What is the minimum processor for editing hd video?

I'd like to edit my hd camcorder video (canon) in the highest resolution.  Which Mac will allow me to do this without painfully slow rendering?

Rendering will always be slow - even with a Mac Pro, just not as slow as with another machine. What you want is the best processor you can afford along with lots of RAM and a good graphics card with dedicated memory.
Mine is a 3.2 GHz mid 2010 iMac with 12 GB RAM and it is considerably faster than my old iMac (2.16 GHz, with the maximum 3 GB RAM), but it is still not blazingly fast - a friend of mine who was the chief engineer at a major TV station told me they have 6 computers going at the same time editing/rendering the footage from the teams on the road because it takes a while......
I've decided to use 720p rather than the 1080p for several reasons: the file sizes for 1080p are unbelievably huge and, on my HDTV, the 720p displays just fine - I tried a test with 1080p and could not discern a difference from where I'm seated (but that is my setup obviously; may not be for you). Using the 720p also makes rendering/editing a lot faster because of the smaller file sizes. So, if you want to stay with 1080, be prepared: better have at least 500 GB of spare hard drive space and wait for the rendering. You're also supposed to have as much free hard drive space as the files you're processing when burning to avoid burn errors. My last one hour project took up more than 100 GB (720p) of various files while working on it.

  • What's the best Mac for editing HD video

I have a 2009 2.66 quad core Power Mac with the RAM maxed out at 16Gb, 1066MHZ DDR3.  The OS is 10.6.8.  I edit using FC 7 pro.   I am editing HD footage from a Canon Vixia HF G10, which uses AVCHD on the camera and imports files to the computer as Apple ProRes 422 1440 x1080.  What I am finding is that final export times of rendered projects take very long.  As an example, a hour and a half edited and rendered timeline takes  8+ hours to export as a QuickTime file using the "current" settings option.  To export directly from FC to a DVD with the same circumstances takes 15+ hours.  I understand that HD has much more data but what can I do to speed this process up?
    Thanks

Sorry, shabak.  I deleted my previous post because I had addressed it to BDAqua in error.
    Here we go again:
You are posting in the Power Mac forum, your post says Power Mac and so does your signature; buy you do NOT have a "Power Mac" nor a "G5".  Clearly you have a Mac Intel machine (Mac Pro) or you couldn't run Snow Leopard 10.6.x on your machine.
The aluminum case of the Mac Pro looks a bit like the G5, except the Mac Pro has two optical drive trays in front, while the G5 has only one.
All Power Macs, including the G5, have Power Mac PPC CPUs, not Intel chips.  The last Power Mac ever was built almost seven years ago, in August of 2006,
In short, if it's a G5 it cannot run 64-bit applications nor can it run Lion or Mountain Lion OS systems.
Don't worry, this mistake is made often by some.  No big deal.
You definitely want to wait for the announced Mac Pro, just hope it does materialize some day.

  • What are the minimum requirements for compiling apps for iOS7?

    Hi, guys.
I currently have a computer with XCode 4.6.3 and Mac OS X (v10.7.5).
Is this enough to compile apps for the AppStore for iOS 7?
What are the minimum requirements for compiling these apps? XCode version or both XCode and OS X versions?
    Thanks in advance,

OK, actually this site has a better explanation of the prerequisites:

  • What's the minimum setting for WL as a proxy server

What's the minimum setting of weblogic.properties for WL as a proxy server?

    Hi Michael,
Recommended setting is the default setting which is 25 .dot.
If your situation is abnormal and you see message delivery throttling state to “4” when the following performance counters are high or if you expect any of you integration
process could have impact on following counters, then you can consider the suggestion by Microsoft. Don’t change the default setting.
    High process memory
    Process memory usage (MB)
    Process memory usage threshold (MB)
You can see these counters under “BizTalk:MessageAgent”
You can gauge these performance counter and its maximum values if have done any regression/performance testing in your test servers. If you have seen these counters having
high values and causing throttling, then you can update the Process memory usage.
Or unexpectedly you’re process high throughput messages in production which is causing these counters to go high and cause throttling, then up can update the Process memory
    usage.
The above two cases where I know my expected process usage (by doing performance testing) or suddenly my production server processing has gone high due to unexpected business
hike (or any reasons) which caused throttling, then do changes to default throttling setting.
Just changing the default setting without actual reason could have adverse effect where you end up allocating
more processing capacities but the actual message processing message usage ever is low means you end up investing in underutilised resources.

  • What's the best app for taking a video on ipad2?

I am a tennis coach and am looking for an app for my iPad2 to do video analysis. I need to be able to video someone doing a serve and then show it to them in slow motion and be able to pause it. What's the best app for this?

Do some research into HTML5 video. Unless the user is using a modern browser with video playback capabilities, they would need to have an app to provide video playback, as well as the codecs for the video file format that you will be serving them. At this point in time, MP4 is the "clear(est)" winner of the online video formats. However not all browsers provide built-in playback. For instance, Firefox currently does not support MP4. Future Firefox builds will rely on whatever video playback the native OS provides. So coming back to your question - no, there's no real way of guaranteeing video playback on the web. You do the best you can and provide links to users where they can download the appropriate codecs and players and call it a day.

  • What is the best system for editing HD in Adobe Premiere CS4?

