What is the proper way to move the iTunes (v11) Media folder to an external USB HD?

What is the proper way to move the iTunes (version 11) Media folder to an external USB HD?  I have tried to following listed instructions, but although I can get the songs listed, their locations are not found.

Tried the option key, but it would not let me select the copied iTunes folder.  Also changed the path for iTunes Media Location folder.  But still iTunes is not happy.  I could try the alias route, but I don't have an iTunes folder that iTunes is happy with to point it to.  All of the songs and even the playlists will come up, but it seems some form of the folder and its files must remain on the internal hard drive.  But I want to move it off because it is out of space.  Any other thoughts?
I have all of the music etc files what I do not want to lose is the playlists.  I don't care about the play counts.  I would be glad to reimport all of the songs to the newly designated folder, but won't I lose my playlists?
Thanks for your help.

  • What is the proper way to use the write method?

    What is the proper way to use the OutputStreams write method? I know the flush() method is automatically called after the write but i cant seem to get any output
    to a file. The char array contains characters and upon completion of the for loop the contents of the array is printed out, so there is actually data in the array. But write dosnt seem to do squat no matter what i seem to do. Any suggestions?
    import java.io.*;

    FileReader fis = new FileReader("C:\\Java\\Test.txt"); //read chars

    File f = new File("C:\\Java\\Test.txt");
    char[] charsRead = new char[(int)f.length()];
    while(true){
    int i = fis.read(charsRead);
    if(i == -1) break;
    // fw.write(charsRead); this wont work
    // but there is infact chars in the char Array?
    for(int i = 0; i < charsRead.length -1 ; ++i){
    System.out.print(charRead);
    }catch(Exception e){System.err.println(e);}

    Sorry to have to tell you this guys but all of the above are broken.
    First of all... you should all take a good look at what the read() method actually does.
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/api/java/io/InputStream.html#read(byte[], int, int)
    Pay special attension to this paragraph:
    Reads up to len[i] bytes of data from the input stream into an array of bytes. An attempt is made to read as many as len[i] bytes, but a smaller number may be read, possibly zero. The number of bytes actually read is returned as an integer.
    In other words... when you use read() and you request say 1024 bytes, you are not guaranteed to get that many bytes. You may get less. You may even get none at all.
    Supposing you want to read length bytes from a stream into a byte array, here is how you do it.int bytesRead = 0;
    int readLast = 0;
    byte[] array = new byte[length];
    while(readLast != -1 && bytesRead < length){
      readLast = inputStream.read(array, bytesRead, length - bytesRead);
      if(readLast != -1){
        bytesRead += readLast;
    }And then the matter of write()...
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/api/java/io/OutputStream.html#write(byte[])
    write(byte[] b) will always attempt to write b.length bytes, no matter how many bytes you actually filled it with. All you C/C++ converts... forget all about null terminated arrays. That doesn't exist here. Even if you only read 2 bytes into a 1024 byte array, write() will output 1024 bytes if you pass that array to it.
    You need to keep track of how many bytes you actually filled the array with and if that number is less than the size of the array you'll need pass this as an argument.
    I'll make another post about this... once and for all.
    /Michael

    Home Sharing is option A.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819
    Option B is consolidating the library to an external HD.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1364

    Or you can use one of the other 8000 methods. I just prefer these two.

  • What is the Proper way to nullify the VECTOR after it's scope is over

    I am using Vectors and Array lists at many places in my Web Application, It is neccessary to use them.
    In some processes I m storing bulk amount of data into vector due to that the performance of my application will be decreased, for that I have to nullify the vector after it's scope is over.
    To nullify I m using Vector v = new Vector()
    v.clear().
    The above method is suitable in case of simple object data like strings and other values.
    But I wanna know that If I m using HashMap and storing bulk data in it and then I m storing each HashMap into vector, what is the proper way.
    Does I have to iterate each object of HashMap from vector and set them as null and then set vector as null or directly I can use v.clear() method??
    If any having any answer regarding my question then plz reply your each valuable reply will be appriciable.
    Thanks in advance......!!

    Thats why I m nullifying it.
    Even if I'll declare it out side the loop then also for the each iteration I have to nullify it cause what I m doing is I m inserting the data into database in each iteration of loop, So that I think it is must to nullify the objects each time.If it is constructed inside the loop then you do not have to nullify it. If it is constructed outside of the loop and you want to empty it for each iteration then just clear() it.

  • What is the proper way to open the app store  for ios

    Using Air3.1 to develope a game.
    I want to have links on my main menu which will open the iOS app store for a specific application.
    The only way I have found to do this is by opening a url "http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=<THEAPPIDHERE>&mt=8"
    However, while this does work, so to speak, when I try to go back to the application, it starts up as if it had crashed... and it does several "redirects" before it get's where it is eventually going.
    Is there a better/proper way to open the app store?

  • HT1751 What is the best way to move my iTunes library from an external PC drive to a Mac external drive?

    I just make the move to Mac computers.  My iTunes library is currently on a PC formatted external drive.  I would like to move it to an external drive that i have formatted for Mac.  What is the best way to do this?

