What is the max hard drive size in an early 2008 MacBook?

I've got an early 2008 black macbook.  I want to upgrade from a 250gb hard drive to either a 750gb 7200rpm drive or a 1tb 5200rpm drive.  Will either of these work in there?  I don't know if there is a maximum hard drive size/rpm that I can put in there.  Thank you for your help!

I know these posts were a while ago, but I wanted to check in on your 2008 Macbook. I have the same model and want to do the hard drive update. Is your machine still up and running, or have you moved on?
Thank you!

I don't recommend you to install a hard drive bigger than 2 TB if you are going to install Windows in Boot Camp or you may have problems
The largest 2.5" SATA HDDs of 9.5 mm thickness that I am aware of are 1 TB in capacity.  There is a 12.5 mm thick  HDD that will fit some MBPs.  But I have not seen any of larger capacity.
Are there now 2 TB HDDs available for MBPs?    If so, I am interested.
    Ciao.
Both OWC and Crucial have SSDs of about 1 TB capacity.

  • What's the largest hard drive size my 8600 can support?

    hi all,
Years ago,I noticed my 8100 Powermac couldn't support larger hard drives than 2GB so I had to partition. Now I have a 8600 Mac with a 4GB hard with no partition. What's the largest hard drive size my PowerMac 8600 can support?

Here's an 18GB SCSI HD on eBay that says it will work on a PM 8600. http://cgi.ebay.com/18-GB-IBM-SCSI-HARD-DRIVE-Apple-Power-Mac%7CG3%7CG4%7CG5-Wrt y_W0QQitemZ120360935737QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090109?IMSfp=TL090109111005r37358
You could also install an ATA PCI card and probably go larger.

What is the max hard drive for a late 2006 xserve?

    Hi Kappy,
That's not quite true. I don't think anyone has managed to get a 3TB drive working as 3TB on an Xserve yet.. Here is the official compatibility matrix from Apple http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1219
2TB seems to be the limit. Some people have had success with non Apple drives but it's very hit and miss..

  • What is the largest hard drive I can upgrade to for MacBook Pro A1278 Early '11

What is the largest hard drive I can upgrade to for macbook pro A1278 Early 2011?  I have seen 750GB on some websites, but I would like a 1TB  I am looking for SATA 6.0GB, 1TB 7200.  Is this dependant on the physical size of the hard drive? I have seen a height of 15mm and 9.5 mm.  How do I know what will fit??

I have not seen any 7200 rpm 1 TB HDDs.  They all are 5400 rpm.  I would say that this HDD comes closest to your requirements.  Tomorrow, there may be others.

Yesterday, I tried a SEAGATE SSHD but my screen was always a showing a QUESTION MARK (?). It's not the cable because when I put back the old original version, everything works...Any sugestion of brabnding or procédure to upgrade my hard drive?

The largest 2.5" dia SATA drives available are 2 TB in capacity.
Have you tried the Seagate SSHD connected externally to the MBP via USB?  The drive itself may be faulty.

  • What is the maximum hard drive size for Imac 8,2, what is the maximum hard drive size for Imac 8,2

Am wondering what is the maximum hard drive one can put into this computer. I think it's a 3TB but I read somewhere the drive needs a jumper to bring it back to 3mb level cache. Can anyone confirm these details please? I currently have a 320GB drive installed.

    Hi Robbie,
I found no iMac 8,2, do you mean iMac 8,1 ???
There is no practical limit to the size, the biggest ones made will work fine... assuming the all important SATA 3 Gb/s speed, WD drives use a jumper on pins 5&6 to slow it from 6 Gb/s to 3 Gb/s.
    Some drives do it automatically...

And some do not step down properly at all.

  • What is the maximum Hard Drive size that a G3 B/W will recognize

I have a Disk Utility failed Hard Drive in my B/W G3 Power Mac. The Disk Utility was unable to repair it so I guess I will be in the market to purchase a new one. Is there a maximum size hard Drive that a G3 will recognize? I had an 80 GB drive before.
    Power Mac G3 B/W eq w/ Sonnet G4 Proc   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

The Disk Utility was unable to repair it so I guess I will be in the market to purchase a new one.
If your only problem was that Disk Utility was unable to repair it, that means the software pointers in the Directory are messed up pretty bad. That does NOT mean the Drive has failed, and does NOT mean it needs to be replaced. You have two options:
    A) Get a better Disk repair Tool, such as Disk Warrior to apply to the problem. Your directory and all your data may still be saveable. Do NOT install any utilities onto the drive you are trying to save. Run them from a CD or another Drive, if possible.
    B) copy what files you can to another drive and reinitialize your Drive. CAUTION: This will erase everything on the Drive. If you choose this path, I recommend using the Write Zeros option at this point. It will take hours, plan accordingly. It will take many more hours to re-install the Mac OS and your Applications.
If you do not have another Drive, and want to get a bigger one, that is fine, but you should do so with the understanding that your old one may not be dead.

