What is the Macintosh HD/private/ folder?

Hi all, lots of strange stings are happening on my Mac lately, but this may not be related.
However this folder:
I have never seen before. Can anyone elaborate on what it is, and if it's nothing to worry about - or is

There are a number of important folders used by the system that are normally hidden, and the /private folder is one of them. In your case, that folder has now become visible. This does not in itself affect its function.
There are two ways that a normally-hidden item can become visible-
1) A global change in Finder's behavior ("show all files"), such that all hidden items are now visible.
2) A specific change only to the item in question, such that it it loses its "hidden" flag and is now visible even when Finder is behaving normally.
Your screenshot of the top level of Macintosh HD shows a "normal-appearing" /private folder, and doesn't show a number of  other essential items that are always there but normally hidden.  I therefore think in this case we are dealing with the second issue above.  This "sometimes happens" for unclear reasons.
By example, one of my own bootable disks normally looks like this in Finder's list view:
One can make all hidden items visible to Finder , as per the first case above, by using a Terminal command or by using a 3rd-party utility program. If I do this, I see:
There are many previously hidden items now visible, and they all have a dim, ghosted look, including /private.
If I reverse that global change in Finder, and instead remove the specific  "hidden" flag only on the /private folder as per the second case,  I instead see this:
Of the normally invisible items, only the /private folder is now visible, and it is not "ghosted" - it appears normal, as did yours. So your situation evidently corresponds to this second case, where the Finder is functioning normally but the /private folder has lost its hidden flag. As mentioned, the reason is usually unclear.
You should be able to restore the invisibility of the /private folder with this Terminal command:
sudo chflags hidden /private
However as long as you remember not to go poking around inside the /private folder, it's also OK  just to leave it alone.

    2. and the "tell websites not to track me" under Safari - Preference - Privacy.

That box should prevent websites using trackers to log your movements on the Web to benefit advertisers. I have no idea if it does.
Safari can keep your browsing history private. When you turn on private browsing, Safari doesn’t remember the pages you visit, your search history, or your AutoFill information, so your partner cannot see where you have been, but you must also remember to also turn off acceptance of cookies.
In all other respects Private Browsing is not as private as you might think:

    http://www.insanely-great.com/news.php?id=9054
and then Apple's own advice from here: http://www.apple.com/pro/tips/privacy_safari.html
"Note that the Private Browsing option does not prevent Safari from collecting cookies (the preference files automatically generated by many websites). The Reset Safari option clears all cookies. If you want to delete only certain ones, choose Preferences from the Safari menu, click the Security tab, and then click Show Cookies. You can select and delete individual cookies from the list that appears. Careful, though — if you’re a frequent web user, this list can be very, very long."
which is itself incomplete, the relevant part being 'If you want to delete only certain ones.
To that end it is useful to have Safari Cookies installed, which is the only cookie manager available for Safari:
    http://sweetpproductions.com/safaricookies/
which automatically deletes all cookies not marked as 'favourites' when closing Safari. It does the same for Flash Cookies, but they are subject for themselves:
    From this website:
    http://machacks.tv/2009/01/27/flushapp-flash-cookie-removal-tool-for-os-x/
For those who do not know about Flash cookies, more properly referred to as Local Shared Objects (LSO), they operate in a similar way to regular browser cookies but are stored outside the purview of your browser, meaning you cannot delete them from within your browser, whether Safari, Firefox, Opera or any other. Typically they are issued from sites or 3rd party sites that contain Adobe Flash content. Since virtually all internet advertising is  delivered in Flash, Google/Doudleclick and all other internet advertising companies are sure to be tracking your browsing behavior with Flash cookies. These companies can see you traverse the Internet as you come upon the plethora of sites that contain their embedded advertising. Check out the Wikipedia entry here.
In Mac OS X they are stored in the following location:
    /User’s Home Folder/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/#SharedObjects
The settings for the Flash cookies are stored in:
    /User’s Home Folder/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/sys
In OS X Local Shared Objects, or Flash Cookies, are appended with a .sol suffix. Flush deletes all the Flash cookies (.sol) and their settings.
Flush can be downloaded from that page.
If you want to retain certain Flash cookies but not others, the excellent add-on for Safari called SafariCookies now includes a setting for automatically deleting flash cookies you don't want to retain, when Safari is shut down, in the same as it deals with ordinary cookies:
    http://www.sweetpproductions.com/safaricookies/index.htm
which not only does that but much more equally useful stuff!
This article covers the issue in more depth:
    http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/08/you-deleted-your-cookies-think-again/
Flash cookies are also known as 'Zombie Cookies' and are used by a number of firms, including Hulu, MTV, and Myspace. Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at the internet security firm Sophos, told BBC News that the source of the trouble was Adobe Flash itself, which he called "one of the weirdest programs on the planet".
"I think it's highly unlikely that these large companies have abused Flash cookies - which are different from browser cookies - with malicious intent," he said.
"I think it's much more likely that the vast majority of users are simply oblivious to the bizarre way in which Adobe allows them to configure the software."

