What is the proper setup for Gmail on iOS

I have been struggling with this since I made the switch to iPhone in November.   I use gmail and would like my emails to be sent from my own domain.   Exchange no longer works.  Any help is appreciated

Google stopped supporting their version of Exchange (ActiveSync) unless you have a premium GMail account.
The "proper" setup depends on your preferences and needs.
You can use the standard iOS profile to set up your GMail account using the standard iOS Mail app, or use the GMail app.  The GMail app supports Push, the standard iOS GMail does not.
If you want your Google contacts to be available on your iPhone, the GMail app will pull a contact into a new message without the contacts actually being installed in your iOS Contacts app, but of course they won't be available for any other purpose.  The standard iOS profile for GMail does not let you sync your Google contacts, so the best route is to set up your Google contacts as a CardDAV account:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4872?viewlocale=en_US
This is done as an additional account to your iOS GMail account (or just set up contacts only and use the GMail app).
The GMail app does not provide Calendar or Notes support, only the iOS GMail profile does.
Personally I use the standard iOS GMail account for Mail, Calendar, and Notes, and set up a separate CardDAV account to sync my Google contacts.  I'm OK with not having Push support for mail, there are more important things to fret over.

    What's the proper protocol for a reset on my ipod touch 4g?  iOS 6 has totally jacked it up and it will no longer do anything but crash, and won't sync with itunes wirelessly or by cable.
    It's a 64G ipod touch and was fine till Apple told me to upgrade to ios 6.  Now most of my apps crash, my music won't play and I just get a white screen when I hit Music.
    When I try to sync to itunes it acts like it's going to sync and appears to recognize the ipod, but it's grayed out and has an update circle by it that spins for a while until itunes eventually freezes alltogether.  Is there a  way to go back to ios 5 after a erase and reset?

  • I use photo stills in my iMovie. I want them to last longer than a minute, but when I input 01: 45: 00, to signify one min. and 45 seconds, it doesn't accept it. What is the proper format for inputting minutes?

    I use photo stills in my iMovie. I want them to last longer than a minute, but when I input 1:45:00, to signify one minute and 45 seconds, it doesn't accept it. What's the proper way to input it?

    There are 30 frames in one second of video. So you can specify down to the frame level, which is 1/30th of a second.
    Is the Duration box switching to some other time every time you type in 1:45:00?
    For instance this is a 5 second clip plus 3 frames. To get this set properly I would type in 1:45:00, then click done. I don't know if it is different under older versions of iMovie, as I'm using iMovie '11 for thisi example.

  • What is the proper name for Mac OS? OS X? Apple Mac OS X?

    It's a tad bit confusing for me since I am new to Apple.
    What do you call it the true name for it?
    Apple Mac OS?
    OS X?
    If I type in OS X It shows all the versions released form Apple.
    Like in the snap shot below.
    http://i1157.photobucket.com/albums/p600/napninjanx/Snapshots/Untitled_zps2d1aa9 90.png
    When I searched for MAC OS it did not show the versions of released OS X for Apple.
    Like in the snapshow below.
    http://i1157.photobucket.com/albums/p600/napninjanx/Snapshots/2_zpsbae85e49.png
    But when I searched on eBay for Snow Leopard it showed the brand name
    http://i1157.photobucket.com/albums/p600/napninjanx/Snapshots/3_zpsbcb588ac.png
    Then I thought going by brand name and model is the way to know the proper name for it.
    I think the proper name for it is Apple Mac OS X that's how you type it in order to know other realses if I am not mistaken.

    You can call it Mac OS X or OS X and others will know what you mean.
    If you click the apple at the left side of the menu bar, About This Mac, you will see OS X so that is what Apple calls it.

  • Ownership/Group/Permissions What is the proper setting for free access?

    When we first get a customer supplied disk, it is copied to our G5. It looks like whomever is logged into the G5 and copies the disk becomes the owner of that folder and their permissions are applied to the enclosed copied files.
    We never know who will wind up working on these files and I want anyone to have free and open access to the files.
    So what it the proper choice under the ownership & permissions?
    My thinking would be:
    Owner = System
    Group = Everyone
    Access = Read & Write
    There are bunch of acromyms under these pulldown menus which mean nothing to me.

    Choosing 'everyone' and 'read & write' should work fine.
    You could change the owner to 'system', but there's no need.

