What is the latest OS I can put on my iBook? Mine has OS X 10.3.9. It is 600 MHZ Power PC G3. It won't connect to my home wifi, so I need a later OS.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I wouldn't mess around with a measly 128 MB upgrade (assuming that's what you have now). Instead of merely doubling the RAM, maximize it with a 512 MB module.

I'd just go down to your local Apple dealer and purchase some more RAM for your computer and then you will be able to run Mac OS X fine. I'd try to get at least a 512 MB chip - it shouldn't be too expensive.

See if your Mac can run Lion > OS X Lion - Technical Specifications
You can purchase Lion here > OS X Lion (10.7) - Apple Store (U.S.)
After the purchase Apple will send you an email notification with a redemption code you can use at the App Store to downlaod Lion.
BEFORE you do that, see if your Mac can Mavericks > OS X Mavericks: System Requirements
If so, you don't need to purchase Lion.

Depends. There were two version of the MBP that shipped in 2006 with different max RAM. The quickest way to see which is yours is to use System Profiler to get your Mac's "Model Identifier."
Do "About this Mac" from the Apple menu and, in the resulting window, click "More Info..." That launches System Profler for you.
The answer is in the first screen of Profiler that comes up--"Hardware Overview." Note the second line in this example:
If the Model Identifier says "MacBookPro1,X" you are limited to 2G RAM. Period.
If the Model Identifier says "MacBookPro2,X" you can install two, 2G modules for an installed total of 4G RAM, but the logic board can only access 3.2G of it. That becomes your "max RAM.

Would there be some other problem that would sudden make all my speed take a nose dive? I have 8.5 gigs of RAM... Please advise!

First open Console in Applications>Utilities, see if you have reapeating messages.
How much Free Space do you have on the Hard Drive?
At this point I think you should get Applejack...

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

I just want to know what's the latest OS I can upgrade this computer without investing too much money or any at all. My next purchase will be a Mac Pro Quad-core. I will like to use this G5 as the means to learn most of the good things Apple has to offer. Any assistance or advice will be appreciated. Back up your data before upgrading. Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

You can upgrade from 10.4 straight to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 should run under10.6. See this list for compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/ You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available at this time from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list. The App Store which is required to download 10.7 Lion is part of the 10.6.6 update.

Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

I know this is an old thread, but Leopard has been installed on Power Mac G3's - only those with a G4 upgrade and the addition of a lot of kexts from developer versions of Leopard and XPostFacto. This is no easy task by far, but it has been done to prove that Leopard can run on Macs without AGP graphics like the Blue and White G3. I'd like to sit it next to the original 60Gig drive that came with the Mac.

Theoretically the maximum size of an array will be Integer.MAX_VALUE,
practically it all depends on how much memory you gave to your VM and how
much of that has already been allocated to other objects ...
