What is the NIC doing?

Interesting scenario.....
If I attach an X61s with no AC power supply to our LAN all is hunky dory. However, if I plug an X61s (not powered on) with an AC supply it causes my IP phone to loose power. The phone is recieving power over the ethernet connection.
So, what is the NIC doing when connected to the LAN but the laptop is not powered on?

Nice thought and one that we are investigating.
Still outstanding is the questiion as to what is different between the NIC when the laptop is powered down but AC power is applied and when the laptop is powered down but had only battery power.
Also just established that the same is true for an M57 (albeit battery is not an issue here as it is a desktop but as soon as the power lead is plugged in the phone goes mad) with a Gb NIC.

  • What is the system doing when I empty a large file from the trash?

I am in the process of deleting my old iPhoto library. When I installed OS X 10.10.3 it created a new Photos Library.photoslibrary and left the old iPhotos library as an archive. The old library is 249 gigabytes. I don't have "Empty Trash securely" on, and yet it is taking hours for the Finder to empty the trash with the 249 gigabyte iPhotos library in it. What is odd is that for a time, the amount of free space on my MacBook was increasing. It went from 77 GB to 88 GB, and then it started dropping all the way to 70 GB free. Now it is back up to 83.61 GB free.
What is the Finder doing when it deletes a huge file? I realize that the iPhotos Library is not a single file, but contains hundreds of folders and thousands of files. Still I find it odd that it is taking it so many hours to delete, and that the amount of free space on my Mac goes up and down and up. Can someone explain this?
It has been deleting for 4 hours and based on the "Emptying the Trash …" progress bar, it should take another two to three hours.

Yes, but why would the space available go up and down and up as the files are deleted? If the Finder is deleting the files, shouldn't the free space on the drive be steadily increasing as the Trash is emptied?

  • What's the @ sign doing there?

I'm transfering files to a media reader and for some reason it can't read some of the files. Looking at the rights on the files in terminal, the ones not working has an @ appended. It would read like this
    -rwxrwxrwx@ owner group date filename.jpg
the above don't show up in the media reader.
    -rwxrwxrwx owner group date filename.jpg
    does show up.
    Please explain?

The @ indicates that there are extended attributes associated with the file. That could be access control lists or special flags.
You can't copy extended attributes to filesystems that don't support them. For example, a common media player will use the FAT32 filesystem (Windows 95) which does not support extended attributes for files. You should be able to copy the file over without a problem, you'll just lose the extended attribute information (which isn't necessary for the media player anyway).
One thing, however, is that OS X permits longer filenames and a larger number of characters than what is permitted by FAT32. If you have problems copying the file, try making the filename shorter and make sure that it uses simple ASCII characters in the name. Also, make sure that the media player is set to be writable. It's possible that it doesn't permit directly writing to it, even if it supports directly reading from it.

  • What's The Simulator Doing?

I've written some scripts that run fine in the simulator, but when the DVD is built they get wonky and stop working. I'm not asking you guys to debug my scripts, what I'm wondering is what the simulator is doing that a DVD player would not do... and why would it perform these functions, is it a bug?

Also, in DVDSP's abstraction layer (the space between where you drag and drop stuff in the program, and where DVDSP actually writes the DVD spec-compliant code) there can be some conficts created between different features attempting to use the same spec-based commands. For instance, specifying a button on a menu as a target uses a pre-command on that menu to highlight that button. If you specify a pre-script for that menu in DVDSP, it can override the button-selection pre-script that DVDSP is generating in the background.
If you are using pre-scripts look for ways you might be able to get them to run as stand-alone scripts, rather than attaching them to a menu. These types of conflicts often do not check out the same in simulator as in the build - Simulator is only simulating, and does not behave exactly as a player would under some circumstances.

  • Portal stability - "what is the portal doing?"

We have a portal running with the latest JDK (Linux X86_64, IBM JDK SR9), recommended parameters set and still facing lots of stability problems. The portal has three server processes, what we see actually is, that two of them consume each 100 % CPU. Actually no one is logged into the portal. I can see "strange" messages in the default trace such as

What can we as a CUSTOMER do aside from creating thread dumps and attach them to an OSS call and "wait"? How to find out, what the system is doing?
    Markus

