What is the point of Apple TV anyway?

I must be missing something but I don't see the point of the Apple TV:
If one has to convert all video, presentation and other material to run on Apple TV. What is the point?
All these converted videos, etc. don't only take up time to convert but take up unnecessary disk space too. What is the point?
Surely Apple will make future versions of its DVD Player, iLife, and iWorks, especially Keynote, compatible with Apple TV so that one can stream DVD's, Keynote presentations, etc. directly to a TV via Apple TV without having to "rip" ones DVD's and convert them or convert all ones presentations into QuickTime. Otherwise, what is the point?
As for movies on iTunes tell me what proportion of the population buy their movies? Most movies are only worth watching once, if that, so most of us rent them for far less than the cost of buying. You can't rent movies for Apple TV. So, what is the point?
For teaching situations it would also make sense for Apple to make it possible to "stream" the Mac desktop, including running applications to a large screen TV to allow it to be used as teaching tool in lecture theatres, classrooms, etc. I say it again, what is the point?

If one has to convert all video, presentation and
other material to run on Apple TV. What is the
point?
One doesn't have to convert all video. A great deal of compatible MPEG-4 formatted content (including MPEG part 10, a.k.a. H.264) is available from diverse sources, including Apple's iTunes Music Store. One interesting source you may not be aware of is video podcasts. Just as audio podcasts have become popular as a distribution format for audio content, so too now is the video version. An easy way to sample what is available is through the "Apple TV Showcase," accessible from the Podcast section of iTunes Music Store.
All these converted videos, etc. don't only take up
time to convert but take up unnecessary disk space
too. What is the point?
Nothing says you have to keep multiple versions of this content on your hard drive(s). In fact, H.264 is the current state of the art in video compression, offering higher quality vs. file size than any other codec. Most people find that even for HD content up to 720p24, Apple TV's 5 Mbps limit produces either no visible compromise or so little that the file space saved is well worth the tradeoff. Moreover, the number of standard DVD's (which use MPEG-2 compression) that contain content that can't be re-compressed in H.264 at <5 Mbps with no losses at all are few & far between.
<div class="jive-quote">Surely Apple will make future versions of its DVD

Only Apple can say what Apple will do, but remember that there are a number of issues involved here, not the least of which is DRM & the legality of providing software that defeats protection schemes, that may prevent it from doing what consumers would like it to do.
As for movies on iTunes tell me what proportion of
the population buy their movies? Most movies are only
worth watching once, if that, so most of us rent them
for far less than the cost of buying. You can't rent
movies for Apple TV. So, what is the point?
Not that long ago, most industry pundits thought the consumer market for buying commercial releases of movies or TV shows was insignificant -- that for instance consumers would prefer to see movies in theaters & have no interest in buying them afterwards, or that they would only be interested in rentals. I don't know if you have noticed, but they were wrong ... to the tune of billions of dollars in revenue per year that often exceed the revenue from theatrical releases.
Some of these same pundits more recently predicted that selling TV shows by the episode, particularly at less than HD resolution, would have no marketing potential -- after all, why buy something you could watch or record for free? Once again, they were wrong. It turns out that some people just like collecting episodes, others are eager to buy a missed episode of a favored show, still others are willing to pay for selected cable content but not for cable TV, & so on.
At the same time, bricks & mortar rental chains like Blockbuster (the world's largest) have seen profits plummet, prompting ever greater reliance on other products, including in-store sales & their own online services, still oriented toward rentals. Other retail giants like Wal-Mart have tried online rental services, too. So far, all these rental-oriented services have yet to exceed "also ran" status compared to Apple's success.
Put simply, the point is renting is becoming less popular & ownership --particularly when it is comparatively easy & cheap -- more popular.
For teaching situations it would also make sense for
Apple to make it possible to "stream" the Mac
desktop, including running applications to a large
screen TV to allow it to be used as teaching tool in
lecture theatres, classrooms, etc. I say it again,
what is the point?
The point here is that products that do this already exist, but the market for them is very limited compared to the one the much cheaper Apple TV targets.
Put another way, what "makes sense" to consumers (the fabled $100 laptop, for example) doesn't necessarily mean it makes sense in commercial terms, no matter how badly people want it or how well it would sell.

