  • What does the folder with a question mark mean?

When I power on my black Macbook a white screen appears with a folder with a question mark flashing. what does the folder with a question mark mean? I just replaced the hard drive. When I put the install disc in the cd drive makes a very loud whirring noise then eventually the disc pops back out. Any ideas?

    You will need to reinstall:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • What is the folder structure for iTunes for Ver. 11.0.5

What is the folder structure for iTunes for Ver. 11.0.5 since I have iTunes on an external drive at the moment but want to move it back to the HD temporary so as to back it up to TM, the problem is that it seems that the files are some what disarranged and I'm not sure where and how iTune reads them.

Time Machine will back up connected external drives as long as they are not on the exclude list.
Connect the drive with your iTunes library > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options > if the external drive with the iTunes library is listed, select it and click the minus sign then run the Time Machine backup

  • What are the folder/file names of PSE12 catalogs?

I'm curious about what files/folders are created by PSE 12 when setting up the original catalog and then each subsequent catalog.  Also, what files/folders are created for the PSE backup and is there a default folder/file structure tied to the catalog - or is it wholely separate?

    LinusF wrote:
I "know" about the Program Data ....catalogs/[my catalog] location.  Is there any file necessary to the catalog which is NOT there?
The catalog folders contain everything that is necessary for the organizer. The only thing you might consider is to take a note of your preferences settings. The backup folders also contain everything necessary; the only difference is that it may take some time to rebuild the 'cache' files automatically after the restore.
Put another way, I am moving many, many files off my current C: drive in order to install an SSD.  I want to make super sure that I catch everything PSE may have stashed here and there and get it out to "safety" before reformatting this disk.  Thanks for all the help you've been along the line.
The backup and restore process is highly recommended in your situation, but generally it's not the only way to 'move' catalogs and media libraries. Let's say you have all your media files under a single master folder such as 'My photos', you can use the Folder view (left panel) to drag and drop on another external or internal drive. Your catalog is then updated for the new location.
    - advantage : you can check the transfer immediately
    - drawback : you must be patient...
That's for transferring your media library, now you can also move your catalog folder, either manually or by using the catalog manager 'move' option.
So, the backup/restore process is not the only way.
If you want to keep only your Elements program on the SSD, I would not store the catalogs there, I'd store the catalogs in custom location in your old reformatted internal drive. You'll need an external drive for the backup. Alternatively, you could move library and catalogs to the external drive, and back to the old reformatted drive as explained above. You might even use the external drive for both purposes...

  • What is the folder hierarchy in iTunes under Mtn Lion?

I'm especially interested to find out whether all the different types of media (movies, music, books, podcasts, etc.) are supposed to be in the iTunes Media folder.  Some of mine are in the Music folder and some are outside it.  I even have a folder for Movies and another for Home Movies.
Exactly where in the folder hierarchy inside the iTunes folder inside Music are all these types of folders supposed to be?

    Hi elfpix,
Sounds like you have some questions about iTunes folder organization. I have an article that should be able to explains some of the details of iTunes file organization to you, as well as help you find some files you are looking for:

  • HT3964 What is the folder with the finder and then a question mark?

Help me i dont know what to do !White screen with a folder that has a finder icon and then a ? Mark

Depending on the exact cause, you need to either reselect the Mac OS 9 or X system as the startup disk(only applicable if it starts up on its own), or use a disk repair program on the internal drive, or install an OS on the internal drive, or replace the internal drive.

  • What is the folder Donoclock?

I was transferring some photos via DiskAid, when I noticed a folder called DonoClock in the Camera Roll area.  In iPhone Explorer, it shows up under Media, DCIM.
    What is it?
I Googled and, unlike most such searches, found very little.  I'm wondering which app put it there and whether it's OK to delete.
    Looking forward to any feedback!

This is within the program DiskAid, showing us what's on the iPhone!  I did find a preference setting for show hidden files, folders, but it was unchecked.  Checking it didn't make a difference.
    I came across Donoclock again.
    Anyone know what it is?

  • What is the folder that iWeb creates in my local computer to store web designs???

I have to save problems wich occur every time I make updates on my website with the help of iWeb.
For that reason my webhost asked me to use FileZilla and I have to move files folders from the host I am connected to my computer.
But I need to know where iWeb puts these websites in my computer.
Does anybody know where they are listed??
Your help is very appreciated, Marcel

You would need to publish your website to a folder:
iWeb '09 (3.0.4) you can publish to an FTP Server or a local folder
iWeb '08 you can publish your website to a local folder

  • What is Cookies folder "HSTS.plist"?