David, I really do appreciate your help - thank your for your time.
It´s 4 am here in Germany and I just got a reply from another J2EE-ESS-Portal Prio-1 call, that´s why I´m awake...
Meanwhile I have found out a possible "reason" for this. A collegue responsible for the "BI Portal" (we have meanwhile about 18 or 19 J2EE instances due to the fact, that you can´t install everything on one due to interdependencies - all-in-all a big mess) did today some configuration in federated portal infrastructure (I wasn´t aware of that) and apparently a configuration change invalidates the/a/some (of those dozend) buffers/caches on both portals and implictly triggers a GC. Since the parameter "-Xdisableexplicitgc" was not set, it may be ran around in circles.
I finally deleted the the logfiles today due to other problems we had because SAP is still unable to provide a usefull logging mechanism by default and your logfiles are getting trashed with 99,9 % garbage making finding other non-fatal errors almost impossible without stopping the engine, deleting all *.trc and *.log, starting again and trying to reproduce the error - on the production system, including massive user interruption (who´s logged on? one doesn´t know).
I am really thankful for your offer to help but I´m at the point, where I just open OSS calls, (including ABAP) 16 are running, 2 prio-1, several prio-2 - just plain frustration and no more motivation to do one step more than necessary.
I got today a note from a supporter about "JMS" - what the heck is that and why do I need to know anything about that? I´m at the point: "Either educate me and  give me the possibility to do so without the necessity of becoming a Java developer - or leave me alone with that boring detail and fix the error."
You are absolutely correct, one need to work "together" but doing so by opening OSS calls and talking to seven different people in one call and giving me notes that are greek or other notes with "click here and click there" is not "working together", it´s just a very typical example of distributed development, where distributed is so distributed, that the right hand doesn´t know what the left hand does - limitation of damage.
    Build once - debug everywhere.
    sigh

  • Trying to upgrade to 3.6.8, and it says I can't because I "don't have access to some of the items. What in the world does this mean, and what do I do?

I'm on a new Mac Mini running 10.6.4, bought in January and loaded with what I assumed was the latest version of FireFox--what I have is 3.5.2. I know I upgraded at least once since January
When I try to download 3.6.8, it says that I "don't have access to some of the items."
I don't think I've downloaded any plug-ins or anything that should trigger this. I have done a bunch of the standard upgrades that Microsoft incessantly sends out to fix problems in the Office suite. Haven't added any new applications. Can't figure out the problem. HELP!

    Hello.
    Try this:
    - uninstall your current version of Firefox (no data will be lost)
    - delete it's Firefox install folder (not your profile folder)
    - install the new version
That should circumvent this problem. If you can't delete your Firefox install folder, after having uninstalled it, maybe it's because some of the files are locked. Try rebooting the system. If that doesn't help, ask Apple for support.

  • Firmware 1.1 - What is the verdict - does it fix the buzzing noise?

I've been waiting to hear if Apple has resolved the issue of the buzzing noise with the 2nd Gen Nano. Those of you who have experienced this issue - has the new firmware resolved the problem for you?
I'm not sure whether now is the time to buy or not? I'm interested in the 8GB or 4GB models if that makes a difference however, from what I've read the issue has surfaced among all capacities.

I have said this a couple of times and I say it again...apparently I must be very luck because I did not experience this buzz on the 4gb I had briefly, the 8gb I currently have or the 2 that I purchased for birthday gifts to others. Because so many people seem to have been having this problem I wanted to make sure I didn't buy anyone buzzing gifts so I checked them both out. And apparently, no one that has the issue (solved at this point or not) have been able to get a real answer as to just what the problem is. I think this is also one reason why I don't really like to order my ipods...if there is an issue you can't just take it back to the point of purchase and get a replacement that same day (unless the Apple stores allow that...the closest one to me is about 100 miles away so I wouldn't know!).
Hope something happens soon for you!

  • HT4623 what if the update does not show up

i tired to put the software iOS 5 on my iPhone 3GS but when i check for an update it says that my curerent verson (4.2.1) is the lastest verson. What do i do?

What Kappy said. You can verify your iPhone model by entering its serial number here: https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
4.2.1 is the last version supported by the 3G, hence Kappy's supposition.

