What is the range for an Airport Express?

What is the range (physical distance) for an Airport Express?
What is the range (physical distance) for an Airport Extreme?

The range of the AirPort Express is about 150 feet or 50 meters. But, this measurement is taken in free air, with no obstructions like walls or ceilings in the signal path, and no other networks in operation that might interfere with the wireless signal.
In the real world, in a real home, once the signal passes through 3-4 walls, it is about gone. A ceiling will absorb more of the signal than a wall, because it is thicker. So, as much as possible, you want wireless devices to have line-of-sight with the wireless router for best performance.
Bottom line....it is not possible to predict wireless performance in advance of any installation since there are so many variables involved.

150 feet in clear space with no obstructions in the signal path.  It is not possible to predict range with any obstructions in the signal path.

  • Whats the range of apple airport express

whats the range of apple airport express.

The effective range is about 150 feet or approximately 50 meters when there are no obstructions in the signal path between the AirPort Express and the wireless device receiving the signal.
But, walls, ceilings and other obstructions absorb a great deal of the signal in a home, so it is not possible to predict how the AirPort Express might perform in your home until you try it out in your home.
In general, you would not want the signal to have to negotiate moving through more than a few walls. A ceiling, because it is much thicker than a wall, will absorb a good deal more of the signal.

  • What are the ranges for correct skin tones using RGB%?

What are the ranges for correct skin tones using RGB%?  Used to using a scale from 0 to 255.  But with LR it's RGB  , I know 100% RGB is white.  What do you use for %?

While I whole heartedly agree that we should not be constrained to hard and fast numbers for accurate skin tones ... LR does offer an RGB color readout ... I am assuming they made those percentages available for the user to monitor the breakdown of specific color values for a reason ... so we could have an indication of how a specific color in an image will be reproduced ...
I liken this to using a speedometer ... while many experienced drivers in well tuned vehicles can travel on the highway at the prescribed legal speed limit without really monitoring the readout on the dashboard ... however, there are times when they would like to verify the speed at which they are traveling ... the RGB color percentage readout in LR is no different ... just a source of information to verify you are achieving what you desire ...
Again, going by specific numbers in this instance, I believe, could lead to problems ... there may be times when you may desire or actually need to adjust skin tones ... even though a pleasing WB has been achieved ... the relationship of R, G and B can be used to get you there.
From what I have researched and put into practice with LR the following seems to be a good starting point and the data was borrowed from "the pixelation" blog:
    R: highest %
    G: middle %
    B: lowest %
To get a little more specific. In general,
    R: Y + (15-20)
    G: average of R and B
    B: R – (15-20)
For example, the following values represent common Caucasian skin tones using the rules above:
    * R: 80%; G: 70%; B: 60%. R is 20 points higher than B, and G is midway between R and B. That’s perfect.
    *  R: 86%, G: 78%; B: 70% also reflects a nicely balanced skin tone.  Again, G is midway between R and B, and R is 16 points higher than B. This, too, illustrates a great relationship among the colors.

It is not that simple.. are the walls hollow or solid concrete..?? it is not the thickness of the walls.. but the thickness of material and angle of penetration.. remember wierless is a dead straight line.. Tx to Rx.. so a 30deg angle through concrete is a lot more material than just 6" steel reinforcing is really bad.. at an angle it maybe hard for the wireless to see a gap.
Through standard plasterboard.. rockboard in US I think. walls, with no insulation.. about 15% signal drop on each.. the TC should work ok in standard size house over single floor at least at 2.4ghz .. but the speed will drop as you get further away. Difficult to say more.. that is why apple make the extreme and express and TC can all extend wireless from each other. But all this is only 2.4ghz.
5ghz you will be lucky to get signal through two walls.
    2. Can I backup my data to my Time Capsule anywhere in the world using the Internet?
You can access the TC by using BTMM via iCloud in certain circumstances.. we would not recommend backups over internet.. the possiblity of corrupting the whole backup is too high. Just use a 2.5" portable drive.. ML can backup TM to different targets..
    3. Can I use the Time Capsule to backup data on my iphone, ipad and ipod?
Not directly.. they do not work with TC.. they work with iTunes.. and you automatically backup to itunes locally or cloud.. then Time Machine backs up the iTunes.
You can access the file and store files on the TC if you use a file browser app. But this is not the intended method of operation of any of those devices.

  • Owned an iMac for 5 years - have no idea what my password is for my AirPort Express which I set up about 3 years ago  My wife has just purchased an iPad 2 and it is asking for my forgotten password - how do I retrieve it ?

How do I recover my password set up when I added AirPort Express to my iMmac a few years ago..  My wife has just purchased an iPad and it is asking for that "forgotten" password to make the Wi Fi connection ?

