What is the MobileBackups Volume?

The volume "MobileBackups".... Can anyone tell me what this is?
I'm guessing I should leave this well alone I guess?..
The icon is the same as Time Machine.
Regards,
Del

Thanks Shawn and Linc. If I'd spent more time looking around I would have learnt this. So lazy... There is a lot on this subject. Thanks guys though...
Bit confused. I've not done a time machine backup for 53 days. When you do a backup does the system free up some space or does it stay the same? The longer the time the bigger the mobilebackup?
From what I've read, if you do disable local, you free up the space but you can't time machine again?
I'd like the best of both worlds really. I'd like to get more space but have a backup.
Thanks again guys

  • What is the original volume?

What is the original volume setting that came with the BrickBeaker game? I liked that volume but I accidentally changed it. Thank you.

I had a look at a couple different models that were running BrickBreaker and found that the default volume was set to zero.  I hope that helps.

  • What is this  mobilebackup volume that just appeared?

I just noticed a new volume, Mobilebackup. I appears to be a few days old, and appears to have the same kind of files that Time Machine does. It has backup files of two volumes (of four), and has one folder for the first day, and varying numbers of folders thereafter.
What is this? Where is it? Why is it?

  • How to use the max volume option

Well my ipod was pretty loud before and now i have dicked with that setting and sitting in my room with just a tv on i have it almost all the way up. What should the max volume be set at or what should i do to get that volume back?

If your talking about volume limit, you just go to settings and reset it. If you set a password you forgot, the only way to unluck it is to restore the ipod. That will make it loose all the data on it.

  • What is a Safe volume to listen to music?

What is the loudest volume (1-10) that you can listen to music to, while keeping the risk of hearing damage at a low???

There are safety limits and also recommended limits but to give you some examples.
A football game (or hockey arena or similar) is much more likely to cause earing problems.
Car races or even street noise are quite high compared to some output volume levels in headphones.
A rock concert is many times louder than the volume of your device at 100%. If you spend 3-4 hours in a concert this could cause much more damage.
Then there's the prolonged exposure to loud noises. In general some recommend that you expose 45 min/day to "loud" sounds.

  • Screen Sharing/network problem seems confined to 1 volume. What's the fix?

I am having a networking problem on one of the volumes of my multi-volumed, three-Mac local area network, and I need a networking guru to identify the specific software file(s), application(s), or system configuration that is the cause of the problem. I have already spent several hours checking and re-checking the various hardware and system preference settings involved, and I have narrowed the problem down to a software corruption issue and/or system configuration issue on one volume.
I now need someone to identify specifically what the nature of the problem is, and how to eliminate it. I am not looking for a sledgehammer solution that says I should re-install all of the Mac OS X software on the problem volume. That may be held in reserve as a last resort. I'm looking for a more elegant approach, one that points out the specific corrupt files to remove without disturbing everything else.
Here's some background to set the context. I have a MacBook Pro laptop; a PowerMac iMac G5; and a PowerMac G4 hooked up in a network. All are running Leopard 10.5.8. All have file sharing and screen sharing enabled. Besides being able to connect to each other using registered users, my goal here is for each of the Macs to be able to share the screen of the others upon my demand. Since each of the 3 Macs can theoretically share the screens of the other 2, that makes a total of six possible connections. Five succeed; one does not. That's the problem. I am trying to determine why the iMac G5 cannot share the screen of the MacBook Pro.
The iMac G5 has no problem sharing the screen of the PowerMac G4. That connection is fast and immediate. But, every time that I hit the Share Screen button on the iMac G5 to try to connect to the MacBook Pro, I get a window with the blue barber pole spinning for two or three minutes as it is allegedly "Connecting to Mac Book Pro," followed by a window with a headline telling me that "Connection Failed to MacBook Pro." The text within that window goes on to say: "Please make sure that Screen Sharing (in the Sharing section of System Preferences) is enabled on the computer to which you are attempting to connect. Also make sure that your network connection is working properly."
Well, as I indicated, the PowerMac G4 has no problem sharing the screen of the MacBook Pro, so the Screen Sharing settings on the laptop are correct; and the iMac G5 can share the screen of the PowerMac G4, so its network connection is working properly in that regard. It is only in regards to sharing the screen of the MacBook Pro that the iMac G5 is not working properly.
The reason why I say that the issue must be unique to the one volume in question, let's call it "iMacG5 Music," is that another Leopard volume on the same computer has no problem whatsoever in sharing the screen of the MacBook Pro. Whenever I boot up in that volume, let's call it "iMacG5 JMB," it makes a network connection with a registered user name immediately, and it is able to share the screen of the MacBook Pro within a second of my issuing the command. In sharp contrast to the success of the iMacG5 JMB volume, the iMacG5 Music is unacceptably slow (several minutes slow!) in making a network connection with the MacBook Pro, and it always fails to share the screen of the MacBook Pro, preferring instead to take about three minutes to attempt the connection, before announcing its failure.
Since the iMacG5 Music volume makes an immediate network connection to the PowerMac G4, as well as sharing the screen of the PowerMac G4 the moment I ask it to, I have concluded that the hardware of the iMac G5 is just fine. The problem seems confined to the system software and/or associated networking files that are unique to the iMacG5 Music volume. I just don't know what those files could be, or where the problem lies, so I've issued this call for help.
Let me add one more little twist to this puzzle which baffles me even more. I use external LaCie Firewire drives as clone backups of my Macs. As part of my trouble-shooting process, I booted up from the cloned versions of the iMacG5 JMB volume and the iMacG5 Music volume. What I learned surprised me!
The iMacG5 JMB clone worked just fine in making a fast network connection to the MacBook Pro, as well as sharing the screen of the MacBook Pro. I expected that. What I did not expect was that the iMacG5 Music clone was also able to make a fast network to the MacBook Pro, as well as share its screen!
Yes, that's right. It's weird! Screen sharing works OK when I start-up from the clone of the iMacG5 Music volume, but it does not succeed when I boot up on the source itself! I was surprised to find that out, but I'm glad I did.
(Over the past few days since I executed the last clone, I did use Drive Genius to de-frag the source volume, and maybe that has contributed to the problem I am now encountering. But it's hard to say, since nothing else seems to be amiss.)
One solution, I suppose, would be to sync the clone back to the source. But, before I do that, I'm just wondering if anyone has a clue as to the nature of this problem on the source volume and what I might do to remedy it—short of re-installing the system software or restoring from the clone. Anyone have any insight to this problem?

