems to automatically get set to use 5GHz vs 2.4GHz.  I would like to force it to use 2.4GHz so my older devices can connect to it.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mike.

Enable the option to assign a different name to the 5 GHz network on your 5th Gen AirPort Extreme.
Then, the 2nd Gen Extreme will only "see" the 2.4 GHz network, and extend that signal.
If you are not sure how to do this, post back to tell us what operating system you are using on your computer so we will know what version of AirPort Utility you are using....so we can provide the correct steps for the setup.

  • Difference 4th and 5th generation AirPort Extreme

    Hello
what exactly is the difference between the 4th and the 5th generation AirPort Extreme?

I understand. You really have two options at this point:
Add another Express near the stereo and configure it to "join" the wireless network, assuming that you have the "mid-point" Express configured to "Extend a wireless network".
Connect your single AirPort Express using an Ethernet connection. If you cannot run the EThrnet cable, take a look at a pair of Ethernet power line adatpers to send the Ethernet signal over the AC power lines in your home.

  • What is the newest Model or Generation Airport Extreme?

What is the newest Model or Generation Airport Extreme? And would the Time Capusle have all the same fuctions as an Airport Extreme with the added benefits of storage?

What is the newest Model or Generation Airport Extreme?
    5th Generation  AirPort Extreme
And would the Time Capusle have all the same fuctions as an Airport Extreme with the added benefits of storage?
Yes. Newest Time Capsules are 4th Generation models available in 2 TB and 3 TB versions.
Just so Apple can confuse things though, the AirPort Extreme in the 4th Generation Time Capsule is the same AirPort Extreme as the 5th Generation Extreme.

  • Can I boost the DSL signal using my 1st Generation Airport Extreme or Express? Also, can I get wireless printing?

Can I boost the DSL signal using my 1st Generation Airport Extreme or Express?
I just moved into a house where they have ATT DSL and it is really slow in my room.  I am hoping that I don't have to purchase a booster and I might be able to use my Airport Extreme or Express to boost it.  I don't think they want my Extreme as their router, though.  They are PC.
I am also hoping that I can set up a wireless printing situation in my room using the Express or Extreme.
I am running 10.4.11 on my old MacBook Pro laptop, 10.5.something on my old desktop (MacMini).
Thanks for any help ahead of time,

Can I boost the DSL signal using my 1st Generation Airport Extreme or Express?

Unfortunately, this won't work especially if you want the connection between the routers to be wireless. The two are just not compatible for configuring an extended network. However, it could work if you can have them interconnected by wire. In that case, you could configure them into a roaming network.
I don't think they want my Extreme as their router, though.  They are PC.
This shouldn't be an issue as the AirPorts support wireless clients regardless of which operating system they are running.

  • Time to upgrade my 1st Generation Airport Extreme?

As the title says, thinking it's time to upgrade my 1st Generation Airport Extreme (Draft 'n') to the latest 5th generation model, just to be clear my existing Extreme is the current form factor white square design and not the very earlier dome version (although I did have one of those too once upon a time).
Here's my thinking/question, current Extreme has been a great trusty workhorse since new, reliable and generally rock solid performance, however a recent upgrade to a super fast 'Fibre To The Home' internet connection is making me think it's time for an upgrade to solve low speed/throughput issues with the current Extreme setup.
With my current iMac networked to the wall mounted Fibre (1000 Mbps ethernet) router via Cat 5e I'm getting amazing speeds on speedtest.net (i.e 760 Mbps down and 228 Mbps up), however when wirelessly connected to the Extreme with my iPhone 4S and MacBook (Black) I get the following speedtest.net results:
iPhone 4S: 17 Mbps down and 34 Mbps up
Macbook: 24 Mbps down and 63 Mbps up
(Interesting that the uploads seem to have better connection/throughput than the downloads, normally the opposite applies?)
I understand that the current Extreme is somewhat crippled as it features 100 Mbps Ethernet ports (latest models have 1000 Mbps), however the wireless speeds still seem way below what I would expect (i.e. nearer 100 Mbps), both the 4S and Macbook are within feet of the Extreme.
The Extreme is set to 'n' only 2.4 Ghz, bridge mode (letting the wall mounted Fibre router do all the routing/DHCP work) via Ethernet Cat5 from one of the 4 Ethernet ports on the wall mounted Fibre router to the Extreme WAN port, tried various channels, 1, 6 and 11. Current Firmware 7.6.1 on the extreme. I have also disabled the wireless connection/network on the Fibre router to avoid any possible interference with the Airport network.
So my main question is, should I look to upgrade to the latest Extreme model, will this improve the wireless speeds, based on my setup what wireless speeds could/should I expect with a new Extreme, or am I missing/overlooking something within the current setup?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks John, this certainly helped.
    Speedtest.net results:
2.5 Ghz n: 19 Mbps down and 53 Mbps up
5.0 Ghz n: 28 Mbps down and 58 Mbps up
It also came to light that I wasn't using the best of the speedtest.net servers to do my testing, by accident I selected a different one (Newbury UK - Vodafone) to the one I had been using (Milton Keynes UK) and the Newbury server indicated download speeds of around 50 Mbps, which I feel much happier with.
Seriously considering a new Extreme for the simultaneous 'n' networks, 1000 Mbps ports and no doubt improved components, antenna etc.
Will report back if/when set up.
    Thanks again.