    And a more recent article:

    – tags, web bugs, pixels and beacons that are included on web pages in order to get an idea of your online behavior.
Ghostery tracks the trackers and gives you a roll-call of the ad networks, behavioral data providers, web publishers, and other companies interested in your activity.
    http://www.ghostery.com/about
This provides an extension to Safari (also available for other browsers) that shows you what data tracking is active on each web page you visit, and enables you to block them.

  • What does the icon of a folder with a question mark inside mean?

After an overnight power outage I tried to turn on my iMac this morning, but all I got was clicking sounds and a gray full screen with the icon of a folder with a question mark inside it, blinking. (There's no tool bar that appears anywhere). What does that mean?
I've tried unplugging the system and waiting a while before attempting another boot. Same screen.
I recently (a month ago) upgraded to Snow Leopard from my original OS X software. Never had this sort of a problem before. The iMac was purchased around 2005 or 2006. Intel Dual Core processor.
Thanks for any help on this.

Thanks, Paul, for the prompt reply.Obviously, your answer isn't what I wanted to hear, but feared. When I get home tonight I'll try finding the install disk and booting from that. Fortunately, I still have a MacBook Pro that is running fine.  Incidentally, I have a Western Digital external Hard Drive that has very little, if anything on it. But since I can't open anything on the iMac, I guess I'll have to see if the install disk works before I try to figure out IF I can use that WD-External drive temporarily rather than replace the HD on the iMac. Any clues on what a replacement drive and labor runs for that sort of iMac repair?

    Hi,
I came accross the terms private API and Public API ?
what are these APIs and what is the difference between them??
    Thanks and Regards,
    Soham

    Soham,
Publicly Callable Business Process APIs are the list of supported and published APIs. Direct calls to any other routines are not supported, unless explicitly specified, because API validation and logic steps will be bypassed. Many other packages include procedures and functions, which may be called from the API code itself.

  • What is the Previous ITunes Libraries folder for

    Hi,
I have the above in MyMusic folder where all my iTunes stuff is?
    What is it for?

Each time you upgrade iTunes the existing library is first moved or copied into this folder and given a timestamp of the date of the upgrade. The libray is then updated to work with the new version.
    Possible uses for the files:
~ Should the upgrade go wrong you can restore the previous library and try again.
~ Should you lose your library for any reason the most recent copy in that folder is a good place to start rebuilding from, though not as good as restoring from a proper backup.
~ Should you decide you want to downgrade you will need access to a previous version as libraries are not backwards compatible.
If you have a decent backup for your *iTunes Library(.itl)* file and no desire to downgrade iTunes then you can safely delete the folder.

  • What is the use of private static method/variable?

    Hi All,
I have read lots of books and tried lots of things but still not very clear on the
    topic above.
When exactly do we HAVE to use private static methods?
private implies its only for class, cannot be accessed outside.
But then static means, it can be accessed giving classname.method.
They seem to be contradicting each other.
Any examples explaining the exact behaviour will be well appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chandra Mohan

Static doesn't really "mean" that the method/field is intended for use outside the class - that is exactly what the access modifier is for.
Static implies that it is for use in relation to the class itself, as opposed to an instance of the class.
One good example of a private static method would be a utility method that is (only) invoked by other (possibly public) static methods; it is not required outside the class (indeed, it might be dangerous to expose the method) but it must be called from another static method so it, in turn, must be static.
    Hope this helps.

