Trax and kirt are correct. I'm pretty good with technology, being an engineer and all, and I can tell you for a fact that this 'swoosh' sound (triggered by a successfully sent SMS) can NOT be disabled from ANY menu in iOS 5. The ONLY way to disable it is to flip the silent switch on the left hand side of the phone. This is extremely annoying for some people (like trax, kirt, and myself). For what we pay for Apple products and, in particular, this phone, we simply didn't expect to have to deal with such annoyances. That's why we're Mac users. Please fix this bug.
I feel like I shouldn't have to say this but it bears repeating: turning off message sounds from the 'sounds' menu does not fix his problem. It still emits the swoosh noise. Whoever suggested this clearly didn't try it because it obviously doesn't work. Who posts a solution to a problem without knowing for a fact that their solution is correct? I find that response condescending because he writer is assuming we're not smart enough to have tried it. In reality, it's vice versa.

What is the deal with the zooming in with the dragging of the playhead??? I'm sure I can adjust/turn off this feature in the preferences. How could i use this to benefit me? How would it? It seems so spastically erratic!

I use it quite a bit for zooming in and out (by dragging up and down) but you have to be careful you don't move left or right when doing this as it then becomes a bit unpredictable as you say...
If you just want to use the playhead for dragging left and right (and if you can't find a pref to turn it off) you'll just have to be careful to drag only in the horizontal axis and not up or down..

What's the deal with the video format?

Hello! What is the deal with the video format? Does it mean I have to code the videos for 640*480 ? It won't accept any other size? What size do I need to select for widescreen format?
With Quicktime pro I've been able to encode videos with a very nice resolution and small size, then try to synch them to the ipod touch and then the error, it can't be played. I use the .mov format, I like it more but if I have to use .mp4 then I'll use it.

What's the deal with the CC menubar panel?

What's the deal with the CC menubar panel? The tab to the apps are gone -- looks like it wants me to update the panel itself rather than list my installed apps. I've been on CC for about a month, is this common? Thankfully I can still open all apps normally, but the internet seems to think the "CC Way" is a horror show.
Do you guys have trouble after updating the updater? All this talk of running "the cleaner" (a mafia term?) and reinstalling everything with each version bump is kinda scary. It could be that people only post online when things go wrong, and 95% of people update just fine. But since I'm new I guess I'd want some reassurance before committing to a night of Cleaning and Reinstalling...
I'm one of those people who think app updates very 12 to 18 months was just fine (and stable). Would it be harmful to ignore updates for a few months? Lets see, I have a healing brush, smart objects, a blob tool, pretty good 3D in AE, ID seems to handle type pretty well… there's really no reason to update every month is there?

What's the deal with the battery?

I just bought a new video iPod a few days ago. I've loaded all of my songs onto it, and loaded a few videos on it also. I've FULLY charged it, and I watched about 15 minutes of video on it. After that video is done, it says the battery is at about 1/3rd full. 1/3rd battery life after 15 minutes of video, then I play a few songs, and the battery meter goes up to about half full. Then after a few songs I play another video and the battery meter immediately goes to 0% full. What in the world is the deal with this thing? Is it accurate? If it is, can this really be that I can only watch about 20 minutes of video on it until the battery is completely dead? Anyone else having this issue?

First you really need to try charging your ipod to full then run it empty then charge it again, do this three or four times and it will sync your meter to your ipod. Please note though that the meter is a guide and just a guide, it does not always acuratly display the correct charge of your battery. I have noticed when I have my video on, my meter is lower then when I am playing songs. But I have found that mine is fairly acurate when I first turn it on before I play songs or do anything. I always check it that way so I have a good idea of where I am at. It takes out all the variables, but I have had my nano in the red and gotten 5 hours out of it... so go figure... my video when it hits red, has maybe 1 hr tops.. depending on what I am doing, if it is video... like 20 mins or less.

What's the Deal with the iPhone Backup? Where Does It Back Up to?

When my iPhone does its backup thing (and gee I wish I could turn that off permanently but nothing seems to stick in the preferences... have to stop it manually in iTunes each time... anyway...), where does the backup reside? It takes a couple of hours to do a backup, so I'd think there was a lot of actual content being moved to my Mac. But there's 14GB of content on my iPhone and my hard drive isn't losing 14GB of storage space... not even 100MB from what I can tell!
So what's really happening during a "backup"? If I wipe the content off my iPhone with a restore, where will the backup content come from?

