What is the default file that's in the downloads folder on a fresh install of OSX?

I deleted the .pdf file that's in the Downloads folder when you first install OSX.
Is there anyway to get this file back?

The file is the "About Downloads" pdf file, that's preset in the Downloads folder when you first install the OS.
Can this be replaced if you accidentally delete it?

  • How to delete hidden files that I uploaded to Download folder

I read posts on delete but am concerned I'll mess something up - I have never used Terminal and am hoping there's an easier way.
I recently switched from Windows to Mac for my development computer.
I wanted to edit an .htaccess file for a web site I downloaded it to the downloads folder and of course, because it has a dot as the first character it turns out I can delete it. I was able to edit the htaccess file with Fetch, saved it to a web dev folder and upload it. But I still have an .htaccess file in my Download folder that I would like to remove.
What is the easiest way to do this?
    Thank you!

The easiest way is to tell Finder to show hidden files. Open Terminal and copy this to Terminal window:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE && killall Finder
Then, go to Downloads folder and delete the file. Finally, return to Terminal and copy the same text but replacing TRUE for FALSE.
Alternatively, if you know the name of the file, you can move to Downloads folder in Terminal with the cd command and use the rm command to delete the file, but it's dangerous. Don't do it unless you are sure what you are doing, and make a backup

  • What is the maximum number of 263 byte text files that can fit in a folder?

what is the maximum number of 263 byte text files that can fit in a folder - on a windows 2000 operating system?
I created a java program that creates these text files.
It was set to loop 30,000 times.
It created a total of 21874 html files before throwing a null exception.
I tried to copy and paste 10 more html files manually and it said not enough disk space.
however, I made a New Folder in that same folder and I was able to successfully paste the folders in
    there.
    That's interesting.
It appears there is a size limit in each folder, BUT I can make another folder within that and successfully paste more html files in there
Does anyone know the rules governing this feature.
    Stephen

Whatever the answer is, it has nothing to do with Java programming. Microsoft might know, though, and that's where you should look.

  • I have attempted to download the free trial of Acrobat XI, the application file appears to be in the download folder however the setup progress bar was hanging so I cancelled.  Now I don't know what to do, please advise

Please advise how I install the free trial of Adobe Acrobat XI Pro.  I started the download process and can see the files in the Downloads folder however the setup screen was hanging so I cancelled.  Now I don't know what to do.  It goes back to the original download screen

    Thanks Pat
I have now brought my daughters laptop into work as she has CS6 so I thought it would be easier to set up her laptop to the work network, set up an email account for her and attempt to email my 270 certificates that way. How wrong was I.  First of all Acrobat X Pro would not open so I did a reinstall.  Still wouldnt open so I had to find a patch to fix it.  I can now open it.  When I open Word 2013 and check the options, the PDFMaker is in the active section but when I open word the Adobe toolbar is not appearing. I've opened Acrobat X Pro and have discovered that it's missing a plugin - Convert2AdobePdf (DistillerPI.api) so I'm now in the process to find out how to install this plugin.  I have seen through this site that there was a problem with Word 2013 and the Adobe Toolbar which is exactly my new problem.  I have to say, after 3 days of trying to perform what you would think is a very simple function, I'm ready to just convert 270 individual pdf's and email them individually, I would have had the job done by now !

  • I am a new mac user and I switch to mac due to the graphics that it brings. I do website in pc and I heard iweb is the best.NOW i heard that iweb will be discontinue. so what is the best application there for website using MAC OSX lion?

I am a new mac user and I switch to mac due to the graphics that it brings. I do website in pc and I heard iweb is the best.NOW i heard that iweb will be discontinue. so what is the best application there for website using MAC OSX lion?

It is now confirmed  that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

  • How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done?

How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done? I am trying to create a disc of player highlights for a collegiate coach, and I am using movie files downloaded to my hard drive from a DVD created on a PC.

No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either.  It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected.  VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB.  All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC.  Is that the same?  Thank you for your time and response.

Downloading images used to go automatically to the last folder used to save images, even when reopening Firefox. In just the past few days, possibly coinciding wih the most recent updates, the folder defaults to the 'Downloads' folder. This is most annoying. What happened? Internet Explorer 8.0 did the same thing. This was one of the reasons why I started using Firefox to download all images. I went into Tools>Options and it only lets me set another folder. I dont want to set a specific folder I want it to always go to the last folder used. So what gives?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== possibly when the most recent updates were installed, a few days ago

Thanks jscher 2000. I guess I didn't make it clear. "It restarts with all the addons activated, and resumes with the tabs that were open before closing it." IE, it's running fine now with all the extensions activated. Everything is OK now.
So something in the Firefox code was causing the bad behavior. It's not essential that I find out what the problem was - I'm just curious. And if anybody else has this same problem, it might be nice to have it corrected at the source.

  • How can I save a file in the Downloads folder and automatically have it opened?

Often, I'd like to download a file, save it to my Downlaods folder and have it opened right away.
Currently, you can only decide between the two options "open" or "save to...". There's seemlingly no way Firefox can do both at once.
I know I can download it, open the downloads manager and open it manually. But when working with over a dozen documents a day, that doesn't quite do the trick.
In Chrome, you only have to click twice: Once for downloading and once for opening it from the download bar on the bottom of the screen. You do not have to open a download manager.