  • What is the point of icloud backup, when you have to plug your iphone into itunes to restore it anyway?

ok im confused now.. What is the point of backing up and restoring your iphone with icloud, when to restore your iphone you have to plug it into itunes anyway? you might as well just restore it from there then shouldnt you?

when to restore your iphone you have to plug it into itunes anyway?
But you don't. You can restore your phone data direct from iCloud wirelessly without a computer.

  • What's the point of recovery partition when I have to DL the whole thing anyway?

Well I was supposed to sell my Macbook Air today.
I tried booting CMD-R into the recovery partition and instead it went to some online thing.
So then I booted Option, into the recovery partition and clicked on Reinstall Mountain Lion.
Next thing ya know its got me logging into the Apple Store and now it has a 7 hour download.
So what is the point of the recovery partition if it can't do a fresh copy of Mountain Lion?  What exactly is it to help me recover from?  What if I was in the hills of Indonesia and tried to do this?
Any now I can't sell this thing until tomorrow as I have a seven hour download wait ahead of me.  Had I knows, I would have let that be the new owners problem.  Or somehow made a backup of ML previously.
Silly Apple. Always advertising something so great that turns out to be useless.

The silly part is not alerting the user that when you download and install that the .ESD installer package will be deleted and to make a copy of it.
The system you download - guesstimates can be way off - check with speedtest.net - is associated with YOU and your Apple ID and the best thing to do is any OEM material and a blank hard drive - and printout of ML Recovery Mode tech article on doing an internet based install.
Yes you could have setup a 4GB installer flash drive or on your hard drive. Yes they could maintain that 4GB on a larger Recovery partition (it is less than 1GB).

  • What is the point of having 17 apps if no one is skilled in that many disciplines anyway?

I have been told how having access to 17 apps is a really great deal. The problem is no one is skilled in that many different disciplines. Even if someone took the time to learn all that software they would still not be competent in all those fields. I don’t know any creative types that are really good at graphic design AND video AND illustration AND music AND the web coding etc. What good is access to all those tools if you don’t have all the skill to do all those different line of work?
I keep hearing people say “Isn’t it great to know that you could use all that software if you wanted to?” No! It isn’t! Having access to tools without the necessary skills to competently use them is pointless! I have worked in graphic design for about a decade and have been improving over all that time so the idea that I could just start a new field adequetly is redic! You need to have an entire team of people who work in many fields to do all those things really well. So my question is what is the point of having the software running off one machine with a license for only one user?

    @W_J_T (and MikeChambers)
“yeah you gotta be good at something rather than no good at anything, that is true. ;-)
I guess that is why I don’t understand this big push by Adobe to make their users become mediocre in many areas. Can you please elaborate on this point Mike Chambers? Why should I be bad at a lot of things rather then good at a few things? I don’t get it.
“As far as apps vs fields, the first thing many people wanna know is if you know the required software for the given task(s).”
On one hand I understand the need to have software skills on the other hand software skills without artistic talent does little good.
“Why that is I don't know, its rather odd and does not allow people the same ability to only focus on their more specialized sectors like in the past with the Creative "Suites".”
I understand the problem Adobe had with suites; all the products had to be released on the same time schedule which meant some were released way before they should have been. CC gets around that problem but Adobe hasn’t done a good job at telling why anyone needs all the apps.
“Did you just wish to have some dialog, or do you have a specific question or suggestion about things? I am kind of confused at this point sorry. ;-)”
It just seemed odd to me when I kept hearing these Adobe evangelists getting excited about the ability to use so many apps. I came here since I was hoping Adobe could explain why having apps in so many fields that you are not talented in is a good deal. So far I am still waiting for Adobe to answer that question.
“your passion seems to be solely the design aspect of things.”
Yes, it is but perhaps most importantly is the issue of time dedicated to learning a new craft. I have a good amount of design work so looking into a career change at this point doesn’t make sense for me. If I changed my career I would have to turn down design work that I currently have  coming in and that would be a little silly.

