What is the .ecore folder?

I ran the command du -h --max-depth=1 / and just saw the folder .ecore. I would like to know what's it for (can't find this anywhere) and, also, which filetype is "s" (with ls -l the archives show srwx------ 1 root root 0 mar 18 22:40 0). Thanks.

No, Garns, I don't use any of those packages. Though, I instaled ecore-cvs for one day(errm okay I,m sorry), can it be a leftover of the installation?
So, if this is the case this leads me to another question: how much leftovers can I have and is there any way to look for it?
Perhaps:
ls -Ra / > 1.txt
pacman -Ql > 2.txt
and then
cat 1.txt 2.txt | sort | uniq -iu
Would something like that work? Thanks again.

  • What is the "protected_media" folder and why can't I access it?

I was going through File Manager and saw a folder called "protected_media". Trying to open it gives me a "Folder Unavailable: You don't have permission to access this folder" message. Why do I have this folder and why can't I access it?
Also, what is the "misc" folder? Why does it have a folder inside it called "android"? Why can I go Device/misc/android/DCIM/Camera and find copies of everything that is in the Device/camera folder? Can I delete "misc" without messing anything-up?

the misc folder is for android apps and are virtual links to the files.
Do not delete the files in there or they will be gone from both places.

  • What is the opt folder in my hard drive?

What is the opt folder used for in my hard drive? All I know it has some files for GIMP and gutenprint.
Should I leave that folder alone?

Many open-source software projects (like gimp) use the /opt folder. If it's not there, they will create it when you install them.
In a standard unix-like operating system (and darwin, the unix-like foundation of mac os x is no different), the core binaries are installed in /usr/bin or /usr/sbin, and core libraries are installed in /usr/lib, and there are specific directories where the system looks for specific types of information... However there are lots of dependencies amongst this core functionality: more than one binary application can use the same library.
If the user decided to install some additional software, (and usually the admin password is needed to do it, right), the user has authorized the installer to do what it needs to do to get the software installed, even if this means updating one of the libraries to the most recent version. In this case, what happens to all the other software already installed that used the old library? Well... what happens, is none of the old programs work anymore.
The workaround has been to create a separate directory for additional software installs, so that the core functionality in /usr won't be threatened. Many software projects created a directory inside /usr called /usr/local in which they install their components. Other projects use the /opt directory. Others use /opt/local.
This is why, in unix-like operating systems, you find repititions of the same folders in other folders (i.e., there is a /usr/bin and a /usr/local/bin and an /opt/bin). The "bin" is a common name for folders that contain binaries (commands and applications that are executable and built for the specific operating system that they are running under), and "lib" is a common name for folders that contain libraries. You can find "bin" and "lib" folders throughout your system.
One downside to this is that additional programs installed into the "opt" directory could interfere with the ones that are already there, and for this reason, some programs will create their own directory all to themselves and install everything they need there, even if most of it is a copy of libraries that are already present somewhere else on the system--space is less and less of an issue in the age of terrabytes.
If you learn make your own binaries by compiling them from source code (way easier than it sounds, as you usually only have to type "./configure" and wait an hour for it to finish, "make", wait another hour, and then "make install"--really that's all there is to it) then you can control which directories the software uses (whether to use /usr, /opt, or to create a new directory entirely) plus you can run lots of cool free software.
So that's what the opt folder on your hard drive is for.

  • Sync Errors - What Are the Correct Folder Permissions?

I've been having problems recently on the PB getting it to successfully sync.
Decided to open the log using Console and see what was happening - all sorts of errors! One seems to relate to permissions, the other to a possible problem at .Mac
It had attempted to create a folder 'Syndication' under '~/Library/Application Support' and couldn't. What should the group be to get this to work properly - clearly it isn't 'staff'!
In the other one it seems that a http 404 error occurs (not found) when trying to retrieve keychains from .Mac - going to keep an eye on this.
    Cheers
    Powermac G5 DP 2.3 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   4.5 GByte RAM

.Mac sync got a lot of problems this week and Apple has disabled it for now. Check www.mac.com and I think you should follow .Mac forum instead of iSync one as this is a .Mac problem (iSync does not handle .Mac sync). People are discussing the issues you experience there.

    What is this for?

  • TS1967 What is the iTunes folder (the enclosing folder)?

Attempting to replace my iTunes library that is not in the upgraded product.  What a pain. Do not understand the directions.

The "enclosing folder" is normally refered to as the parent folder...
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be copied and renamed asiTunes Library.itl to restore the library to an earlier state. Look for a recent .tmp file that is similar in size to the .itl files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. If it has happened repeatedly you may want the earliest such file generated since the last iTunes upgrade.
If applicable, see iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.

  • What's the "Desktop" folder on empty disk partitions there for?