Yeah, thanks but that's not what I was trying to ask.
I know that you can save and open a document by performing these three steps:
    1. Confirming to save a file to the Downloads folder
    2. Open the download manager by clicking the temporarily green arrow
    3. Clicking on the downloaded file
What I would like to know is whether or not it is possible to have Firefox open a saved file ''automatically''. At the moment, if I choose to open it automatically, it is only saved to my temp folder.
It would be great though if it was saved to my Downloads folder ''and'' opened with the respective program on my pc. Is there a way to do this?

  • How do I empty all the files in the "Downloads" folder ?

How do I empty all the files in the "Downloads" folder ? Can they all be deleted at once?

PS: when you look into the menu bar commands by mouse, you may note
there are keyboard shortcuts to perform the same tasks; such as they are.
*Edit> Select all* = uses 'Command + A' keys to do this, without mouse/menu.
And, it can be done quickly by keyboard. +(this will select all, for the next step)+
You would have to select the folder to be edited; yet there also are other key
board commands to select items, folders, applications, etc all without a mouse.
Once you choose items in a folder or other location, you can then use a
keyboard command to Move them to the Trash; from there, Empty Trash
with a three-key command; all without use of the mouse.
The keys to *Move to Trash* looks like it is 'Command + Delete'. Some key-
boards have two marked delete keys, so you may have to try both. The
    +small delete key+ has an icon with right-facing x in a box.
The three keys, to *Empty Trash* via keyboard instead of menu bar/mouse
appear to be the combination of 'up-arrow, command, delete.'
Understanding some of the iconography of symbols used to indicate function,
or what keys to use, as indicated by icons instead of words, is not too hard.
There are articles and web pages which show various keyboard shortcuts.
Here's an example, from one of several I've bookmarked over a few years.
This one has images and shows what the key shortcut symbols mean.

However, if you have anything you may want to keep before mass deleting, be
sure to move it into another folder. +re: The docked folders in Leopard+ 10.5 have
one .PDF in each, about each of the purposed folders. I haven't deleted mine yet.
{And I've added another folder into the dock near the Trash for my own alias items
and the original is on the hard disk drive (one user) or could be put into an account
    folder so it would not have permissions or privilege issues with a second account.}
I'd thought about those 'keyboard symbols' after the first posting; but,
had to take an elder parent on several errands that took quite awhile.
PS: there probably are ways to use AppleScript and Automator to handle folder contents.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • What is the "protected_media" folder and why can't I access it?

I was going through File Manager and saw a folder called "protected_media". Trying to open it gives me a "Folder Unavailable: You don't have permission to access this folder" message. Why do I have this folder and why can't I access it?
Also, what is the "misc" folder? Why does it have a folder inside it called "android"? Why can I go Device/misc/android/DCIM/Camera and find copies of everything that is in the Device/camera folder? Can I delete "misc" without messing anything-up?

the misc folder is for android apps and are virtual links to the files.
Do not delete the files in there or they will be gone from both places.

  • What is the opt folder in my hard drive?

What is the opt folder used for in my hard drive? All I know it has some files for GIMP and gutenprint.
Should I leave that folder alone?

Many open-source software projects (like gimp) use the /opt folder. If it's not there, they will create it when you install them.
In a standard unix-like operating system (and darwin, the unix-like foundation of mac os x is no different), the core binaries are installed in /usr/bin or /usr/sbin, and core libraries are installed in /usr/lib, and there are specific directories where the system looks for specific types of information... However there are lots of dependencies amongst this core functionality: more than one binary application can use the same library.
If the user decided to install some additional software, (and usually the admin password is needed to do it, right), the user has authorized the installer to do what it needs to do to get the software installed, even if this means updating one of the libraries to the most recent version. In this case, what happens to all the other software already installed that used the old library? Well... what happens, is none of the old programs work anymore.
The workaround has been to create a separate directory for additional software installs, so that the core functionality in /usr won't be threatened. Many software projects created a directory inside /usr called /usr/local in which they install their components. Other projects use the /opt directory. Others use /opt/local.
This is why, in unix-like operating systems, you find repititions of the same folders in other folders (i.e., there is a /usr/bin and a /usr/local/bin and an /opt/bin). The "bin" is a common name for folders that contain binaries (commands and applications that are executable and built for the specific operating system that they are running under), and "lib" is a common name for folders that contain libraries. You can find "bin" and "lib" folders throughout your system.
One downside to this is that additional programs installed into the "opt" directory could interfere with the ones that are already there, and for this reason, some programs will create their own directory all to themselves and install everything they need there, even if most of it is a copy of libraries that are already present somewhere else on the system--space is less and less of an issue in the age of terrabytes.
If you learn make your own binaries by compiling them from source code (way easier than it sounds, as you usually only have to type "./configure" and wait an hour for it to finish, "make", wait another hour, and then "make install"--really that's all there is to it) then you can control which directories the software uses (whether to use /usr, /opt, or to create a new directory entirely) plus you can run lots of cool free software.
So that's what the opt folder on your hard drive is for.

Downloading a file would normally bring up an option to open the file with the appropriate program or save it - for some reason now it just downloads straight to the download folder. Why? Problem with Firefox or something else? It's very frustrating - sometimes you want the file opened first so it can be discarded or saved to a different location.

Hey. that's great! Thanks for posting back with the outcome.
