What is the "others" part of the Mac's hard drive?
Hi,
I've seen in my Mac that the "others" section occupy above 30 gb on my hard drive. If someone could help me to tell me what is this I would be very grateful!!

I did not try your trick, didn't see your post until after i visited the Apple store. The tech at the genius bar did not know why my "Other" memory had grown so huge. It was over 24GB, which only left me with 1 GB free on my 32GB iPad. I had been loading and unloading video's yesterday thru itunes to try various compression settings. I did not notice the other categrory growing until I tried to load a 3 GB movie file and it told me I was out of memory.
I probably loaded and unloaded 30 different times, trying different compression settings. In the process of doing this, it apparently loaded up the "Other: stuff. To me it seems like recycle bin in windows, but no one knows how to free it up.
So here is what he did and it worked. He reset the iPad. Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Then he hooked it up to itunes on his computer. Fortunately I have everything backed up on my home computer. When my iPad showed up on iTunes at the store, it showed the 24 MB of "Other" momentarily, then it reduced to about .7 GB giving me 24.5 GB free. Resetting it seemed to do the trick, but he still could tell me how this is happening and how to prevent it.
I think I'll try to call someone at applecare to get an explanation, hopefully. -

If it is not your startup partition:
Volume Erase
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select the desired volume from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button. -

The operating system for the iPod, album art, databases, etc. all make up the "other stuff". Think of it as all the backstage things required to make your ipod work.

Under no circumstances should you try deleting files outside of your Home folder. -
I have an iPhone 5 and when i lightly tap on the back top part of my phone it sounds like something is rattling inside. Only on the top part of the phone, not on the bottom. I am wondering if anyone knows what this may be and should i have it looked at?
Definitlely have it looked at. That could be a hardware deffect on the maker(apple) so there could be a definite replacement option.

yes, but I'm trying to use my iPad to type notes (using pages) and I have the smart case which I use as a stand. I need a cable long enough to fit through the back of my desk and the charging brick for the iPad won't fit behind the desk. I have to put it on the floor and then the apple cables aren't long enough to reach.

I have forgotten my administrator password, and there are no hints. I have a Mac OS X Mavericks. When I get to the reset password screen, it has no hard drive to select. What now?
If you're using FileVault, you first have to unlock the startup volume in Disk Utility. Select it and click the Unlock button in the toolbar. Of course, this is only possible if you know another password to unlock the volume. If you don't, follow instead these instructions.