    CORRECTION #2:
    Ignore the previous "CORRECTION" post.
Oops, excuse me, I wrote that sentence correctly the first time.
I was trying to point out that the ability of the iMac G5 computer to connect quickly and effectively to the PowerMac G4 when booted up into the iMacG5 Music volume was an indication (to me, anyway) that there is nothing wrong with the computer's hardware, nor its network connection ability, but that the problem lay somewhere in the files/settings used to connect to the MacBook Pro, which it cannot accomplish.

Go to your home screen, and then press the volume down or up button. It should say Ringer instead of volume. If it doesn't do that, try going into the clock app and try it there.

    How is the drive attached?
Can you open large files on the drive with other programs?
Are you running any drive compression or acceleration programs (some drives arrive with these installed)?
Can you reformat the drive and try again?
    Hi Kirby,
I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.
    Thanks,

  • What determines the installation of a volume cap of 83% on my iPhone?

european iPhones have a lower line-output volume than US iPhones. they're simply not as loud as they "should" be when i'm listening with my headphones. this restriction is bound to EU because of some laws i don't really know a lot about (google helps).
by jailbreaking and modifying a certain file in the iOS, you can turn it up to 100% (or higher), and by entering this certain file (over iFile) there are a lot of abbreviations like DK, D, HN, F .. and so on, which are obvious european countries and all of them have this number of 0,82999999999999996 which stands for 0,83% of 1, so 83% from the normal 100% volume. when you change them all to 1 and reboot the iPhone, the volume output is much higher, the bass is better and it's simply how it should be and how i can imagine Apple wants the iPhones and the volume to be. it's easy, but i don't want to have my iPhone
jailbroken .. i want to accomplish this by not jailbreaking.
so i thougt a little bit about it and from my point of view there are just few possibilities:
to clarify, i'm from austria and i bought a carrier free iPhone 4, it's never been locked, direct from Apple.
    1. iTunes knows where I am when activating the iPhone (hence being in the US = no cap) .. but .. what if I am abroad, let's say in Germany, and I have to reset and reactivate my iPhone .. it shouldn't be set then to the lower volume limit.
    so my second guess was..
    2. the limit is set by the SIM-card which activates the iPhone (US SIM-card = no cap) .. but .. what if I am abroad and have to reset an activate my iPhone  ... dadada.. same story.
    3. the limit is set by my iTunes account, third and to me the most plausible way, since it's not limited to where you are and what you do, and it's the only thing which is ment to persist (one iTunes account for life, but more than one iPhone or SIM-card..)
    4. (and for me the worst scenario) would be, that Apple is making different iPhones for different markets, but that's something i cannot imaging since it would be too complicated and to much work to do. almost all things at Apple and especially when we talk about the iPhone is automated. an example is that it shows you VPN or carrier settings to define only if your phone is locked, or for example it only shows you the option to use it as a mobile hotspot or make use of visual voicemail both only if your carrier supports these options.
i know this because i work for two carriers here in austria, 3 and Orange, and i know a lot about these things. the same is with replacements: when you send an iPhone to be repaired and they return it, i often got back an unlocked iPhone and was wondering myself just like the customer was wondering .. but after 2, or 3 days it locked itself (it happened twice myself with my private iphone, one 3GS and an iPhone 4!), so my assumption is, that Apple simply produces iPhones and a lot of things are managed afterwards, over the air or over iTunes when first time connecting to it.
also i cannot imagine, that for example if i'm from the US and i loose my iPhone in Germany, and i want to buy a new one there because i need it for my business, that i'm bound to this volume cap also if i'm not living there and return one week later to the US.
so a lot of assumptions there, does anybody know exactly what defines it and what's required to "trick" the iPhone or iTunes into not setting this 83% volume limit cap except traveling to the US and buying an iPhone there??

  • There was an error opening the database for the library "/Volumes/Aperture Master/Unknown/Aperture Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary".    what do I do now?

There was an error opening the database for the library “/Volumes/Aperture Master/Unknown/Aperture Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary”.
What do I do now.  I cant access the photos on the drive.  The only option is Quit?  what ??????????
Please help ready to throw computer and drive out the window.  I have a deadline of next Tuesdaythe 11th.

Start Aperture while holding down the option and command keys. You'll get a Photo Library First Aid dialog as below.
Try Repair Database first. If that doesn't work, then redo the startup with option-command and try Rebuild Database. These repair processes can take a long time with a larger library.
If all that fails, you can try creating a new library from scratch and then try importing the old library into the new. This sometimes can fix problems that can't be repaired the First Aid way.
Also make sure the drive where the Aperture library is located is working properly. You can check it with Disk Utility app.
