I wouldn't mess around with a measly 128 MB upgrade (assuming that's what you have now). Instead of merely doubling the RAM, maximize it with a 512 MB module.

Yes. You need 2011 or later in order to mirror as it requires the newer processor. The alternative is airparrot, which does it via software.

Would there be some other problem that would sudden make all my speed take a nose dive? I have 8.5 gigs of RAM... Please advise!

First open Console in Applications>Utilities, see if you have reapeating messages.
How much Free Space do you have on the Hard Drive?
At this point I think you should get Applejack...

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

I will like to use this G5 as the means to learn most of the good things Apple has to offer. Any assistance or advice will be appreciated. I was told by a friend that I can't run Tiger... so what would be the must current OS I can run ?
I bought a copy of OS 10 a few yrs ago and never got a chance to installed it
I was wanted to install I photo and wanted to use my DVD burner to back up my photos etc...My 9.1 OS has I DVD but I don't think that allows me to burn DVD'S for pics. I put blank DVD (TDK) DVD-R and the tray just opened and rejected
the blank after a minute of spinning

I'd just go down to your local Apple dealer and purchase some more RAM for your computer and then you will be able to run Mac OS X fine. I'd try to get at least a 512 MB chip - it shouldn't be too expensive.

If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data before upgrading. Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

You can upgrade from 10.4 straight to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 should run under10.6. See this list for compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/ You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/ I recently upgraded an older MacBook (model 1,1) straight from 10.4 to 10.6.

The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available at this time from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list. The App Store which is required to download 10.7 Lion is part of the 10.6.6 update.
Once you are at 10.6.8 Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store. The price is $19.99.

Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

I know this is an old thread, but Leopard has been installed on Power Mac G3's - only those with a G4 upgrade and the addition of a lot of kexts from developer versions of Leopard and XPostFacto. This is no easy task by far, but it has been done to prove that Leopard can run on Macs without AGP graphics like the Blue and White G3.
