You are very welcome...an iPad 1 is still a good machine, but the memory is small and the processor is slow...I have one that is still in daily use but it is definitely limited.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.

Hey Hhs12, If your inquiring as to wether Apple is going to release an iOS 7 for the iPod 4-- not going to happen. iOS 7 requires 512MB of RAM, only the iPod 5 has the required 512MB of RAM and there is no way to increase the RAM on an iPod. As Stedman1 stated, iOS 6.1.6 is the highest possible for the iPod 4. Hope this helps. Cheers.

No one can predict the life span of a particular device, there are too many variables to consider. Such as, how well it is treated, how it is charged, used in a case, exposure to heat and cold, and on and on. If you treat it well, it should last for years.
iPod Touch has a 1 year warrenty, but with the AppleCare Protection Plan, you can extend it to 2 years. Even out-of -warrenty, its still useful. And please follow through what Ralph Landry1 said. -

The 3GS is not listed in the supported list for iOS7. Unless Apple comes out with a major bug fix, 6.1.3 will likely be the last update for it.

Yes, due to Incomplete Software Update on your iPhone your Device is now in Recovery Mode and you cannot take a Backup now. But if you have taken a backup earlier then you can Restore that backup on your iPhone after you Reset your iPhone to Factory Settings.