On a Mac, the iPhone's backup file is stored at Home > Library > Application Support > MobileSync > Backup.
The iPhone's backup stores data such as most iPhone settings, SMS messages, email account settings, notes, recent calls, call favorites, 3rd party applications or some 3rd party applications and any data created/stored by a 3rd party application, and photos captured by your iPhone.
The backup does not store iTunes content, contact information, bookmarks, or photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone. This data should be available on your computer.
Basically the iPhone's backup stores all data not included with the sync process.
When performing a Restore with iTunes, the options are to restore your iPhone from your iPhone's backup, or as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.
If you constantly cancel the backup process, this may cause the backup to become corrupt and if you never allow it to finish, you won't be able to restore what should be saved with the backup.
How many 3rd party applications do you have installed and regularly use that create/store data?
And do you have a number of photos that were captured by your iPhone available that have not been imported by your computer and then erased from your iPhone as with any other digital camera?
If so and you regularly capture more photos, these are included with the backup.

To help maximize your battery life you can turn off cellular data when not using it, turning your brightness all the way down, also setting your auto lock to 1 minute so if you forget to lock your phone. You could also turn notifications off so that your screen wont go on when you get a notification.

Can anyone explain this to me? (Please note that I am a review addict, and look at reviews before buying anything so I don't make a regretful choice. One of the things that sealed my decision on the Zen was the 8.3 from CNET.)
I've been deciding to upgrade from the Zen's EP-480 set for a few weeks now, and it's a tossup between the Aurvana and the EP-630.
Problem is, everywhere seems to report that the Aurvana is very average. Looking at customer reviews on retail sites and media critics, they all barely rate the Aurvana above average. Looking in the same sources at the EP-630, it has a close to perfect score from various ones.
Now, here's what blows my mind. I stumble upon Creative's European site, and the reception for the Aurvana is better than the EP-630 set. Other countries seem to love the Aurvana more than the EP-630, while the US does not. See for yourself:

What is the deal with the latest release of iTunes?

Ever since I updated iTunes a few months ago it has basically made itself totally useless. It takes forever to start the program up - it takes minutes and mintues of spinning rainbows to search for music in my library that before was instantly recallable... The library is obviously parsing the search as soon as you start typing - so if I type in Se... by the time I type in the second E it's searching for every song in my library that starts with S, then it's searching for every song that starts with Se... etc... then I get half through the word and the stupid GUI freezes and I get to watch spinning rainbows for 45 seconds, then the library displays 250 songs that I wasn't looking for.... How about if the program just WAITS until I am done typing in the name of the song or artist or album and hit ENTER to initiate the search? I'm pretty sure I don't sit around going - I want to listen to that one song but I don't remember what it's called - except - didn't it start with Se? I'll just do a search for that... It's STUPID!
The latest issue I've had with it is it won't connect my iPod at all! It just randomly stopped recognizing my iPod. When I DO get the ipod to show up in the sidebar - after force quitting the program 3 times, restarting the computer (welcome to WIndows OSX), and rebooting the iPod and reconnecting everything - the program spins rainbows for... going on like 15 minutes now...

I assumed you were familiar with search in itunes 10.
However as you are clearly not then the way to search for An Artist is to select filter by artist in the search box
then type in the artist name and it will match that artist or any artist with that as part of the name
For Example I searched for Eric Clapton just using Eric. It found all The Eric Clapton songs but also songs by Jesse Frederick/Bennett Salvay. If I typed in the Ful name of Eric Clapton it just returned Eric clapton

What is with the home button acting all janky all the time. Sometimes it acts as tho it was never pushed and then sometimes it acts at tho it was pushed twice.

open a stock iOS app (Weather, Stocks, Clock, etc.). Once the app is open, press your iPhone’s power button until the ‘slide to power off’ screen appears. From that screen, press and hold your Home button until iOS force quits the stock app you have open.
This will recalibrate your home button.

What's the deal with the 'stacks' icons in the dock?