    Is the entire library on the external drive or just the media folder? If it is the latter, and you still have access to the PC then see make a split library portable.
    If the drive is in FAT32 format you can connect a portable library directly to the Mac, holding down Option as you start iTunes. Otherwise you either need to copy it to a local drive (Mac should be able to read NTFS) or install a full service NTFS driver so that the library can be read and updated.

  • What is the best way to move the Installer folder to another drive?

    The Installer folder on an SSD with limited space has grown to 30GB.  I am willing to take the risk to move this folder to another HD.  I have read about moving the folder using junction on other versions of Windows.  Is that still the best
    approach?

    even though junction will also work for "C:\Windows\Installer" as stated at this document below

    I suggest do back up and create system restore before doing this, because this solution comes from 3rd party and I haven't tried this

  • Does an ipad have any storage?  Basically looking to eliminate DVD's and just use the storage on my movies (in iTunes) could I just get an external hard drive or what is the basic purpose selling point on this apple tv?

    i would ideally like to not use all my macbooks memory either and we have an xbox so all the streaming for like netflix we can do on this.  I guess thats why I'm wondering if it is a better idea and if it is possible for us to just utilize an external hard drive.  And if we do that will i have more space on my computer?

    I thought I could just drag and drop my iTunes library to an external hard drive.
    it'll work ... if done properly ☞
    copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music or media folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on your Mac to the external, then launch iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder on the external.
    if I already have my iTunes going to the incorrect files how is it going to find the correct files again.
    you could try if this script helps:
    iTunes Track CPR v1.3
    This script attempts to locate the files of so-called "dead tracks"--iTunes tracks designated with (!)--that you assume are not actually missing but are still located in the iTunes Music folder in their "iTunes File Order" (Music -> Artist -> Album -> file.xxx)."
    Eric Ross wrote:
    When you moved the file back did you go back into iTunes in your preferences and select the advance tab and then selected the location again or where your files are
    the iTunes media folder location in preferences > advanced tells iTunes where to put new additions to your library, not where your content currently is.

  • What's the easiest way to move the location of my CS6 install?

    Hello,
    I recently installed CS6. However, I installed it onto a storage drive without really thinking that through. I'd much rather it be on the primary drive instead.
    Because the download/install/activation/update etc was such a time-consuming headache, I really do not want to uninstall the entire thing and go through all of that again. Plus, given my luck, there would probably be some glitch or problem when uninstalling or activating with the same serial number, etc. It just seems like a pain.
    So I'm wondering how feasible it would be to literally just drag the entire folder over? Obviously the shortcuts would change, but would everything else still work?
    Any advice or insight would be very welcomed.
    Thanks!

    What is your operating system & version?
    If you are on Windows, moving an installed application to another location is not possible; only uninstall/reinstall can achieve that.
    I don't know if it's possible on another OS.

    i would not do that wirelessly. first it is less reliable and, second, depending on the size of your lib, it may take ages. instead, connect both macs via ethernet cable or firewire (starting up the "source" Mac in target disk mode).
    either drag & drop the entire iTunes folder from the source to the target or use the recommended steps here.

  • What's the easiest way to move app data and data structures to a server?

    Hi guys,
    I've been developing my app locally with Apex 4.2 and Oracle 11g XE on Windows 7. It's getting close to the time to move the app to an Oracle Apex server. I imagine Export/Import is the way to move the app. But what about the app tables and data (those tables/data like "customer" and "account" created specifically for the app)? I've been using a data modeling tool, so I can run a DDL script to create the data structures on the server. What is the easiest way to move the app data to the server? Is there a way to move both structures and data in one process?
    Thanks,
    Kim

    There's probably another way to get here, but, in SQL Developer, on the tree navigation, expand the objects down to your table, right click, then click EXPORT.. there you will see all the options. This is a tedious process and it sucks IMO, but yeah, it works. It sucks mostly because 1) it's one table at a time, 2) if your data model is robust and has constraints, and sequences and triggers, then you'll have to disable them all for the insert, and hope that you can re-enable constraints, etc without a glitch (good luck, unless you have only a handful of tables)
    I prefer using the oracle command line EXP to export an entire schema, then on the target server I use IMP to import the schema. That way, it's near exact. This makes life messy if you develop more than one application in a single schema, and I've felt that pain -- however -- it's a whole lot easier to drop tables and other objects than it is to create them! (thus, even if the process of EXP/IMP moved more than you wanted to "move".. just blow away what you don't want on the target after the fact..)
    You could use oracle's datapump method too.
    Alternatively, what can be done, IF you have access to both servers from your SQL developer instance (or if you can tnsping them both already from the command line, you can use SQL*PLUS), is run a script that will identify your apex apps' objects (usually by prefix to object names, like EBA_PROJ_%, etc) and do all the manual work for you. I've created a script that does exactly this so that I can move data from dev to prod servers over a dblink. It's tricky because of the order that must be executed to disable constraints and then re-enable them, and of course, trickier if you don't consistently prefix ALL of your "application objects"... (tables, views, triggers, sequences, functions, procs, indexes, etc)