  • What's the Biggest Hard Drive You Can Fit in a Macbook Pro?

I've got MacBook Pro 17' with 750gb HDD, need to upgrade the HDD to 2 or more TB. What is the biggest HDD I can fit my MacBook Pro?
How do I go about cloning my current HDD onto the NEW HDD.
    Thanks.

The GB don't matter. All that matters is the physical size. It can't be higher than 9.5mm. The largest 9.5mm hard drive so far is 750gb.

  • Macbook pro late 2008 max hard drive size

I have a MacBook Pro Late 2008.  I think the max RAM is 8GB but what is the max hard drive size.  It is running Yosemite.  It currently has a 1TB drive.

I solved the heat-issue in Windows Vist32 (tested and worked!)
This should also work in XP, XP64 and VISTA 64 although not tested.
Goto the Nvidia website and download the latest notebook drivers (http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_drivers.html).
Uninstall your old notebook drivers through device-manager and restart.
Now install the Nvidia notebook drivers you just downloaded and restart.
    *NOW THE IMPORTANT PART!!!*
After numerous hours of testing i found out that installing new Nvdia display drivers overwrite some Nvidia chipset drivers. This causes your fans not spinning at all under heavy GPU load.
*THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE BECAUSE TEMPERATURES CAN EASILY PASS 100 degrees celsius.*
Now for the fix in four easy steps!
    1. Under Windows insert your MacOS original install-disc (the one with the bootcamp drivers)
    2. Choose to explore the Bootcamp folder.
    3. Now open the drivers folder and browse to the Nvidia folder.
    4. Now install the package called nvidiachipset. These come in all flavors (XP, XP64, VISTA, VISTA64) choose the correct version for your OS.
After installation a reboot is not even necessary. Start your favorite game and notice the extreme humming of your speeding fans! Should sound like music!
*So remember. Every time you update your graphics drivers A REINSTALL OF THE CHIPSET DRIVERS FOR YOUR UNIBODY MBP MUST BE DONE!! If you don't the fans won't come up under heavy load which will result in a BUSTED GPU!!!*

  • What is the maximum hard drive replacement I can use on my PowerBook g4 867 ghz?

What is the maximum hard drive replacement I can use on my PowerBook g4 867 ghz?

Sorry we are late. This forum is getting less traffic as people upgrade and responses sometime take longer. Everyone here volunteers their time, and I for one was unavailable much of yesterday.
The limiting factor on max drive size is that your PowerBook uses the older PATA drive interface, and the largest PATA 2.5-inch drives available today are about 320 GB.
What I'm reserching is the ATA bus controller in your PowerBook. Some older Macs cannot recognize more than 128GB of PATA hard drive space. However, this archived discussion from 2008:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1413918?start=0&tstart=0
suggests that people are running PowerBooks older than yours and not suffering the 128GB limit.
At this point, I need help with what appears to be a descrepancy between the text of your post and the PowerBook in your profile. A "PowerBook6,2" model identifier returns to the "PowerBook G4 (12-inch DVI)" marketing name with a 1.0Ghz processor; the 12-inch PBG4 with a 867mHz processor shows a model identifier of PowerBook6.1. They show the same hard drive interface but the later on appears to be a sure bet for large hard drive support,

  • Does anyone know the maximum hard drive size for a 2007 Macbook Pro (A1226)?

I have a 2007 Macbook Pro (A1226). Is there a limit to the sized hard drive that can be installed? If so, what is the largest hard drive I can put into it? I have a 500GB HD that I upgraded to from the 320 GB that was in it when I bought it. I'm now trying to install a 1 TB or 750 GB drive, but after cloning with 'Carbon Copy Cloner' and installing it, I get the "?-folder" flashing when I start up. I'm pretty confident in CCC because if I use it to clone to another 500GB HD, it works fine. The problem only occurs when I try to use larger drives. Is 500GB the largest HD I can use in this machine? If so, can anyone point me to a spec sheet so I can be sure the next Macbook I buy can be expanded to suit me.
    Thanks in advance.
    Brian

You said:  "I've never tried the restore function in disk utility. Would that be the same as cloning the drive?
YES!  See the my old instructions below.  What you might try after step 5 is to restart you MBP holding down the Option key.  Select the new HDD icon and see if it boots.  This way you will know that the new HDD is operable.
    Ciao.
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MB
    1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
    2. You will need a HDD enclosure.  One with a USB connection will do.  A 9 pin Firewire is better.
    3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
    4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE.  From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field.  Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'.  Click on the 'Erase' button.
    5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top).  Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination'  field.  Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more.  A Firewire will speed up the transfer.  This will result in both drives having identical information on them.
    6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives.  Start the MBP and you have finished the installation.  The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
    7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.