From the airport express user manual:
If You Forgot Your Network or AirPort Express Password
You can clear the AirPort network or AirPort Express password by resetting AirPort
    Express.
    To reset your password:
1 Use the end of a straightened paper clip to press and hold the reset button for one
    second.
    2 Select your AirPort network.
    On a Macintosh computer:
=> Use the AirPort status menu in the menu bar to select the network created by AirPort
Express (the network name does not change).
3 Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a
    Macintosh
4 Select your AirPort Express and click Configure.
5 In the dialog that appears, make the following changes:
Â Reset the AirPort Express password.
Â Turn on encryption to activate password protection for your AirPort network. If you
turn on encryption, enter a new password for your AirPort network.
    6 Click OK.
AirPort Express restarts to load the new settings

  • What Is The Range For TC?

What is the maximum useable range for a wireless connection between a MBP and TC? I would want to use mine up to 15 meters (50 ft) and through 2 light wood/plasterboard walls.

15 meters should be fine. My old Airport Express worked well in that range, and the AEBS has a much better range.

  • Is it possible to extend the range of one airport express with a second airport express?

    Hi,
We have a Time Warner router and have it hardwired to an Airport Express. Is it possible to extend the range of that one airport express with a second airport express?

... The new AirPort Express that I have is an 802.11n version, but the second one is an older model and I don't know which version it might be. Also, the system recently updated so I'm using the AirPort Utility 6.1.
If you are using Mountain Lion, AirPort Utility 6.1 is the version installed by default. It will not be able to administer "older" AirPort base stations.
For them, use AirPort Utility 5.6 which contains the features you need. It can administer your older Express as well as current production base stations.
AU 5.6 is compatible with Lion as well as Mountain Lion, however, the installer app will refuse to install it on Mountain Lion.
This dilemma is easily solved though. You simply need to extract the app from the installer package using a package extractor like Pacifist.
    Download Pacifist here: http://www.charlessoft.com/
Download AirPort Utility 5.6 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
If you happen to have an archived copy of the AU 5.6 app somewhere, such as a Time Machine backup or equivalent, you can simply restore it or drag the app to your Mountain Lion system's Utilities folder. It will run without complaint. It is only the package installer that is the problem.
Mountain Lion will not allow you to delete its existing version of AirPort Utility. Just ignore it. It and the older version (which will bear the unique name "AirPort Utility 5.6") can peacefully coexist.
Note: For those with Leopard or Snow Leopard systems you need AirPort Utility 5.6.1 (this is confusing - a later AirPort Utility version for an earlier OS X version - but it is correct).
Download AirPort Utility 5.6.1 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1536

When you do this reset make sure the Airport Express is in the same room near your computer ( the one you are setting the AE settings ).

What is the life expectancy of an airport express?

My guess.....3-4 years would be about average based on forum experience.
I have one that is 6 years old...been running almost 24/7, and have had one fail that was less than 6 weeks old, so averages won't tell you much since any electronic component can fail at any time.

  • What are the main differences between airport express and extreme?

what are the main differences between the express and extreme base stations.

In addition to Bob Timmons' link the main differences are as follows:
Extreme has a slightly more powerful antenna (might not be true but from experience it seems to be)
    Extreme has USB HDD sharing
    Express has AirPlay
Extreme has 3 Gigabit ports (don't be confused by Apple's page. Apple states 4 including WAN, 3 without WAN)
    Express is smaller
Express has 10/100 Ethernet whereas Extreme has Gigabit

  • What is the range for the newest AirPort / Time Capsule?

I am considering a house remodel which would put my computer in a room away from my router.  How far apart can they be and still work effectively?

If you are asking about wireless performance, it is always best to have line-of-sight between the wireless router and computer as much as possible.
Even a thin wall of wallboard and two by fours can absorb up to 30% of the signal, so after a few walls, you may have a seriously degraded signal with slower Internet and much greater chance of intermittent connections.
Range measurements (if you can find them) are typically made in a large open space....like an aircraft hangar with no obstructions in the signal path between the router and computer. It is nice to know that an AirPort might work OK up to about 50 meters or a little over 150 feet, but chances are, the layout of your home is a bit different.
To get a very rough idea of what your performance might be, move the computer to a location that will simulate the number of walls that the signal must pass through in your home and check things out.
If you decide to go ahead with the remodel, you would be very wise to budget for relocation of the wireless router during the process, or plan to run an Ethernet cable from the modem to the new router location.

  • I have FIOS. I linked my FIOS router via ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme.  I want to extend the range using an Airport Express wirelessly; however when I plug in the Express, the network does not find it.

    Any help is appreciated.

Make sure the ethernet cord is plugged into the WAN port on the Aiport (the port with a circle of dots above it) and do a hard reset (hold the reset button until the light blinks rapidly.)  It will not automatically appear in the Airport Utiltiy. You are looking for the airport under the wifi menu after a few minutes or in Settings>Wifi on an iOS device that you can click to join and continue to setup.