  • What is the PROPER plugin for Windows Media Player 12 - Prompt leads to WMP 11

    Is the plugin for WMP 11 the proper plugin for the WMP 12 64 bit system?
    Is this WMP 11 plugin the version of the plugin itself or for WMP Version 11?
    One web cam I tried to view said it needed this plugin, it wouldn't download; said to do it manually. When I tried it listed the Windows systems w/bit system information and Windows XP SP2 (x86)
    Windows XP SP2 (x64)
    Windows Vista (x86)
    Windows Vista (x64)
    There is nothing offered for Windows 7 at all, much less for this 64 bit system as it does for the two above systems. This is very unclear, and with so many problems posted all over the Internet.... and having lost graphic card ability and later memory burn out on last computer due to this same issue in Vista, I would really appreciate the proper plugin information relating to this issue so I can safely use my computer.
    Who creates the plugins?T Firefox or Microsoft? How can this problem go on for so many years unresolved? Thanks for your insight.

    You need a 32 bit Windows Media Player and a 32 bit plugin for it.<br />
    I don't think that the WMP plugin will work with a 64 bit WMP version.<br />
    Firefox is 32 bit as well.
    The WMP plugin that you found works with WMP 12.

  • What's the best setup for a dedicated boot drive (Lion) with a separate storage drive?

    I have a 120GB SSD and 4 x 3TB drives striped together for storage on my hot off the shelf Mac Pro. This may be an elementary question and I'm sure it's like every other post in these forums but what really is the best way to maintain a dedicated OSX Lion boot drive while keeping user profile type stuff on the storage drive? A few thoughts...
    1) I know the risks with striping, which is why it will all be backed up online. Yes. Online.
    2) I am specifically curious about how to keep pretty much all of the User folder type stuff on the storage drive...at least the big stuff.
    Any recommendations? I know Win7 had some big problems with doing this kind of thing. My main goal is to be able to reinstall OS X every day if I wanted and not affect the users or their respective data. Possible?

    The desktop is implemented by a folder by the same name in the Home folder for each user.
    Before you move it, it will be here:
    /Users/<your_shortname>/Desktop
    I would first try providing an alias in Finder to replace that Folder.
    If that does not work, you may need to use Terminal to create a Symbolic Link.
    ln -s  <desired location> <where the link should be created>
    You can open up terminal and type in man ln to see the other options and how the command works.

  • What is the proper method for cleaning up EventWaitHandle?

    Hi all,
    I'm working on inter-process communication between applications running on the same machine. More specifically I have a primary application that is connected to multiple industrial machines collecting data from each.
    I want to create secondary applications that consume this data. I intend on using MemoryMappedFile to share the information. I've tested the MMF part and it works fine.
    I'm at the point where I want to notify the client applications when new data is available by using an EventWaitHandle. I create the handle as follows.
    handle = new EventWaitHandle(false, EventResetMode.AutoReset, ClientName);
    In the client application I use WaitOne inside a thread for the event notification. This too works well.
    private void MonitorForSignal()
    running = true;
    bool signaled;
    while (running)
    signaled = handle.WaitOne();
    if (signaled)
    if (!handle.SafeWaitHandle.IsClosed)
    //Do something
    I create the thread as follows:
    monitor = new Thread(MonitorForSignal);
    monitor.IsBackground = true;
    running = true;
    monitor.Start();
    My concern is that I may be creating an orphaned thread or a memory leak when I close the client application. So I implemented IDisposable in my client class and do the following.
    protected virtual void Dispose(bool disposing)
    if (disposing)
    // free managed resources
    // free native resources here if there are any
    running = false;
    handle.Close();
    handle.Dispose();
    monitor.Abort();
    I believe this does indeed free the resources, but I've read that Thread.Abort is "bad". Before I implemented IDisposable I did some testing in a couple of WinForm applications, one acting as the host and one as the client. I noticed that I could
    close the client and subsequently Set the EventWaitHandle in the host application and this line of code in the client would fire in the debugger.
    signaled = handle.WaitOne();
    This made me worry that I wasn't properly cleaning up my thread objects.
    Below is the entire client for reference. What I'm really asking is how do I properly clean up the MonitorForSignal thread and the EventWaitHandle in the client?
    public class ClientA : IDisposable
    bool running;
    string clientName;
    EventWaitHandle handle;
    Thread monitor;
    private void MonitorForSignal()
    running = true;
    bool signaled;
    while (running)
    signaled = handle.WaitOne();
    if (signaled)
    if (!handle.SafeWaitHandle.IsClosed)
    //Do something
    private void ProcessData()
    //Do Something
    public ClientA(string ClientName)
    if (ClientName == null || ClientName == string.Empty)
    throw new ArgumentException("Cannot be null or empty.", "ClientName");
    clientName = ClientName;
    handle = new EventWaitHandle(false, EventResetMode.AutoReset, ClientName);
    monitor = new Thread(MonitorForSignal);
    monitor.IsBackground = true;
    running = true;
    monitor.Start();
    #region IDispose
    ~ClientA()
    Dispose(false);
    public void Dispose()
    Dispose(true);
    GC.SuppressFinalize(this);
    protected virtual void Dispose(bool disposing)
    if (disposing)
    // free managed resources
    // free native resources here if there are any
    running = false;
    handle.Close();
    handle.Dispose();
    monitor.Abort();
    #endregion
    Regards,

