What is the OEM 640 Drive?

I've done some looking and can't find to find a definitive answer:
What is the stock 650GB drive that ships with the 09 MP?
I'm ordering my MP tomorrow and would like to have a WD Black drive for my boot volume:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319&Tpk=WD6401AALS
Plan is to then move OEM drive to bay 3 as a backup volume, and have either a 1.5TB 7200.11 or 1TB 7200.12 drive in bay 2 as a data drive.

An etching knife and magnifying glasses do the trick!
Just use the Partition tab in Disk Utility and set to two partitions, use "1" and leave 2nd as storage or even 'free space' is all that's needed.
No need to use all 599GB, and SuperDuper will optimizes all the directories - uses its own "intelligent design" for what folders go where, though I have my own method for doing things.
I put a 4-8GB 'holder image' on the drive first, that locks the outer zone from being used while cloning. Later remove it and let the system migrate files as needed, even though the file system uses its own hot list directory and some caching.
And if you have Intech Speedtools and ZoneBench, run those. In fact, I highly recommend setting ZoneBench to its highest possible numbers (511MB test file, 50 zones, write 30x over) to test and force drive to loosen up heads, hammer at tracks, insure there are no bad or weak sectors.
If you own SoftRAID, it is a nice partitioning tool, will alert on I/O errors, and very flexible. And with RAIDs, you can easily set up multiple RAIDs on your drives, say you want to have a 3 drive scratch using the outer 100GB of each and use the rest for media library.

It would help to know your OS version but, here goes:
for OS 10.6.8 and older, find System Profiler in Applications > Utilities and launch it.
For OS 10.7 and later find "System Information" in the same path and launch it.
In the left-hand navigation pane, click "Serial ATA" or "SATA/SATA Express" depending on your OS version. The main pane will change to something like this:
Note the info I've outlined in red. In the image, "WDC" is a Western Digital drive. Post the code for your drive and we can deterrmine what brand you have.

  • What is the best backup drive to use to backup a windows xp pc and to transfer that data to a new iMac i5 May 2011 and then to backup my iMac on it?

What is the best backup drive to use to backup my windows xp pc and to transfer these files to my iMac i5 new in May 2011 and then to backup my i5 iMac?

Get something with both USB and Firewire connections, as big as you can afford.  Format it Fat 32, plug it into the XP machine with USB, drag and drop the files you want to keep, plug it into the iMac with Firewire, drag and drop again.  If you want to use it just to back up your Mac in future, reformat it Mac OS Extended and enable Time Machine.  If you're likely to want to share the drive with Windows PCs in future, leave it Fat 32.

Yesterday, I tried a SEAGATE SSHD but my screen was always a showing a QUESTION MARK (?). It's not the cable because when I put back the old original version, everything works...Any sugestion of brabnding or procédure to upgrade my hard drive?

The largest 2.5" dia SATA drives available are 2 TB in capacity.
Have you tried the Seagate SSHD connected externally to the MBP via USB?  The drive itself may be faulty.

The largest 2.5" SATA HDDs of 9.5 mm thickness that I am aware of are 1 TB in capacity.  There is a 12.5 mm thick  HDD that will fit some MBPs.  But I have not seen any of larger capacity.
Are there now 2 TB HDDs available for MBPs?    If so, I am interested.
    Ciao.
Both OWC and Crucial have SSDs of about 1 TB capacity.

  • What is the maximum hard drive size for Imac 8,2, what is the maximum hard drive size for Imac 8,2

Am wondering what is the maximum hard drive one can put into this computer. I think it's a 3TB but I read somewhere the drive needs a jumper to bring it back to 3mb level cache. Can anyone confirm these details please? I currently have a 320GB drive installed.

    Hi Robbie,
I found no iMac 8,2, do you mean iMac 8,1 ???
There is no practical limit to the size, the biggest ones made will work fine... assuming the all important SATA 3 Gb/s speed, WD drives use a jumper on pins 5&6 to slow it from 6 Gb/s to 3 Gb/s.
    Some drives do it automatically...

And some do not step down properly at all.

  • What's the largest hard drive size my 8600 can support?

    hi all,
Years ago,I noticed my 8100 Powermac couldn't support larger hard drives than 2GB so I had to partition. Now I have a 8600 Mac with a 4GB hard with no partition. What's the largest hard drive size my PowerMac 8600 can support?

Here's an 18GB SCSI HD on eBay that says it will work on a PM 8600. http://cgi.ebay.com/18-GB-IBM-SCSI-HARD-DRIVE-Apple-Power-Mac%7CG3%7CG4%7CG5-Wrt y_W0QQitemZ120360935737QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090109?IMSfp=TL090109111005r37358
You could also install an ATA PCI card and probably go larger.

  • What is the largest hard drive I can upgrade to for MacBook Pro A1278 Early '11

What is the largest hard drive I can upgrade to for macbook pro A1278 Early 2011?  I have seen 750GB on some websites, but I would like a 1TB  I am looking for SATA 6.0GB, 1TB 7200.  Is this dependant on the physical size of the hard drive? I have seen a height of 15mm and 9.5 mm.  How do I know what will fit??

I have not seen any 7200 rpm 1 TB HDDs.  They all are 5400 rpm.  I would say that this HDD comes closest to your requirements.  Tomorrow, there may be others.

  • What's the best hard drive I can put in my mac book 6,1?

What's the best hard drive I can put in my mac book 6,1? Is there a solid state hard drive available? I've been through two hard drives in the last 3 years, which i primarily blaim on how much I have to move my computer around at work while the drive is spinning.

Yes there is and SSD for your Mac.  I just ordered an SSD for a MacBook 6,1 from OWC.  http://www.macsales.com/
    Also check Crucial and Kingston.
I ordered the DIY Upgrade Bundle: Mercury Electa 3G SSD.
That MacBook is only capable of 3 GB/s so the 6G SSDs are overkill.
I recently upgraded the memory from 2 GB to 8 GB.  It cut the boot time by a factor of three.  That is only a $100 upgrade.

What is the max hard drive for a late 2006 xserve?

    Hi Kappy,
That's not quite true. I don't think anyone has managed to get a 3TB drive working as 3TB on an Xserve yet.. Here is the official compatibility matrix from Apple http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1219
2TB seems to be the limit. Some people have had success with non Apple drives but it's very hit and miss..

  • What is the maximum hard drive replacement I can use on my PowerBook g4 867 ghz?

What is the maximum hard drive replacement I can use on my PowerBook g4 867 ghz?

Sorry we are late. This forum is getting less traffic as people upgrade and responses sometime take longer. Everyone here volunteers their time, and I for one was unavailable much of yesterday.
The limiting factor on max drive size is that your PowerBook uses the older PATA drive interface, and the largest PATA 2.5-inch drives available today are about 320 GB.
What I'm reserching is the ATA bus controller in your PowerBook. Some older Macs cannot recognize more than 128GB of PATA hard drive space. However, this archived discussion from 2008:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1413918?start=0&tstart=0
suggests that people are running PowerBooks older than yours and not suffering the 128GB limit.
At this point, I need help with what appears to be a descrepancy between the text of your post and the PowerBook in your profile. A "PowerBook6,2" model identifier returns to the "PowerBook G4 (12-inch DVI)" marketing name with a 1.0Ghz processor; the 12-inch PBG4 with a 867mHz processor shows a model identifier of PowerBook6.1. They show the same hard drive interface but the later on appears to be a sure bet for large hard drive support,
