What is the recovery mode and what does it do to my ipad3/iphone5

I have recently synced my photos to my regular computer- a month ago- and then the hard disk of the computer had burnt and my photos are gone because i didn't turn on the back up option before all of that happens
I am trying to get them back because they are so important to me and i thought that the recovery mode would help but i don't know even a little about it

Thanks for that 'sberman' - because my iPhone is backed-up to my work computer (only at this stage) I have had to call our IT Department in Adleaide. (4 times this morning). The last guy managed to get the phone into 'DFU Mode' - no more recovery mode screen - (kind of 'asleep' perhaps) from my understanding of same. I am awaiting a call again from IT so they can get my computer to actually recognise my iPhone on the C Drive. This also happened to one of my colleagues in Newman (WA). She got so frustrated with the whole process that she bought another phone the next time she was in 'civilisation.' She hasn't had any problems since. (Cross fingers).

i tried to restore my ipod and accidently unplugged it, now itunes is telling me that itunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode. and that i must restore my ipod before using it in itunes. but i can't figure out how to restore it with out it showing up in itunes.

Download the right ipsw corresponding with your ipod from the link.after installation is done.connect to itunes hold down the power and home button for 15 seconds. when you see the resoe ipod hold down option and finder will pop up. find the ipsw that you downloaded and then click on it and choose open.

What is recovery mode and why does it want me to restore my iphone?

I was downloading the new software 4.3.5 for my iphone 4 when i think the computer lost internet so it appeared with an error and i tried again but then it said "Itunes is detecting an iphone in recovery mode" then it wanted me to restore my iphone whitch im scared to do. also it spent quite alot of time on "preparing for update". now all i can get from my iphone is the picture of the cable wanting to be plugged into itunes.
please tell me what recovery mode is and how i got it. and also if there is any way ican get my iphone back with out restoring my iphone. thank you

Leave the phone connected to iTunes and let it boot the phone up again. iTunes should then try and update the firmware again once it detects the phone.

IPod is stuck in recovery mode and retoring does not fix - What can?

I've installed a new computer and transfered itunes just fine but when I connected my sons iPod it stated "itunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." I've now restored it more times than I care to remember (it appears restored back to factory settings) but the same message ".... detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore..." persists and thus will not download music library. What else can be done?

This repetitive "ipod found in recovery mode" message is most likely caused by drive letter confusion on your computer.
In that case, you'll need to try assigning your iPod a different drive letter.
Log off of any other users on your computer.
Then, put your iPod into Disk Mode and see these steps:
1 - Don't plug in your iPod yet.
2 - Go to "START -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools (if you don't see this, click on "classic view" button on the left panel) -> Computer Management."
3 - Click on the "Disk Management" button in the left panel area.
4 - Now, with "Computer Management" and Control Panel windows opened, connect your iPod to the computer.
5 - Right-click on your iPod's listing there (after a few moments when it gets recognized in this drive window), and click on "Change Drive letter and Paths". Then the "Change..." button.
Here's what it should look like:
Assign your iPod the letter "M" "N", "O" or the like (further along in the alphabet).

Hi. Last night I left it updating 5.1.1 from 5.1 when I was going to bed. And at night I heard usb noise and woke up. iTunes had an error, I did not remember what is written there because I was sleepy. I think it was like 1612 error but I'm not sure. There were an itunes logo and an usb wire on the phones screen. And I cant get rid of it. iTunes does not recognize the phone in "DFU mode" too. I need the phone today and I dont know what to do.