    Hi Michael,
    Does this code cause the thread to spin?
    while (!handle.WaitOne())
    //TODO: Do work
    Thread.Sleep(1000);
    I was hoping not to spin thus the EventWaitHandle. As for the named handle, I am building multiple applications that need to have inter-process communication, all running on the same machine.
    I think I can update my class to use your recommendation for the dispose method, specifically using handle.Set
    However, I would update the MonitorForSignal as follows:
    bool _closing = false;
    private void MonitorForSignal()
    running = true;
    bool signaled;
    while (running)
    signaled = handle.WaitOne();
    if (signaled && !_closing )
    if (!handle.SafeWaitHandle.IsClosed)
    if (NewData != null)
    NewData();
    And the dispose as follows:
    protected virtual void Dispose(bool disposing)
    if (disposing && handle!=null)
    running = false;
    _closing = true;
    handle.Set();
    if (!monitor.Join(5000))
    monitor.Abort();
    monitor = null;
    handle.Dispose();
    handle = null;
    // free managed resources
    // free native resources here if there are any
    This allows me to skip over the "Do Work" part which should only be done when Signaled from another application. Your suggestion to use handle.Set() in the dispose method coupled with adding the bool _closing allows me to get past the EventWaitHandle
    and also skip the work when closing.
    Also by setting "running" to false in the dispose, the thread will naturally end after the wait handle has been set.
    Thanks for suggesting the Thread.Join, that does seem allot more graceful. When I tested these changes it was blazing fast. In the previous code when I called monitor.Abort the application would hang for about a second.
    Do you think the changes capture the intent of your suggestions?
    Regards,

  • What is the proper setup in BIOS when using promise raid controller

    I am using the k7n2g-islr board and using the on-board promise controller.  Everything has been working ok, but all of a sudden I get a "disk read error".  THe Promise Bios picks up both my drives (one is serial ATA, the other IDE), so I don't think the hardware has failed (completely anyway).  So, in the main BIOS it doesn't pick up any drives there with autodetect.  So...my question is twofold.  First, should the main BIOS be picking up a drive or not?  Second, what should the boot sequence be to boot of the promise controller (i.e. HDD-0 or SCSI?).
    THanks in advance.
    Dave
    k7n2g-islr
    160GB Serial ATA (Boot)
    120GB IDE (secondary)

    The main bios page will not show any sata/scsi drives.....only ide drives....as for booting the first boot option should be either sata, or scsi...if that is the drive the os is on.

  • What is the proper method for embedding image files in a documentDB model?

    I'm working on some standard CMS functionality to produce simple service articles for a website. I'm looking at two possible options but I'm not sure which way to go.
    Example 1:
    I really want to create a value object to represent the image such as
    class ImageFile
    public byte[] fileData { get; set;}
    public string contentType { get; set;}
    class WebArticle
    public ImageFile {get; set}
    public string someContent { get; set; }
    Or am I stuck with storing the image seperately w/ Azure Storage and just simply using my documentDB object to reference it's url via something like this:
    class WebArticle
    public string imageUrl { get; set; }
    public string someContent { get; set; }
    I see that there is some way to add "Attachments" but I'm not really clear on what the attachments are for. I don't think that I am reading the correct documentation. Is there a webpage out there that clarifies this. A kindle book on Amazon maybe?
    I'm looking forward to using this new technology. Ryan's Channel 9 presentation on the subject really caught my attention.
    Thank,
    Dan Jerome

  • What is the best setup for cable modems/routers for mac?

    I use a MacBook Air and currently have CableOne as my ISP. I use the AirportExpress for my router. To upgrade to faster speeds I need to upgrade my modem. Am thinking about using a modem/router combination. What is the best set up for me?
    Do modem/combos work well with Mac?
    Also - would it be better to upgrade to an Airport Extreme? We had a housefull of Mac people for Christmas and the Airport Express couldn't handle all the devices very well at all.
    Your wisdom is appreciated. Thanks.

    By the way, CableOne lists mainly Motorola modems and combos as supported equipment.
    Thanks.

