What is the exclamation point???

After dowloading 3 new CD's, everything was erased from my iPod. It still shows the music in iTunes however there is an exclamation point beside ALL of the songs saved before today. I've read lots saying it means it has lost the information but how do we retrieve everything? HELP?!?!?!

The ! means that iTunes can't find the actual music files. Try:
iTunes: Finding lost media and downloads
If not successfully you will have to redwonlaod or remiport the music files.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

what does the exclamtion point mean next to a song that is unchecked?

If you hover over the exclamation mark (or you may need to click on it, I can't remeber), it should tell you. Usually, it means that the original file (for that song) cannot be found, either because it has been moved, renamed or deleted.

  • What does the exclamation point next to a podcast mean?

Is there a way to diagnois the reason behind the exclamation point?

I subscribe to a few podcasts. One is a daily popular 15 minute BBC Radio 4 show called The Archers. If I'm away on holiday I ask a friend to switch on my computer every few days and leave it on for a few hours, expecting the downloads to come through. I set up itunes to open automatically. But after a few days the programme stopped downloading. On return from holiday the last week's programmes were still available, but anything older had gone. Apparently itunes stops downloading podcasts after a few programmes have not been listened to. How can I over-ride this problem? I emailed the BBC but they seem to think it's an itunes issue. I would love itunes to give me the option of whether I want it to continue or stop downloading podcasts I haven't listened to for a while. Alternatively, does anyone know if Windows media player performs any better in this regard? (I've not tried it yet. Thanks

  • What does the exclamation point mean?

When I try to view photos in iPhoto '08 and increase their size, all I see is a graphic exclamation point.  What does that mean?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

Yes, it's likely that the iPod's hard drive is damaged and is in need of replacement.

  • I have the exclamation point symbol next to podcasts that don't meet the criteria for said symbol based on the FAQ

When I'm looking through and trying to manage my Podcast library within iTunes, I see the exclamation point symbol next to several. My first issue is the fact that there are many that have this symbol that I only wanted a few episodes and not a subscription. How can I fix this problem?
My second issue is that for many of the podcasts with the exclamation point symbol, they don't fit the criteria based on what's in the Symbol FAQ, which states that there are too many unplayed episodes so new episodes won't download. For the podcasts in question, this is not the case, as all episodes have been listened to. What can be done to fix this problem?
My third issue is the fact that when I DO play a podcast on my iPod Touch (4th Gen), I don't use the app (can't stand it), then go to sync it with the computer, these episodes are shown as having already been played PRIOR to the actual syncing happening. So, when I go to do the ACTUAL sync, the play count is off. Right now, I have to manually reset the play count so that the episodes that I listened to on my iPod Touch only show one play in the library count, not two or in some cases, three. How can I fix this problem?
I have the most current version of iTunes and use Windows 7 64-bit.
    Thanks for ANY help!

Most of the songs in my iTunes library has been tagged with the exclamation point and will not allow me to place those songs on a new Nano iPod I bought...why?  This is music I have purchased in the past.

You can use the disk diagnostic tool built into the iPod's firmware to test the health of it's Hard Drive.  See this post from another forum member turingtest2 on how to do this as well as what the resulting numbers mean.

  • What does an exclamation point next to a song file mean?

I've been using iTunes for several months now and just today noticed that I have exclamation points next to a number of songs. When I go into my iTunes Music folder and try to find those files, they're not there.
Yet I haven't deleted any of these files.
What gives? I've got over 33,000 songs and don't want this to become a reocurring problem.
I did repair permissions with iTunes open just before I noticed the exclamation points b/c I was having a problem with copying new audio files into iTunes and it was suggested here that this would be a fix.
Could that have caused the exclamation point problem?
Either way, if someone can tell me how to fix this so that all of the exclamation points go away and the files reappear in my finder, I'd appreciate it.

Do you have an External Hard Drive connected to your iMac?
If you have some other storage device connected, you may have Saved these songs with the "!" next to them on THAT storage device.
If you DO have an external drive connected, try turning it on (or reconnect it) and bring up iTunes again, they will play if they were Saved to that external device.
Once you have identified if this is what has happened, you'll want to go back into iTunes Preferences and make sure it's set to Save to your 'Macintosh HD'(or whatever you call your primary Hard Drive).

  • Why do I receive the exclamation point when I just change the album name? File goes missing?

I keep all of my itunes media on an attached network hard drive.  Had no problems for months but over the past 45 days I've noticed that material has started to go missing that I know I did not delete.  I have found no malware on my system.
I read a script to tell me all the files that had an exclamation point.  There were some TV shows (an entire season gone missing) and some CDs.
I just did a test and imported a CD.  I then clicked "get info" and changed the name of the album.  Immediately I received the exclamation point and when I tried to find the original file it is gone.  I have no idea where the file has gone to.  I've tried searching, looking around to find it, and I can't.
Why is itunes having this behavior?  How is the file being deleted?  Any other thoughts or ideas of what I should do to stop this?
I've also sent a support request to the hard drive mfg (lacie) but I'm not sure I'll get much help there.
    Thanks.

More info:  I just ran the same test two ways.  One, I had some files on my desktop, run a script to move these files to the "automatically add to itunes" folder, the files move just fine to my external hard drive and to itunes.  The file plays just fine and the "get info" tab shows it is playing the file from the external hard drive where the file was moved to (not copied).  But, as soon as I change the artist name or the album, the file goes missing and I get the exclamation point.
I ran the same test by putting the files on my desktop, but instead of moving the file to the "automatically add to itunes folder" I just double clicked the file to play it.  I let itunes add a copy and organize my folders.  This time, the file would have been copied (not physically moved) and I see itunes is playing the new copied version.  This time, when I try to change the artist name or album, I have no problems.
I've never encountered this before.  Any info?  Thanks.

  • Can't restore iPod after seeing the "Exclamation point folder icon"

My iPod showed me the "Exclamation point folder icon" out of the blue... i tried resetting, restoring (upgraded to 7.1 in the process) but when i connect the ipod to my computer it still shows me the icon, then the Apple sign, then "Do not disconnect" (while charging) and then the ipod itself starts clicking...
any help would be GREATLY appreciated!! very furstrated over here...

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

then it displays the Release Version and the Delta Functionality. Which can be downloaded to a word document if required.
And also check the release notes of ECC 6.0 in service.sap.com.
When you are upgrading from 4.6C to ECC6
Nothing major, follow the same process you'd follow if you were updating PI service packs in R/3 or enhancing data sources. Empty queues in RSA7 and lbwq. Also empty setup tables through lbwg as the upgrade doesn't like it if these tables contain data. This is all on the R/3 side (although you empty RSA7 by running each delta TWICE in BW).
To transfer queues from lbwq to rsa7, execute jobs through LO cockpit (lbwe).
Some of your data sources could also be using sm13 instead of lbwq, so do check it out as well.
For installing ECC 6.0 you required a solution manager key. With out solution manager key you cannot install ECC6.0.
For ECC 6.0 is called net weaver component here you have ABAP+JAVA stack.
    ECC6.0 supports UNCODE.
For installing 4.6 you don't require solution manager key. It only having ABAP stack.
    4.6C supports NONUNICODE.

Moving a library: Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its sub-folders and files) intact to the other drive.  Hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) and open iTunes.  At the prompt to create or choose a library choose the copied iTunes folder.