  • What is the purpose of private folios

I'm probably being thick, but I don't quite get why you'd publish a 'Private' folio? The docs mention improved performance in Adobe Content Viewer, is this why you'd do it, do the run better when deployed this way?
    Thanks,
    Toby

Thanks Neil, I didn't realise that. So if we want to schedule release of a folio, do we actually have to set it to private, or is that something that goes on in the background when you select that option?
And yes, re: performance, this page - Digital Publishing Suite Help | Publishing folios to the Distribution Service - says:
To publish folios as retail or public, you must sign in to the DPS Dashboard using a DPS Professional or Enterprise account. However, anyone can publish folios as private to improve downloading performance in Adobe Content Viewer on a device.
Or did I misunderstand what it meant?
    Cheers,
    Toby

  • What is the best team project / folder structure on TFS?

I am not sure how accurate is this article below from Microsoft but although most of the structure makes sense as shown in the schema, I dont understand the project structure.
How To: Structure Your Source Control Folders in Team Foundation Server
So basically according to that structure, we have Main, Development and Releases.
Main - is the version to be uploaded on the webserver or published latest version of the app.
Development- is the version to do small changes and bug fixes.
Releases- Brunches for big changes, new features etc.
1- are these correct if anyone implemented it?
2- why under source there is myapp1 and again source, myapp1web etc.? myApp1 is the solution, i guess? but why would I add ClassLibrary under individual projects if it is shared? does it not make more sense to have another folder called "Libraries"
and pack them all shared libraries unde this folder?
"Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it."

    Hi emil_tr,
In the begging of the link, you can see "This content is outdated and is no longer being maintained. It is provided as a courtesy for individuals who are still using these technologies". So you might not refer to this document for source
control with TFS if you use a newer version thant TFS 2005.
The folder structure in a team project is depend on the developer, you can have your own structure if it works for you. The source folder in your second question is not the name of the folder, it's a description for the folder's usage(a
folder contains the sources). You can refer to the links below for more information about TFS branching and merging:

  • What is the difference between a folder, a catalogue and a collection?

When downloading a new batch of photographs, should I create a new catalogue - rather than a folder or collection?
Does this make them easier to find in finder?

    >I am probably being a bit thick. But when I download pictures from my camera, is it better to set up a new catalogue each time?
Depends on your style and your storage space. When I shoot weddings, I set up a separate catalogue for each wedding as I basically never have to combine images and it speeds things up and makes for easy backups. For my landscapes, I just use one large catalog.
Anyway, to answer your original questions:
A catalog is Lightroom's word for "Library" or basically the database that contains references and metadata information on all your images that you are managing in the catalog. Collections are groupings of images defined in the catalog. Basically, they are like sets of related index cards in an old-fashioned library. They do not contain the actual books (images), but just cards referring to books. You can also think of them as playlists in iTunes (actually they are exactly the same thing!). Folders are actual folders (directories in windows-speak) in the directory structure on your harddisk. They contain the actual images. When you move a folder in the folder hierarchy on the pane in LR, the folders actually move on the harddisk. When you move collections around nothing actually happens in the harddisk structure, but simply the catalog (i.e. LR's database file) stores some different metadata.
    >The main thing is that I want life to be simple and when I transfer pix from my us mac onto a memory stick, I want to take home the edited photos.
If you want to do this, make sure the stick is large enough and that you store the images along with the catalog file so you can just drag over one folder that contains both the images and the database. In this case, LR will always be able to find the actual images.

  • What is the lost and found folder on my hd?

there is a folder on my hd that I did not create called "lost and found" and only one document inside that is 3.79 GB called iNode6630939. What is theis file and do I need it?

normally things in lost and found can be deleted.  unix has had a lost and found directory since forever.  if you do a fsck on your drives and a file comes up that is not accounted for, unix puts it in lost and found.  if you are not missing a 3.79 GB file, then delete it.

  • What is the original file /private/etc/hosts ?

Trying to understand I made a bad edit !
    Thanks !

To set it back, it should read like this. At least, this is the content on my Mac.
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1             localhost
    255.255.255.255  broadcasthost
    ::1                      localhost
    fe80::1%lo0        localhost
Don't know if it would make a difference, but the first and fourth sentences ending with "localhost" use a tab character for the space between 127.0.0.1 and fe80::1%lo0. The second and third lines are padded out with space characters.