I’m a Portuguese video enthusiast since the linear editing times. I’ve been reading this forum from some days with special interest, cause I want to build a new HD workstation.
My video productions are with AVCHD material and Adobe CS4 Master Collection. My old workstation – good enough for DV and HDV material – can’t now efficiently handle the original footage and editing work.
So, I plan to build a totally new workstation, probably with the following components:
    – Board: ASUS P6T Deluxe V2
    – CPU: Core i7 975 (3,33 Ghz) Extreme
    – RAM: triple channel 12Gb 2000Mhz OCZ Blade series
    – VGA: Nvidia Quadro CX 1,5Gb DDR3
    – Storage: 4 x Seagate Barracuda ES.2 500Gb 7200 3Gb/s
    – Optical: Plextor BD-R/RE reader/writer
    – Power supply: Corsair HX1000
    – Case: Antec Twelve Hundred
    – OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64bits
Any suggestions? Any changes needed/recommended? Any money spent for nothing?
Another question: how do I configure the 4 Barracuda ES.2? My idea is 2-500Gb drives splited into a Raid 1 array for the OS+Apps and a Raid 0 array for page file and media cache and the other 2-500Gb drives in a Raid 1 array to store the original footage. I never have more than 2 hours of video to edit, so I don’t need lots of space for the original footage.
Is it better 2 1Tb disks instead of the 4 500Gb? Do I need the RAID arrays? These are the points where I have more doubts.
I will appreciate some opinions and recommendations.
    Thanks a ton!

How to get the best from a PC
From the looks of it, budget is not so much a problem. However I would not opt for the i7-975, but for a simple 17-920 overclocked to 3.6 GHz. With the money saved from that move alone you can get an Areca ARC-1680iX-12 raid controller with 2 GB cache for some more disks. I would not choose Seagates, but either the cheap Samsung Spinpoint F1 or the WD Caviar Black disks. With current prices I would only choose 1 TB disks, but would not go for less than 4 disks for the video part, and a separate WD Velociraptor as boot disk for OS and programs.
OCZ Blade 2000 MHz is a waste of money. 1600 DDR3 is quite enough and a lot cheaper. As stated in one of the guides linked to above, it makes more sense to get memory with the lowest CAS at the normal FSB frequency than to pay extra for higher frequency at the detriment of CAS.
I include an overview of my system, maybe it gives you some ideas on components.
    Hope this helps.

  • What is the minimum spec for a Macbook Pro to run FCPX?

I have FCP X installed on my 2009 iMac which has 8Gb of RAM. It works okay, more or less, but I need the portability of a laptop. As cash matters, what is the cheapest Macbook Pro option?  I would boost the RAM to 8gb but what else woud I need?
I would also like to be able to use the Macbook as the play source for video projects via my 1080p projector. I take it that they all output 1080p "full hd".
    Ron

Any MBP made since 2008 can be used for FCP X
The performance of the MBP is similar to the iMac so if you are buying a new MBP you will find that for many processes it is up to 3 times faster than your current old  iMac.

  • What is the best format for a new video editing hard drive?

    Hello,
I would like to know how to properly format a new 2 TB Hitachi hard drive that I have for my early 2008 Mac Pro that will be installed in drive slot 3. Information at the following link explains that:
"Journaling is essential for OS disks (boot drives), but for disks used for video media, used for editing purposes, Journaling is not advised, as it can affect the speed of data being written. For video media (scratch) drives you would want to select the Mac OS Extended, no journaling."
"Journaling only affects the speed of either writing to or modifying a file, it has no effect on the read speed of files. If you're writing a lot of data, for for a long period of time, like capturing video, the write speed of the data will slow down, as the Journaling record keeps updating it's self."
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/formatting_hd_macstone.html
My question is, is this information legit and should I format my new hard drive using Mac OS Extended? I will be using it solely for the purpose of reading and writing HDV and AVCHD video files using Final Cut Pro 7.
    Thanks
    Tom

    Hi there,
Ive always followed the idea that journalling is turned off, so I would follow the advice given and turn journalling off.
In addition I would also make that drive "private" to spotlight so it doesn't search or catalogue there.
If its of interest, I've always formatted my drives in the following way
    make 2 partitions,
partition 1 - make this about 10% of the drives capacity and label DO NOT USE
partition 2 - make this the remainder of the capacity
the reason being (So Im told by the drive gurus) is that the first sector contains the volumes boot block - this can get corrupted/damaged so having it partitioned like this means you can erase it safely whilst keeping your media.
Ive followed this for years and it has worked on the few occasions a drive has misbehaved.
    cheers
    Andy

  • What is the best file for editing?

I have movie clips that I need to burn onto a DVD-R. This DVD will be given to a friend and he will edit the contents in his own editing program (Pinnacle software). He asked for the highest resolution possible.
Of the following, which is the best file to create for him so that he can edit it?
    - DV
    - AVI
    - MPEG-1
    - MPEG-2
    - MPEG-4
    Thank you!!

if your source is from a camcorder, the native codec DV is 'best'.
iMHD imports those streams from tape 1by1, it is a 'clone', a bit-identical 'copy' from the tape.. couldn't be an better...
avi - is no codec nor 'format', just an old Windows media container. can contain literally all kind of codecs..
mpeg1 - historic (=old) codec, Standard don't allow a higher res than 320x240 .. antiqué, therefor veery compatible.. not meant for editing, a delivery codec, e.g. on VCDs...
mpeg2 - comes in many flavors, as on videoDVDs (.vob), .mod (JVC camcorders), .ts (transport streams from digital receivers), and in many 'versions', as h263, h264.. again: delivery codec by concept.
mpeg4 - 'inbetween' version of mpeg1 and mpeg2, comes again in many flavors.. delivery codec by concept.