  • AirPlay: forgive me but what's the point?

In our place we have a first generation Apple TV, a few Macs, a couple iPhones, and an iPad. We use our iMac to stream and sync content to Apple TV. Anything we put on our iPad/iPhones content-wise almost always comes from our iMac where everything is stored.
I'm wondering, what's the point of AirPlay in this scenario? I mean, why would I ever want or need to stream to Apple TV from an iPad or iPhone when all my stuff is stored on my iMac anyway? I'm having a hard time understanding the point of AirPlay, unless it's all about streaming content to OTHER people's Apple TVs when you are away from home... but I don't know if this is even possible.

Well, if absolutely all the photo/video content on your iPhones already exists in iTunes on your imac, then there is no point to Airplay for you.
Myself, I'll be using it to Airplay photos to my big-screen TV from my iPhone 4. I only synch my phone to iTunes maybe once ever 3-4 weeks, so it will be great to snap a photo of my 7-month old son and instantly stream it straight to my TV, without having to plug my phone into my computer, import the photos into iPhoto, and then navigate to the homeshared photo event on my apple tv. Just one button (airplay) on the photo in your iPhone photos app, and it's on the TV. I already tested this and it's great.
And yes, if you ever bring your iphone over to someone else's house and want to show some pics that are on your phone, you can easily do that. Any iOS device will stream to any Airplay device (like ATV) as long as the two devices are on the same wi-fi network. It is possible to setup a password on your apple tv (2nd gen) so that someone with an iOS device must enter the password before being permitted to airplay content to the ATV, but if you don't enable that password then it is a one-touch process to stream your photos.
That said, one feature I thought Airplay would enable, which it apparently doesn't, is the ability to stream the videos in your iPhone's "Photos" app to the ATV. You can airplay the still photos to show a slide show, no problem. But there is simply no airplay button on the videos in your photos app. This is disappointing since I was looking forward to being able to shoot a short video and then instantly stream it to my ATV to show off to my wife or visitors. Apparently, this feature is not enabled.

  • What's the point when most browsers are NOT Safari ?

I’m using a Mac of course (since 1996) but also have other browsers installed like Firefox, SeaMonkey & Camino (formerly Mozilla).
Spending MANY hours redesigning my old site, formatting and creating really nice FX that render perfectly on Safari, FAIL to render properly on the aforementioned browsers.
Since most people on the planet are not using Macs or Safari, what is the point of using iWeb08 if the rest of the word cannot see your site as intended? I used to use Mozilla Composer for the last couple of years and I never had any issues with my pages rendering incorrectly...
Try for yourself, visit www.dpkmusic.com on Safari to see what it’s supposed to look like. Then visit it on any other browser. You’ll see what I’m talking about. Unless I’m horribly mistaken and I’m doing something terribly wrong...
I’d appreciate it if some one can let me know if this really is the case. Thanks.
(And yes, I did use the Apple Feedback link already about this matter.)

Out of curiosity, did you shadow the text IN the text box, or the text box itself??? I couldn't figure out why my shadows were too dark and others not when I found that you can do it either (or both) ways. I don't remember now whey I decided the text was better because clearly clicking the box is easier.
Anyway, text shadows & reflections are one thing that do work ok on my web page (my first). I think Georgia which is what I used for body text because I wanted to use something different than Times New Roman for a change but still be 'web friendly' looks weird on the PC/Firefox, kind of moth eaten, although it looks just fine on my Mac/Firefox, might be a resolution issue, I dunno, and the least of my problems right now.
I am also a refugee of the upgrade problem. I just found the solutions here yesterday and plan to work on it today. In my case as a newbie, using a program for newbies, I never encountered the domain.site file while building my entire site so I thought I was backing up when I kept publishing to successive folders to mark my progress. No, I didn't read the Read Me file to back it up when I upgraded, I usually do....
One new thing to mention, I was just checking my fonts to answer your question and clicked on our About Us page (the site is for my lab) and the pics were completely rearranged!!! I moved to another page and back and then they were in correct/matching order. Anybody have this happen???
Best of luck to all, and thanks for all who have done so much problem solving so far.