  • How to know what is the CR doing in the datebase

    Hello Friends,
We have a strange problem. Our change run is running  for almost 12 hrs  where as earlier it used to run  for 1 hr.  Once we killed the CR job and reran the CR again. It ran successful. but however our basis team informed that cancelled CR was working in the database n some infoobject and there  were many changes to this infoobject. First of  all, where to se this information ?? Is that in ST04, if so how?
They informed us that they are upgrading the oracle..
Please let me know how to see where to see on which infoobjects these CR is working and number of changes in the database..
    Regards,
    BI Folk

You can use the program RSDDS_CHANGERUN_MONITOR to monitor the change run, where you can get all the data for which Info objects are changed and which aggregates are being adjusted and all.
To know the number of changes you need to check the P table of an infoobject and check the M version entries, that will be the number of changes.
Also to know which aggregates are being adjusted when a change run is running go to table RSDDAGGRDIR selecting u201CINAu201D in the column Object Status and u201CAu201D in the column Version.
Also to verify which infoobjects are being used by aggregates Analyze table RSDCUBEIOBJ.

  • What are the moderators doing to enforce SDN rules?

    Hi All,
I'm writing these because is very frustrating to see that nobody enforces the rules of the forum...
    -Duplicated posts everywhere
-People don't bother to do the minimal research before posting a thread
    -Single line questions
-Average 1 out of 20 posts is rewarded accordingly
-Point lurkers that repeat the same answer again and again...
-People asking for tips and documents for interviews
-People asking for documentation without even checking Marketplace or Help.sap.com
I don't know you, but i think SDN is becoming very messy and i can't see anything been done to keep the order.
    Opinions?
    Regards
    Juan

    Hi Juan,
Your critique is always welcome.  Here, and via comments to [email protected]
I would advise though being a bit more specific when describing your experiences.
Statements such as: "nobody enforces the rules of the forum" and "i can't see anything been done to keep the order" might be too general in that they don't address your specific experiences or concerns in a particular area but rather speak of all forums.
We have many moderators, many areas and some might be more "orderly" or "enforced" than others.  I looked at some of your posts and wonder if your experience is based on the Netweaver AS forum.  Is this a particular area of concern?
More importantly, ( and in the spirit of your request to keep order), may I suggest that since your post is a duplication of dozens of contents already posted here and in comments and suggestions...
you consider looking at the most recent threaded discussion in this very forum
My rant about standard of questions and answers .  There  you might wish to join folks who are discussing practical solutions.

  • What % of the time does edge even work

Seriously I dont mean to complain, I really do love my iPhone, BUT I bet my edge will not even activate 50% of the time. It seems like I have to turn it to airplane mode for a couple of seconds then back on. It will detect crappy AT&T and then only if I have a good signal edge will work.
Dont mistaken this for a complaint about edge speed I am ok with that. Has anyone else noticed that edge just seems to have gotten crappy unreliable lately? I was in the middle of Columbus at gallery hop my signal should have been good last night and I couldn't get it to work at all.
This thing is awesome with wifi it almost seems like the updates have made edge worse to reconnect to once you've left a wifi area.

It's a connection issue with edge. It needs to know that you're phone is on the network. Just because the icon is in the corner is showing edge service doesn't necessarily mean you are connected to edge. The only solution that the att reps have ever given me is to turn the phone off and back on, allowing it to re-establish connection so that it the att towers know that your phone is there. Airplane mode is pretty much the same thing as turning it off - after you turn airplane off it has to reconnect with the network. I have had this problem with previous phones. I feel your pain, but we will just have to suffer with it i guess.

  • How do I get what does the function does.

    Hello.
I want to get what the function actually does like in
    javascript:
    object.onmouseout
what has hot a result of this:
    function anonymus() {
    what ever the function does
but in flash I tried to use this:
    object.onEnterFrame
    but I get this
    [type Function]
    Thanks

    I'm not sure I understand...but then I'm not entirely
familiar with javascript... do you mean that you want to access the
actionscript definition of the function? You can't do that (except
    maybe with a decompiler).
to call a function and get the result you use the open and
close braces, with arguments if required (for example):
    object.onEnterFrame()
    or
    object.doMyThing("with this argument")
    or just
    doMyThing()
depending on where its defined and current scope.
but if you do trace(doMyThing) or trace(object.doMyThing)
    it will trace: [type Function]
this is normal. In the same way that an object's string
output is [object Object] if you try to trace it. The difference
with an object is that you can access its properties and method
names (functions) without knowing them if they are not hidden by
using a for in loop. But you can't (AFAIK) get anything related to
the contents/definition of a function (or method) at runtime.

Can any One Let me Know why We need to Have 2 Minimum Dialog Work Process and not 1 or 3.
What are the Task does this 2 Minimum work process handles in CI.

You need more than on if the system needs e. g. generate a program, this is done asynchronously, one process "waits" while a second generates a program. This is the absolute minimum, if you have only 1, you will stuck at the first time, the system needs to generate.
