what is the safest way to recover erased files

It's not a matter of safe, it's a matter of cost.
Data recovery is expensive.

  • What is the safest way to deflate a bloated project file in Premiere?

What is the safest way to deflate a bloated file? I am having difficulty opening my Premiere project file because it is over 2 gigs. I have recently updated my entire CS6 collection, so from what I understand the bloated issue is fixed, but I still can't open my project. What is the best way to deal with this issue? Should I open the file in a text editor and erase duplicate code? Or should I open a new project and import the project file? What causes files to bloat?
My OS is Snow Leopard and I am working on a mac pro (xeon 2006) 12 gigs of ram.

I've found Acrobat Pro's document compare feature very useful for some jobs, and irritating for others.  One of its modes amounts to light-tabling the two documents, but I usually want a text compare, most recently of a 450-pp. book, where the 250-pp. max. meant I had to do it in two chunks.  Acrobat 9 seems happier with more RAM: I learned not to approach the 250-pp. max on my Vista64 machine with 8 GB, but the package seems more reliable on my Win7 machine with 16 GB.  It often generates quite a few false positives, which take getting used to.  Versions 7 and 8, if I recall correctly, would place the pages side-by-side, which I prefer; version 9 can still be made to do this, I'm note sure about X.

I installed the upgrade to OS 10.6 some months ago and have had problems ever since with slow speed on a lot of software, Adobe InDesign CS4 in particular. I would like to reinstall the OS clean and start over. What is the safest way to do this? Or does this not sound like it would be the culprit?

  • What is the safest way to browse the internet using iPhone 4s?

    iPhone 4s
OK I love to use my iPhone to search the internet. I would say at least 50% of my time on the iPhone is doing just that.
When I search the internet using my iPhone, I like to use Google as my search engine.
I downloaded the Google app to use. I guess I always thought the Google app ran through the safari browser. My understanding is that safari is a safe browser particularly on the iPhone. But now I learn that by using the Google app, I am NOT going through the safari browser. My understanding is that the Google app goes directly to the Google servers. Ok
So when I look at my safari settings on the phone, I see that Google is the default browser.
So I guess story short, what is the safest way to browse the internet on my iPhone?
    Using the Google app?
Using safari browser with Google as the search engine?

I'm not trying to be unkind but I think you're way overthinking the whole notion of safety on your iPhone. Unless you jailbreak it, you're not going to get viruses or malware, regardless of what browser you use. I generally use Chrome. If you use the Google search app (which I like very much, by the way), you're using its internal browser which, I suspect, is based on Chrome.
I remain unclear about what you're afraid is going to happen when you use the internet from you iPhone. Can the NSA track you? Sure. So does your mobile carrier. But they can both do that without you accesing the web. Can you stumble on a nefarious website that tries to trick you into giving up sensitive information? Sure. Again, you just have to use good judgement about who you give information to, just a you would in person. Browser doesn't matter. Can you still find really icky "adult' sites? Yup. But most of them require Flash to view the videos.
Relax, enjoy your phone. I suspect you're in more danger from Candy Crush (the average player spends almost $3 a DAY playing!!!) than anything you find through your browser.
    Best of luck.

  • What is the safest way to get 2012 US Holidays on iCal?

What is the safest way to get 2012 US Holidays on iCal?

Besides being out of date, I found errors in the US holiday calendar published by Apple here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/calendars/
Instead, I've subscribed to the US calendar at this site:
    http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/holidays.html
Copy the URL weblink (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/caldata/USHolidays.ics) for the US holidays, and use it to "subscribe" to this calendar.  Once you've subscribed, each holiday will populate your local calendar.
This US Holiday calendar is pretty good.  It includes many Christian religious holidays, as well as patriotic holidays.  There are also separate entries for Federal holidays (designated as OPM).  I find this useful since I deal with the Feds on a regular basis.
Edit:  Just found more subsciption Holiday calendars here:   http://www.calendarlabs.com/ical-calendar-holidays.php

    Thanks.

Hello, thank you for all these informations.
Right now my graphic card current Bios Version is 80.04.00.2F (P2004.0010). Is it the good one ?
I've found out yesterday evening about the GPT Drive, when I saw it on my laptop which works fine with UEFI fastboot mode.
For the moment the main drive on my desktop is MBR formated SSD.
Is it safe to clone the MBR SSD Drive to another GPT formated SSD Drive ?
In my Partition soft I saw that it can convert MBR Drives to GPT without data loss. Could this work ?
    Thanks for reading me.

  • I just purchased a new MacPro to replace my existing 2006 MacPro which cannot be undated with the new operating system.  My question is what is the safest way to transfer all my files.  1) simply install my existing 2TB HD into the new Mac Pro or 2)

I just purchased a new MacPro 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor to replace my existing 2006 MacPro 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon because it cannot be undated with the new Lion operating system.
My question is what is the safest way to transfer all my files to the new computer.  1) simply install my existing 2TB HD into the new Mac Pro, set it as the startup drive, and update its10.7  operating system or 2) or use the migration program.
I'm concerned that simply installing the existing 2TB HD, I may have issues with it not recognising some infromation written for the old 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon.

your new system runs 10.6.8 just fine as has been said and stated many times.
    I would clone it first.
I would even clone the original system it has.
And if you have or want to use Lion and then Mountain Lion, fine - I would still keep backups of every OS.
I am not a fan of putting the OS and Apps plus all the data all on one drive. I like to keep them separate.
Whatever OS, rerun the last combo update is all and any other updates.
And by "new Lion" I assume you don't mean 10.7 but "Moutain" 10.8.  Part of me says keep Lion and SL around, and test and try out ML with your apps and other hardware you may have. After too many years, waiting for 10.8.1 - and give everyone time to update their apps and retest.