  • What is the point of the download window if you use stacks?

    Greetings,
One of the most annoying things about the download window was the fact that the window always hung around after completing dowloads in Tiger when using safari. To me, that was just a time waster of always pressing Apple+W to close that window.
When Leopard was released, I was excited to realize that one function of the download stack was to recevie downloads from safari after completed. However, after completion, the download window still sticks around and I still have to close it... then navigate to my stack of downloads to mount the image. What is the point of the download window is I use stacks now? Why can't the window disappear after completion?
    //Cheers

Aaargh!! Me too - it's so annoying! Firefox has a downloads window as well - I just don't see the point of it. I didn't like it in Tiger either.
As a way to see the progress of downloads, it's fine, but it should at least close when all the downloads are finished, and completed downloads should not display.
Ideally it should look & work exactly like the Copy window in Finder - the one that comes up when you are copying or moving a large file or number of files from one folder to another.
Is there a hack that will make it work like that?

    Hello Pushtheriver,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice concerning iCloud storage issues:
    Get help using iCloud storage
    This may also help:
    Understanding iOS device capacity
You can sync and download many different types of content on your device. Some types of content (such as music and videos) typically take more space than others (such as notes and books). The amount of space taken by an app depends on the app's purpose; complex or graphically intense apps usually take more space than simpler apps.
If your device is near its capacity, you can remove some of the less used content to make room for more.

  • Backed up ipod to the cloud (12/25 11am) and then updated. Music is gone and the back up is not restoring?! why? What's the point of the cloud if nothing is there?

Ipod has been playing music in my car the past two years. new computer this year and new email address. Backed up to cloud. change ID on itunes. Music on my ipod disappeared. Shouldn't it be on the cloud somewhere?! What's the point of this cloud? And is it b/c I can't seem to change my icloud ID to the new one on my ipod settings?

Music is not stored in your personal iCloud account, or in your device backup.  Music purchased from the iTunes store is in available for redownload as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519.  Music from other sources such as your CDs should be in your iTunes library on your computer and can be synced back to your iPod from there.
To change the iCloud account on your device you have to delete the exsting account, then sign back into the new ID.

  • What's the point in buying a new MacBook?

    Hi all,
Recently I went with my iBook G4 to the Apple store to troubleshoot a small problem, but they were unable to help me as after only 7 years, the machine was rendered obsolete and they didn't feel obliged to help. My iBook recently died and I felt like a part of me was missing.
So my question is, what is the point of buying myself a brand new MacBook Pro if in 5 or 6 years, it will be obsolete? I want a Mac that will last me wherever I go for a long time before it finally dies. I've realized that I need to put PowerPC computers out of the question, but will intel processer Macs last longer than PowerPC processors?
For the record, I don't want to switch to Microsoft as I find them difficult and this isn't a crack at Apple.
    Any answers are very appreciated,
    Thomas.

With Intel based Macs the hardware will not become obsolete as fast as PPC based Macs did, but the operating system and/or applications used might.
That does not mean that it will stop working, just that you won't, in a few years' time, be able to get the latest bells and whistles.
Officially, support from Apple ceases after seven years - but that does not stop the Macs working!
    Vintage and obsolete Apple products:
Obsolete products are those that were discontinued more than seven years ago. Apple has discontinued all hardware service for obsolete products with no exceptions. Service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products. These include ALL G4 and G5 models.

