Hi Phani,
It also depends on the type of file you are transfering. If have used the XML file around 1GB and the performance is very low. But we used the Database schema to load the XML data and the performance had increased very well.
I never tried the large flat files load around 1GB.

I usually download my favourite shows from itunes but now I have to restrict what I download, What's the file size for an average 43ish minute show? I'm sure it says somewhere but I'm having a blind day! Thanks for any help in advance

Now that you bring it up, the one I looked at earlier was not downloaded from the iTunes store. I looked again and looked specifically for store downloads. One show is 40 min, 3 sec and 440.4 MB. Another is 50 min, 36 sec and 560.5 MB. A third is 44 min, 29 sec and 502.8 MB. All of these are 128 kbps sized at 640X480.

What are the file name(s) for CS6 scratch data on Mac?

I see people saying the file (or is it multiple files?) is kept in the HD root. I don't see anything there (I only have one drive) that looks relevant to Photoshop, even when I view invisible files. Anyone know where the file is, and what it's named? Is it invisible?
The reason I ask is that I want to exclude it from my ongoing Time Machine backups. I'm slowly learning the various Adobe folders that I need to exclude manually. (AutoRecover, Application Support/Adobe... in fact, the bazillion CS6 folders within Applications, since I'll just restore them from Creative Cloud if I have a failure.)
Sometimes Time Machine has been doing a big backup for reasons unknown, and I think the recent installation ogf CS6 may be the culprit.

What influences the file size of Lightroom catalogue?

Just a general question really...
I often read in various forums of LR users who have tens of thousands of images in their catalogue, and yet the catalogue file itself is relatively small (e.g. "I've got 100,000+ images in my catalogue, and it's 350MB). I personally have around 11,700 images in my catalogue at present, and the catalogue file is fast approaching the 8GB size (currently at around 7.69GB). To be clear, I'm talking specifically about the lrcat file here, not any associated previews. I have a resonable number of virtual copies (say around 100), and have added quite a bit of metadata (hundreds, if not thousands of keywords, GPS coordinates, captions, star ratings, flags and so on). I also carry out quite a few local adjustments to many - although by no means close to all - of my photos in the develop module and have some pretty large editing histories as a result. I also have a modest number of publishing services running, and multiple collections including a number of smart collections.
This is not a problem for me, and I have plenty of space for lrcat file to grow into so I'm certainly not losing sleep. I'm just intrigued as to why my catalogue file is (possibly) larger than it should be.

If you want to post (or send me) a link to the lrcat file, I'd take a look at it for you, and give you a break-down what's consuming all the bytes. But it might be fun to learn how to do that yourself (e.g. using SQL). I use SQLiteSpy, but other people have their favorites.. (or you can use a command-line client if you prefer..). One way: just run "drop table "{table-name}" on each table then look at filesize (do this to a copy, not the real thing).
Anyway, it's hard to imagine keywords and captions etc. taking much of the space, since even if you had 1000 10-character words of text metadata per photo average that still only adds up to 117MB, which isn't a substantial portion of that 8G you're seeing occupied.
Anyway, if you've painted the heck out of most of them and not cleared dev history, that'll do it - that's where I'd put my money too...
One thing to consider to keep file-size down:

The photoshop program is a couple of years old and my files are in a desktop out of use for a couple years. I brought the desktop to a technician, asking him to extract the photos. If you using Windows you can use the control panel Folder options or from Windows File explorer menu tools>Folder options view tab to change what Microsoft hide on you. Have windows display extension. Apple hide information from users also.

Hi! I was just wondering how can I decrease the sizes of the interface in Photoshop? (e.g. the tool bar). My screen resolution is 1366 x 768, and most of the tools in Photoshop is occupying a bigger space in my screen. I feel that I can paint better if they are smaller. Do you have any idea how can I decrease the size of this interface?

I would collapse and expand the toolbar windows by using the double arrow icon?
Doing this will almost give you your full screen?
Or you can hit 'Tab' and it hides your tools when you don't need them?

This has nothing to do with the size. A full PS install (32bit and 64bit version together plus Bridge plus AME) is about 2 GB at most. Whatever issues you have are utterly unrelated to this therefore. Since you did not provide any system information, we can't advise specifically, but you may wanna have a look at this:

Where can I find the file size of an image?