  • What's the safest way...force eject an external hard drive?

I have 10.6.8 on  MacBook Pro.  When I try to eject my 1TB external hard drive, I get the error message “one or more programs may be using it.”  When I tried to eject it from Utilities, it said that “it could not be unmounted.”  What’s the safest way to unmount it?  Can I just shut down my laptop and then turn off the external hard drive after the computer is shut down?

Shutting down should always work, because all programs are terminated and they stop using the disk. But you often don't have to go that far.
Logging out should also always work, for the same reasons, although the only programs that get terminated are the ones in the user account that is logged out.
If you don't want to log out, quit any apps you are no longer using.
Mac Mail is notorious for hanging onto files that have been attached to emails. If you attached a file from an external disk, Mail might not have let it go. Quitting Mail solves this problem.
The Finder sometimes doesn't let go of files either, like after you do a QuickLook on a file. Normally you can't quit the Finder except using Activity Monitor, so I add the Quit command using a utility like TinkerTool because quitting the Finder definitely helps with some problems.
Another solution is to upgrade to Lion, because I hear that the message is more specific about telling you exactly which program it is that's still using the disk.

  • What is the best way to safeguard my files and pictures before I send off my MacBook Pro to get fixed?

What is the best way to safeguard my files and pictures before I send off my MacBook Pro to get fixed? I am running Mavericks and use an AirPort Time Machine to back-up all my files.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. You need at least two independent backups to be completely safe. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore to an empty drive.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • What is the best way to merge a file content into log file

What is the best way to merge a file content into log file.
In worst case, I will read the file line by line as string, then use
    logger.info(lineString)to output to log file.
However, is there better way to do this?
The eventual log file will be something like:
    log message 1
    log message 2
    content from file line 1
    content from file line 2
    content from file line 3
    log message 3
    log message 4Thanks

    1. What do you mean by better?
I would like to see better performance. read line by line and log each line as string can be slow. Did you measure this and determine that it is actually a problem for your application? Or are you guessing?
Regardless of what you do you are still going to need to read the file.
    >
2.The only better way I can think of is not having to do it, but I assume you have a very good reason to want to do this.
Yes, I have to do it beacuse the requirement is to have that file content be part of logging.
Any idea? How is it supposed to be part of it? For example which of the following is better?
            File AAA - contents
                       First Line
                       Second Line XXX
            Log 1
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: Random preceding line
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: First Line
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: Second Line XXX
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: Random following line
            Log 2
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: Random preceding line
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: ----- File: AAA -------------
                    First Line
                    Second Line XXX
2009-03-27 DEBUG: Random following lineBoth of the above have some advantages and disadvantages.
The first in a mult-threaded app can end up with intermittent log entries in between lines, so having log lines with thread ids becomes important.
The first can be created by reading one line at a time and posting one at a time.
The second can be created by reading the entire file as a single string and then posting using a single log statement.

You can specify the path to the file as a system property
              eg
              java -Dconfig.file.location=./mydirecotry/myfile.txt com.test.MyApp

  • What is the best way to name a file?

What is the best way to name a file? Use "_" so that the characters make one, long name? Why do that?

Another take on naming files, particularly image files, is like this:
I use a file remaning application like Name Mangler to back, sequentially rename the photos.  I put them in a folder with a similar name.  Using the format I do, YYYY-MM-DD- Description-001.jpg, they are easy to sort by date by sorting alphanumerically.

  • What is the best way to run .exe files on my mac?

What is the best way to run .exe files on my mac? I need to run some updates for my john deere gps and the downloads i get can only be run on windows.

There are several options for running Windows software (*.exe files) on a Mac, depending what your program is, how often you use it, and your personal preferences.
One way that does not require Windows is an open source effort called WINE.  Check out winehq.org.  You may find that that's all you need for your programs.  There is also a commercial effort that has grown from WINE, and you will find info about it on the site mentioned.  These DO NOT require that you have and install Windows.
If you want to run sessions devoted only to Windows software, and want programs to run as fast as they do on a PC, the Apple's Bootcamp program is useful.  With it you dedicate a partition on your hard disk to windows, and on startup choose to either boot into OS X or Windows.  Each runs without any connection to the other.  This requires you have a copy of the Windows software as well as the applications you want to run.
If you want to be able to easily exchange data between your Windows and Mac programs, and skip back and forth between the two, there are several emulators available that run on Mac OS X and create a Windows environment where many Windows programs can operate along side Mac programs.  Parallels and VMwear are two comercial packages available for purchase and Virtual Box is an open source effort available for free.  Google will find all three for you.
My only experience is with Virtual Box.  It is slow and a bit clunky, but it is free and meets my needs for the very few "just got to have" windows programs I sometimes use.
Google is your friend on this and can provide a lot more, and better, information than I can.
    Best of luck,
    Ray