I notice the extra (empty) partitions I've created on my hard drive each have a "Desktop" folder on them.
But when I put something in there, it doesn't appear on the visible Desktop... So what's up with that folder?
With OS9 the visible Desktop was shared by all the mounted disks -- if you had a file on another drive, you could just drag it (its icon) to the Desktop (without copying it).
Seems there are many reasons to definitely not ever partition a hard drive with OSX.

I notice the extra (empty) partitions I've created on my hard drive each have a "Desktop" folder on themAFAIK it is meaningless. You can delete them and I have. Or, save your files outside of the desktop folder.
If you had a file on another drive, you could just drag it (its icon) to the Desktop (without copying it).If you wish to copy the file drag it. If you wish to move it then command-drag it.

  • Burn Folder - What Is The Burn Folder's Proper Location?

    Good morning.
This morning when I started up the computer, upon reaching the Desktop, the Burn Folder [ http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/7752/screencapturetb4.png ] was located on the Desktop.
A family member who isn't here right now was using the computer last night, so I can't ask them where they dragged the Burn Folder from.
I would like to put the Burn Folder back in its proper location, but I don't know where that is.
Could someone please find where it's located in their computer, and tell me.
    Thanks.
    17" iMac G4, 1GHz PowerPC, 768mb RAM Mac OS X (10.4.7)

You keep referring to "the" Burn Folder as if it is a unique object with a required location. You (or your family member) can create as many burn folders as you want, and they can be wherever you put them. If this particular burn folder is on the Desktop, it may well have been created there. You can move it wherever you want it (including the trash, if you and your family are finished with it)

  • What is the "private" folder?

Can I delete anything from it? It has folders called "var" and "tmp".

i just found some problem with the "PRIVATE" folder.
i have tried empty my trash many times but there are some files still there, when I check the file's info
    it is located in "/private/tmp/174/C/.Trashes"
is it because the deleted file is under my bootcamp?
please advice how can i delete these files.
    many thanks!!

  • What's the searchplugins folder and why doesn't its content show up in the Manage Plugins menu?

Today on my first Search bar attempt, my search page got redirected from Google to www.bigseekpro.com, which I had never heard of. I checked my Plugins and Addons, it didn't show up there. But my home page had also been hijacked, from the tabs I normally go to, to only go to this new page. I did find in C:\uerdatada\appdata\roaming\mozilla\firefox\profiles\cawypqyo.default a new folder created a few moments before, \searchplugins, and in this a file search.xml, which contained xml commands to redirect the search activity.
These look suspicious: the first command sets xmlsn:os to "http://a9.com", which I can't seem to find anything on with whois or tracert; bigseekpro.com itself traces to its registry at godaddy.com, but that's about all I'm finding.
If this is a legitimate place for Firefox to look for a plugin, why doesn't the Firefox plugin manager tell me it found something there? And why couldn't the Help articles on "Search not going where you want it to" also tell me about this?
Any ideas? Am I right to be highly suspicious of this behavior?

Search engine plugins are kept separate from Add-ons (Extensions, Plugins, Appearance). Search plugins, both the default search engines supplied with Firefox and those that you install will be shown in the Search Bar (see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Search_Bar Search Bar]).
The folder '''''searchplugins''''' in your Profile folder ('''the path you mentioned''') is for search engines '''''added by you or something that you have installed'''''. You can remove any found in the Profile folder in the '''''searchplugins''''' sub-folder. The items there '''''may''''' make/have made changes to other search functions in Firefox.
*Are searches from your '''Location Bar''' going to the place and/or search engine you expect?
*Are searches from your '''Search Bar''' going to the place and/or search engine you expect?
'''''The default search engines included with Firefox''''' are not in that folder in your Profile, but are located in a folder by the same name in the Programs folder where Firefox itself is installed. See [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory Finding the Installation directory]

  • What is the 'src' folder really meant for ?

Is it customary to put stuff that is not AS3 code inside the projects "src" folder ? And if it is, why do folders that do not contain any source code look like AS3 code packages ?
I would much prefer to put stuff that is not code in their own specific folder (icons, xml files, etc.) to keep my project cleaner. But, if I do so, those files will not be copied to the bin-debug and bin-release-temp folder upon compilation. What is your take on this ?

I guess you're right but the package icons lead me to believe only code was expected in there.
The other annoyance is that if you create a subfolder which points to another location on disk (which FlashBuilder allows you to do), its content will not be copied to bin-debug or bin-release-temp. This makes it hard to symlink content (such as assets) accross projects. My workaround for this issue has been to create OS symlinks instead.

  • What is the documents folder??

I was using an app, I don't remember which one ... Maybe notes plus or goodreader ... oh it may have been pages possibly? Anyway, I went to export a file and one of the options was "ipad documents folder." What does that mean!?!?! Thanks!

If you are absolutely sure you have finished with the files, drag them to the trash and empty it.
If you delete something you need you may have to recapture video or even start your project again depending on what you have deleted in error.
Even if you have to restart a project it will be a lot quicker because you will probably remember most of the things that you originally spent ages thinking about.