I am trying to permanently delete all cookies on Yosemite 10.10.3 and am wondering about the folder "HSTS.plist" under User/Library/Cookies. The folder and contents seem to contain several cookies that reappear after rebooting, despite being deleted.
I have the following questions, if anyone can help:
    1. What Is the folder HSTS.plist?
2 Is the folder safe to delete?
    3. How can I permanently delete it and ALL cookies?
Note that I have repeatedly tried to delete all cookies by selecting Safari/Preferences/Privacy - Remove All Website Data AND Clear History and Website Data. On my IOS 8 devices I have also selected Settings/Safari/Clear History and Website Data and Cookies/Always Block.
On Adobe Flash Player Settings Manager, I have also deselected Allow Third-Party Content To Store Data On Your Computer, maximized privacy settings for all options, and ensured that there are no Flash Player websites and/cookies showing on my computer.

On my system, HSTS.plist appears to contain a list of hosts that have requested secure connections under the HTTP Strict Transport Security protocol (see the WIkipedia entry for "HSTS", for example).  It does not contain any data related to my browsing.  I would guess that (a) it's safe to delete it, but (b) it will just get recreated or redownloaded the next time you use Safari.
In Terminal, you can use the "plutil" command to examine the contents of the file, e.g.
    plutil -convert xml1 -o - HSTS.plist
will show a more-or-less readable version.

I'm trying to copy music from my PC to itunes. I open itunes, go to 'file', go to 'add folder to library', select the folder and nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

    Hello there, gleab.
The following Knowledge Base article reviews the ways to import content into iTunes:
Adding music and other content to iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1473
Also keep in mind which formats can be added:
You can add audio files that are in AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, or Audible.com (.aa) format. If you have unprotected WMA content, iTunes for Windows can convert these files to one of these formats.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder, what happens if I delete the photo in Iphoto ? Will the original file in the folder be deleted too?

When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder to iphoto, what happens if:
    1. I delete that photo in iphoto? will the original file in the folder be deleted too ?
    2.  when importing, does the hard disk store 2 versions of the photo, hence occupying additional space in the harddisk?

1 - no  --  iPhoto only manages fiel within the iPhoto library - it does not ever do anything with files outside the library
2 - No idea what you are asking - by default (and strongly recommended) iPhoto copies the original to the iPhoto library and you delete the source file outside the iPhoto library - iPhoto alwasy has at least two versions of every photo and some times three - it always have the original, a thumbnail and once a photo is modified a preview - this is not optional - if it is not what you want then iPhoto is not the correct progrtam to be using for phopto management

I am trying to open iTunes on my mac. But a box pops up saying "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder". Anyone know what that means? I've had my computer 2 years and its never had a problem opening it

I've already right-clicked on the application, clicked "get info", and changed it so all people listed in the "Sharing & Permissions" section have the "read & write" privilage.
The error message is referring to your iTunes library, not your iTunes application.
You need to check and fix the permissions of the iTunes folder in your iTunes library. This is by default located in your "Music" folder.
Select the folder Music > iTunes  in the Finder, right click on it or Ctrl Click and click "Get Info". At the bottom of the contextual window thatwill  pop up, disclose the Sharing and Permissions brick, change your status from Read only to Read & Write. You may need to click the padlock icon to make changes.

  • I backed up my old core 2 duo imac and and was trying to transfer files to my new 2011 imac and when i go to oppen a folder from what i transferred it says "The folder "Music" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents."?

I backed up my old core 2 duo imac and and was trying to transfer files to my new 2011 imac and when i go to oppen a folder from what i transferred it says "The folder “Music” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents".  Why cant i access the files from my old mac?  I tried the time machine and that isnt working either.  I have files that I need to use on my new mac, all my old programs and such.  I thought they said it was easy to get your files from one mac to another.  Please help.

Your account names are probably different on the two Macs. If you know the UNIX command line, open a terminal window and run:
    $ id
You should see a line that starts with something like this:
    uid=501(your_user_id_here)
now check the owner of the folder you copied over:
    $ ls -ld Music
    drwx------+ 8 some_user_id_here  staff  272 May 14 16:08 Music
Do the IDs match? If not, you could change the ownership. Say your id is "johnsmith"
    $ chown -R johnsmith Music
Now try and access it with iTunes.