  • What's the point of iCloud

Unless I misunderstood, I have to pay to get all my music to be pushed to all my devices (iTunes Match) and I have to buy iWork for my iPhone (even though I already have it on my Mac) in order to get those documents pushed to the cloud. (It makes more sense to stick with iWork beta!)
I feel like Apple is nickling and diming its loyal customers.
So, essentially, iCloud is useless! I thought it would be a great way to free up space on my hard drive; I could just store my documents and music in the cloud.
My question is: what is the point of iCloud? Honestly, what does it do? It just pushes stuff between your devices? I genuinely don't understand the point of it.

Here we go... Yet another 'loyal' Apple customer who seems to think that because they've bought one Apple product, Apple should forever let them have new products and services for free.
The real problem here is that Apple has no long-term commitment to support anything it makes.  It wasn't that long ago that MobileMe (which was not free) came into existence and now it is already being dumped in favor of iCloud, which lacks the iDisk, remote access to Time Capsules and personal websites.  It's a step backwards and a disservice to those of us who were using some or all of those MobileMe features.
Apple's product cycles, both hardware and software, are too short to be of use to anyone but those who like to play.  Forget about trying to run a business from Apple products these days.
    That is exactly right.
In my own small home network we 7 Macs all being synced through MobileMe. Only two of these Macs can run Lion and doing so would mean no longer being able to use applications that our clients still use so it would mean loss of these clients. Not to mention the cost of replacing at least 5 of or Macs.
Then there are businesses that have dozens of Macs or sometimes even hundreds of Macs along with gigs and gigs of data that Macs running Lion can't access. So even ignoring the huge cost of replacing al these Macs with newer Macs there is still the issue of Macs running Lion not being able to run needed applications.
With MobileMe one could buy a newer Mac running Lion and it would still be able to sync with older Macs but now it is all or nothing.
At least one design shop that I do work for is now replacing their Macs with Windows machines since these computers can run older software and also be able to sync with iOS devices using iCloud. At least a dozen other places that I do business are considering doing the same thing.

  • What's the point of a 3rd Gen?

I read that the 3rd Gen Touch has lower battery by 6 hours from the 2nd Gen Touch. That true?
    If so, what's the point?

    Oh, and another quick question.
(Off topic a little) Can you buy the 3rd Gen...(Or any iPod Touch)...at an Apple Store?

    David. wrote:
I think only newbies would buy the new touch.
If, by "newbies" you mean people who don't already own a Touch, well, that sounds like a pretty good market. Most people don't buy a new iPod every year. (Okay, some of us do. I do. But that's not the point.) Seems like the biggest market share to capture would be people who don't already have one. I don't really see where there's a problem here. Come to think of it, the 2nd gen wasn't a huge revolution from the 1st gen.
We all know you're not going to buy one. We're all okay with that.
And yes, I'll probably buy the 64 gig in a month or so. I may buy the new Nano, too. Silly, I know, but it keeps me too busy to complain about things.

  • What's the point of movie creator?

What is the point of movie creator if I can't edit or create my own movie? All it does is select it's genre (weekly, monthly, yearly ect) and compose it's own movie. To me it's a useless app either that or I'm a simpleton and haven't explored it enough to figure it out properly.

@Antman87 I felt exactly the same after I got my Z3 Compact.... but soon after, in February, I made a trip to the beach with my wife, son and his godfather, and after I took many pictures and videos for the day (including pool pictures, timeshift videos, etc) the app created an incredible mix with awesome music and almost perfect selection of my media... I was shock, so I fiddled with the app a little bit more and replace a couple of pics with others better related and the results were simply great...
After that I realize that the app has encouraged me to share those moments with friends and family (I upload them to facebook) since it is extremely simple to use and at the same time the videos are short (around 30 secs) so you will not bore everyone with 5 minutes clips...
On the other hand I do wish it included better editing tools or at least integrated the ones found on the device (photo/movie editor from Album) so we could have more control of what and how it's being displayed...
Anyway I will not post publically my family videos, but I recently made one of me parasailing with my Z3 Compact tied to my wrist! and that one I uploaded to YouTube... Take a look... Parasailing with my Xperia Z3 Compact
Here are a couple of screenshots from the original video...
I love Movie Creator... hopefully it keeps getting better