  • What is the b2b setup for identifying TP names from file name in Inbound tx

    Hi,
    I am using B2B 11g version and documents of type ANSI-X12. I am working for Inbound Transaction and using Generic File protocol in Listening channel.
    File format is : %FROM_PARTY%_%TO_PARTY%_%DOCTYPE_NAME%_%DOCTYPE_REVISION%.dat
    How can i make B2B to identify Trading partner names from the file name once the remote trading partner put the file in the specified path with the specified format "%FROM_PARTY%_%TO_PARTY%_%DOCTYPE_NAME%_%DOCTYPE_REVISION%.dat" mentioned in the delivery channel.
    Now B2B is identifying Trading partner names from the Interchange Sender ID(ISA06) and Interchange Reciever ID(ISA08) of the ISA Segment. Please help me , how to make B2B to identify the trading partner names from the file name instead of from identifiers coming in ISA Segment.
    Thanks,
    Sridhar Rachumallu

    Hi Anuj,
    1)Now i am giving the file name for inbound documents in the format of "%FROM_PARTY%_<UniqueNumber/Timestamp>.dat" . But still B2B Identifying the TPNames at runtime from the ISA Segment elements ISA06 & ISA08 element values. I want to make B2B to identify the TPNames at run time from the file name instead of from ISA Segments.
    Please tell me how can i do these?
    2) I am giving exact Remote Trading partner Default Identifier Type 'NAME' value for "%FROM_PARTY% in the file format and i want B2B to identify the TP name at runtime based on the value of "%FROM_PARTY%" . If the value of "%FROM_PARTY%"is matching with any one of the Trading partner Default Identifier Type 'NAME' value than it should go for furthur else B2B should through error as " the TP name unable to found".
    3) Please tell me how B2B Identify trading partners at runtime in the business case given below
    - Inbound Transaction from remote TP to Host TP
    - Document protocol is 'ANSI-X12'
    - Listening channel protocol is 'Generic File'
    This is very urgent.. Please give the reply As soon as possible.

  • What is the replacement method for preventDefault() on iOS?

    Using preventDefault() in response to orientationChanging is a well-documented technique for preventing rotation on iOS. What is the recommended replacement method for this call when manually managing device rotation events?
    From the release notes: preventDefault() is not honored for the ORIENTATION_CHANGING event on iOS. This is a behavior change from AIR 3.4 and will remain so. (3324338)

    Auto-orientation has drastically changed in iOS 6. Some of the auto-orientation callbacks have been completely deprecated in iOS 6. This change affects the screen orientation API's in AIR too and support for the new callbacks have been added in AIR 3.5 beta release. The deprecated callbacks informed the application about the new orientation it was being rotated to. Hence, application could decide whether it wanted to rotate to the new orientation or not. However, the new callbacks do not give us such information. The application is only queried about what orientations are currently supported. If this value returned by the new callbacks matches the new orientation stage is being rotated to, the stage automatically rotates. Otherwise it does not. As a result of this limitation of the new callbacks, support from preventDefault() was deprecated on iOS in AIR 3.5(built with iOS 6 SDK). The application will still receive the ORIENTATION_CHANGING event. But calling preventDefault() inside the ORIENTATION_CHANGING event handler won't prevent the stage from being rotated to the new orientation. It is important to note that apps packaged with iOS 6 and running on iOS 5.1 devices or lower will also see this behavior change of not able to control auto orientation by using preventDefault(). This was done to make this change consistent across iOS devices.

  • What are the proper settings for export to Windows DVD Creator?

    I'm trying to write some DV-Widescreen material to a DVD using Windows DVD maker (hey, it's free.)    So far I've tried "H.264", "MPEG2" and "DVD-Wide" settings, and various permutations.
    I either get a single file (.mp4) which Windows DVD Maker won't recognize at all, or I get three separate files: .m2v, .wav, and .xmp.   The only one Windows DVD Maker recognizes is the m2v file, which is video-only (no audio).
    Seems like this should be really simple given the awesome power of Media Encoder, but I can't find the right combination of settings.    Can anyone help?

    Use "MPEG-2 DVD" and in the settings panel, under the MULTIPLEXER tab, change Multiplexing from "NONE" to "DVD" - this will output a single file that DVD Maker will accept.
    Under AUDIO tab, I set audio to Dolby and DVD Maker accepted the result. I don't have any speakers attached to the test computer at the moment, nor did I burn a test DVD, but the fact that DVD Maker readily accepts the file suggests that all will be fine. You might also try MPEG audio, see what works for you, but Multiplexing is the key.
    While DVD Maker does accept the AVI file you gave it, keep in mind that you are then rendering TWICE, once to AVI, and then DVD Maker needs to further transcode the AVI to MPEG-2 for the DVD. Makes more sense to render direct to MPEG-2 DVD format and be done with it.
    Thanks
