What is the other section on iTunes!!!?

I updated my iPod touch 64g 3rd generation to the new system.  I recently had about 18 gigs free, but with the new system I have .98 free space and 21gigs in the other section so now all of my pics won't sync to my iPod!  What in the world is the problem and what is the other section and why is it so full all of a sudden!?

Many files got corrupted during the update process and are in the "other" category. To recover, you need to restore your iPod.  First try restoring from backup. If not successful (since the corruption is in the backup), you need to restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

If it's contasntly growing and gets to be a big number then there's an issue. You should back everything up and restore.

  • What is the 'Other' section in iOS

I can't seem to find a definitive answer on Google.  I noticed that the Other section on my iPhone is now taking up 1.3 GB of space and I'm just curious as to waht this is.  I still have 10+ GB left so it's not a big deal, just curious as to what could be taking up so much space?

  • How do i get rid of the other section on itunes, how do i get rid of the other section on itunes

the "other" sections on my Iphone 4s and Ipod keep getting bigger. How do I minimize this?

Other includes data such as iPhone settings, contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cache/cookies, email and email attachments, SMS/MMS/iMessages, notes, data created and stored by a 3rd party apps.  Minimizing this data will conserve on the size of Other.  If it becomes unusally large (>2 GB) then there may be someting corrupt in it and you will need to restore your phone to correct this.

  • Does anyone know what causes the "other" section to appear taking up space and what I can do to get rid of it...?

For some reason everytime I add things to my phone this "other" section grows just a little more. I am not sure entirely what I might be able to do to delete this and if I may be able to keeo it away in the future. I thought restoring my phone would do it but this only reduced it I still have space taken up by it. If anyone has any solutions for me please help...

There will always be a certain amount of "Other". Amounts to .8gB could be considered normal.

I'm pretty unsure as of what it is, I have an iphone 4s. any help?

    Interesting observation I noticed.
I just factory restored my phone and went to install Spotify's app on iPhone 4S in iTunes. Kept clicking 'remove' and 'install' and watching the Other space. It ate it up like candy.
They've really got to fix this whole mess. It's embarassing.
I can't possibly be the first, but I filed a new bug report with Apple (13640889) on https://bugreport.apple.com/ just to nudge them about it yet again.

  • HT1386 What is the other data in itunes window?

I have an iPod touch 4th gen. When i connect it to iTunes it says that other data is 1gb.What is it?

It includes items that do not fit into the other specific categories listed. That is why it is called "other". Some apps store items there and I think song artwork is also stored there as well as other things. If the other gets very large that usually indicates that it included corrupted files and restoring the iPod will get rid of the corrupted files.
1G is on cusp of showing that it has corrupted files. You can try restoring from backup and see if that reduces the other.

  • What is the "other" section?

    Basic Information:
    Software: OS X Version 10.9
Processor 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 2 GB 13333 MHz DDR3
MacBook Air 11" Purchased Mid 2011
    Hi Everyone,
So to view to the remaining storage left on my disk, I click on the the small apple sign on the top left corner of the screen, selected "About the Mac", More Info and then storage in order to view how much space is occupied.
    Here's the breakdown:
As you can see, most of my disk is occupied by this "Other". I was wondering what files on the disk make up this "other" and if it is possible to remove this files so I can free up space on my disk.
    -Thanks!

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • What does the "other" tab in itunes mean?

yesterday i downloaded the new version of i tunes and had 10gb left on my i phone and in the "other" tab down the bottom it now says 3.18gb i dont know what type of files contributes to it can anyone help?

Other can be Album Artwork, Notes, Contacts, Firmware etc. or ( in the case of an iPod that can be enabled for disk use, files that are on there if you are using an iPod as a removable storage device). If you feel that Other is being incorrectly reported then try restoring your iPhone: Backing Up, updating, and restoring your iPhone and iPod touch software