I'm still getting used to stacks in the dock.
What I can't understand is why I have to look at icons that have nothing to do with the item?
My Applications folder stack shows the Address Book item on top and my Utilities folder stack shows the Activity Monitor icon on top.
I "get" it... this is a stack of items and that's the item on top - alphabetically based.
But it's ugly and not what I want. Since I'm always going to see the same icon, looking at the address book makes little sense. I'd prefer to see the Application folder icon or something more generic in its place.
Any good solutions or options?

I hope that Apple's designers wouldn't snort at this criticism. This is clearly a valid "usability" issue. What possible purpose could it serve to have the icon in the dock be determined by the alphabetical order of the contents of the folder (or any of the other sorting options for that matter). I found myself having to remember the order of my folders in the stacks area in order to figure out which to select. That's just wrong. The sorting is a valid purpose for when you click on the stack and it expands, but not for the icon in the dock. And showing just a sliver of the 2nd document or folder? What possible purpose can that serve? Even with icon size and magnification at max, you can't see enough of the folder content to be of any use. This is very unlike Apple, which spends so much effort getting every element of the GUI just right. I can only hope that this was just something that was done early in the design just to show that it could be done, but they just never got around to fixing it before the software was released. It is really annoying!
I've done the empty folder workaround. It's better, but still pretty pathetic.

What is the deal with the 3D rotation fail in illustrator?

i was wondering if two different shapes could rotate using the same center of rotation..
It ended that the only way to do it is that both objects have to share the same extruded properties....
If i create both objects with independs extrusion effects, i cant rotate them with a common center point of rotation.
Well if anyone knows how please tell me because i can't start believing that such thing dont exist in Illustrator if it has a 3D feature..
The other thing thats frustrating me is that u can't rotate the shapes using a simple keyboard shortcut grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....

JET's right when he says that Auntie Illie's 3D is utterly lame.
Read it again. I said it's utterly lame in this regard. (limited to a single 3D coordinate system). I do not consider it useless, as I have explained here at length many times.
As I said, the uniqueness of Dimensions (and 3D Effect) is the way it renders as vector paths. There is a plethora of affordable 3D modelers (including free open-source ones). Some offer vector-based output. But none that I have seen render the vector objects the way Dimensions / 3D Effect does: as a set of paths more similar to what you would draw. Contone shaded areas are much like normal expanded Blends. So post-manipulation of the expanded results is usually more practical than with that of other vector-rendering 3D modelers which render shading as a mesh of facets.
Also, show me another entirely vector based 3D modeler which renders like this, and as easily:
...Which makes it all the more a pity that the existing functionality of Dimensions--re having multiple different objects/parameters reside in the same coordinate space--has been so sorely debilitated as 3D Effect. Consider how much more useful it would be if only one could, for example, revolve that red tube a little farther than the green one. That's the needed functionality.
And I'm not even saying that the whole "live effect" thng is useless:
I'm just saying that the loss of being alble to individually-orient multiple 3D objects in the same space is far too high a sacrifice to make for it.
And it's not that you can't build useful multi-object scenes with it; but you can't do it in a single 3D coordinate system:
Objects like the chess pieces, afer being expanded and then fully broken apart in Flash can make 3D Effect valuable to the discerning Flash user. The same could be said of Dimensions, were its full (already existing) functionality still available and updated for compatibility.
3D Effect also suffers from its hideous interface, especially the numerical rotation fields, which need to correspond to the axes (as their icons suggest), not relative to line-of-sight. And it needs to be able to produce pipeline extrusion objects--again things which were lost with the discontinuance of Dimensions.
Of those regularly here, I'm probably the least "married" to Adobe of all. So frankly, it would suit me fine to use something like Dimensions from a source other than Adobe. Not every graphics program you use has to come from Adobe. That mindset is central to the much larger problem. (And I'm as sick as anyone of Adobe's grossly overpriced incremental upgrades, lethargic product improvement, the more restrictive upgrade pricing policy, and the infernal pushing of software vendors toward a subscription-based license model.) So show me something other than Dimensions that works like Dimensions, and I'll gladly relegate 3D Effect to the never-used feature trash heap.
But no, the marketplace (therefore Adobe) has trashed Dimensions. Evidently, it just never sold enough. My argument is that an updated Dimensions--if marketed effectively--would likely be more successful in today's marketplace (re Flash, etc.) than when it was first introduced. It would also be a refreshing sign of life in this stagnating vector illustration segment.