In PS CS4, when you hover the mouse over an image, one that I have that is sized as a 5x7 at 200 ppi, it shows 933 kb.
When I open the file, and look at the lower left of the screen, it shows a "Document Size" of 4.01 mb.
The correct size is 933kb, because it's from a D200 10MP Raw file, converted into jpg, then downsized to the 5x7 at 200 ppi. Default sizes are basically 13x19 at 200 pp (which shows up as a Document Size of 28.7 mb).
What is a "Document Size" (I think it's the actual dimension area, not pixel size), and why, when the image is open, can I not see the actual file size of 933k anywhere?

You mean in Windows Explorer window? Photoshop will not show you such information.

No you can not. You may plan to save it as jpg with any amount of compression that will greatly influenced the file size and Photoshop is not that much intelligent yet to guess your plans :-)

Why does dragging an imported video into a project reduce the file size by half?

I used a Canon Vixia HV40 to import 1 hour of HD video filmed using 24F and cina mode. My import and project properties were as follows:widescreen (16x9, 24F, cinema, import size = full, original size.
The specifications for the imported file are as follows/:
Size: 22.12GB
Dimensons: 1920 x 1080
Codec: Apple Intermediate Codec, Linear PCM
Color Profile: HD(1-1-1)
Audio Channels: 2
Total Bit Rate: 47,113
When I drag the imported file into a new project, the resulting .mov file has the following specifications:
Size: 9.67GB (approx half the size)
Dimensions 1920 x 1080 (same)
Codec: H.264, AAC (different)
Color Profile: HS(1-1-1) (same)
Audio Channels: 2 (same)
Total Bit Rate: 20,607 (approx half)
What causes the file size reduction and bit rate reduction? Is it a result of the different codec? Is there any corresponding loss of video quality that results from the conversion?

Maximum image quality and file size are not the same thing, for a start.

When you view a photo in iPhoto it's a composite of the original and the decisions recorded, and applied live as you view.
Oh, I always thought iPhoto makes a copy of the orginial and modfies that ...
If you want to use that photo for something then you have to export it. This make a new file with your photo in it. When you export you have a lot of options - including ones that will make the filesize bigger than the original. This User Tip

Ah, that is cool. That solves my problem.
If you use drag and drop from the iPhoto Window that's a form of exporting too -but you have no options there. You get the iPhoto Preview. That's a 'handy-good-enough-for-most-things version of the shot. If you want more options use the export command.
That's what I tripped over. (I used the email feature from within iPhoto for a quick sharing ...)

Reducing File Size in Photoshop

Hello,
I had a question on reducing the image size after editing in Photoshop.
After doing my changes in Lightroom, I typically make edits in Photoshop and then do some final touchups back in Lightroom. The RAW file from my camera is approximately 24 MB. After making my edits in PS, the TIFF file it produces (with all layers flattened) is in the 60 MB range.
My question is, if before sending in back to LR, I change the image size in PS say to 12 MB or so, am I basically creating a lossy jpg file? Meaning -- by reducing that TIFF file size down to 12 MB am I throwing out important information such that when I go back to LR I am losing information and won't have as much control as the 60MB TIFF file?
I am trying to avoid having to keep upwards of 80MB per image (due to the RAW + edited file). I don't want to lose imporant information so I will if I have to, but would prefer not.

If you reduce the file size in Photoshop you reduce the pixel dimension of the photo which means that you throw information away - independantly if you save as JPG or as TIFF or PSD.
That means that the reduction in file size is a reduction in image quality.
If you want to print the image you need a certain resolution (dpi) for the print - typically 300 dpi.
If you want to make a print of let's say 8" x 10" at 300 dpi you need a pixel dimension of 2400 x 3000 pixels which results in a file size of roughly 22 MB (flattened file).
If you have reduced your file to 12 MB you cannot make a print of 8 x 10 at 300 dpi without upsampling first, i.e. Photoshop (or Lr) have to "invent" the missing pixels.
So reducing the file size is simply not an option - unless you use your images exclusively for the web where you don't need large file sizes.
If you edit your Raw files in Photoshop you have to live with large file sizes.
The only way to avoid that is: Do edit in Photoshop only if you absolutely cannot do it in Lr.
